tab Florence had been struggling lately. Not that she hadn't been struggling the entire time. She was trying to remember so many things all at once. Be poised and refined. Don't be rude to people. Respect those who earn it but always be a good representative from Winduria. Those and more were bouncing around in her head and because of that she had messed up big-time in one of her classes. The professor had been kind to her about it, but she could hear the disappointment in her tone even as she tried hard not to sink into the ground. She hated having the attention drawn to herself especially as she had felt so out of place before that incident. Now everyone knew that she didn't know what she was doing. There was one good thing that came out of it, a kind man had offered to help her with her tougher subjects. In particular manners and etiquette.
tab Ryo had been more than helpful. She could ask him quick tips, questions that were bothering her and she never felt judged by him in the process. As she began to solidify some of the things he had signed a room up for them and had some tea brought in. She wasn't sure exactly how she was expected to act but this was a new lesson for her. She was sitting in her chair, her hands twitching softly out of anxiety as she looked down at the expensive tea set. She had seen quite a few of these in Lord Quincy's house, and neither she nor her mother had dared lay a hand on them. She did think they were cute, but she also didn't know what she would do with them or how to maintain such a thing. She had never had belongings before this aside from her own person and even then, that was questioned sometimes. ' Just ask him Flora! He's offered to help and you need it.' she scolded herself before she pulled her eyes away from the tea set in front of her. " Um, Lord Ryo..." she began, her mouth suddenly very dry. " I apologize, but I don't know the first thing about something like this. There are some in the new house but..." she trailed off, her nerves showing only when she was alone with him.
tab Prince Syena was confident enough for them both, so she didn't have to worry about things with his dance lessons, but Ryo seemed a bit more empathetic to her cause even if her prince was one of the ones who helped her quite a bit since her arrival to the school. She had managed to stay out of harms way even when their was an explosion but she watched things going down in the main hall, now realizing that some of the behavior she saw was not normal for them. She chewed her lip before she hesitantly reached her hand out, brushing against the fancy design on the side of the cups. " I'm almost afraid to break them." she admitted, her green eyes raising to her companion and teacher, hoping he could at the very least shed some light on the fact that it wasn't stronger than she thought. "Ryo" "Bubby" After his laborious endeavors of trying to be a better person after the night of the explosion, an opportunity finally appeared. A girl in his class had been struggling with their etiquette class and it gave Ryo the chance to be the person able to help. He struggled through the first few interactions but with each lesson talking to Lady Florence got easier. He knew little of her background before this but knew it was safe to assume she was new to the royalty scene.
Today’s lesson was something the man was rather excited about having one of his servants deliver one of his favorite sets back from his home in Siscia. It would be a test not only for Florence but for himself as well for if the woman broke one of the cups, which given their past few exchanges, it seemed rather likely, Ryo had a chance to control his emotion and not overreact. He still hadn’t forgotten what he had done to one of Princess Menodora’s creatures and was just grateful it wasn’t another human being.
The way she looked at one of the cups that was adorned with lavender plants, he could tell this was something she had little experience with, but it was no matter. He was no monster. Or at least he was trying not to be. He could teach her about the finer things. It wasn’t fair that such lovely things as tea were kept to the upper class. "Lady Florence, do not fear breaking these cups, they are from my personal collection so breaking them won’t result in any penalty from the school," he gave a quick sigh as he prepared for something he cared so deeply for to soon be ruined but knew the experience would be therapeutic for him.
Holding one of the cups up for her to see he pointed at the crack that was holding the handle to the cup, " This is from when one of my siblings thought it was best to hold a tea party for their stuffed animals." His face scrunched at the thought, originally upset but able to quickly recover. As upset at the incident originally made him not talk to Briar and Clint for a week after the incident, he was able to recover, and he could now. It was the past and today was about the present.
