Ceremonial Magic and the Average Person + LBRP
Ceremonial magick:

Ceremonial Magic and the Average Person

By Estelle Daniels

When they get into magic, many people come into contact wiuth the magical system known as Ceremonial Magic. Perhaps it is cloaked in other guises, like Enochian, Thelema, Kabbalah, Thaumaturgy, or Geomancy, but it's out there and quite widespread. Much of Ceremonial Magic is quite formula oriented. It demands a thorough knowledge of astrology, Kabbalah, and other disciplines, and a knowledge of Hebrew would be very useful also. This is more than the average person is willing to take on just to see f that system is right for them.

There are, however, a couple of rituals used in Ceremonial Magic that are easily done and very accessible to all. The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP for short) and the Rose Cross are fairly simple and work well with most any tradition or style. They can be used by themselves, together, or be adapted to work with other types of circles and magical techniques. In our classes we make students learn and memorize these rituals so they are available to them at all times. The reason is that they are simple, effective, and when done correctly, they always produce results. No matter what state of mind you are in, no matter where you are, if you say the correct words and go through the motions, these rituals will produce a result. If you put energy into them and add the proper visulizations, the results are more effective.

This is because since these rituals were developed they have been in continous use by magicians. This has built up a cosmic energy bank on the astral, so that anyone who uses them can tap into that vast magical reservoir and benefit thereby. These rituals are also ones that cannot cause harm if done incorrectly. In other words, if you accidentally say the wronf word or visualize an incorrect color, you will not blow up, get an energy backlash, or be harmed. The worst that can happen is that nothing will happen. This is important because people can be apprehensive if they have heard some of the legends and folklore built up around ceremonial magic.

These two rituals are both magical circles. They create a sacred spacce that is cleansed and consecrated and can also provide a measure of insulation and protection to those within the circle. They are also automatic circles, and dissipate on their own. They do not need to be taken down. They are quite good for divination. Divination within a circle is more effective, for you are screening ut all the everyday static and noise. You can concentrate better and can tap into the fountains if inspiration more easily.

Ceremonial magic is quite old, though it has been growing, changing and evolving since ancient times. Most of the ceremonial magical rituals and spells are based upon Kabbalah and Hermeticism, with liveral doses of other occult disciplines thrown in. These can be argued to be the descendants of the ancient mystery schools - the anceint Greek and Egyptian rites as they were handed down through the ages - with doses of Kabbalah and Christian mysticism thrown in. Ceremonial Magic is a system, not a theology. The practitioner is calling n certain God-forms, but these are not exclusively Jewish, Christian, Greek, or Egyptian. They are an amalgam. Perhaps the god-forms would best be described as archetyoes rather than specific deities.

Most of what is published today about Ceremonial Magic descends from the Godlen Dawn, a magical group formed in the late 1800's. During the years when the Godlen Dawn was active and flourishing most of the Western mystical tradition was reviewed, revised, corrected, codified, explained, and updated by members of this group, and then written down and and passed on to their successors.

Ceremonial Magick is the main foundation of the Western magical tradition. Much energy has gone into it, and therefore it becomes a sort of "black box" technology. You do not need any psychic ability to use Ceremonial Magic, though that can help.

The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, or LBRP, is a grounding, centering, and celansing ritual. I use it alot when traveling. Once I am in my hotel room for the night, I do an LBRP and this psychially seals the room from outside psychic influences. By morning, when I am ready to leave, it has dissapated and the room is back to "normal."

The Rose Cross is another circle, but it is also useful for healing. There is a warning: do not use this ritual on anyone with an unstable heart or cardiovascular condition. The extra energy can cause problems. In any case, when doing this ritual, you can call down the energy, but let the person take as much or as little as they want. Do not force it on them.

No matter what one's tradition or training, these two rituals are useful tools in a person's magical repertoire.

Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram (invoking)

Take a steel dagger in the right hand. Face East.
Touch your forehead and say ATEH (thou art)
Touch your breast and say MALKUTH (the Kingdom)
Touch your right shoulder and say VE-GEBURAH (and the power)
Touch thy left shoulder and say VE-GEDULA (and the Glory)
Clasp thy hands before thee and say LE-OLAM (for ever)
Dagger between fingers, point upward and say AMEN.

