Tons of people complain about how stupid and poorly written little shop is... Everyone is very critical of it because everyone dies. One by one evey character is killed off musically. It's about as successful as Wicked would be if Elphaba died like she's supposed to. That's why they had to write an alternate ending for the movie... the crybabies in showbiz have little pissy fits over main characters dying...
I don't know who these tons of people you're talking about are. I've never seen them. Maybe they're talking about the original b/w movie and not the musical?
As for changing the ending of the movie, it wasn't any 'crybabies in showbiz' that made a new ending necessary, it was the audiences themselves. In testscreenings, the test audiences got attached to the characters and apparently got hostile when Seymour and Audrey didn't survive. I forget exactly who pointed it out, but as they said, in a show, the actors come out for a curtain call, so even if they die, you at least get to see them again, but that isn't the case in a movie.
As for Wicked, I always felt that the ending would have been more powerful if she had actually died, and we didn't get a cop-out ending.
