Hasan bit back a laugh as Charlene jolted in surprise. At least she didn't seem upset or annoyed by his sudden appearance. "Yeah, well, I've got a long history of escaping from my confines in the dead of night. I kinda had to learn how to not get caught," he admitted cheerfully. As a youth, it was sneaking out of the palace. As a soldier, sneaking out of camp. And now, as a student, it was sneaking out of his dorm. Though Hasan had to wonder what the punishment could possibly be. Detention? A slap on the wrist? It wasn't as if the academy staff had any real control over the students. But while he did not fear retribution, he wasn't about to risk dragging Charlene down with him. "My day was pretty chill. I've been looking forward to this all day, though; my curiosity is killing me."
Thankfully, he wouldn't have to wait much longer. Charlene was quick to get down to it, and Hasan watched her carefully, thoroughly intrigued. An exchange of trust, huh? He could get behind that. Not that he'd ever questioned his faith in her. Maybe it was wrong of him to be so quick to trust people when he had nothing more than their word. His instincts weren't always the most keen... But he had a hard time even considering the idea that he might be wrong about Charlene. Especially if she was going to whatever length she was about to go to in order to prove herself.
When she revealed her understanding of his heritage, Hasan grinned, throwing his arms up in mock surrender. "You got me. Pretty hard to hide my origins when I'm out there controlling the literal earth beneath our feet." Until very recently, he hadn't understood what the big deal was in keeping their homelands a secret, why Akwasi was always advising him to be more discreet. But now that Hasan knew about Aithne, the concept of safeguarding secrets made a lot more sense. It was about protecting -- and specifically, protecting their people from the things Hasan couldn't defend them against.
Charlene was not one of those things. And what was done was done, anyway.
The prince cocked his head as his companion began to delve into the meat of their meeting. She had a point; considering how wrong he'd been about her abilities, he really had no idea about what she could actually do. Or what she knew she could actually do. His eyes followed her gaze to her hands, but when nothing immediately happened, he returned his attention her face. So she had a power that let her speak to her kid... That was handy, and probably gave her a lot of peace of mind, being separated from Bree.
But how did one show something like that?
Hasan's face scrunched up in confusion. "Like a... mind link, or something?" he ventured. His understanding of the nature of the abilities of those from the more... esoteric kingdoms was extremely limited. If Charlene hadn't openly admitted she and her princess were from Luna, he never would have known Lunites possessed the ability to transform reality or summon crazy creatures. A mind link sounded more Phronese-esque, so that... probably wasn't it. Unless Charlene had a mixed heritage?
"Whatever it is, I'm here to listen. Or watch. Is this power a secret?" If it was, he'd be sure to keep it close to his chest. "Either way, it's great you have a way to talk to her. I'll bet that makes it easier being so far away."

Charlene didn't have a problem picturing Hasan escaping out a window or sneaking around the halls and it made her laugh under her breath as she shook her head. " You don't have to worry about this, I have explicit permission to do this." she didn't know if he was worried about it, for either himself or her, but she didn't want to worry him. She couldn't help her smile as he admitted to being curious about what she had to show him, and she leaned back against the bench. Sure, she could have worded her phrase earlier better but what's done was done. She closed her eyes just basking in the beams from the moon before she took a gentle breath. " I appreciate you still meeting me, I know it's not every day someone asks to have you meet them so late like this." she didn't know if he made a habit of it, but she sure didn't. His playful retort to her pointing out that she thought he was from Thah made her shoulders relax. He wasn't angry or anything with her, which was good. With a soft hum she pressed her finger to her lips and nodded. " Yes, the ground swallowing up that...creature, was a fairly clear sign. Although it was very cool to watch, and you have a good handle on it." she complimented before she continued to speak. All the while she was picturing her little girl, the fact that she could send her messages made her smile to herself.
With a brief shake of her head she looked up at the full moon that shone above them. " No... it's convenient this is the night I'm showing you though, the moon is at its best for this." she held her hand up and towards the moon as a concentrated beam of light began to form around her outstretched fingers and she seemingly closed her hand around it, pulling it down, close to her chest. Keeping her left hand holding onto the beam she glanced to Hasan from the corner of her eye. She flashed him a soft smile. " I'm from Luna, if that hasn't become clear." she said quietly before her blue eyes focused back to the light she seemingly held in her hand. Using her right hand, she began to move her fingers as if she was writing but the letters and words seemed to be absorbed into the concentrated light. She was quiet for a moment as she wrote out a quick message, before she paused and looked back over to Hasan. " You're the first person to actually ever watch me do this here, you know that? Aside from staff, of course." she felt like it almost solidified that they knew a little more about one another, and that they were allies in what was going to happen.
She signed off, with the flick of her wrist the words began to rise up along the light and she slowly loosened her grip, allowing the light to move at a slower pace than usual. As it did, the light changed from a bright white to almost multi-colors, shifting from one to another before her palm was open and flat, the light dissipating into the sky, before she let her hand rest onto her lap. " This is why I have permission, my power only showed itself when hers did. As far as I know we're the only two who have this, which it's almost like it was meant to be, huh?" as she finished speaking, she looked back over to him and smiled, a little wider and more genuine than before. It was almost like a weight was off her shoulders, someone else knew what she snuck off to do at night and she felt that she could trust him. Something she hadn't had for years prior to this.