Make in the air toward the east the invoking PENTAGRAM as shown, and, bringing the point of the dagger to the center of the pentagram, vibrate YOD HEH VAU HEH, imagining that your voice carried toward the East of the Universe.

Holding the dagger out, move to the South, make the pentagram, and vibrate ADONAI.
Move to the West, make the pentagram, and vibrate EHEHIEH.
Move to the North, make the pentagram and vibrate AGLA.
Return to the East and complete your circle by bringing the dagger point to the center of the first pentagram.

Stand with arms in the form of a cross and say:

Before me Raphael
Behind me Gabriel
At my right hand Michael
At my left hand Auriel

Before me flames the pentagram- behind me shines the six-rayed star!

Note: For banishing, reverse the direction of the pentagrams. In Golden Dawn practice, aspirants performed an invoking ritual in the morning, and banishing in the evenings.

AN ACCOUNT OF A.'. A.'.
[The Revisers wish to acknowledge gratefully the translation of Madame de Steiger, which they have freely quoted.]

IT is necessary, my dear brothers, to give you a clear idea of the interior Order; of that illuminated community which is scattered throughout the world, but which is governed by one truth and united in one spirit.

This community possesses a School, in which all who thirst for knowledge are instructed by the Spirit of Wisdom itself; and all the mysteries of nature are preserved in this school for the children of light. Perfect knowledge of nature and of humanity is taught in this school. It is from her that all truths penetrate into the world; she is the school of all who search for wisdom, and it is in this community alone that truth and the explantation of all mystery are to be found. It is the most hidden of communities, yet it contains members from many circles; nor is there any Centre of Thought whose activity is not due to the presence of one of ourselves. From all time there has been an exterior school based on the interior one, of which it is but the outer expression. From all time, therefore, there has been a hidden assembly, a society of the Elect, of those who sought for and had capacity for light, and this interior society was the Axle of the R.O.T.A. All that any external order possesses in symbol, ceremony, or rite is the letter expressive outwardly of that spirit of truth which dwelleth in the interior Sanctuary. Nor is the contradiction of the exterior any bar to the harmony of the interior.

Hence this Sanctuary, composed of members widely scattered indeed but united by the bonds of perfect love, has been occupied from the earliest ages in building the grand Temple (through the evolution of humanity) by which the reign of L.V.X. will be manifest. This society is in the communion of those who have most capacity for light; they are united in truth, and their Chief is the Light of the World himself, V.V.V.V.V., the One Anointed in Light, the single teacher for the human race, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

The interior Order was formed immediately after the first perception of man's wider heritage had dawned upon the first of the adepts; it received from the Masters at first-hand the revelation of the means by which humanity could be raised to its rights and delivered from its misery. It received the primitive charge of all revelation and mystery; it received the key of true science, both divine and natural.

But as men multiplied, the frailty of man necessitated an exterior society which veiled the interior one, and concealed the spirit and the truth in the letter, because many people were not capable of comprehending great interior truth. Therefore, interior truths were wrapped in external and perceptible ceremonies, so that men, by the perception of the outer which is the symbol of the interior, might by degrees be enabled safely to approach the interior spiritual truths.

But the inner truth has always been confided to him who in his day had the most capacity for illumination, and he became the sole guardian of the original Trust, as High Priest of the Sanctuary.

When it became necessary that interior truths should be enfolded in exterior ceremony and symbol, on account of the real weakness of men who were not capable of hearing the Light of Light, then exterior worship began. It was, however, always the type or symbol of the interior, that is to say, the symbol of the true and Secret Sacrament.

The external worship would never have been separated from interior revel but for the weakness of man, which tends too easily to forget the spirit in the letter; but the Masters are vigilant to note in every nation those who are able to receive light, and such persons are employed as agents to spread the light according to man's capacity and to revivify the dead letter.

