The encounter with Khalima has left him a bit off center, he had to focus on his way out of the Jungle of Secrets. Sniffing he halted his step and gave a soft growl for Zarie to stop and get low. She did as he bade her to.
Gazing ahead of them, he focuses all his senses. Something was near, to near. He knew it was not Khalima as she was behind them and he knew her scent. Whatever this was it was not friendly in the slightest. Crouching he tilted his head to the side to listen more intently. A sudden soft rustling noise came from his left to close for his comfort. He instantly turned his body in front of Zarie and roared. A noise of dirt being loosened, leaves being rustled and something moving very fast was carried on the breeze to him. His first thought was to give chase and eliminate the threat, but as he now had Zarie to care for he held firm. He wouldn't leave her. He couldn't.
He turned to gaze down at her and saw she was trembling and that just about tore his heart in two.

Just a few moments ago she was happily prancing next to her daddy and the next thing she knew she was crouched on the ground, paws across her eyes scared.
She had been lost in her own world, imaging her new life. As an orphaned cub she never thought she would get a new family to love and accept her as their own. She had gazed up at the strong and fast lion that braved the Jungle of Secrets and Khalima herself to adopt her. She felt safe with him, she knew he would protect her at all costs including dying if need to for her.
She had been asking questions, happily walking next to him. She hadn't been paying attention to where they were going, her daddy was walking at a reasonable pace and she just went along with it. He didn't seem to be in a rush and that was fine with her. She enjoyed the jungle, the smells and the lush plant life. She could hide anywhere and be alone.
She just asked a question about her new mommy when he suddenly gave her a soft growl and then was in front of her shielding her from something she couldn't see. A loud roar, so very loud echoed in her ears and she whimpered. Crouching on the hard wet ground, she put her paws over her eyes and waited.
Silence seemed to go on forever, she still waited. She couldn't move not that she dared to. A few more moments passed and her daddy told her it was perfectly safe for her to uncover her eyes and stand up. She slowly did as she was told. Blinking a few times she looked around and saw nothing except some leaves that had been bent and destroyed. She looked up at her daddy and asked "What was it daddy? Is it safe to keep going or should we find somewhere to rest?" she plopped her butt on the ground out of habit and waited for his answer.
