ωith: Aleithia︱ ωhere: Hallway- Outside Aleithia's Room︱ мood: Anxious︱ σutfit: X "Talking." 'Thoughts.' It had been a few days since history class, and Nadia still hadn’t managed to get her best friend to tell her how the events had transpired for her. She knew that she and Amena had their own struggle being stuck inside a building and left to die by fire, but there was a side of Nadia that hoped Alei had found some brave knight to protect her, especially considering she had been unable to. It was often that Nadia found herself blaming men for some inconvenience, but she wasn’t there for her person, and there was nothing she could do to change that.
It didn’t stop her from trying, though. Each night, she came by for sleepovers and held the girl in her arms, but Nadia couldn’t find the strength to ask her what the matter was. Something had happened in that simulation, scarring her, and Nadia had been left in the lurch, trying to play detective to try and uncover what had happened. The worst thing she could have imagined was that the purple-haired girl had been left to her lonesome the whole time, but based on her uncle's teachings, she doubted that was the case unless he was trying to make some point to the both of them.
Alei kept pretending things were okay, but Nadia knew the reality; she had seen it each night. Holding her each night before the two fell asleep, Nadia could tell something was eating at Alei. The hardest part was that Nadia didn’t have the strength to pressure the soft-spoken girl. Who was Nadia to judge if she wanted to keep it a secret? After all, their whole relationship was a secret from everyone else. They were both living a lie; was it only a matter of time before they started lying to each other? Nadia wanted to disagree, but she knew that Aleithia was keeping something from her.
Tonight, however, was the night. At least that’s what Nadia told herself to have enough courage to go to Aleithia’s room again. Stuffed animal in hand, Nadia knew she was as prepared as she could be for the princess. Her request for the stuffed bear was a strange one given she had never had any stuffed animals growing up, but thankfully, her servants knew better than to question it. It wasn’t for her anyway; none of this was about Nadia, it was about Alei. She just hoped the gesture wasn’t seen as silly or childish. Normally, Nadia was seen as mature for her age, but it was nice to be able to smile and play every once in a while. Aleithia had been helping with that before this mess.
Taking a deep breath, Nadia knocked on the girl’s door. Nerves weren't the right word for what she was feeling; after all, the hallways were silent this time of night. She hadn’t been there for Aleithia when it mattered, but she wanted to be there now. She wanted to show she was willing to carry the girl’s burdens, anything to see the shy girl’s smile again, hear her laugh, the real one, not the one she put on to make people feel more comfortable. The door creaked open, and Nadia greeted Alei, " Hey, you. I brought you something." Nadia offered her the bear, her hand slightly shaking, " I thought Poppy* could use some company." A soft smile on Nadia’s face grew as she waited for the girl to respond and welcome her inside.

The last few days had been... a lot. Between the shock and horror of history class, to learning Elara was here, to her garden conversation with Stephanie? It was starting to feel like almost too much. Worse still, she and Nadia hadn't had a conversation about it yet.
It was a looming elephant. A tropical storm on path to hit their shores. One that they would have to confront as it inched closer and closer every day. For the most part, Nadia had stayed quiet. No questions. Just warm hands and hugs at night during their sleepovers. Something that Aleithia would never have enough words to express how much she appreciated it. Nor would she ever be able to express how much it was exactly what she needed.
Yet when she opened the door to Nadia's knock this evening, the set of her face told Alei it was finally time. The pink-haired woman had been so patient with her, despite the worry that so clearly bubbled beneath the surface. It was time. This was a bandage that needed to be peeled off. Setting her jaw, Aleithia determined that tonight she would tell Dia everything.
The stuffed bear, however, was unexpected.
It was just like the princess. So thoughtful, wanting to do anything she could to soothe Alei's poor mood the last few days. She shake in Dia's hand as she offered the bear creased Alei's brow. Her hands settled over the bear, taking care to make sure that they also wrapped around Dia's. "I think Poppy will appreciate the company." With a gentle tug Alei was guiding her lady love into her room. Closing the door behind them was an afterthought. One that she performed with one hand and without looking.
Dia needed all of her attention now.