Through these instruments the interior truths of the Sanctuary were taken into every nation, and modified symbolically according to their customs, capacity for instruction, climate, and receptiveness. So that the external types of every religion, worship, ceremonies and Sacred Books in general have more or less clearly, as their object of instruction, the interior truths of the Sanctuary, by which man will be conducted to the universal knowledge of the one Absolute Truth.

The more the external worship of a people has remained united with the spirit of esoteric truth, the purer its religion; but the wider the difference between the symbolic letter and the invisible truth, the more imperfect has become the religion. Finally, it may be, the external form has entirely parted from its inner truth, so that ceremonial observances without soul or life have remained alone.

In the midst of all this, truth reposes inviolable in the inner Sanctuary.

Faithful to the spirit of truth, the members of the interior Order live in silence, but in real activity.

Yet, besides their secret holy work, they have from time to time decided upon political strategic action.

Thus, when the earth was night utterly corrupt by reason of the Great Sorcery, the Brethren sent Mohammed to bring freedom to mankind by the sword.
This being but partially a success, they raised up one Luther to teach freedom of thought. Yet this freedom soon turned into a heavier bondage than before.

Then the Brethren delivered unto man the knowledge of nature, and the keys thereof; yet this also was prevented by the Great Sorcery.

Now then finally in nameless ways, as one of our Brethren hath it now in mind to declare, have they raised up One to deliver unto men the keys of Spiritual Knowledge, and by His work shall He be judged.

This interior community of light is the reunion of all those capable of receiving light, and it is known as the Communion of Saints, the primitive receptacle for all strength and truth, confided to it from all time.

By it the agents of L.V.X. were formed in every age, passing from the interior to the exterior, and communicating spirit and life to the dead letter, as already said.

This illuminated community is the true school of L.V.X.; it has its Chair, its Doctors; it possesses a rule for students; it has forms and objects for study.

It has also its degrees for successive development to greater altitudes.

This school of wisdom has been for ever most secretly hidden from the world, because it is invisible and submissive solely to illuminated government.

It has never been exposed to the accidents of time and to the weakness of man, because only the most capable were chosen for it, and those who selected made no error.

Through this school were developed the germs of all the sublime sciences, which were first received by external schools, then clothed in other forms, and hence degenerated.

According to time and circumstances, the society of sages communicated unto the exterior societies their symbolic hieroglyphs, in order to attract man to the great truths of their Sanctuary.

But all exterior societies subsist only by virtue of this interior one. As soon as external societies wish to transform a temple of wisdom into a political edifice, the interior society retires and leaves only the letter without the spirit. It is thus that secret external societies of wisdom were nothing but hieroglyphic screens, the truth remaining inviolable in the Sanctuary so that she might never be profaned.

In this interior society man finds wisdom and with her All --- not the wisdom of this world, which is but scientific knowledge, which revolves round the outside but never touches the centre (in which is contained all strength), but true wisdom, understanding and knowledge, reflections of the supreme illumination.

All disputes, all controversies, all the things belonging to the false cares of this world, fruitless discussions, useless germs of opinions which spread the seeds of disunion, all error, schisms, and systems are banished. Neither calumny nor scandal is known. Every man is honoured. Love alone reigns.

We must not, however, imagine that this society resembles any secret society, meeting at certain times, choosing leaders and members, united by special objects. All societies, be what they may, can but come after this interior illuminated circle. This society knows none of the formalities which belong to the outer rings, the work of man. In this kingdom of power all outward forms cease.

L.V.X. is the Power always present. The greatest man of his times, the chief himself, does not always know all the members, but the moment when it is necessary that he should accomplish any object he finds them in the world with certainty ready to his hand.

This community has no outside barriers. He who may be chosen is as the first; he presents himself among the others without presumption, and he is received by the others without jealousy.

It if be necessary that real members should meet together, they find and recognize each other with perfect certainty.

No disguise can be used, neither hypocrisy nor dissimulation could hide the characteristic qualities which distinguish the members of this society. All illusion is gone, and things appear in their true form.
No one member can choose another; unanimous choice is required. Though not all men are called, many of called are chosen, and that as soon as they become fit for entrance.

