Allrigh so i was in the book store the other day, and they had for sale the first in a series of comic books about buddha. It was the famed anime artist Osamu Tezuka, the guy who created Astro boy, and many think actualy invented anime, and basicaly its a 8 part massive epic comic that follows the life of buddha. Well actualy most time is actualy focused on the people around him and what impact he has on their lives. It got the regular style of Osamu, with vulgar humor, fantastic art work, and a fair amount of nudity, but contains a religiouse core close to the heart of buddist teachings. With each of the 8 books being like 400 pages, its a very heavy reading material for comic book standards, and I wanted to know if anyone has heard about it, or read it, and what they thought of it?

I can't say I've read beyond a few pages of it - I never have time to, and can't afford to invest in the set - but I've heard it's alright. It's not exactly scripture at times, but some of the teachings are apparantly there. 3nodding
Of the stuff I have read on the Buddha's life, I can offer a few. If you are interested in the historical Buddha, I recommend the book by the same name (Buddha) by Karen Armstrong. If you'd like to see historical plus scriptural, Old Path White Clouds by Thich Nhat Hanh rocks my socks. heart

ღஐღ I've seen issue five of that in one of my city's bookstores for the last two years, but I've never seen the first issue here. I would love to read the series ... if I could find the first issue. Oh well. wink

I've read the first three volumes of this series and have the first. So far I love it. The art may be simple and a few of the scenes a little vulger but it does a fantastic job getting Buddha's wisdom out to the readers. The comic is sometimes humorous, sometimes emotional and filled with Buddha's wisdom and respect for all living beings. Each volume leaves me wanting more and I can't wait to read the rest. smile

I actually saw it in several bookstores in the city where I live, but I only read the last issue of it and it seemed rather off-base to the story and even violent. It wasn't the way I religiously think about Shakyamuni Buddha's life...and I don't recall that particular ending to his son and his wife in history. I think some of it may be fiction.

I've heard about it, and learned a great deal about what it all entails. I haven't read any yet, but I would LOVE to.