She had done this. The anxious energy seemed to roll off of Nadia in waves. All Aleithia wanted to do was soothe her. Keeping one hand on the stuffed bear, the other drifted up to the other woman's cheek. Then she pressed up onto her toes to offer a gentle kiss to Dia's lips. "Thank you." The words were whispered into Dia's mouth as Alei pressed a second kiss to her lips.
Settling back down, the brunette found herself curling into Dia's arms. "We have to talk about it, don't we?" Part of her didn't want to. Like the rest of her life, if she just stuffed it down enough it would go away wouldn't it?
No. Not with the way Dia looked at her. There was no getting out of this conversation.

ωith: Aleithia︱ ωhere: Aleithia's Room︱ мood: Anxious︱ σutfit: X "Talking." 'Thoughts.'
At least her gift had been enough of a hit for her to get immediate access to her room. Aleithia’s room had become a sense of calm for her now, being alone was too terrifying. Especially when she could instead be in the arms of her girl, thankfully she seemed to feel the same way as she greeted her with a kiss as soon as the door closed. It was hard to tell who was shaking at the thought of them being together once again but Nadia tried to just melt into the moment.
" My pleasure," She smirked in response, there was still much the two didn’t know about one another but being together was so new Nadia was scared to try and push things. There were rules against revealing their heritage and status but over time Nadia was able to piece some of it together. Like her ability to read minds which came in handy so she could send mental messages to her throughout the day without consequence, Aleithia was so good at screening them that when she tried to send them the purple-haired princess wouldn’t even react most times outside a smile once and awhile.
Soon, Aleithia was back in Nadia’s arms much to her enjoyment, but this just meant it was time for them to get serious. Something the Thah princess wasn’t sure she was ready for but knew it was time. Like clockwork, the girl read her mind once again and understood the motives for Nadia being her, causing her to nod in response, " I think it’s best if we do." She sighed rubbing the girl’s back softly preparing for whatever she had to say next.
Figuring out what to say, Nadia looked down at her girlfriend’s crestfallen face. ' Maybe it’s best if I say nothing,' Her anxiety started getting the better of her thinking about how she had already upset her by the thought of it. But if something happened, they had to talk about it, their relationship had been surface level to this point they had to become real eventually. There was no escaping it.
Moving her hands to Aleithia's face so she could see her, " What happened in there?" There it was. Nadia had done it. She had opened the door, busted it open actually. There was no beating around the bush tonight. Her experience had been terrifying but at the end of the day, she knew it was just a dream, nothing to focus too heavily on. But Alei, something had scarred her in there. If someone had tormented or harmed her, Nadia would never forgive herself.

A breath shivered out of her. Nadia had finally asked the one question that she had been dreading having to answer. One that must be answered at that. Swallowing hard, Aleithia could do little more in the moment than look for the words needed to explain everything.
The last two months had felt like a dream. A shimmering, lovely dream. If she didn't think too hard about it, Aleithia could almost forget that she was so very different from every single one of her peers. The blossoming relationship she was sharing with Nadia was soft. Delicate. A welcome reprieve from the realities that the princess knew would eventually come shattering down around her.
A marriage to a man to forge an alliance.
Her lack of powers.
How terrifying the one thing she thought she wanted actually was.
None of it mattered in these stolen moments with the girl who had made her heart stutter during that first dance class. Dia's arms were a shield around her, protecting her from everything beyond. One that Aleithia had been taking advantage of for the last few nights.
Suddenly, her lips felt dry. Pulling ever so slowly out of her love's arms, Aleithia pulled the bear to her chest as if bracing for what she knew she needed to do. It felt like a giant was sitting on her chest. Every beat of her heart was slamming against her ribs.
"Dia I -" Her voice cut off. Wide, panicked eyes met Nadia's for just a moment. Then they began to water. Quickly, Aleithia spun in place and took a few steps towards her bed. Maybe this would be easier if she just didn't have to look at the way her girlfriend's lovely face would twist in disgust. "Th - This will make, uh, more, ah, sense i-if I - If I..." Her voice stuttered out, her heart thumping painfully in her throat as she attempted to spit out her confession.
"I - I couldn't co-control my... myself in there... b-because I've -" An uncomfortably long pause sat in her throat for just a moment before she was able to force the last part out. "I've never... had powers."

