I'll start by saying I know nothing about animal nutrition.

My husband talked to a vet med student recently and was informed that cats fed an entirely plant-based diet will die from it. Perhaps there are synthetic forms of these animal-based nutrient essentials - I don't know.

Even though I don't eat meat, I still buy canned cat food for my boys (2 cats). I go back and forth between various fishes, beef, turkey and chicken. Of course I feel bad for the animal, but my boys need to eat meat. I only give them half a can a day though. The rest of the day is dry food made up of plants and vitamins. 3nodding It's very sad.. but in the wild animals do eat each other, and it's healthy for them. Some animals would die if they didn't eat meat. Having a pet takes responsibility, and it's our job to take good care of them and keep them healthy. So if that means feeding my boys meat, then I will. At least I can live without meat. biggrin

P.S. Depriving meat from a carnivore animal is cruelty. Without it they'll get very sick and die. sad

One of the oldest dogs in the world is/was vegetarian so I'd say for whatever reason this is proof they can be vegetarian and healthy.
Cats are another matter.

Both of my cats are fed on a vegan diet. All we do is add a thingy called enzymes pH with every meal of theirs and they could never be better. They don't even puke all over the floor anymore. Its great, and it can be done.

Interesting...How old are the cats, has a vet seen/checked them, are they indoors only?...I ask because outdoors cats will eventually hunt thus obtaining meat on their own.
