Konnichi wa! o genki desu ka?

I just graduated from college and will be leaving to go to Japan with the Nova branch. I'll be leaving for Japan in Feb 2007. I've been poking around boards and such looking for information and testimonials from those who have already visited Japan. I'll be staying in Japan for 1 year. I'm looking into Kyoto or Tokyo. I'm trying to teach myself the language. I've been learning for about half a year now. I've done fairly well for completely teaching myself. Anyway I'm looking for websites that I could get plugged into a Japanese community. I'm looking for something similiar to this guild. Does anyone have any recommended sites or any other recommendations for me?

That's great! You would have a good time in japan wherever you go, having been there myself once, and going back in 22 days. (from 5/28/06). if you are trying to get a homestay, the families are very accomodating, provided you get a service that deals with them properly. if you knew japanese fairly well, you could (in theory) go through JET, but, you are learning japanese right now... but still, good luck on the trip.

Genki desu yo. ^_^

Hey congrats man, yeah acutally there are some guilds with great lessons and people with years of experience and have been in japan quite a few times to help you with any problems.

As for a good website, sabotenweb is god of gods when it comes to japanese help for me, it's got stuff about software, culture, daily news(caution, some those sites are in japanese), language learning, penpals, and more..It;s basicly and archive of japanese based sites.

Click to see Sabotenweb.com/bookmarks/-This is the main area where you'll probably find most of your needed sites and info. I suggest you brows around and explore what you can, it's a big help. My only problem is trying to find the same sites I liked since it doesn't have any type of search engine in it. I even found a site that teaches kanji on there, how to do the strokes, it's meaning, and all that, though I don't remember which it is. @_@
Beware! Some of the sites on there may be closed(offline, out, not in use, you get it) now and/or very difficult to follow or use, so it takes some patiance looking for what you like and what not.

Click to see www.japanese-online.com. This is another big help, which you could probably find on Sabotenweb if you searched for it. It's japanese-online.com the account is free and there are forums and a mailing system for penpals and help, as well as basic language lessons and grammar lessons too (the grammar is where you learn each of the individual particles and it's correct use(s) O.<). On this one, I guess the only problem is trying to find a penpal who's japanese, everyone is looking for one so they're like pop stars in there. >>;; that and installing the... oh what is it.. the thing that allows you to view japanese writing and not, ' ???? ???? ???? ????' a million times in a row. X_x

I hope this helps and good luck in your stay at japan.

The biggest piece of advice I can give to you is watch out for your employer. Nova has a notorious reputation for its slave labor practices (I know, I had a part time job with their recuiting department) and a high turn over. The big scam these days is crooked managers having their employees pay them money for "workers insurance" then pocket the money themselves. Other eikaiwa schools are just as bad, I would say. Unfortunately, an eikaiwa visa doesn`t permit you to sue in prefectural courts and most managers will tell you to go home if you don`t like their crooked dealings because they have abosolute power over your visa.

After you get used to life in Japan, I suggest you start looking for an activity that will help you practie Japanese because English teaching is, obviously, a job that doesn`t rely on Japanese. Try your local community center or gaijin newspaper, as they always have assorted help wanted adds

Yeah, I've met a lot of Nova teachers, and I concur with this statement. You need to be careful.

If you go to Tokyo, I think you may not end up getting the full "Japan" experience. Kyoto would be much better, if you want to indulge in the culture as well.

Also, if you go to Kyoto, let me know. I live in Tokushima, which is on the island of Shikoku. I'm only about 3 hours by bus from Kyoto. I may not be a whole online community or anything, but I can offer to pass along as much knowledge as I can.

Congrats, no matter where you go, going to Japan is a wonderful experience. heart

I personally recomend any where in Kansai that is relatively suburban. I did part of my internship in Shiga Pref. country side area and it was boaring as all hell. Kyoto Pref. is very moutainy and country side like as well. My university is in Hyogo but I live less than 30min away from Osaka and Kobe so its very convient and a good mix of suburban/city life. Its served me well for the past several years. If you have any say in where you go, I would recommend some place like that.

Plus, the Kansai ladies are far more sexy than the Tokyo/Tokai gals whee
