Rei being feeling love for Gendo and Shinji can probably just be put to the fact that she is composed of Yui Ikari. It is possible (and probable) that she holds some of Yui's own emotions and it would make sense that she would feel love towards Gendo and Shinji... you notice that she shows it in different ways towards each of them though. Towards Shinji she acts more like she's trying to protect him and towards Gendo... well... yeah

As to her wanting to be accepted... it's true that she doesn't seem to care about fitting in... but it's possible that she NEEDS it on some unconcious (sp?) level. It all sort of comes back to her knowledge (or rather, lack there-of) of what/who she is... sudden bursts of expression and/or emotion are to be expected.

I just had a thought, though it's just a little theory! There are a few times when Rei is told that she will either not be in an attack (on the angels) or will have a minor role. In these instances she seems slightly bothered and questions the person giving the orders. This may show that she feels the need to be useful to people, probably because it is the only thing she feels she can do. In this way, she's a lot like Shinji.

This refers back to her dislike of being called a "doll" by Asuka; she may have taken that as meaning that she was useless (on some level at least) which would mean to her that she had no purpose.

Anyway, now that I've had my rant I believe that's all I have to say! biggrin Give me your opinions!

My feelings on Rei? I have to say that I prefer her over Asuka, for many reasons. Rei's lack of emotions may be bad in some respects, but when piloting Eva, her emotions don't get in her way and don't make her reckless, unlike Asuka and Shinji. And unlike Asuka, Rei doesn't deliberately try to attract attention to herself, and it makes her much less annoying, in my opinion. sweatdrop When Rei shows her rare glimpses of emotion, it just makes it all the more special.
For lack of trying to get all philosophical (which isn't hard when discussing Evangelion) I won't even go into the whole Rei/Lilith thing.

What fascinates me most about Rei is that despite the attempts to replace her as a human being, each "version" of her is actually quite different.

Each one has the name "Rei", but each one has a soul that wasn't able to be duplicated as observed by their differences. The first one was quite honest and spoke her mind (thus getting her killed). The second one was the one who was learning, while the third one rebelled.

But all of them were meant to be "Yui", yet none ended up being so.

Another thing about Rei is the intensity of her eyes. Somebody said that Rei has the most expression out of the three? I would agree. One of the most intense character designs I've ever come across in all of anime is that of Rei Ayanami, the girl "white with bandages". She doesn't need to move, yell, make faces or show you sequential pictures to show that she is in fact able to feel...her eyes tell you her concern, serenity, or curiosity just by looking at a single picture of her.

She can feel, but like most children her age, she doesn't really know how to express them appropriately.

She doesn't know who she is as of yet. Asuka and Shinji make speculations, but Rei takes it into a more "Cartesian" level. She doesn't just assume, she asks questions constantly to try to arrive at an answer.

Identity is one of the biggest themes in Evangelion. Ayanami probes at a more universal level of identity than the other two. As a person who has no past, a person who has no parents, an uncertain future in fighting...is that body that moves through these issues really a person?

What are their importance or non-importance in making a person after all?
