Even if you aren't for KH yaoi, Riku's still only trying so hard to help Kairi and be nice to her because he's rivals with Sora, not because he actually likes Kairi.
I mean, they make that clear when at the beginning, he thanks Kairi in front of Sora for giving him the ideas about seeing the world, but then in the flashback to before he met Kairi he's talking to Sora about how they should leave and see new worlds. o_o
