Ok, here's the general story idea:
It is the year 2057, and the world has become more unstable than it has ever been before. After going through a second Cold War and the various crises that ensued, and the severe lack of oil threatening to destroy the world's economy at last, things are tense among the world's remaining superpowers. The middle-east had finally been unified by a sudden, and very violent, yet brief conquest by a young ruler who merely called himself Aji. China had finally taken over as the world's leading economic superpower, though it still lagged slightly in matters of technology. To keep up with the growing threat in the east, all of Western Europe, with of course the traditional exception of Switzerland, had finally formed a single military, economic, and politcal entity, the Eurostates Alliance. The nations of Africa had long been falling into turmoil and were no more unified than ever.
And then there was, of course, the Americas. The USA had been in a slow but steady decline from its position in world politics over the last decade or two, and while it still held significant power economically, technologically, and, yes, militarily, its reputation had been degraded, particularly in the east, and thus its sphere of influence had more or less shrunk back to North and South America. But it followed Europe's example and eventually unified its Latin-American neighbors to the south. Only Canada remained separate from the USA, though only barely. Despite the unification of America with its southern allies, the nation itself was growing unstable from the inside. For the last several decades, political and social unrest had been growing a division in America's own interior.
So there were 4 main world superpowers- China and its surrounding allies, Aji's Empire, the Eurostates Alliance, and the United Nations of America. And frankly, the world didn't have enough room for them. The population was growing too fast, and resources were running out. Many civilians in various areas of the world used the growing unrest as fuel for their personal agendas to begin various failed revolutions and revolts. Many people starved in various places from lack of food to keep up with the booming population, moreso than ever before. And the planet itself was suffering as well. Pollution and unchecked clearing of rainforests and the like had wreaked havoc on its delicate ecosystems. While various amazing technological advances had kept the weather relatively in-check and stored rapidly-becomming-extinct animal DNA for future cloning, Earth could only take so much more. All in all, the world was poised on the brink of utter catastrophe.
And then it came. On one fateful day, a powerful bomb destroyed a key government building in China, and black sedan was seeing fleeing the area moments afterward. When caught, the driver, who had committed suicide via cyanide moments before the van door was forced open, was revealed to have an American uniform. The uproar that followed shook the entire civilized world. It would not be discovered until far too late that man was in fact a special Ajian agent in desguise. Several other such instances occurred soon afterward, and before it could be stopped, the third, and final, world war had begun. Initially the Eurostates Alliance remained neutral, though China's secret ally, Aji, built up a force on the Eurroppean front, just to be on the safe side. With dramatically less oil to fuel their forces, the Americans were hard-pressed to defend against the Aji-Chinese attack, but they pulled it off. Suddenly Aji invaded eastern Europe and brought the rest of the western world into the conflict. Aji's dreams of conquest soon became apparent when his army blasted its way west, through Africa, then back up to its north to Russia. The EA was soon surrounded on nearly all fronts, and there seemed to be little hope.
But as luck would have it, China backed down when revolts started after the discovery of the Infamous Bomber's true identity. However, even when China turned on its trecherous ally, Aji's empire had grown too strong, and was nigh impossible to destroy. Large portions of eastern Asia were quickly conquered by the growing forces of the Empire. As America healed its wounds and began preparing itself for a joint-assault with the EA on Africa, the world's worst nightmare began- Nuclear Warfare. The infamous mushroom cloud appeared in a deafening roar over an Ajian research base in Siberia. Nobody knows who (or what...) caused it, as most of the world's nukes had finally been disarmed and destroyed years before, but there were clearly a few left. Several other nukes exploded in Africa, Germany, Australia, and, yes, the Americas. But that was only the begginning of the apocalypse. With advances in technology, bizarre and horrible weapons were entering the battlefield, including the ultimate in biological warfare- genetically-altered creatures known as "Battleslaves" and cybernetically-enhanced troops. Not long after nuclear fallout occurred and extremely devastating diseases started to pop up, all nations fell apart, as people began fighting amongst their own kin and neighbors. When the world was finally in total chaos, nature finally took its revenge- a vengeance that had been building for centuries of abuse.
After the war, which had lasted nearly 50 years, the smoke and debris from industry and battle corrupted the atmosphere, as well as the chemicals used in chemical warfare, and in many places the sky took a dark green color and began storming constantly, with acid rain. And we're not talking the "Oh darn, my paint job!" acid rain... this more the "OH GOD MY SKIN IS MELT-AGGGGHHHHH!!!" sort. Climates shifted and spiralled out of control. A massive hurricane formed on the west-African coast and wrecked nearly the entire continent. The entire north pole, as well as a large portion of antartica, melted away entirely, but the runoff quickly evaporated under sizzling temperatures to further fuel immense storm systems. Severe ion storms in the Earth's upper atomosphere knocked many satellites out of orbit, raining fireballs down on already-devastated cities and remote villages all over the world.