ωith: Aleithia︱ ωhere: Aleithia's Room︱ мood: Anxious︱ σutfit: X "Talking." 'Thoughts.' The girl’s stutters weren’t out of the norm for their conversation, remembering their first meeting, it felt like nerves, but now Nadia knew better. A curse of tongues, trouble speaking, something the princess herself had never witnessed before coming here, but had heard tales of. There wasn’t a cure from the pink-braided girl’s understanding, and as a courtesy, she felt it best not to bring it up to her. After all, it was a part of what made the long-haired brunette- well, her. Something that normally brought a smile to Nadia’s face, but not now.
The panic, combined with tears, was enough to trigger Nadia’s protective nature. The fact that it was the girl’s questioning that caused this pained her. She imagined her cloak was enough to shield Aleithia from the negativity of anything else impacting her ability to disclose her worries to her. " Alei, it’s just me. Remember?" She whispered close to the girl’s ear as Aleithia was still trying to form a reply.
The two of them against the world, wasn’t it?
It was easier to think that way. Childish but simpler. Her grip around the girl deepened as she feared this was the conversation she had been dreading since they had started their relationship. It was only seconds for her to respond, but it felt like decades for the Thah woman. Fears that the reality of it had come to the mind reader and that her thoughts now were just a burden on the girl, ' Could it be possible that is what is taking so long for her to respond?' Nadia’s worries started spiraling as she attempted to cleanse her thoughts from negativity to allow the poor girl to speak.
"I've never... had powers."
That wasn’t what she was expecting. Had Nadia heard wrong? Having no powers wasn’t impossible, but her being royal and having none was cause for alarm. Unheard of even. " But, the night of the explosion. You and your brother, how?" Nadia was sure they were communicating telepathically somehow, given how quick Aleithia was to leave her room that night. She had assumed it was because of the girl, but had it actually been Stephanie all along? How embarrassing! Nadia just hoped the brother hadn’t been probing her mind as of late. Nadia had been rather careless with her thoughts.
Nadia was flying blind, unsure of what to do next to provide the girl any comfort. Sure, she had hidden one of her powers for the majority of her existence, but that was under the advice of her parents, who loved and supported her. Based on the reaction she was getting from Aleithia now, her family dynamics were far messier than hers. She wanted to support her, but how? Loosening her grip slightly, Nadia looked down at Aleithia’s still beautiful, now tear-filled face.
" Powers or not, did you think that would change my feelings for you?" Her tone was playful, hopeful the response wasn’t yes. The idea that her girlfriend would think so little of her was terrifying, but understandable given the assumptions she had made about her past so far. Maybe this was a wake-up call for them to finally be real with each other, dig deeper beneath the surface than just sharing tea, snuggles, and holding hands.

Somehow Nadia didn’t seem to be mad at her. If anything, she was just curious now. And who could blame her? Aleithia was well aware that it was not common for royalty not to have powers. Or, if they didn’t, maybe there were more cases like hers where the fact that an heir was missing powers was being hidden. Shoved down so deep, so far, that none questioned whether or not the offending party had powers because why wouldn’t they? Everyone had powers.
Worrying her lip, Alei let her eyes trail up to meet Nadia’s once more. All she could offer was a small shake of her head. But this needed more than that, didn’t it? If she were in Dia’s shoes she knew she would want more. It was that thought that pushed her forward.
”N-no, that was all… All Stephanie. I don’t really know how it works exactly, but he can see into your mind and push his thoughts there. All I have to do is think what I want him to hear when I know he’s there.”
For a moment she hesitated. Now she also knew that was how he saw. Using the thoughts of people around him to navigate around the room as their thoughts slipped from this and that. As much as she loved Dia, that seemed too personal to share. No, that was not her truth to offer.
She could nearly hear the next thoughts she would assume Dia would have. As such, she jumped to make sure that any fears the other woman had would be put to bed. ”Over the years I’ve learned how to keep some things private. And I know he doesn’t like looking too deeply into the minds of the people around him. If you keep one thought on the surface really hard, that’s all he will see. It’s also useful, like you saw, for long distance communication.”
Aleithia was babbling. She could hear herself doing it, cringing internally all the while. Was she being annoying? It felt like it. Especially when the next question she needed to answer was so much harder. The hope was written across Dia’s face. Hope for an answer the brunette could not give.