The only issue that remained was that talking was so laborious, he was doing better at leaving his companion behind and trying to fend for himself, but he misjudged how much speaking a whole lesson would be. Ryo placed the broken cup back down and gestured for the servant to serve the two of them, " Thank you Sir Elias," Ryo nodded and waited for the man to leave, before grabbing one of the glasses and gesturing for the girl to do the same with hers. He was curious to see how she would respond to his lack of instructions, but he wanted to see what she knew first before teaching her. If there were roots at least there was a start of something positive blossoming.

tab Florence hadn't been too sure about accepting the offered help but she'd previously been working with the prince so she couldn't see the harm in another set of hands helping her. She had found herself enjoying Ryo's company, even if he had that creepy puppet with him the first few times. She hadn't known what to make it, but she knew better than to judge those around her, especially with her background and upbringing. She honestly had no idea what she was doing, and who was she to insult someone willing to help her? She had gotten into arguments with the thing though, it seemed to like to push buttons and hers were obvious and easy to press and hold down. She still felt guilty from the time she had actively tried to hit him, but she still hadn't apologized to the puppet, despite wanting to. It just felt...odd. So she had to admit she was appreciative of it just being Ryo this time, that way the other couldn't break her focus.
tab Green eyes flicked back to the cups in front of her before over to the one he held up and explained how the crack formed in it. She wrinkled her nose slightly out of reflex before shaking her head. " A tea party?" she got the general idea of it, but she never actually had the chance to experience such innocent childhood things herself. She didn't even have siblings she had wanted to protect. It had always been her and her parents. And now? Just her mother. She had made sure to bury her father somewhere warm and safe where they could visit him without worry, but also so that the others who cared about him could as well. ' Focus. Don't get distracted.' she told herself before she paid attention to the man he called 'Sir Elias' as he poured out the tea. It was a hot drink, the idea of that alone made her interested, the fact that she didn't have to fight to keep her food to herself anymore still something she was working through.
tab She watched how Ryo picked up his cup before she looked down in front of her. She blinked a couple of times, the semi-translucent look of the tea making it so she could still see the lavenders design underneath it. " I will do my best to not break it...regardless." she felt that in itself was fair, it wasn't hers, and she would hate for someone to break her things even if it was an accident. She took a breath in before one more glance to Ryo to study how he held the cup. She looped her fingers through the handle and before she even raised it up, she felt the extremely hot material causing her to pull her hand back. She narrowed her eyes in focus, once more looking over to Ryo, her mind working on overdrive for even the smallest things. " Okay, let's try that again." she murmured, looping her fingers through the outside of the cups handle, lifting it up and trying hard to not let her hand tremble. She could take down grown men, but this freaked her out. Even with a look of pure concentration, she hoped she was doing alright, before she took a sip of the hot drink, unsure of what to think of it. "Ryo" "Bubby" It was almost endearing how much Florence was attempting to be a lady for him. Until he thought about why she was trying so hard. The same reason they were all trying so hard; to belong. If it wasn’t for Ryo’s high standing, he knew that he would have been ousted before arrival for his use of his powers when it came to Bubby. Bubby was still a crutch Ryo was avoiding having to socialize with others and Ryo understood that if he wanted to move forward, he would have to start using his own words.
Using his words was difficult, though, considering his powers. If he wasn’t careful, he could accidentally influence Lady Florence’s whole spirit to feel a certain way. It was easier for him to just lower the states and pretend not to care. And for the most part, he didn’t. Teaching Florence was just to help better his social skills and manage his emotions, but Florence was proving more capable than he had originally imagined. She was an ideal student, mindful and cautious, a pleasure to work with.
Watching the girl take her first sip, a few thoughts came to mind. The first was that she didn't wait for it to cool. That had to have burned just a little, but looking at her face, it was impossible for Ryo to tell if she was in any pain. He had heard from his council that there was a duchess who was immune to certain types of pain, but this was maddening. Tea was supposed to be something calming and comforting, not some sport.