Any man can look for the entrance, and any man who is within can teach another to seek for it; but only he who is fit can arrive within.

Unprepared men occasion disorder in a community, and disorder is not compatible with the Sanctuary. Thus it is impossible to profane the Sanctuary, since admission is not formal but real.

Worldly intelligence seeks this Sanctuary in vain; fruitless also will be the efforts of malice to penetrate these great mysteries; all is indecipherable to him who is not ripe; he can see nothing, read nothing in the interior.

He who is fit is joined to the chain, perhaps often where he though least likely, and at a point of which he knew nothing himself.

To become fit should be the sole effort of him who seeks wisdom.

But there are methods by which fitness is attained, for in this holy communion is the primitive storehouse of the most ancient and original science of the human race, with the primitive mysteries also of all science. It is the unique and really illuminated community which is absolutely in possession of the key to all mystery, which knows the center and source of all nature. It is a society which unites superior strength to its own, and counts its members from more than one world. It is the society whose members form the republic of Genius, the Regent Mother of the whole World.

The Rosicrucian DOMA plates
The D.O.M.A. plates form the core of 17th Century Rosicrucian mysticism. 400 years after their creation, Manly P Hall made them available to the public through the Philosophical Research Society in Codex Rosae Crucis. This is some of the best in Christian Mysticism, that I've run across.

The Thunder, Perfect Mind

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Translated by George W. MacRae

