[ Jizo Bosatsu ] ღஐღ crying My doctor told me that I can't fast. He says I'm still recovering from my stress-induced weight loss. Boo-urns! My apologies, haena_nights26! I really wanted to take part in this, but I trust what my doctor has to say. xD Thank you for asking your doctor first (smart move). I forgot to mention that asking your doctor is the first step. Apologies to you all. My bad. sweatdrop

I understand how fasting can be a great way to show dedication, and remember to be mindful. But, somehow I find that depriving the body of nutrition for so long seems somewhat ignorant. I'll definately participate on the 13th, though. Vesak is quite the occasion. heart
Thanks for reminding me. I almost forgot about it last year. <3

haena_nights26 Thank you, Makoto. Yes thats a good way to honor the occasion. I simply choose the not eating thing because I've been doing for quite a few Vesaks, now. Anyone else have ideas for ways to honor Vesak? I do not know if this is exactly honoring Vesak but I am deciding to take my Buddhist practice seriously! I have been slacking way too much and I want to observe the precepts..heck..I can start now actually! I do not know if I can participate in fasting (is that ok) since I worry my family when I do not eat (I tend to not eat when I am sick..that is why) so is there anything else I can do?

Quote: I do not know if I can participate in fasting (is that ok) since I worry my family when I do not eat (I tend to not eat when I am sick..that is why) so is there anything else I can do? Sure it's okay if you don't...not eat. Um. Yeah, not-fasting is alright too. Just do whatever you do mindfully, like Makoto said! Read some scripture, devote yourself to your practice, and if you can swing it, head out to a local center or monatery on the day itself with some food offering and listen to the dharma straight from a monk or nun. 3nodding Reflections on the life of the Buddha are also popular, so if you have a version of that to read, you can do that too. If you don't, you can always look one up at Buddhanet.net.

Thank you so much Byaggha!! Unfortunately there is no center nearby nor any monk or nun..but I will try my very best not to push my self to the extremes though (that really does not work at all!). Thanks again!

Do keep in mind, though, that the Buddha himself tried extremes. They got him no closer to the truth, and almost killed him through starvation. Please be careful, and moderate! smile

Through fasting I find a connection to those who don't even have the choice of doing so... they simply have to do it every day. And through this understanding, compassion is gained. It's also good dicipline. 13 days is actually a short fast. Plus I recieved a clean bill of health and an O.K. from my doctor. Personally, I think it's directly connected with the person and how they precieve the world. Simply reading up on something doesn't exactly trigger compassion within me. Starvation is just a breif glimpse of what the people of our world suffer. To me, knowledge is experience, and experience is compassion. And that's just me.

Yepyep, that was intended more as a reminder to Shokai than a statement directed to you - I had a feeling, given your history of doing this before, that you were well aware of what you were doing. After all, what's the point of doing something like this if you don't keep aware? Then you'd just be hungry and suffering monkey-mind as usual. biggrin