"Again, it’s okay to take your time and wait for the tea to cool,". His voice was calm as he brought his cup to his mouth. He hoped the girl hadn’t burned her mouth just now, the steam was enough to warn him that the tea needed a minute or two. Raising his glass again, he blew the tea. The aroma from the steam was enough to give him a small sense of calm as he waited to see if the girl had severely burned her mouth and would spit the liquid out.
It wasn’t like he was a drill sergeant, or so he hoped. If it was truly hot she would have to spit it out over swallowing it. Still, his insecurity started to manifest over the thought that he had accidentally pushed her too hard, " You can spit it out if it’s too hot. Tea is meant to be enjoyed, not forced." He forced out a chuckle at the thought of someone chugging tea in an attempt to impress him, of all people. " I like to think about what the flavors are as I drink it. The next time, blow first and then take a sip and see if that changes your experience. I am curious about your thoughts."

Florence didn't need to have someone tell her that she didn't know what she was doing. That much she knew just as well. So, when he only spoke about one transgression instead of everything before that she was surprised but she tried not to show it. The tea was hot but not so much so that she had burned herself. She swallowed before glancing over to him again and lowering her hand slightly. " Ah, yeah you did say that before...sorry." she knew he'd said it, but she couldn't help that nagging voice in the back of her head that she was going to break something. The china in her hand felt so delicate, so fragile. Like even the hardest squeeze and the entire thing would break. She knew likely it was stronger than it looked, like she had proved once or twice in her time in the ring, but this was different! She had to be careful with it. She looked back to the little flower sitting in the bottom of the cup and she thought on the taste of what she already had. It was a little salty, but she didn't have much other than that. Although part of her did wonder why it was that way.
She didn't reply right away but she studied the cloudy water before she lightly blew over the cup, the smell caught her nose although she wasn't sure what it smelled like. It almost smelled like nothing, if she was being honest. She chewed her lip for a moment before taking another sip, this time trying hard to focus on what he said. Trying to focus on the flavors and the fact that it had cooled quite a bit already. The taste itself didn't taste too different, but she set the cup back down as she thought for a moment. How would she explain that? She knew there was one way but didn't know if he'd enjoy it. " It's salty for some reason, yet...somehow, sweet?" she knew her observation may not make sense, but he did say he wanted to know. She then pulled her hands back slightly and shook her head as she looked over at him. " It's not forced exactly I'm just..." she trailed off for a moment before looking down at her hands again. " I'm mostly confident in fighting, all of this, it's so new to me that I feel like there's a balance that if I overstep it, I could break the whole thing." she sighed, before looping her middle finger through the loop of the cup handle and lifted it up taking a moment to try and find it in her mind to be able to relax. She really tried, she did, but she hadn't relaxed since she left her home. Even if everyone was so nice, it still didn't take from the pressure she felt on her shoulders to impress everyone. She took another slow drink before she lowered her hand and with a gentle clink set the cup back down. She retracted her hand before she folded them at the edge of the table, her light green eyes raising back up to him. " I did have a question, if you were still open to answering them." she paused before not getting a blatant no and then continued. " I was wondering...why do you talk through that puppet? Ah, I mean, Bubby." she had been rudely corrected that he wasn't "just a puppet" earlier, so she instinctively corrected herself.

"Ryo" "Bubby" It was nice to have someone so eager to listen and learn. Ryo wasn’t used to being a teacher, but his lessons with Florence it was proving to be something he much enjoyed. The woman took to things nicely, and despite her feelings about herself, her manners weren’t half-bad. It was just a matter of instincts; the impulsivity would need to calm down if she was going to accumulate at Utopia without arousing further suspicion from her peers. Ryo didn’t know much about her story, but it was clear she was new to being around royals.
It was a wonder if her story was similar to Lady Nerys's or if her story was different entirely. But to not encourage others to go around digging into his past, he didn’t want to dig into hers. If she wanted him to know, she would tell him such things. It wasn’t his business to know what she had done to accomplish royal status at such a young age. Her confidence in fighting gave him some hope that her means of getting her had been combat focused, but who was to say?
