Well yesterday, I think its safe to say that I had my first, real, jam session. I enjoyed myself. There where two guitars, a vocalist keyboards, myself and another bassist. Though the other girl, who was clearly better than me on the bass, kept letting me play, wich I think was nice of her, aparently she hadn't played in a year and a half. Got a interesting tip on slapping, and she showed me a chord or two.
To be honest it was quite a busy sound, especially with Ian guitar battling Chris for lead guitar, and then there was Phil on keyboards who just banged away on the keyboards, made a interesting repoduction of the intro to metallica's one. Did the sound effects and everthing.
Anyway I found that as long as people started playing the same thing over, I could experiment and I efentually found some basslines that I think worked. They where simple in thier methnod and insanely basic to play. I just hung around on the top two strings, trying to figure out things that worked. Towards the end I was following Chris on guitar, and we came up with a decient little song. Im going to practice my a** off I want to get better quicker.
So: How often do you jam? Where do you pratcice, etc etc. Do you practice/prepare alone for your jam sessions? If so how? Any tips for me? Anything els?

i jam every blue moon with people... yes i do practice, play the songs that the people know for you know them and then you get a good feeling cause you can play along with everyone practice your a** off and get better and dont practice and over do yourself...take breaks and such since i actually got sick of bass cause i was forcing myself to keep playing

i jam with my band probably 1nce every other weekend. and the only advice i can really give you is: well if you have a good ear just try to pic things up and play in the same chord progressions as the guitars, and every once in a while when it feels right make a fill (just wing it and see what happens). an exercise you can do with ur band is that you can just start a bluesy tune and improvise, just have fun! domokun

Ha, we practice 2 or 3 times a week and all we do is jam and our jams turn into our songs, kinda weird because our songs never sound the same.

My band and I practice twice a week, once to run through our songs, and once to write new material and run through again.

I went to one "testing" band practice, It went pretty horrible and I kind lost interest in a band for awhile. But one of my friends came over and we jammed on his tail gate for a few hours. The harmonica and acoustic bass have some fun prospects.
