H'lo. I'm not a competitive Irish dancer, but this is my fourth year in the class at my school (all hail the greatest variety of arts in SoCal!). This year my level is being considered Novice, though we're really more like Beginner IIs since most of us haven't actually competed outside of school.
My teacher is a Preliminary Champion, and so is one of the girls in the class (heh... we only have one boy right now...). Then there's a... I think Prizewinner? but maybe she's only Novice, or part-way between. The other Novice/Prizewinner isn't in the class anymore. They all study at Fearon-O'Connor.
My favorite softshoe dance is probably the slip jig... but I really do love hardshoe (especially now that I actually have hardshoes instead of tap shoes... O.o). In hardshoe... gosh, I can't decide. I love 'em all. Ooh. I also like ceili. We're doing the Kerry Sets right now, but I also like Faery Reel, Haymakers Jig, and Three Tunes.
Every year our club, Cara Go Celtica, puts on a performance at the Winter Dance Concert, and also for St. Patrick's Day (of course). We usually dance to stuff like AfroCelt Sound System, which is always fun. We're also beginning to be cursed, so that every year one of us dances in a cast (I was it last year with a broken wrist! This year it was someone else... but I still broke my toe... crying ).
At the end of the year, we watch Riverdance, or Lord of the Dance. I admit, however, that I positively detest Michael Flatley...

Heh... on that note, however, a story I find humorous. At the end of a few years ago, we were watching... one of the older Flatley ones (Riverdance or Lord of the Dance, I can't remember), and some of the younger girls were talking about how hot he was. At the time, I had heard a certain story in the news about him... so, in my usual impish manner, I decided to enlighten them. "He's also just been accused of rape!"
Ah, the looks on their faces...

xd My teacher hates him as well. Mainly because his coreography isn't really "traditional" irish dance -- they move their hands a lot. She also doesn't like the whole bit of him trying to upity his stuff with sex apeal. She does think that a lot of the foot work is impressive. smile Especially in Celtic Tiger.

I won a Riverdancing Contest at the community center last St. Patty's Day... Never had a lesson in my life, either.

Ooh! Apparently the preliminary champion in my class just became an open champion! *jigs madly around the room*

And I officially got my first hardshoe blister today... after having had and worn hardshoes for months... gonk
I wondered what that strange burning sensation during toewalks was... stressed

I haven't even learned hardshoe yet and they bug the heck out of my feet (i tried on my teacher's pair once. She was selling them. I tried some rallies but failed miserably...)

Toewalks will get ya everytime. I got my daughter some hard shoes with those new lacings. The ones that lace up similar to the ghillies. We've had a few less blisters, but they still bother her feet at times.

I know this topic is old news, but I saw the posts and I had to comment. I have to disagree with your teacher, and I guees, agree with you about Flatley. I like him. If it wasn't for him, Irish Dancing wouldn't be how it is today. I mean, I'm not sure how many of you know this, but Colin Dunne was Lord of the Dance before Flatley, he danced with Jean Butler first and was world champ for 8 years. Sadly, not many learned about irish dance when he was doing it. And he seemed like a decent fellow. Then Flatley came along, he brought Irish dancing to a whole new level. And whether anyone wants to admitt it or not, if it wasn't for him, well being an irish dancer wouldn't be a big deal. I mean, when people find out your an irish dancer, they get this look in this eye, that says wow. your an irish dancer. When my sister was dancing, there would be maybe 10, 15 at most dancing in her age. Ever since Flatley did Riverdance, etc, Irish dancing has hit a major boom, even now, dancing schools are popping up everywhere. His new style, and non-traditional style gave Irish dancing the boast it needed. And I personally like his style, it brings the old and the new togetherm it bridges a gap of the older people of our time witth the youth, bringing many generations together. I say, go Flatley! Keep on movin' those fleet of flames!

Personally, I don't like Flatley. He comes across as very arrogant. I do have to give credit where credit is due, though. He's done an awful lot for Irish dance and opened a whole world of possibilities for the kids over here.
Personally, I prefer Colin Dunne (Dancing on Dangerous Ground was awesome!), but I have to give Michael Flately credit for opening up Irish Dance over here.

I just came back home from my first feis. biggrin It was a lot of fun, despite the fact that I got terrible shin splints. But eh.
Because our school isn't very competative, we only have one feis a year, so yup. It isn't much to those hard core dancers, seriously. It was a fun little cometition though.
I'm off to wash my hair now to get all the gell and hair spray out. Oi. I just want to vegitate on the couch for a while and eat chocolate while watching a chick flick...