She had permission? Hasan raised his brows in surprise, though it made sense once he thought about it. With Charlene's unique circumstances, and, apparently, the nature of her power, some sort of accommodation seemed perfectly reasonable. At least he didn't have to worry about her getting into trouble out here; he only had to look out for himself. Or would being with her give him a pass if he got caught...? Unlikely. It was probably people like him who were the reason the school had implemented a curfew in the first place.
The prince eyed Charlene with interest, noting how serene she looked out here in the moonlight. He could relate. Her relationship with the moon was likely very similar to his relationship with the earth. Just as she found comfort in the moon's rays, so too did he when he was standing at the top of a mountain. What he wouldn't give to be there now, instead of stuck at this school.
"It actually happens more often than you might think. Just not usually for something like this," he answered with a grin. Maybe he shouldn't tease about booty calls with so proper a lady as Charlene, but he couldn't change his nature overnight. Plus, if his lack of manners hadn't scared her off yet...
His grin broadened at the compliment, and he shrugged his shoulders in faux humility. His mastery over geokinesis had been hard-fought, mostly thanks to his time on the front lines. And while something so simple as burying a corpse in stone didn't require too much skill, he was still pleased to know he'd looked cool.
Though he suspected that there was little he was capable of that looked quite so cool as what Charlene was doing now. He watched with wide eyes as her hand began to glow, as if she were holding the moon's light in her palm. Hasan leaned a little closer in curiosity, his gaze trained on the first at her chest, though his eyes flicked upward when she spoke. It was with her other hand that the action lay, though; Charlene traced figures in the air, which he belatedly realized were letters. He was in the middle of trying to follow along with the message when Charlene spoke again, breaking his concentration with her words.
Hasan sat back, once again surprised. "Really?" He supposed technically they hadn't been at Utopia for very long, even though it had felt like a lifetime to him, in some respects. But this only being the third time he'd ever spoken to Charlene, the honor of being the first to see her power felt unearned. An honor it was, though. "That's... Wow." He rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly sheepish and unsure of what to say. Maybe she hadn't made any close friends yet? Either way, Hasan would hold this privilege close to his heart.
Charlene's words merged with the moonbeam, which shifted in hue at her ministrations, before the light was seemingly sucked up into the sky, back from where it had come. Hasan stared after it, even as it disappeared. After a bit, he sunk back down into the bench, still stunned by what he had witnessed.
"Meant to be..." he echoed. "Sure seems like it. Born of the bond you share or something." Hasan knew a lot of abilities were passed through bloodlines, but the how and the why made little sense to him. How was it that Aithne had inherited a power he didn't even know he had until he was almost an adult? And why had she taken after him instead of her mother, like Bree and Charlene? It was a mystery. "It's pretty amazing, what you two can do. I guess I've never given much thought about what Lunites can do beyond the stories I've heard from the war. I've seen plenty of different abilities, but... nothing like that."
Hasan lifted a hand to push the locs out of his face.
"So anything you 'write' gets passed along? Does it work with spoken words? If Bree's asleep right now, does she get woken up when the message gets to her?" He was probably asking way too many questions, but he was just so curious.

