Kaveri Porter

Kaveri dug a hand in her pocket, sifting around before getting a palmful of those few little bits that she found earlier that night. The bloody, fleshlike bits -- no larger than a dime, seemingly composed mostly of skin, and covered in bits of green lint from the woman's hoodie -- shone grimly in the bright light surrounding the gate area. "These," she said, holding her hand out. "Amongst other things, too. I figured the Doc would wanna analyze this stuff or something."

The two guards exchanged glances. "Those are... skin?" They looked rather disturbed, but one of them went and got two plastic bags they had been given for evidence collecting. "Here," they grunted, holding open the bags, one for the hat and one for the...bits.

One the guards, Markerson, looking closer to Kaveri. "Hey you were there, weren't you?"

"I don't have a clue, I found 'em digging in the dirt," she said, opening up her hand and dropping the pieces into the first bag. Once they're deposited, she promptly wipes her hand on her jeans. She next reached into her pocket to pull out the muddy hat, floppy and soaked with rainwater and God knows what else, dropping it into the second bag with a wet, heavy-sounding noise. "You wouldn't happen to have anything I could wash my hands with, would you?"

"Oh, and one more thing -- this part of a shirt, my friend here wants to see what's up with it." She hands over the torn up, blood-stained remains of the shirt Zach gave her moments earlier. "Maybe that'll help clear stuff out, yeah?"

She angled her head at Markerson, making her neck look crooked, as she looked him up and down with her dead-looking, silver eyes. "I'm not gonna lie to ya, man," she said to the guard, "but I think it was just a really bad case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. But yeah, I was there."

Markeron took the shirt peice and the hat and sealed the bags. He then grabbed a rag and handed it to her to wipe her hands on.

"She probably picked them from her teeth," the other guard said to Markeron, in clear earshot. "Did you say she had human teethmarks?"

Zach glanced at Kaveri nervously, feeling somewhat exposed in nothing but pants. The plainly colored towel he'd used for a makeshift shirt was lost to a greedy branch way back in the jungle. He realized he hadn't been in that same spot for two months, back when the island was not yet his prison.

He soon became preoccupied with noticing the large and unfriendly weapons the guards carried. To Zach, the big guns look designed for causing an unpleasantly slow and painful death. His tail grew more rigid where it lay behind him, a signal that stress was high. Their obvious jab at Kaveri was closely punctuated by a bizarre hissing that escaped Zach's mouth before he clamped over it with his right hand.

"Thanks." Kaveri swipes the rag out of Markerson's hand, furiously rubbing her crooked, clawed hands with it before handing it back upon hearing the other's comment. She narrowed her eyes at the other guard, lifting up her head as high as it could go on that long neck. She puffed out her chest and put both hands on her hips, attempting to size the other man up.

"You know," she said with a crooked smirk, "if I had picked them from my teeth, I would not have gone through the risk of contaminating myself and my hoodie and spat them out in front of you both."

"Not if you were trying to hide something. You know, that wouldn't be very subtle. You're trying to make it look like you actuall give a ******** about the doctor."

Markerson shot him a look. "Please, don't start with them. Not like you really care, either. You're just pissed that we're stuck out here."

Kaveri snorted with amusement. "I've got nothing to hide, man. I'll be blunt, I'm only bringing whatever I find in so the doctor'll get off our cases and not drag innocent people into a bigger mess than what we're already in," she said, shrugging.

"I'm sure you guys are having the times of your lives out here, too, dealing with us. I think it's ridiculous how everyone is getting punished for the misdeeds of one," the vulture-woman said, taking a step back, "even those who work under him, it seems. Do you guys at least get breaks?"

She waved her hand dismissively, after realizing she'd gone on a small tangent. "I apologize for ranting. I hope you guys find good use out of those things I gave you, nonetheless, so we can all just get back to our lives."

Kaveri had wondered how long it's been since she last tended her vegetable garden... provided it even survived the storm at all.

The bigger guard stepped forward to speak his mind, but Markerson stopped him. "We just can't go back inside until this mess is handled. Look, you should probably go."

He shot a look his buddy when called to the lab techs on his radio, reporting the evidence.

If Kaveri weren't so tired, she would launch into a tirade about worker's rights and ethics right then and there. However, this little bit of insight gave her a bit of sympathy for the guards, of all things -- she'd wondered if they were even forced to sleep outside. She's heard of s**t jobs before, but to be locked out of a place for who knows how long due to a paranoid jailkeeper of a doctor?

Kaveri relaxed her neck upon realizing that the guards were probably worse off than she was. At least she didn't have to spend every waking hour standing in front of a gate, dealing with a bunch of beast-men freaks like herself, standing for hours at a time... "I worry for you guys. Take it easy," she said, waving good-bye and delivering a parting shot, "Don't let The Man keep you down."

She turns on heel, ready to make the hike back home. "C'mon, Zach. Let's get outta here."

Zach had let his hand drop back to his side when he was sure he was no longer hissing. This was just too much for him. Aubrey was attacked? His first thought was honestly 'So what?' He was starting to regret having not buried the damn piece of shirt. What sort of blood could possibly have been on him?

He gave Kaveri a nod, still feeling like his tongue was in a knot of sorts. He gave one last wide-eyed stare to the guards before walking along to catch up to Kaveri's pace.
