((gnaah - sorry I was gone for so long))

Akari stood half-erect, trying to catch her breath as her dragons warded off the she-demon. Her anger was pushing her to stand tall, but a strange weariness was creeping over her. She absentmidnedly clutched at her arm as she kept her eyes on the fight.

First one dragon, then another, fell before the demon's attack. She was like a whirlwind, a storm with a sword's edge.

Akari straightened again as the demon struck close to her. The warrior sketched a symbol in the air. Then, she leapt for the two defenders.

The third and final dragon ran between them, bodychecking the attacker.

Shiimiko was thrown to the ground by the sudden force. Before she could slash at the golem, it leapt away again and circled from a distance. A few feet from sword range, it opened its mouth and roared.

A great wall of flame rushed out to meet the death-maiden.

The two changelings could not see her; she was surrounded by the rush of heat and light.

But before they could attack her . . .

The flames parted before her, revealing her unharmed. She laughed, holding the flames at bay with her hand.

"You fool. You use fire against me? I serve the Tiger Clan. Fire is my ally."

She waved her hand, tossing most of the fire back at the dragon, who narrowly avoided the blast. Then she motioned again with her hand, the same symbol as before, and the last of the fire was absorbed into her. She seemed to glow with new energy.

Akari's eyes widened in horror, and she slumped to her knees. Reason flooded back into her mind, pushing back the rage. She came to her senses in the middle of fire and doubt.

What she had thought would be her greatest weapon had become a liability. She would have to find some other way to use what she thought her only asset - the dragon - to distract or hurt the demon so the man beside her could kill it. And this wasn't a computer game - she didn't have an infinite number of lives to use in trial and error.

She surrendered to the fact that she couldn't do this by herself. She looked up at her only ally. "I don't know how to take her down," she gasped through pain. "What do we do?"

He had been more successful at hurting the demon before. Akari would trust his judgement and obey his orders.

And maybe, just maybe, she might still be able to help in this fight.

Shiimiko only took a second to bask in the energy from the flames. The girl could only hurt her with the dragon, and that would be easily enough dealt with. Then the boy, with his short staff. Then Shii would have two heads to bring to her master.

((I'm half-afraid I'm making Akari overpowered, and half-afraid she's underpowered. I mean, she makes things from drawings. Whoopdedoo. She's not much of a fighter, and right now she's leaking blood. How much can she contribute?

On the other hand, she has a frickin' dragon. Maybe that was a bit too much sweatdrop

So, yeah. Not exactly sure how to collaborate on a fight, instead of fighting seperately side-by-side. So I'll let you lead the fight, and I'll try to pick up on cues. Also, feel free to decide what Akari will do at the same time you're beating on Shiimiko biggrin ))

Derek knew as little as Akari about their attacker; never before had he seen anything like this strange demon with her power. He was outright amazed at the way she handled fire, but then again, what could they have expected.

The Tiger Clan was not known for its kindness or its love. Everyone knew of the clan's existence and of their ruthlessness. Even in the modern day, it seemed so unlikely, and yet...so real.

Derek wanted to aid the dragon, for although the creature was not real, it still had something akin to intelligence and that was enough. Yet, he held back, knowing that fighting out right was going to do little good. Against monsters one didn't toss a stick.

"I don't know how to take her down," Akari gasped through pain. "What do we do?"

Derek moved until he standing directly between Shii and the artist, his gaze on the demon. To Akari he said slowly, "Do you draw water dragons by any chance, or something else, like the sea? Water works well against fire, I think." A moment later he said, "Remember, whatever strength you may have comes from wanting it to be true. Have faith that we'll win, and so it will be."

His train of thought was lost about then as Shii attacked. Protect the girl at all costs. This is your duty. To fail is to die. He parried with the stick, but the demon easily sliced through it. Ducking, he aimed a kick at the demon's legs, but she caught him instead. One powerful kick sent him flying against a tree, where Derek promptly crumbled to the ground.