The worry of breaking something beyond repair was something Ryo knew all too well. The prince never wanted a thing to change but this was a part of his own therapy, letting things be and things change. It was okay, it had to be. " There is an art in my country call Cantsugi.* Have you heard of it? It’s where something that is broken becomes more beautiful than it once was." The idea of it was calming to him, remembering a time he had watched an artist perform and having him teach him as a way of seeing the beauty in the broken. Just thinking about it kept the smile on his face.
Watching her take her next sip, Ryo was happy to see she was much slower this time. But there was something her eyes were hiding from him. Something was eating at her; Ryo was curious what it was. Thankfully, the woman was not one for mysteries, prompting if it was still okay to ask a question. He nodded before taking another sip of his tea, focusing on the flavors as her question was not one, he was expecting despite it being something the prince was sure most were curious about: Bubby. His puppet companion was not present today, but, he had been at previous lessons. Now that he could trust the gray-haired lady, he didn’t need the protection Bubby gave him, but he understood why that might raise some questions for her.
Swallowing the tea and placing his glass gently on the saucer, Ryo thought about how to best answer her inquiry. Honesty was always the best policy in his opinion, but Utopia was about creating peace, and Ryo was not sure how the woman might respond if he stated that the stranger made him feel at ease. " Well, I’ve had Bubby since I was small. He was my first friend," the prince’s smile turned soft at the thought of when he first received his wooden companion, " I know he is not real. But having him around has always been a source of comfort. I am sure it is of no surprise when I tell you I did not have many friends growing up. Being royal can have that effect. But Bubby was always there." That was truth, the best way he could spin it, " I hope that answers your question. Do you still keep anything from childhood?" no need to mention the abuse he endured or how his brother had been sent away from him, causing him to isolate again.

Florence was grateful he had been so patient with her. Honestly, she had expected more people to be short with her or expect her to be perfect right from the start. She breathed out as she listened to what he said about the style of art he called kintsugi. She hadn't heard of it before and she shook her head as she spoke quietly, almost hesitantly. " I guess it makes sense, even if something breaks doesn't mean it can't be put back together." her eyebrows pulled together in towards her forehead as she looked down at the cup she still held but had set on the table. She tightened her hands slightly around it before she thought back to her own past; was she worth putting back together? Prince Syena seemed to think so. " Does this art style mean anything significant? Ah, I mean, like does it help people with putting themselves together after their lives are shattered completely and everything changes?" she knew these were likely questions he didn't have the answers to, they were ones that she had to find within herself, but it was proving hard because the name that haunted her that now laid on the paperwork that she had to fill out to come here made her shiver. Stafford. The mention of the last name made her shoulders tense, and she closed her eyes taking a breath to calm down. Focus.
Florence raised her head and pale green eyes looked up to him. She knew enough to look at him when he spoke, that was the first thing she was taught. Well, she was taught that by her mother years before, but it was hard to admit that to people. Especially since nobody here knew of her past. However, as she listened to him speak about the puppet, she felt her body relaxing further. His answer was so honest that she began to almost feel bad for him. She knew what it was like to not have many friends. She looked back down after he asked if she kept anything from childhood. " Childhood is a curious topic for me..." she began, her mouth going a little dry at the mental image of the man who spent his life raising her only to sacrifice himself for her. She bit the inside of her lip hard enough for a tangy, iron taste filled her mouth before she swallowed and for a distraction, took another drink of tea to wash her mouth out as well. She didn't want to tell him the entire truth, but he had at least seemingly been honest with her, so she owed him that very same curtesy. At least, she figured so. " I know about not having many friends...but not because I was born into this." she closed her eyes as she spoke, her hands wrapped around the cup in her hands, the warmth felt good compared to how cold she could be. " I was, let's say, discovered. That I was a relation to someone higher up in power." she could almost feel the birthmark on her arm ache at the thought. " Believe it or not, I used to live in the streets. Not sure where my next meal would come from. So, when I say this is all new to me....I mean it." she knew she may have burned the one connection that they may have had but she wanted to be honest with him as he had with her.