Her eyes dropped to the floor. One of her hands reached out, tentatively as if she expected for the woman to pull away once her answer was between them. Still, it did not stop her fingers from tracing a soft line over the back of Nadia’s hand. ”I- I did not, um, consider it out of the realm of possibility.” Her voice grew quieter as her fingers threaded through Dia’s, seeking both comfort and to provide comfort. ”I had, well, hoped that it would not be, of course, but… It would not, ah, be the first time.”

ωith: Aleithia︱ ωhere: Aleithia's Room︱ мood: Ashamed︱ σutfit: X "Talking." 'Thoughts.' The shallow nod of disagreement was enough to spark discourse in Nadia’s body. Who had she been attempting to communicate with all this time? Her brother? This was devastating. The pink-braided girl was sure she would never recover from this punch to the gut, but she couldn’t let her insecurity show, not when the one she cared so deeply about felt this terrible. Betrayal wasn’t the right word for it, but the idea of Stephanie potentially being there for their first kiss and more of their moments without her knowledge was enough for her to feel violated.
" I still don’t understand." These were the only words Nadia could muster out as she feared what else she might say. Just how much did her brother know about them, did he care, did Aleithia care? The idea of their relationship was enough for them to get stoned in some areas, and to think she had been so casual about the subject was terrifying. She didn’t care much for Stephanie, but now she was indebted to him because of what he potentially knew.
The more the girl in her arms explained it, the more Nadia’s fears manifested. ' She’s learned to control her thoughts, but what about me?' Her worries were not just for her sake but her Alei’s if her brother knew about their relationship, she doubted he would be accepting of the two of them. Given how young they were, he would just account for them as being childish or foolish, but could she assure that? Nadia barely knew him outside of him being her girlfriend’s brother.
Lifeless, Nadia nodded along to the girl’s speech. Not even able to be happy that her condition had ceased for the time being, only dreading what remained of this conversation. At the end of it all, she was still hopeful. Hopeful they could make it out of this conversation together, alive and well. But given what she knew now, Nadia couldn’t guarantee that.
Aleithia’s hand seeking hers grounded Nadia for a moment, remembering why she was here after all. She was supposed to be supporting her. It didn’t pay for her to be so focused on the what-ifs of it all. Nadia needed to know more about what happened to the girl she adored when Nadia was unable to protect her from the dangers of the world. As her fingers entwined with the girl’s, Nadia finally spoke up, " In the dream, I didn’t have my normal powers. I couldn’t speak to any animals."
It felt good to talk about it. Her uncle had told her that it was important for them to experience this, but Nadia wished she could have warned Aleithia somehow. Even if she didn’t know where they were going, the ability was still shocking when first experienced. " I was with my sister, and she couldn’t use her abilities either. All we could do was run." Squeezing the girl's hand, Nadia was ashamed to admit it; despite having minimal fighting experience, she didn’t want the brunette to view her any differently.

An overwhelming mixture of emotion crept over Aleithia as Nadia explained her experience in the dream. Not only that. But mentioned her power. Her sister’s power. There was so much sadness. So much fear in her heart at the new firsthand knowledge of just how terrifying experiencing war could be. That Dia had also had to go through it in such a horrifying way. But under all of that, a guilty sense of warmth. Of pride. Knowing that she, little Aleithia, was worthy of being trusted with something so personal. Especially when she considered where they were.
There was so much she could say. So much she needed to say. But where were the right words? Words had never been Alei’s specialty.
The squeeze to her hand brought her out of her head. They had both seemed to be in their own little worlds. Whether it was the dream’s doing or this newfound shared secret of powers - or, more accurately, Aleithia’s lack thereof - something had ripped them out of reality for just a moment. And now they were pulling each other back. Two ships moored together to weather a storm.
A cold bead of sweat dripped down Alei’s back. She could almost feel Dia’s response to her own experience in the dream. Would it be kinder to lie? To tell the sweet woman before her that she’d managed to hide and miss the worst of everything? Maybe. The problem was that she couldn't do it. Not when Dia was looking at her like everything could fall apart if they weren’t entirely honest with each other.
Gentle hands pulled Dia forward. Further into the room. Further into her. ”Sit with me.” The words felt breathless and small in comparison with the confession she’d just been given. Yet she continued to guide the other girl to her bed.
