The young mare shook her head with a soft chuckle as she wandered through the forest, trying to keep to the shade as she could while seeking the river.
"Enjoy your summer little one.." she said with a soft smirk, a new responded from the fluffy silver feline who sat perched on her rump.
"Soon the cool days will return and we will go home."
This second round of summer has thrown her plans off to return to her mountain home, but she didn't mind having a chance to mingle with others for a bit longer. Not many ventured that high up outside of some rather grumpy characters and well she just didn't have the time to deal with them.
"A swim sound good hmm?" She glanced at her companion with a playful smile.
The pair continued making their way through the forest, the air around them was hot, with little breeze being able to move through the trees, it made the air still and heavy. She hoped that when things opened up by the river that she would feel some relief finally.

Ichtacka had been enjoying the cooler weather, his pelt had even started to grow in it's winter fluff which did make him overheat a little when exerting himself but nothing he couldn't handle, that was until the weather turned again. Hot, sticky, sweaty weather, of course... he struggled now whenever he helped someone from another shifter, the heat and his heavy fur, causing him to fumble at times, but thankfully it always worked out and those he had been trying to save seemed to get away, just from him being a distraction.
Today however, it wasn't only hot, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, which meant very little relief from the blazing sun, in addition to that, it was also fairly humid so Ichtacka had been relieved when he chanced upon a river with a very nice, thick reedbed to provide him some shade as well. He waded into the water and into the middle of the reeds, unfortunately disturbing a late nesting pair of ducks. "Sorry" he muttered as they angrily quacked at him to get away from their nest. His ears flicked as he heard a voice nearby, towards the treeline and he froze, hidden in the reeds as he was, he didn't dare move in case he scared whoever it was coming to cool down.

The sound of the ducks caught the mares attention as she finally made it to the break in the trees leading to the banks of the river, the air itself felt cooler the closer she grew to the waters edge.
A scent caught her attention, her body went from relaxed to alert as her eyes darted around. She made a faint clicking sound and the little kitten moved without a sound, hiding itself in the curls of her mane. The pair had been together since Talvi was a foal, their bond had grown to the point that words weren't always necessary between them.
"I mean no harm to whomever is there.." she called out kindly. She wasn't a fighter but she had held her own a time or two, plenty of those that lived on the mountain were there due to their unfriendly behavior. "Just hoping to find some relief from this awful heat.." her eyes continued to dance around, hoping to find the owner of the scent she had picked up on. "I'm Talvi.." she introduced herself, sometimes that helped others come forward.
Her eyes found him in the reeds, they widened slightly as panic flashes through them.
A shifter.
She looked to where she'd be able to hide Kit, to keep her companion safe just in case. She'd heard rumors of them, even had a run in herself with one and still didn't know how she managed to escape with little damage.

Ichtacka watched as a brightly coloured mare appeared, he didn't move, until he noticed the kitten "I mean no harm either, my gosh your kitten is ADORABLE!" he gushed, standing up, forgetting for a moment, what he was to others. "I'm Ichtacka... Tacka to my friends....if i had any" he said, the last almost under his breath
It was then he noticed her looking around, eyes wide, trying to find somewhere to hide "oh no .... no please, im sorry, i'm not like other shifters, please i don't mean to scare you" he said, his voice sounding extremely sad as he waded out and flopped onto the ground, proving he wasn't hunting her.

Instincts made her take a few steps back as he grew closer, but once he flopped himself onto the ground she couldn't help but release a small giggle.
"Oh my!" She exclaimed as her body relaxed and Kit poked its head out from under her curled mane.
She felt a little embarrassed by her response to him now. "I'm sorry, I haven't had the best encounters with...others. Shifters weren't the only dangers that lurked on the mountain, them kalona or kalona crosses were sometimes worse and crazy as they come.
"It's nice to meet you Tacka, my friends call me Vi. And this is Kit " the silver feline mewed in greeting.
"Seems like we had a very similar idea to cool off from this blasted heat." She softly stomped one of her back hooves with a soft snort. "Kit enjoys a good swim when we come down for the summer."

When the mare relaxed, Ichtacka slowly got up "It's because i have this here gem, apparently the angels make them and help us" he pointed with his other paw, to the gem on his left leg "They give us more of a soul... or something, it was so long ago i can't really remember but i feel horrible about what i did before the gem so i try and help others, like you, from the evil ones, gemmed or not" he frowned "some still like to hurt others, some are just confused ... but i try and help so no one else dies" he blurted it all out to her,
Sheepishly he stopped, looking at the cat and the mare "Can i....pet her?" he asked, fascinated by the small feline, he hadn't seen something so gosh darned cute in a very long time, but his head snapped up at her next comments "yes yes... sorry the reed bed is nice and out of the sun but i think the ducks are glad i got out... but the water is lovely.... the cat.. likes water?" he tilted his head, looking at Kit again, curious, like a little puppy.