I was sent forth from the power,

and I have come to those who reflect upon me,
and I have been found among those who seek after me.
Look upon me, you who reflect upon me,
and you hearers, hear me.
You who are waiting for me, take me to yourselves.
And do not banish me from your sight.
And do not make your voice hate me, nor your hearing.
Do not be ignorant of me anywhere or any time. Be on your guard!
Do not be ignorant of me.
For I am the first and the last.
I am the honored one and the scorned one.
I am the sleeper and the holy one.
I am the wife and the virgin.
I am and the daughter.
I am the members of my mother.
I am the barren one
and many are her sons.
I am she whose wedding is great,
and I have not taken a husband.
I am the midwife and she who does not bear.
I am the solace of my labor pains.
I am the bride and the bridegroom,
and it is my husband who begot me.
I am the mother of my father
and the sister of my husband
and he is my offspring.
I am the slave of him who prepared me.
I am the ruler of my offspring.
But he is the one who begot me before the time on a birthday.
And he is my offspring in (due) time,
and my power is from him.
I am the staff of his power in his youth,
and he is the rod of my old age.
And whatever he wills happens to me.
I am the silence that is incomprehensible
and the idea whose remembrance is frequent.
I am the voice whose sound is manifold
and the word whose appearance is multiple.
I am the utterance of my name.
Why, you who hate me, do you love me,
and hate those who love me?
You who deny me, confess me,
and you who confess me, deny me.
You who tell the truth about me, lie about me,
and you who have lied about me, tell the truth about me.
You who know me, be ignorant of me,
and those who have not known me, let them know me.
For I am knowledge and ignorance.
I am shame and boldness.
I am shameless; I am ashamed.
I am strength and I am fear.
I am war and peace.
Give heed to me.
I am the one who is disgraced and the great one.
Give heed to my poverty and my wealth.
Do not be arrogant to me when I am cast out upon the earth,
and you will find me in those that are to come.
And do not look upon me on the dung-heap
nor go and leave me cast out,
and you will find me in the kingdoms.
And do not look upon me when I am cast out among those who
are disgraced and in the least places,
nor laugh at me.
And do not cast me out among those who are slain in violence.
But I, I am compassionate and I am cruel.
Be on your guard!
Do not hate my obedience
and do not love my self-control.
In my weakness, do not forsake me,
and do not be afraid of my power.
For why do you despise my fear
and curse my pride?
But I am she who exists in all fears
and strength in trembling.
I am she who is weak,
and I am well in a pleasant place.
I am senseless and I am wise.
Why have you hated me in your counsels?
For I shall be silent among those who are silent,
and I shall appear and speak,
Why then have you hated me, you Greeks?
Because I am a barbarian among the barbarians?
For I am the wisdom of the Greeks
and the knowledge of the barbarians.
I am the judgement of the Greeks and of the barbarians.
I am the one whose image is great in Egypt
and the one who has no image among the barbarians.
I am the one who has been hated everywhere
and who has been loved everywhere.
I am the one whom they call Life,
and you have called Death.
I am the one whom they call Law,
and you have called Lawlessness.
I am the one whom you have pursued,
and I am the one whom you have seized.
I am the one whom you have scattered,
and you have gathered me together.
I am the one before whom you have been ashamed,
and you have been shameless to me.
I am she who does not keep festival,
and I am she whose festivals are many.
I, I am godless,
and I am the one whose God is great.
I am the one whom you have reflected upon,
and you have scorned me.
I am unlearned,
and they learn from me.
I am the one that you have despised,
and you reflect upon me.
I am the one whom you have hidden from,
and you appear to me.
But whenever you hide yourselves,
I myself will appear.
For whenever you appear,
I myself will hide from you.
Those who have [...] to it [...] senselessly [...].
Take me [... understanding] from grief.
and take me to yourselves from understanding and grief.
And take me to yourselves from places that are ugly and in ruin,
and rob from those which are good even though in ugliness.
Out of shame, take me to yourselves shamelessly;
and out of shamelessness and shame,
upbraid my members in yourselves.
And come forward to me, you who know me
and you who know my members,
and establish the great ones among the small first creatures.
Come forward to childhood,
and do not despise it because it is small and it is little.
And do not turn away greatnesses in some parts from the smallnesses,
for the smallnesses are known from the greatnesses.
Why do you curse me and honor me?
You have wounded and you have had mercy.
Do not separate me from the first ones whom you have known.
And do not cast anyone out nor turn anyone away
[...] turn you away and [... know] him not.
[...].
What is mine [...].
I know the first ones and those after them know me.
But I am the mind of [...] and the rest of [...].
I am the knowledge of my inquiry,
and the finding of those who seek after me,
and the command of those who ask of me,
and the power of the powers in my knowledge
of the angels, who have been sent at my word,
and of gods in their seasons by my counsel,
and of spirits of every man who exists with me,
and of women who dwell within me.
I am the one who is honored, and who is praised,
and who is despised scornfully.
I am peace,
and war has come because of me.
And I am an alien and a citizen.
I am the substance and the one who has no substance.
Those who are without association with me are ignorant of me,
and those who are in my substance are the ones who know me.
Those who are close to me have been ignorant of me,
and those who are far away from me are the ones who have known me.
On the day when I am close to you, you are far away from me,
and on the day when I am far away from you, I am close to you.
[I am ...] within.
[I am ...] of the natures.
I am [...] of the creation of the spirits.
[...] request of the souls.
I am control and the uncontrollable.
I am the union and the dissolution.
I am the abiding and I am the dissolution.
I am the one below,
and they come up to me.
I am the judgment and the acquittal.
I, I am sinless,
and the root of sin derives from me.
I am lust in (outward) appearance,
and interior self-control exists within me.
I am the hearing which is attainable to everyone
and the speech which cannot be grasped.
I am a mute who does not speak,
and great is my multitude of words.
Hear me in gentleness, and learn of me in roughness.
I am she who cries out,
and I am cast forth upon the face of the earth.
I prepare the bread and my mind within.
I am the knowledge of my name.
I am the one who cries out,
and I listen.
I appear and [...] walk in [...] seal of my [...].
I am [...] the defense [...].
I am the one who is called Truth
and iniquity [...].
You honor me [...] and you whisper against me.
You who are vanquished, judge them (who vanquish you)
before they give judgment against you,
because the judge and partiality exist in you.
If you are condemned by this one, who will acquit you?
Or, if you are acquitted by him, who will be able to detain you?
For what is inside of you is what is outside of you,
and the one who fashions you on the outside
is the one who shaped the inside of you.
And what you see outside of you, you see inside of you;
it is visible and it is your garment.
Hear me, you hearers
and learn of my words, you who know me.
I am the hearing that is attainable to everything;
I am the speech that cannot be grasped.
I am the name of the sound
and the sound of the name.
I am the sign of the letter
and the designation of the division.
And I [...].
(3 lines missing)
[...] light [...].
[...] hearers [...] to you
[...] the great power.
And [...] will not move the name.
[...] to the one who created me.
And I will speak his name.
Look then at his words
and all the writings which have been completed.
Give heed then, you hearers
and you also, the angels and those who have been sent,
and you spirits who have arisen from the dead.
For I am the one who alone exists,
and I have no one who will judge me.
For many are the pleasant forms which exist in numerous sins,
and incontinencies,
and disgraceful passions,
and fleeting pleasures,
which (men) embrace until they become sober
and go up to their resting place.
And they will find me there,
and they will live,
and they will not die again.

