Name: Oscar Bluff Age: 32 Sex/Preference: Male, heterosexual Occupation: Marketing consultant for a meat packing plant in Far Point, Minnesota, volunteer Little League coach. Hair: Dark brown, short (well groomed) + a slightly lighter brown moustache Eyes: Blue Height: 6" Build: Not chubby, but stocky- wide shoulders, hasn't been the the gym in a few years but used to lift casually. Good build. looks like a Minnesota man.
Personality: Calm, rational, marginally intelligent but can become moody and when he does- typically irrational. He's got a good head on his shoulders and isn't shy- although he doesn't talk often. Oscar tends to blend into the background, although all his coworkers know him as 'big guy'. Plays poker with a set group every other Wednesday, and keeps busy and around people all the time. No one really knows its because he hates to be alone.
Family: His parents both live in Des Moines, Iowa, and his father has retired from his job as a baker, but his mother still does what she always did- the 'one year wonder' they all call her. (She'll do a job for a year and then get bored and quit.) Oscar has one older brother, 35, who is a fireman in Kansas, married with two little girls (who Oscar adores). Oscar was married from 22 to 25 to a woman named Elizabeth, but they divorced due to 'irreconcilable differences'. ...Elizabeth filed. Supposedly because they couldn't get along anymore- but Oscar always "knew" that it was because the fertility doctor had told them they would never have kids- because Oscar was impotent.
History: After Elizabeth divorced him, Oscar moved out of their small house (he got the car and the dog- a basenji named Rudy) and into an apartment across town. A year after the divorce, it became too much for him to be alone all the time, and so he started to volunteer teaching Little League- and played poker with the guys every other week. Every Friday, you can find him at the Red Crane, sitting at the bar and drinking- slowly, and popping quarters into the jukebox. He's a good guy- but he doesn't talk much- and unfortunately, everywhere he goes he's around married folk: there are very few women working at the plant, and they're all married or elderly, the Little League moms all have husbands to go along with their kids... and even Sylvia who serves drinks down at the Red Crane has two lil' rugrats and a husband named Sal. Besides, Oscar would think- who would want him, if he could never have kids?
How he Gets to the Island: At the age of 32, an interesting development turned Oscar's life around. It seemed so innocent, too. Elizabeth's son Michael... enrolled in the Pee Wee Little League.
He'd seen Elizabeth around town, sure- but only every once and a while- it was a big town, and they'd been civil enough. He knew she'd gotten remarried- almost right away, to a guy she'd known in college. Some hotshot doctor from St Paul named Jake Archer. (Personally, Oscar thought Elizabeth Bluff sounded better than Elizabeth Archer...) But he didn't know that little Michael would ever come into his life. Or what that would possibly mean.
He was professional about it- he loved kids, and didn't treat Michael any differently. Sometimes he'd watch him out on first base, though, and try to blur those features that were obviously Jake's- the nose, the hair... and see only Elizabeth's eyes, her lips... those small hands, and wonder what he'd look like with perhaps his own head of hair... his nose... maybe even his big, square hands. He started to like the kid, despite himself. And he even talked to Elizabeth at some of the meets. She was looking good. She never came with Jake. They were having problems.
One night, the arguments reached a crescendo and Elizabeth turned to the one man she knew would incense her husband. Oscar. The poor man didn't know what hit him when Elizabeth showed up at his door and jumped into his arms, covering him with kisses and declarations of "I still love you, I've always loved you". He didn't know he was being manipulated. That Elizabeth and Jake had argued before over how 'chummy' she was being with her ex, and how he hated that Oscar was his son's coach.
Oscar was in love, and he thought it was for real when they spent the night together. He woke up alone- she'd gone back early to avoid being caught, he supposed... and lay in bed with such a wide smile on his face. Elizabeth would leave Jake, and bring Michael and they could be one big, happy family. Elizabeth would love him again because she had the son she'd always wanted- and Oscar would raise him like his own. Everything was good.
Ten hours later, he was drugged and on a plane- headed for the Island of Doctor Moreau.
Jake Archer, it seems, was no regular doctor. He was the head of a small pharmaceutical company that was owned by... Feral Labs. Just one of the many small arms that Moreau had, reaching into the far corners of the world. And after his wife returned at five in the morning, throwing it in his face what she'd done... he seethed, and guided his anger the only way he knew how. Revenge. It would be almost... too easy. Oscar had so few ties- so few, meaningful connections to the world. Have him 'quit' his job... move into a position of marketing consultant for his company- and then conveniently ship him overseas. Maybe he'd have a plane crash on the way over... or a boating accident. The details were for later. For now, he had only to wave goodbye as the plane took off... and to drop a basenji off at the pound...

First off, Neato! Another character over the age of 25 smile He sounds realistic, a three-dimensional character from an interesting region and occupation to pull from that most people wouldn't think about. I also like the realistic maritial issues, the impotence explaining why he wouldn't have made any steadfast ties he couldn't be pulled from (wife or kids). Which also makes him feel out of place among his friends. And the connection with Jake being with Feral Labs is an interesting twist.
