What exactly IS Carbunkle? I've seen him as a little lizard, and a green cabit. What is he?

...and to hopefully provide an answer to those curious of the origins of 'Carbunkle" Carbunkl: A carbuncle is a dark red gem resembling a garnet. In an Arthurian legend, a knight was on a quest to retrieve three things, and one was a carbuncle belonging to a princess. A carbuncle is different from a ruby, so FF5 and FF6's "Ruby Light" (name of Carbuncle's attack) is technically incorrect. Arcanus Dominus writes: "In the lore of Spanish and Portugese explorers, a carbunkle was a small furry creature with a gemstone in its forehead that lived in South America." Last Cetra elaborates: "It was not furry, but a lizard. And the lizard was originally a Muslim princess/sorceress who was banned from Africa and came to South America. She talked to Satan himself when she got here (can't remember why) and was cursed to become a lizard with a carbuncle gem on its head. The light emanated from the gem was so strong that it could blind and stunt humans. But even so, many chased the creature during the 1800s around my state, because it was believed here (close from where I live), was its nest, and whoever found it would have access to the marvelous Jarau hill, a hidden cavern where one would find the most valuable of treasures." Mark quotes a poem called Parzival, by Wolfram von Eschenback, which describes a unicorn with a carbuncle on its head, beneath its horn. This probably fits better with the healing/protection properties of the summon Carbuncle, but the summon doesn't actually resemble a unicorn, so one of the other theories is probably a better bet.taken from Final Fantasy Compendium where most, if not all, origins and real life relations have been researched, discussed and debated. Enjoy!

A carbuncle is also a gowth of skin, not unlike a wart or mole. Not nearly as cute as the Satan worshipping princess of South Africa... o.o;; Though thanks be to you Akai for your insite and thourough research.

Need a cure for the growth comment? Just play FF XI and witness Carbunkle's tooth aching cuteness. Also using attacks with ruby in the name. Still pretty worthless but that's all you get after you quest forever for Carbunkles ruby.