Sepher Yetsriah the Book of Formation; the 231 gates....
I came across this book sometime ago when I was just "getting into" Kabblah and lately I've been going back to this book and really reading it over again with a fresh and more open mind. I'm wondering if anyone here might be able to tell me anything about "The Great Work" or pathworking i.e. going from sefirot to sefirot. Here's what I know; the 32 paths of wisdom are the ten sefirot (hebrew numbers 1-10, i.e. the decimal system we know and love) and the 22 letters of the hebrew alphebet which are named the 12 elementals, the 7 doubles, and the 3 mothers. I believe that in genesis, in regards to the torahs version of creation, the ten sefirot are the verses where god "said", the three mothers are the verses where god "made", the seven doubles are where god "saw" and the twelve elementals are the remaining verses. On a small side note I consider the sefirot to be building blocks of creation, the mothers to be the consept of god making creation like a woman creates children in her womb, the doubles are the letters that have two pronouciations(sp), and the elementals are gods interaction w/ creation. So the sefirot are the numbers and the mothers/doubles/elementals are the letters but what I don't understand is the gates. I know that the 231 gates are involved in transcending the 32 paths of wisdom or states of consiousness(sp) but I'm still unclear about their specific roll. Does it have something to do with the sefirot being a five demensional symbol? No that would account for only sixteen points...thirtytwo really if its five demensional.... can anyone clue me in?

Kabblah Circle:

In order to cast the kabblahistic circle one must have an understanding of the hebrew language. Or at least the 22 primary letters of the alphebet. Three mothers, seven doubles, and 12 elementals (also called singles by some kabblahists). In kabblah the art of circle casting is a meditative tool used to allow the initiate to climb the tree of life after oscilating between binah and chakahmah consiousness. Once one has entered the frame of mind of chakahmah one can proceed to start from the bottom and work their way up. Now the sephirot are actually resting points and the letters (being as paths) are what you are actually traveling (metiphorically/metaphysically). In the afore mentioned meditation the initiate imagines the 22 letters all around themselves in a circle. Since each letter has a top middle and bottom you must imagine the bottom of each as a floor the middles rising up as walls and the tops converging in a roof by making each letter top connect to each of the other ones 231 times (these are your 231 gates). You then seperate the ten sephirot into two arrays rather then the usual three pillars. You put the lower half of the middle pillar and the negitive pillar (the left one) in your left hand as a five sephirot array and do the same for the right hand with the positive pillar and the upper half of the middle pillar. This creates a spiritual tension between the hands. Primitive versions of this are noted as being where the circle is phyically walked or drawn. Another variation exists where the letters are "seen" on the horizon rather then in a circle. While the letters are being placed in their proper locations and being built up a "sacred space" is created and with the gates a cone of power. Spelling errors aside that is the best way I know of to cast a circle "kabblah style".

Cheers,
Grimm

Holy hell, Grimm, that's a heck of a lot of info you've posted up! Thanks again so much for adding to the guild like this. I especially love the table of Tarot correspondences (I've been reading for years and years 3nodding ) I'll come back and browse through when I'm a bit less tired. xp
