Strike the Bell - a pumping shanty

Aft on the poopdeck
Walking about
There is the second mate
So sturdy and so stout
What he is thinking of
He only knows himself
Oh, we wish that he would hurry up
And strike, strike the bell

Strike the bell, second mate
Let us go below
Look away to windward
You can see it's going to blow
Look at the glass
You can see that it is fell
We wish the you would hurry up
And strike, strike the bell

Down on the maindeck
Working at the pumps
There is the larboard watch
Ready for their bunks
Over to windward
They see a great swell
They're wishing that the second mate
Would strike, strike the bell

Aft at the wheel
Poor Anderson stands
Grasping the spokes
In his cold, mittened hands
Looking at the compass
The coarse is clear as hell
He's wishing that the second mate
Would strike, strike the bell

For'ad in the fo'c'sle head
Keeping sharp lookout
There is Johnny standing
Ready for to shout
"Lights' burning bright, sir
And everything is well"
He's wishing that the second mate
Would strike, strike the bell

Aft the quarterdeck
The gallant captain stands
Looking to windward
With his glasses in his hand
What he is thinking of
We know very well
He's thinking more of shortening sail
Than strike, strike the bell

That's a good one- I love The Corsairs' version. But then again, I love practically anything The Corsairs do.

It's been a while, so here's another little ditty.

A Wet Sheet and a Flowing Sea

A wet sheet and a flowing sea,
A wind that follows fast,
And fills the white and rustling sail,
And bends the gallant mast,
And bends the gallant mast, my boys!
While like an eagle free,
Away the good ship flies,
And leaves Columbia on our lee.

Chorus
Oh! Give me a wet sheet,
A flowing sea,
And a wind that follows fast,
And fills the white and rustling sail
And bends the gallant mast

Oh, for a soft and gentle wind,
I heard a fair one cry,
But give to me the roaring breeze,
And the white waves heaving high;
And white waves heaving high, my boys!
The good ship tight and free;
The world of waters is our home,
And merry men are we.

Chorus

There's a tempest in yon horned moon,
And lightning in yon cloud,
And hard the music, mariners,
The wind is piping loud;
The wind is piping loud, my boys!
The lightning flashes free,
While the hollow oak our palace is,
Our heritage the sea.

Chorus

Haven't heard that one before. Who has done it?

Nor' have I.

As for my recommendations, Woods Tea Company recently released a new album & another CD I highly recommend looking into would be 'Into the Arms of the Sea' by the Black Irish Band. Check it out online by Googling it.

sweatdrop I'm not actually sure who has done it.

This is my shanty reference page: Songs of the Sea

Most of them (if not all) have midi files so that you can hear the tune, and a bit of history on where and when it was found or written.

Nifty. I've in the past few months developed a nigh-fanatical interest in Great Big Sea. They don't do shanties in the traditional sense, but their renditions of Newfoundland folk music are quite good, and there's smugglers, pirates, and sailors a'plenty. Check them out on iTunes- all of their stuff (I think) is on there.

I've about 25 of their songs that I downloaded via Limewire, and I'm in the process of finding more. They've got a nice sound to them, and I love their accents. sweatdrop

Now I know this is a bit off from Shanties and Sea Songs, but I seem to be listening to alot of Apocalyptica these days. I was fortunate enough to find their Discography on BitComit, and have been pulling songs to my playlist from that for about a month now. To those of you who don't know, Apocalyptica is a Finnish band consisting of three, formerly four, classically trained cellists and, since 2003, a drummer. Their speciality is metal music played on cellos, though they play an equal amount of classical music. I prefer the classical to the metal, though I will admit there are several of the metal songs (especially the Metallica songs) that would make great sword play music. 3nodding
