I recently came across my old notepad and I feel it is time to write these thoughts and observations down in a more formal, understandable manner.
-- One of the first things I noticed about Corey was that he was still a very cautious animal, but it became very clear that he was capable of remembering things, like the rhythm of my footsteps as I approached his pin, or the sound of my voice, because he always seemed to be at the surface waiting for me when I showed up to visit. Yet he would always rush off to hide if anyone new approached his pin.
-- Then came the day I approached and Corey was no longer a manta ray as we know them, but some sort of interesting humanoid hybrid, waiting at the surface for me as he heard my approach. I guess he could see the look of awe and surprise on my face because he then asked me what was wrong. I about dropped the bag of fish I had for him. Not only had he changed physically he'd changed quite a bit mentally as well. He still would eat like a ray, and react to new people as he did before, but he was clearly much more intelligent than I had previously realized. I'm debating whether or not live food is right for him anymore, but then again Phinn still eats like a monster, and his change is further progressed than Corey's...
-- Spending time with Corey it became clear that the 'human' side of him craves attention and companionship, but the good Doctor says it may not be the best idea to allow him around some of the other fish if he still eats small live fish. He's started peering off at the community pool more and more lately, watching as the others play and laugh while he's stuck in his pin next to Phinn. I fear that if I don't find a way for him to get some companionship, some friendship he may grow depressed. He's even started telling me how bored and lonely he is. He even actually spoke to another of the lab assistants today, which surprised even me.
-- As I learn more or come up with ways to improve his situation I will continue to update this log, but for now I have little to report beyond this. I have been looking into possible companions for him, ways to fix his lonliness, but little progress has been made. I considered a pet, but my research seems to point to the fact that even as a hybrid he may be too territorial to allow anything else to live in his pin for long...
