Phelis Petitioning: Esme
Chopstick Colors: Cherrywood colored sticks topped with beads the green of Esme’s eyes.

Padding softly down the hallway at the back of the Cafe found Esme. Her body language said that she was furious. Her tail was lashing from side to side, even a bit poofy. But if you looked in her eyes, and knew what to look for, she was sad. Her head shifted from side to side checking out each door before she passed it. Her head was full of thoughts, all tumbling around one another into what felt like a maelstrom. Foremost in her thoughts was Calamity, the playful Phox that Esme had met some time ago- thought it now felt like she’d always been there. It was for her sake, at least partially, that had brought Esme here.

Being a Phelis meant she had no magic. That hadn’t bothered Esme, she was perfectly capable all on her own. If the celestial Phox didn’t want to share their blessing, that was afterall, their business. But without the blessing Esme couldn’t have a family, she couldn’t have kits with Cally. So here she was, searching the doors for something she didn’t understand, didn’t have.

Stopping suddenly mid-step, Esme froze- except for the slight twitching of her tail. The door ahead on the left was wooden, made of strong planks that had been sanded smooth and stained a cherry color. It made Esme think of the red and yellow colors of Cally’s eyes combined. Someone had taken time making this door. The craftsmanship and care were clear. And inside Esme’s stomach….or a place inside that made her think of her stomach… was this itty bitty kernel of a *something*. Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly she pushed the door open and walked through.

Finding herself in some odd kind of woods with strange trees on either side of a path she scented the air. Not able to name the smell there was something comforting about it. Her paws were squarely on a little pathway that lead off in between the trees. Feeling strange in a way that almost made her fur want to stand up Esme followed the trail. Eventually she came to a clearing in the trees and the end of the path. Not hesitating she went to the center of the open space and sat. She composed herself, cleaning a paw before wrapping her tail about her legs and tilting her face upwards.

Her thoughts and feels had indeed formed a massive storm inside her. Esme closed her eyes as images flashed through her mind. Cally laughing, Esme watching some young ones tumble about the cafe, the way the humans looked at them, the feeling she had watching other couples together, her fierceness that she could stand on her own, that face Calamity made when saying she was an “evvvvvilllll witch”- and the way it made Esme feel, the sight of their paws beside one another, how it seemed strange to remember a time before she’d come to the shop, a time before she knew her girlfriend. Things began to crystalize in her mind. She could stand on her own, but she didn’t have to. She had a choice. She didn’t have to roam around, she had a choice. She didn’t need the blessing, but she wanted it. And she had a choice.

Focusing on pulling all these emotions, images and her choice around her like a blanket she spoke.

“I ask for the blessing of the Celestial.” She heard herself capitalize the “c”. “I would like to have a family- with Calamity, and a place to call home. This is my choice.” Her words triggered a thought, and as if by magic she knew what she’d seen in the door that lead her here. It was love, and it was home.
