Well, in DOA2 he regains his memory. In all likelyhood, he returns to his village and everyone starts callin' him Hayate again.

Most characters win in a way just by participating I think that's how Ein got his memory while fighting meeting certain people and how Zack won some money. However it's obvious who the winners are in each game because the booklets to the sequel game give you hints and the movies.
DOA1=Kasumi-the introduction was about her and the mini movie for the credits show her mostly and I read somewhere that Kasumi killed Raidou so that's another reason why Ayane hates her.
DOA2=Hayabusa-tells about him in DOA3 booklet beating tengu or something and he's the only character having a mini movie talking to the Tengu before the battle if you watch the whole thing since it's connected to the movie that every character sees before fighting tengu. 3nodding
DOA3=Ayane- it's her father, right thing to do her ending is the only one that relates to OMEGA's defeat.And so far only ninjas won and she has more experience in the tournaments than Hayate.
DOA4=Helena- although not out yet Itagki said she is the new main character I believe in an interview.
And aren't we suppose to be talking about GEN-FU!?
