Gah scream for a music camp this summer, I have to have all major and minor scales memorized, plus one dorian. Also, a peice they have given us to play, which is two etudes that go into the upper register(not a problem, but still) on top of that, a sight reading excerpt they will present at the audition.

Well just remember the difference between major and minors tend to be the third and sixth notes and that a Dorian mode works with major.

I love scales, there so easy for the most part.. and you can do so much with them...Sight reading on the other hand makes me a bit nervus...i can read music fine, i just can sight read, i have to look at it for a second to see what it is.

Amrik, the bassist from a band I blindly follow. Told me, I should really practice my scales, but to add a intermission every third bla something. I had lost him at that point. He needs to tab s**t for me. Im lazy gonk I should stop being lazy...

As far as standard notation & tabs goes, if your main intent (like most) is just to play rock, then reading tabs is enough unless your also wanting to play classical music and/or jazz. Though I would still recommend learning to read music whenever you can. Many older musicians i've talked to whom have never learned usually wish they could have. Really is something to think about. 3nodding
Though as far as scales go, knowing scales in general is a real booster when it comes to all around improv and writing your own music, as there is nothing worst to my ears than to hear someone who keeps jumping in and out of key when playing random licks and melodies.
Anyways Dapples, if memorizing is your only trouble all I can recommend to you is the same thing I recommended to Black Jack in the other thread... and that is repetition. cool