Deciding to deal with him first, Shii moved in his general direction, her sword upraised. Again, the voice reminded him that he needed to protect Akari, and only that notion got him back to his feet. His nose was bleeding and the back of his shirt was in tatters, but at least both were still alive.

Swallowing, Derek ducked the demon's next swing and hit her in the stomach as hard as he could. She stepped back, then growled. Again, she raised her sword above the ground and held it.

"Why do you even bother defying me?" she asked, mocking him. "Do you care that much for the recluse over there?"

Derek blinked. The question caught him unawares, as did the next three blows. Staggering backwards, he looked up at the demon with wide, lavender eyes. "It's my duty," he answered plainly before attacking once again, probably for the last time, for he was quickly running out of both strength and blood.

((To answer your question, you decide based on how realistic your character feels. When I created Derek I made some choices about the kind of strengths he would possess. I decided that he would have almost no magic, be unable to cast spells or do anything else of that nature. Instead I made him very focused towards hand to hand combat. So, when it comes to that, I have some creative license as to what he can and can't do. However, he is not going to be able to do anything magical, such as calling up dragons or making water out of thin air.

His strengths lie more in the battle than anything else. So, he can be a quick healer in some situations and he can aim and get blows in when it comes to battle. His weaknesses lay in his lack of knowledge and ability with any kind of power.

In the same fashion, you can have some fun with your character. Decide what her strengths and weaknesses are. Make a list, if it helps. Then work backwards and try to get a feel for what she can do and what would motivate her to a certain action.

Also, since Shii is an NPC, her abilities don't have to compare with yours. She can be stronger than both Derek and Akari and still lose. In short, Shii's abilities depend on what is needed. In this case what was needed was a much stronger opponent against whom, winning would have some meaning. Shii fits that criteria. You are allowed to kill her with a blast of water however because she has served her purpose.

Hope this helps a little.

Through her fear, Akari heard the boy speak.

"Do you draw water dragons by any chance, or something else, like the sea? Water works well against fire, I think." He stood between her and the demon, so all she saw was his strong back. "Remember, whatever strength you may have comes from wanting it to be true. Have faith that we'll win, and so it will be."

Water! Water, I can do water . . . right?

She struggled with her mind, screening out the fight before her. She had to pull her head together.

When she'd started to fight, she'd been ruled by anger and passion. It gave her confidence, strength. But it also made her arrogant and unwise. If she let it control her again, she would only get killed.

When she returned to reason, she was smarter, able to think. But she was overcome by fear, paralyzed.

She had to keep her head. She had to think, not be stupid. But how could she keep reason without losing to fear?

She found her answer in her partner. Trust.

She knew, somehow, that she could count on him. She was still afraid, but she could trust him to fight, to defend, to make sure that everything went as well as it could hope to.

It's like in those computer games I play, how the mage has to be protected by the warrior while she casts her spell.

And I am casting a spell, in a way . . . which means he's counting on me.

But at least I know I can count on him . . .

As hard as it was for her, she put her safety totally in his hands.

--

Water. How can I get water?

She crouched over some of the blank papers left behind by her summonings. With her hands she rummaged for her pencils while with her thoughts she rummaged for ideas.

She couldn't find a pencil, but she had plenty of blood dripping from her arm. She decided that would work well enough.

She had to summon water somehow, and through something easy (and quick) to draw. How?

A sea dragon, like he said? No, too complicated to draw -
A lake? But how the hell would I summon that?
Rain? Maybe a thunderstorm? Can I even create one of those? I don't know!
I need something simple - like a bucket of water - but lots of it, and easy to get on the she-demon -
That's it.

She hurriedly sketched some simple lines on the paper, while two warriors fought around her.

--

Drawing complete, she leaned back. I have to make it real.

She concentrated, imagining that her creation had substance, weight. In her mind it was sitting beside her on the grass.

It will be real. It will.

And suddenly, it was.

A large ivory barrel stood on the ground. Akari knew that it was full of water, because she'd decided it was.