At his words of the gem that seem to be embedded into his leg, she eyed it curiously. Listening to him speak of his own transgressions as well as others. She frowns slightly her brows knitted as she shook. Her head was a soft but slightly sad look on her face. " You don't have to carry the burden for whatever you've done or what anyone else has done. Your nature is your nature, that is simply the facts of life. But I'm pleased to have been able to meet you." She gave him a smile and then let out a small laugh at his words.
"Oh I'm sure Kit would be fine with that! They're a sucker for attention.." she said with a laugh and a slight roll of her eyes. "Kit is sometimes less feline and more canine and loves the water. We come down from the upper terrain of the mountainside during the summer so that Kit can indulge."
The small silver feline stretched her little body before jumping down off the mare, she made her way towards the stallion with a soft little mew as she weaved herself between his front paws.

He watched her face as he spoke seeing the sadness on there. "Yes but i remember enjoying the horrible things back then, it just doesn't feel right, i know we have to eat meat but i make sure that what i eat now, are just animals, nothing sentient" he paused, looking at Kit. "I'm glad to meet you too, even gladder you didn't run away or attack me" he smiled, large ears slightly floppy.
The tension and worry lifted from his face immediately when she said he could pet Kit, he lay down, inviting the feline to cuddle instead of weaving. "I've been there, might be nicer up there right now, cooler at least" he said, looking up at her, while one paw petted at the cat's pelt.
He suddenly had a thought, he jumped up, leaping into the air, changing to his canid form, smaller, less intimidating but no less fluffy, and landed in a play bow, booping the cat with his nose before leaping into the water, splashing both the mare and the cat if they were stood close enough.

Talvi gave only a solemn nod at his words. Her tails swished as she watched the pair of them together who would have ever thought to see a shifter and a kitten playing? She would have never taken that bet in all her years but now she definitely would. As for the first time she had met one that wasn't a beast even if it was simply their nature.
"Oh home would be much cooler than here, but as long as it's warm, we stay. Even if only one of us roasts in the heat.." she gave the kitten a look but she didn't mind truly. " We will head home when the weather down here starts to cool. Kit was very pleased with this round of heat, but no one seemed to inform my winter coat." She laughed.
The kittens blue eyes widened at his sudden change, with a squeak of excitement her little frame crouch down, rump wiggling back and forth as the water then splashed over the pair, that was all the kitten needed to suddenly bounce into the water after the coyote, leaping playfully at him.
Talvi laughed, tossing her head back at the splash of water. She was very amused at the sight before her, what a gem of a day..even if the heat was gross.

Tacka laughed for the first time in a long while, the kitten splashing him in coyote form, him splashing the kitten, shifting to full size and splashing the mare, keeping everyone cool but making it fun too. It wasn't often he was this carefree but it had bene a while since he had just.. existed with another person, it was mostly tension filled, saving lives, being attacked for what he was without being listened to, fighting off other shifters. When everyone was well and truly soaked and the sun was starting to dip in the sky he finally flopped out on the ground, on his back, legs in the air awkwardly. "This has been a great day, it was so nice to meet you Talvi, and you Kit" he sighed. "I'm afraid it's back to travelling tomorrow, i was tracking a bad shifter but it just got so hot, i'm pretty sure they wouldn't have hunted anyway" he rolled over onto his side, then into a 'loaf' position, in canine form once more. "Do you need an escort to somewhere safe?" he asked, just wanting to make sure she was safe before he left her to protect someone else.

Talvi couldn't remember the last time she had such a fun day, she was glad they'd stayed longer in the lower lands and that she had met this shifter.
"Thank you Tacka, it's been a fantastic day and been out pleasure to meet and get to know you.."
Kit who was flopped over one of Tacka's tails in pure blissful exhaustion, lifted their head and mewed in agreement before stretching out and wandering back to the mare, who carefully lifted the kitten up and placed them on her rump.
"I think it's time for us to make the trek back up the mountain, I've a safe glen a few hours up." She said with a smile, she was glad to have enjoyed the roasting day but longed for home. "I hope we meet again someday Tacka, be safe." With those words spoken, she turned and started back from where she had appeared, kitten snoring loudly from its perch.
