There isn't an exact quest system on Gaia. If you're saving up for an item, users call it questing.
As for ways to earn the gold:
Poll Whore
Post a lot
Fish and sell for profits
Gamble -but only if you're lucky- and sell the tickets
Sell art to other members
Make a quest thread and ask for donations
Ask for help from a charity
donate to gaia and sell the letters
And many more ways. ^^