A long, thick hose snaked out from the bottom of the barrel. It was connected to a two-handled gun - a gun with a very fast pump, and a trigger.

Akari snatched up the gun and pointed it at the enemy.

Her ally had been pushed back by an attack. "It's my duty," he said, and Akari wondered what she had missed.

Then he charged, just as she pulled the trigger.

A fierce jet of water hit the woman square in the side. She let out a sound that Akari could only describe as a squeal. She seemed both shocked and pained.

Akari continued to douse her with a steady stream. As her ally neared his target, the woman seemed to grow weaker and weaker, and she was very distracted. While the dragon's fire had made her stronger, the water seemed to sap away her very lifeblood.

The barrel emptied itself very quickly. But she had the feeling that the demon would be gone very, very soon.

((the killing blow is all yours! I always intended Akari to be a sort of a 'support mage'. She doesn't do much of the actual fighting - her strength is providing weapons, shielding, useful tools. Not butt-kicking, though.

About the whole 'fire' thing - you said in the setup that Earth and Fire are the elements most closely associated with the Tiger Clan, while Water and Air belong to their opponents. So I figured that fire might not be the best weapon for me to attack Shiimiko with.

As to me calling her 'demon' and naming her 'Death-Maiden (shi - miko)' - when you first described her, you said she seemed 'cruel and calculating', but the way you described her seemed oddly mechanical to me. I thought she must have seemed like some inhuman demon to Akari. Maybe a servant summoned or created to serve the Tiger Clan. It's totally up to you whether she's actually human or not, though, since you created her smile

Sorry if I've drawn this whole fight out too long!))

It rained? No that wasn't right, although Derek had this feeling that he'd just been rained on. Standing far too close to the demon he had gotten soaked right along with Shii, although all it did for him was wash away some of the blood on his knees and elbows. Stepping back with a yelp at the cold water, he glanced at Akari with a sense of wonder. How had she managed that he had no idea, but right now he wasn't about to ask questions.

Shii turned to face the oncoming water, shielding her face with her hands. She took one step forwards and let out a shriek, but by then it was a bit too late. The spells that gave the demon strength and cohesion washed away, leaving her as little more than a black blob that hovered in the air for a moment.

Red eyes glared at Derek, then at Akari, then at Derek again. A voice from seemingly nowhere said, "You have no idea what you're getting into, Changeling. Your life is worthless, and now you've made yourself known. The Tiger Clan will come after you."

Derek shrugged and staggered to his feet. "Maybe," he said, swaying a little. "Doesn't matter, though. Begone, creature."

Then, the darkness was gone, leaving behind an ancient and rather pretty dress as well as a lot of muddy grass in one area. Where the demon had stood, the grass had wilted, turning brown and dry, but all around it was now sparklingly green. The sun was shining again, and the wind had died down a little, scattering leaves and ruffling hair.

Derek swallowed past the pain and took a step towards Akari, only to be stopped again by the strange not-quite-memory. It was like seeing a background of the park with someone else in the foreground, someone who obviously didn't belong to the scene. The feeling was near enough to knock him off his feet again.

The black-eyed man was back, grinning. "Very good. I didn't expect for you both to live. So much better than expected. Now, get the girl and go home. You don't want to be here when her master shows up. Guarantee it."

Derek sighed. He was far too worn out for words, but asked nonetheless, "What's next?"

"Who knows," Tamon answered. "Get gone."

He returned to normal, his eyes and hair getting back their original colors. The sword was just a stick again, laying forgotten not too far from Derek's feet. Slowly because walking was a difficult task, he made his way over to the artist, whose name he still didn't know, and knelt beside her.

"Hi," he said softly, voice hoarse and barely audible. "I'm Derek. What's your name, Spell Caster?"

((I've seen people describe monsters so thoroughly that I had no wonder whether the right lower fang was bigger than the left. And that just gets to me. I always see it in this fashion: every player adds to the story so why not let them pick and choose monsters. Seems like if we all work on creature it will look much scarier than if we do it individually.))
