A friend loaned me the game and said, "You have GOT to try this." I'm not sure why, actually... I just remember being really into Resident Evil at the time, but he loaned me Suikoden anyway.
I didn't mind the graphics, even though Suikoden has consistently been a generation behind its peers. I actually preferred the 2-D graphics reminiscent of Super Nintendo games compared to the PS1's terrible 3-D graphics.
The music was amazing.
The characters were unique in spite of the sheer number of them.
Having a castle that grew with the number of occupants was genius.
The unpredictable storyline was probably the best feature. Family turning against each other, people dying... I never knew what to expect next.
I didn't even know the game would turn into a series; I just happened to have a little Christmas spending cash and my family stopped at Kmart or something so I headed for the electronics aisle. I was stunned to see Suikoden II there, since I didn't know they made it, and it was only $10. They also had Castlevania: Symphony of the Night; I'd never heard of Castlevania, but I saw it was about vampires and for $10 I couldn't turn that game down, either. Two of my all-time best gaming purchases!

Maybe a decade ago I had a friend who didn"t really care for her copy of Suikoden 2 that much. I think the enemies in the beginning were too easy for her. So she gave it to me (I know, it's a $120 game.) So fast forward to now, and I've just started the first game on a digital copy.