For just a moment her hand dropped Nadia’s, abandoned in the effort it took to climb into bed and place the new bear next to Poppy. But then it was back, threading their fingers together as Alei’s free hand smoothed over the spot next to her. ”It will be easier this way, I , um, think.” Whatever confidence she’d had was quickly waning, her voice growing smaller with each word.
”I’m… sorry. I can’t imagine.” Would she have felt better with Stephanie there? Would he have been worse off with her there, unable to even see while she screamed in protest to the man who had attempted to take her? The idea hollowed out her stomach uncomfortably. ”No one, um, no one hurt you, right?”
The hot pinprick of tears stung the corners of her eyes. She could only imagine how much more of a nuisance she would have been for Nadia if they had been together. Would their relationship have ended if she’d seen the dripping mess Aleithia had become with powers for the first time? Would Nadia have had to watch her be taken away?
”I was, ah, with a - with a student I hadn’t, um, met before.” Her hand stayed in Nadia’s, even as she pulled her knees into her chest as if curling into a ball could protect her from the past. Her glassy eyes stayed focused on the wall instead of trying to admit what happened while watching Dia’s expression grow what she could only imagine would be more horrified. ”I couldn’t… Couldn’t stop the, um, poison. It just, ah, kept flowing out of me - out of me and destroying everything I… touched. Then-“ There was a small hiccup that escaped her, forcing the tears out of her eyes that she’d been doing so well to keep in. ”Then a man tried - tried to take me.”

ωith: Aleithia︱ ωhere: Aleithia's Room︱ мood: Ashamed︱ σutfit: X "Talking." 'Thoughts.' Easier to assume rejection, Nadia was prepared to leave when Aleithia pulled her onto the bed, asking her to stay. Given her weakness, Nadia was sure that Aleithia would no longer wish to spend these nights together sneaking kisses and looks and snuggling close to one another. Sitting on the bed, a wave of relaxation started to come over her. Would it be easier to move away from this tough conversation and just live in fantasy a little while longer? It was fair for her to ask that when the girl had finally been brave enough to open the door, but she couldn’t help the insecure thoughts from appearing.
Looking at the two stuffed animals side by side gave Nadia some comfort that her gesture was heard, at the very least. Followed by the fact that she wasn’t kicked out yet, not that Aleithia would ever do such a thing. The girl’s kindness and compassion were something the princess aspired to, although she wished it didn’t extend to everyone, thinking back to their first meeting. Thankfully, that prince hadn’t made another appearance since then, which was something that Aleithia didn’t have to worry too heavily about.
The girl’s question was innocent, but Nadia winced, thinking back on her and her sister in the cabin together. The smoke felt so real as it filled her lungs, despite her knowing deep down it was just an illusion. She couldn’t protect her sister, and her sister could barely fight back, and she had been in the war. What chance did Nadia have at keeping Alei safe? And what were the odds that Aleithia had been harmed herself? Nadia wasn’t sure if she wanted to know the answer. " We were stuck in a burning building before the illusion stopped. We were trapped and couldn’t get out. There wasn’t anything we could do besides scream for help." Shaking at the thought, she looked at the brunette for a break from the conversation.
Offering a gentle squeeze, Nadia listened as the purple-eyed girl shared her trials in the class. Through her hand, she could feel Aleithia’s heartbeat faster and faster as she spoke. It pained Nadia to see the girl she adored in such pain, telling the story, wishing they could return to the way things were before, but knowing that was no longer an option. As the story came to an end, Nadia feared the worst. A man had taken her? Nadia hoped the illusion had ended before anything else had happened, but knew that was unlikely given the severity of her reaction. Keeping her voice low to not spook her any further, Nadia spoke, " He took you? I’m so sorry that must have been terrifying."
It was hard to focus on what mattered most, as all of it was a punch to the gut for Nadia. Given that she had just learned moments ago that Aleithia had no powers, having some must have been a shock to the girl. When Nadia first got her powers, it was something to be celebrated before it was quickly hidden away for her safety. Her plant manipulation was essential for keeping Thah’s contributions to the war effort going and keeping their alliances. " And the powers, that must have been quite the shock as well." Nadia wasn’t sure what else to say as she saw the girl start to hide away.
