What are your favorite jazz standards?

Here's mine
I love the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Jerome Kern. They were the greatest composers ever...

These are my Favorites to play in combos:

Lady Be Good- Gershwins

They Can't Take That Away From Me (Movie-"Shall We Dance" and "the Berkleys of Broadway)- Gershwins (I love this at a medium fast swing instead of a ballad.)

Be Careful It's My Heart (Movie "Holiday Inn")- Irving Berlin

Change Partners (Movie "Carefree")- Irving Berlin

The Way You Look Tonight (Movie "Swing Time") -Irving Berlin

I'm Old Fashioned (Movie "You were never Lovlier")- I think this was a Cole Porter Tune.

By standard, do you mean a song that's commonly played, or do you mean a song in AABA form.

Some guy somewhere here, I think, was making a big deal about how real standards are only in AABA, 32 Bar.

I've been listening to Willow Weep for Me and Round Midnight at least once a day, everyday, for the past month or so.

By a Satndard I'm talking about a song that has established itself as a standard in jazz literature, nothing to do with form. More to do with how good the song is, who performed it, what medium (Radio, movie, television show, etc.), and who wrote it.

You could say anything Irving Berlin wrote (non-jazz pieces excluded) is a jazz standard. The same for Duke Ellington or Glenn Miller. If Sinatra or Crosby sang it, it is probably a standard. If it was in a major musical it is probably a jazz standard.

Most of my selections come from Fred Astaire Movies. That is because, not only was Astaire a fine Musician/performer/dancer, but producers brought in the best song writers (The Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern/Dorthy Fields) to write for his movies.

So anything of Jazz Literary, Historical, or Popular appeal is a standard.

Recordings or sheets?
The Real Book has Round Midnight, and volume II has Willow Weep for Me.

I'm watching a very very sentimental episode of Sanford and Son right now.
Fred is remembering his deceased wife and their favorite song.
All of a sudden, I hear some familiar sounding chords from a harp, and then vibes playing Easy to Love.

That's such a nice song.

that is a beautiful song. There are soooooo many great ones that the general public today doesn't know about.

I shall spead jazz to the masses...

Well, I'll try...

: ) I'd follow you.

Just as long as there isn't any smooth jazz involved...