She opened her eyes and lifted her gaze up as she finally gave her answer to his question. " I never had anything worthy enough to keep, although I suppose my father's old shirts would count." she and her mother still had a collection of his things. His wedding band was hanging around her mother's neck most of the time. Now it sat in the top drawer of her nightstand, safe in it's box. " Although we still have his wedding band." her added words were quiet, a soft whisper as she focused in on the flower on the bottom of her cup. She smiled slightly, the last thing her father would have expected would be her at a fancy school, learning how to be a proper lady. She hoped he'd be proud. "Ryo" "Bubby" Having never done it himself, it was hard for the prince to say if the act was truly therapeutic or not. Ryo found the one artist who was able to do it calmly, but doing it himself, he was sure he would get upset and potentially break it further until it was in dust. It was hard to say if such a hobby could magically cure one’s self-worth in one session. He wasn’t a therapist, he was just a prince. Sure, he had flipped through some books on psychology, but the most important rule was that they had to believe they could change. And Ryo wasn’t sure he could. No matter what happened, he felt like the rage would always consume him.
Explaining all of this to Florence, however, was sure to be a mood killer. Something Ryo was trying desperately not to be, " It’s hard to say what is therapeutic about it, but I find the idea behind it beautiful," he spoke softly before taking another sip of his cup. There were still many things Ryo didn’t know about her, but he was happy to teach her in the spirit of peace. The image he was trying to maintain already had a few cracks, but he was hoping some good deeds would paint over those.
Curious was a choice word for her to use. Ryo’s eyebrow raised as she continued, anxious to hear what she had to say next, not having friends meant that they had something in common, but that wasn’t a good thing. It was hard for him to imagine someone like her friendless, outside of needing a few lessons, she was attractive and well-groomed, so there wasn’t any reason for her not to have company. Then again, she had accepted his offer for him to teach her etiquette, but he just hoped there wasn’t a more sinister reason why. The last thing he needed was his paranoia to take hold of him once more.
Her relationship to someone higher up wasn’t a surprise to him. Bastards weren’t uncommon, but it was rare for them to take the mantle of royalty unless there were no heirs to take their place. But something told Ryo that wasn’t the case here, given how ashamed and terrified she seemed. The idea of someone of his standing leaving their own child in the snow was nearly enough to throw him over the edge, but Ryo reminded himself of the cup he was holding and was trying not to crush it with his bare hands.
The way she spoke of her father implied that he had passed rather recently, which must have been a shock to her. " I am sorry to hear that, that must have been rough." He whispered, hoping he heard her but not wanting to embarrass or harass her further, feeling bad for prying as much as he had. It reminded Ryo of when his father had passed, but he was sure that Florence didn’t have a feeling of relief over the passing of hers. It was sick that he did feel that way, despite what his brother said, he was still their father. But this wasn’t about him, this was about the girl across the table from him, who looked saddened by the way this conversation was turning out.
" My father passed, but when I was still young, didn’t make things any easier though."Despite not wanting to kill the mood, he had done an excellent job of doing so. No surprise that Ryo’s ability to take the joy out of a space had to be studied. But now Ryo was left at a loss for what to say; awkward silence was his enemy, as he hoped for his chatty companion to be with them now.

Florence thought hard about his words and she knew that he was right. He couldn't provide the answers she sought, and she knew that. She had to find it in herself to be worth saving, worth fixing and perhaps only then would she have a chance of making those in her life happy with how she turned out. She didn't know how to go about it, and it was hard to find her focus in a place like the school because she felt so out of place. He didn't seem to judge her for her asking though and she nodded softly, a quiet hum leaving her lips. " That...makes sense." The idea behind it was truly beautiful and she hoped that with all the time and effort that Prince Syena, and now Sir Ryo had been putting into her made her feel a little better. Perhaps she was worth saving, perhaps she didn't need to fight her way through life like she used to.