Letting go of the girl’s hand, she used both of her hands to uncover the girl’s face to look at her. " Please don’t hide from me. I want to be there for you. I’m sorry I couldn’t be in there." Her face saddened by the last line as she looked to make sure it was going to be okay for them after all. Nadia would be the best knight she could, despite the odds. " I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you. I couldn’t protect myself."

Listening to Nadia recount the story of what had happened to her in the dream was hard. Every fiber of her being wanted Nadia safe. Unfortunately, there was nothing Aleithia could do to shield her or heal her afterwards. The very thought stung, needling under her skin like the realization she had so little to offer did every time she thought about it. It didn't get better knowing she could feel the tremor of the other girl through their linked hands. Nor did it help as she explained everything that had happened to her in the dream.
At first when she felt the fingers slip from her grasp she had thought everything was over. These precious nights that she cherished would no longer be able to happen. That they would resort back to being just friends and nothing more. Nadia's hands uncovering her face from where she had buried them in her own had Aleithia's eyes wide. Partly because the other woman hadn't left. But the remark was also a revelation. Was she just hiding? It would make sense. That was all she was ever good for.
Twisting her wrists to pull them free, her arms surged forward to wrap around Nadia. An action that had the effect of knocking them both back into the bed. "Dia." Her voice was a breath against Nadia's neck as her arms did their best impression of trying to squeeze the life of her love's body. She was holding Nadia so tightly that her arms shook with the effort. A hiccup erupted out of her, making Alei laugh into the braids she'd trapped against her face to tickle her nose. "I'm so - I'm not - h-hiding. And your - your experiences in the dre-dream."
A deep breath filled her nose with floral scents, making Alei bury it deeper in her neck. Deep enough that her next words were both calmer and muffled. "I'm sorry too. You - that sounds terrifying." Greedily stealing one last nuzzle, she pulled back and wiped the remnants of whatever tears had attempted to leak out onto her wrist. "I wish I could protect you. I want to be strong for you too." It wasn't fair that Nadia always felt the need to be her protector, like a burden she needed to bear. Alei wanted to shoulder some of it too. A thought that had her searching Nadia's face.
Suddenly she felt aware of the position they were in, where she was hovering over Nadia. And what a sight it was to behold. Aleithia was struck with the realization of just how right she'd been all those weeks ago when they'd danced together. Some unnamed emotion surged within her chest, something between affection and appreciation. Slowly her fingers skimmed over Nadia's cheekbone, in a strange sort of reverence. For once she was able to make direct eye contact without feeling uncomfortable or strange. "I love you."

heart ωith: Aleithia︱ ωhere: Aleithia's Room︱ мood: Over the Moon︱ σutfit: X "Talking." 'Thoughts.' Her face uncovered, Nadia let out a relieved sigh. The laughter was unexpected given the uncomfortable topics of their conversation, but Nadia tried not to overthink it. Easier said than done, but the princess was doing her best to stay strong for Aleithia. Everything was easier when she was around, after all, even though tensions were tough right now, Nadia felt lighter than she did before seeing Aleithia. There was little she wouldn’t do to keep their world to themselves awhile longer.
Aleithia’s confession of wishing to be strong for Nadia was unprecedented. Nadia wasn’t the fragile one, but maybe Aleithia wasn’t either. The Thah Princess needed to stop seeing her as a small bird needing aid and let her grow and spread her wings. She had talked about Stephanie being overbearing, but Nadia still feared she was doing the same. " You’re already strong." Nadia whispered, " I admire your strength every day." There was no lie there; the girl had impressed her time and time again with her resilience and abilities.
Looking at the hand that had been placed against her cheek, Nadia realized what true strength was. It lay in three words, they had been at the tip of her tongue for some time, and she wasn’t strong enough to say it. The thought of saying it scared her, afraid she didn’t feel the same way. Or worse, Aleithia wasn’t ready for their relationship to be real. If she thought they were just having fun, and once Nadia said it, they couldn’t even be friends anymore. The thought was too much to bear.
"I love you."
A smile formed on the woman’s face, thrilled by those three words. She fell into the girl’s face, planting a quick kiss on the girl’s lips. " I love you too." It was four words, but Nadia finally said it. The words that had pressed at the back of her throat felt like forever. " There you go being the strong one again." She beamed as she could still feel the girl’s breath on her face, letting a small laugh escape with it.
