Im a skinner/leatherworker and Im curently lv 20 but it seems like all the recipes I can make are for items that are too weak for me too use. I have been purchasing recipes at Orgrimmar so far but most of them are not useful. Can someone who has done this before give me some advice on how to use this skill effectively?

First get it to a high level (grind leather, make a lot of items till you're at...200 or something) then start leveling again. Atleast the gear you can then make will be better than what you can find on normal mobs/quests.
Imo, LW is only really worth it at lev.60, for the resistances, or (if youre rogue) Devilsaur stuff. 3nodding

Yah, pretty much your best bet is to grind like heck. Find the things that are the cheapest to make and make a lot of them. Find an area with lots of skinnable mobs and lots of non skinners around and just skin other people's kills. Southrn barrens is good for that. Or just do the entryway to Wailing Caverns. WC is always a great bet 'cause you get the Deviate scales and those sell pretty nice on the AH.
LW does have some nice gear for before level 60.
Shammys get really nice dragonscale stuff. Almost all of Dragonscale's better suited for shammys than hunters.
The nightscape stuff is great for rogues, especially the boots. I wore those boots until I got the level 50 quest reward ones.
Mmm, and if you can get Timbermaw rep they hvae a really nice patern for blue gloves.

Like they said.. Just grind. Make anything that's orange, regardless if you can use it or not, and sell it (AH or vender) and then use the money to buy more thread and keep grinding (if you have the leather).
I bounced around Darn for ages at a time when I was younger in level, bonking rabbits and deer on the head and skinning them. Still do it too.
What's fun is finding a group that doesn't have a skinner in it and then skin everything they kill... you get all the leather with less the risk.
I think it was just over 100 LW skill that I started making stuff I could use for my level, which I remember what was.. I just can't remember what level I was when I hit that skill mark.
But making and vender-ing is how you get your skill up quickly so you can make the better stuff.

Ok thanks for the advice everyone. At what level does it start making sense to sell stuff in the AH? Or buy stuff in the AH for that matter? I still have a lot of empty armor slots. Rings, goggles, hats? currently lv 21.

Goggles are head pieces and with the exception of like two can only be worn by engineers.
Headpieces come in at around level 25.
The level all depends on your server. XD Some have AHs overrun by crafted items, others lack crafted and dropped items. You just gotta see what's on the AH for around that level.

I'm a 20 rogue, S/L as well. What I've found is still embossed leather boots, I'm at 95 LW, and I can sell of a pair for about 8s20c in the AH. It's okay, I do liek selling them and making them.