She knew her story was complicated; her father was a kind man who cared for and loved her. And he had thrown his life away just like that, over something that didn't need to be an issue and could have just been accepted. She focused on the tea in front of her before she exhaled, her voice a little hesitant, but he had been honest with her so far, she should return the favor to him. " It was." she exhaled out her nose in almost a brief, sad, laugh. " Although...I bet you couldn't imagine that it was by the hands of the man who turned out to really be my...." a frown twisted over her lips before she continued. " The man who turned out to be my birth father." she tried really hard to keep her expression from shifting, but it proved to be a losing battle. She released the cup from her hands, raising a hand up and pushing her hair back as she looked over to him. " Although, he had immediate repercussions." she took a moment to think through the word she used, before nodding and she moved her hand down slightly to cover her mouth as she tried desperately to hide her smile that began to form. " In the form of me losing my temper and him not walking away from it after that." she felt a surge of pride in her chest, but she then realized that she probably should not have said that. The pride that had built quickly shifted to worry, her eyes snapping up to see how he might have reacted. When he didn't immediately jump up and call her a monster she looked down again, but this time raised the cup and took another sip. It seemed like she still had her habit of keeping her mouth going when it shouldn't.
Her eyes closed as she tried to focus on the cup in her hand as she felt her worry and nerves slowly dissipating. She just wouldn't say any more. Prince Syena hadn't outright told her not to say anything about it but she knew it was a touchy subject sometimes and it didn't surprise her. She may have fought for most of her life; seen people lose their lives because of a lack of care or food...but that didn't mean that most of these people had. No, she had lived a very different type of life than a lot of them had. She slowly opened her eyes as she looked over at him apologetically. " Sorry, um, I probably shouldn't have said that out loud I..." she trailed off not really sure what to say. Hopefully she didn't ruin the entire mood of the lesson with her big mouth. "Ryo" "Bubby" Focusing on the cup in his hand, Ryo attempted to channel his energy towards keeping himself calm as opposed to letting his emotions get the best of him. He had been doing so well at keeping himself composed since dance class and didn’t want to risk rumors of his rage spreading across Utopia. This was their attempt at making peace after all. His offering to tutor someone from another nation was his attempt to cement that he didn’t want to sour it.
But Gods and Spirits be damned the woman was making it difficult.
The sound of defeated laughter escaping her lips was something Ryo familiarized himself with at a young age when dealing with his mother. Laughing the pain away never worked, but it was hard to stop oneself from trying. Was it truly easier to smile than frown? Ryo spent most of his time doing the latter, so it was hard to say. But seeing the same twisted frown on Flora’s face wasn’t welcoming to him. If anything, it was a sign he needed to leave before he caused her any more pain or discomfort.
Fighting the urge to flee, Ryo stayed and listened to her story. Saddened by its outcome, as it was similar to his own. Except she was brave enough to take on her abuser, even braver to admit it. Such things said to the wrong person could result in severe consequences, but this woman didn’t understand that. Was Ryo the one responsible for teaching that as well? " Best to keep that confession close to the belt. Never know who might be listening." Ryo spoke, raising a finger to his lips before taking a sip of his tea.
He didn’t want this.
He never wanted this.
Why was he always the one who had to carry others' burdens? Was it because deep down he enjoyed the idea that he could be a sort of comfort somehow? Doubtful that Florence saw him that way, but it did mean she trusted him at the very least. Given how quick she was to retract her apology, Ryo understood quickly she hadn’t meant to reveal this side of herself. A mistake Ryo had made early on by letting his emotions take hold of him and offering himself to the leeches, otherwise known as his future in-laws.
Placing the cup down on the table between them, Ryo spoke once more, " There’s no need for apologies. Not unless you regret what you did. Based off what you said""Or didn’t say." he thought to himself as he gave himself a moment to collect himself, " The man deserved it. A shame really."