After the weather finally calmed down at least a little bit, new species of animal, plant, disease, and fungi appeared world-wide and began preying on everything in sight- including the drastically weakened human race. With the once-proud race now cowering in fear and disarray, the world was taken over by bizarre, almost alien jungles with mutated lifeforms never seen before, evolution sped up by radiation mutation in some areas, while hindered in others.
With the tables now turned, mankind was a thing of the past. Once the proud, powerful, dominant species on the planet, it was slammed from its delusions of self-importance and invulnerability with the almighty power of nature's ultimate fury. There were only a few surviving cities and towns left, where mankind lived out its remaining exitence in fear. However, some humans survived in an altered-existance through bionic, genetic, and other enhancements. Others, mutated from the devastating affects of the war, roamed the Earth as a completely different species, most turned savage and mindless like their ancient ancestors, though some retained their sentience.
Humans were no longer alone, either. For ages, people around the world had looked to the skies in search of alien creatures with equal or higher intelligence. However, those beings were now found on their own planet, amongst the expanding jungles of the new Earth. While most were indeed altered humans themselves, rumor had it a few mutated animal species had achieved a sentience of their own and were beginning to crawl out into their new world to enter the niche mankind left behind.
But the world was still not stable- far from it. Mutations were too common and evolution was progressing too fast thanks to the wild effects of radiation, chemical affects, and... other, unknown forces. For little did anyone know, there was another force that had been re-awoken in the world by the chaos and destruction: magic.
Magic was once the powerful, prevalent force on Earth, until the dawn of mankind. But for whatever reason, early humans were afraid and spiteful of this mystical force, and a number of them quickly hoarded as much magical power as they could for themselves, then hid it away in ancient tablets, statues, talismans, scepters, and other artifacts that were eventually buried and lost to history, and soon lost in history, going from fact, to legend, to fairy tales, to eventually being forgotten altogether.
But with mankind crippled to near-extinction, it again appeared for the taking. But what would the world's new citizens do with it? And what will become of the crippled planet? It had stabalized somewhat since the end of the war, but it was still unsteady, and could topple itself again any time. One thing was clear: anyone wishing to continue to survive more than a few generations would have to do the unthinkable- leave Earth forever. Luckily a number of old human derilict places still existed with working equipment amongst the ruins, including one or two spaceports that were being built to send the first manned flights to Alpha Centauri and beyond, before the war. Though most were now overtaken by jungle and home to dangerous predators, they could, in theory, be used to launch at least one trip to beyond our solar system.
With the combination of mutated evolution and the newly-revived era of magic, many sentient creatures were around, from cyborgs to meta-humans, to intelligent cave-squid, to some things that can't be described, to some that really are best left that way. So, who will make it? Who will survive long enough to escape the dying Earth?

Ok, so here's what I was thinking... the RP can actually go about in two ways:
1. Everyone starts off where the story leaves off above, and the characters meet up somehow, and decide to work together to survive, then meets a guy who tells them about the rockets and how they can must escape Earth while they still can.
2. The same as above, except instead of starting where the story left off, we could do some time-skipping, where we start off with characters back during the beginning of the war, as soliders actually doing the fighting. And we would skip to significant battles. Then we'd skip to the end of the war... then to the point when magic first arises, as the characters who first discover it... then to where the story leaves off... then, after they finally leave Earth (IF they do, that is.... dundundun!), to when they're travelling accross the galaxy, and then, finally, to when they land on a strange, alien world, that is far more advanced magically than they are.
Either way would work for me. The second option would probably be far more interesting I'd think, though it'd probably also take more time. And yes, either way, this will be a long-lasting RP, hopefully. So I need dependable players who are willing to keep up an RP for what could turn out to be a very long, but enjoyable, time.
Also, while I will have characters at various points in the RP, I don't think I'll be making a permanant one for myself, as I'll probably stick to NPCing and such for now. I'll also be doing the "villains" that show up at various points, though I MIGHT let someone else help with that. (See below) So, in other words, I'll be sort of the "Gamemaster" here.
You guys know how I feel about crowded RPs- too many players ish no fun. So I want to keep this to about 3-4 player characters, 5 at most, so hurry and join if you're interested! However, I will, at various points in the story, accept temporary players for various roles, particularly with certain villains- but you must understand that these characters WILL die or otherwise be "taken out of the picture" at some point in time during the RP; hence why they're temporary players.