Charlene hadn't quite put the pieces together right away when Hasan replied as to why he was called out at night. The idea wasn't beyond her to know that students did such things, in fact she often saw students leaving dorms when she was headed back to her own. Either to their own or out of another she wasn't sure, but she wasn't one to judge. When she did put it together, she couldn't help but feel her cheeks heating up slightly while she laughed under her breath. " So you make these late-night trips often?" she teased him right back, before she had focused back on the light in her hand. She knew that this was like any sort of institution of learning, all different walks of life and personalities blending in one building. It wouldn't be very much fun if everyone was the same anyway. She wouldn't want that to be the case anyhow, that would mean everyone went through their own troubles and could learn from one another. Perhaps that was what intrigued her about getting to know the man despite their clear differences. She never liked to judge anyway, but she was happy that she was able to be someone he trusted with his story. She wasn't sure as to why, but she'd guard the secret as if it was her own.
She let out a soft breath as the moonbeam faded entirely and she smiled before looking over at him again, hoping she hadn't made him feel uncomfortable in the moment. That was the last thing she would have wanted to do, ever, but certainly not in the same day of talking to him in depth for the first time. " It's more that I don't have a reason to show it during the day, unlike your own that I've seen. It's not a practical power in terms of some of the danger we've been exposed to." she leaned back and closed her eyes, basking in the moon's light for a moment before she spoke up again. " And even if I do run into people at night, they're usually on a mission or a professor who knows about why I have permission to do this. So, it's nothing new to them." She had to admit she was curious what it would be like to sneak around and have late night adventures with someone but that was something she didn't see herself doing anytime soon. Not unless she met someone special in the meantime and there was a connection.
Having someone else to talk to was nice, her nights were usually pretty quiet and sometimes, lonely, so she was happy to be able to share the spot she found in particular with someone. She figured that Alkmene already knew about it, but perhaps she'd ask her fellow duchess one day. Maybe. She slowly opened her eyes, looking back over towards him as he thought back on what powers others from her kingdom had. She felt her lip twitch slightly into a curious smile. " I suppose in that regard we are quite opposite. Despite coming from there I don't know much about the other types of powers, never mind the ones that can be used in combat." she didn't know much about Alkmene's powers, or even the princes at that, but she at least had some idea. " Without giving away who and what.... a couple of my companions here have quite the interesting ones. Especially my fellow duchess, she's particularly terrifying." and that was just from what she had heard of. She could safely say that she never once seen her powers in action and for which she was grateful.
He had a follow-up question and she looked back up as she answered him this time. " Ah, normally yes, but the time is different back home. We are a few hours ahead of them so it's more or less..." she paused, doing the math in her head. " Just before her bedtime. 8:30 or so." that was another one of the things that had been a key part of keeping her in Luna, not only did their powers work better there, so she'd be able to get the messages despite if the sun was still out but also it wouldn't interfere with her sleep. Charlene would be okay, she could stay up late if it meant giving her a goodnight message. " Usually I'll get a spelling error filled reply if she's sleepy, but she does have a caretaker with her as well who is able to help her." that's actually all she was waiting for, a reply back and then they would both be okay to head back inside. Hopefully he didn't mind waiting with her, even if he did, she wouldn't be offended if he needed to head back.

Hasan nodded slowly to Charlene's explanation; it definitely would be hard to send messages on moonbeams in the middle of the day. But her comment about practicality made him frown, as he was once again reminded that they were not truly safe here. Ideally, people like Charlene would never be put into danger at all, let alone be forced to worry about whether or not their abilities could serve them in such a situation. "I'm glad to be able to do what I can do," he commented softly, "but what's most important about both of our abilities is they let us do what matters most to us. You can stay connected with your daughter no matter where the two of you are. And I can protect the people I care about. That's all that matters, in the end." Hasan flashed her a grin as he nudged her encouragingly. "Besides, you kicked plenty of a** in the face of danger just with your brain and your own two hands. You've got all you need right there."
With that in mind, he wasn't too surprised to hear Charlene didn't know too much about the abilities of other Lunites. That was for the best, if you asked him. The less people knew about the creative and horrifying ways their powers could be used to hurt and kill others, the better. Before the war, Hasan had never known the moon could burn like the sun. "I believe it. Where I come from, it's all earth and animal-based. Nothing too out of the ordinary, though the way some of their powers manifest is a little... creepy." Like Fio having to bear the skin of whatever animal she was trying to turn into. "But the moon's kinda mysterious and mystical and unknown. Not like the earth, that we can feel and experience right here and now." He stomped one foot on the ground for emphasis.
Maybe he was a little biased about the superiority of Mother Earth.
Having completely forgotten about the time difference between regions, Hasan thumped his head with the heel of his palm. Luna was pretty far from where they were now, if he remembered correctly. "Duh. I'll bet she sure loves hearing from her mama right before bedtime. Probably helps convince her to lay down for the night, too." Kids could be crazy about settling down to sleep sometimes. Idly Hasan wondered if Aithne was like that, if she fought to stay up late every night.
He slumped against the bench, arms still slung across its back, and stared upward into the sky. Honestly he'd never given much thought to the moon before, but he was certainly thinking about it now. Maybe it moved around and sometimes disappeared from view entirely, but it was always there, wasn't it? Always the same, no matter where on the planet you were looking at it.
"What message did you send to her?" he asked while they waited.

Charlene felt a brief pang of surprise hit her, her eyes looking back over to him as he spoke quieter than she had heard him speak before. It took her a moment, but she exhaled and smiled at him. When he nudged her arm, she raised a hand up and laughed against it as she nodded. " I will say, you've got me there. I was not expecting it to work, but I am beyond happy that it did." She also had not expected her reaction to danger to be stepping out in front of it but perhaps all these years of stepping up and protecting her daughter affected her in a better way than she thought. " I'm glad you found it brave, I'm sure Grace found it far less so, perhaps more reckless." She couldn't help but feel like for a split second she had let down a handful of them when she stepped in harm's way but she wasn't about to allow her new friend to be harmed. " Besides, I'm sure you can do much more with that power than you're letting on." she teased him right back, although she didn't physically lean into him like he had. She just flashed him a smile and looked back up at the sky.
She may not have been looking over at him, but she listened. Hearing him stop his foot she laughed again softly. She didn't blame him for being so rooted to the earth. That was often what happened when you came from a certain place. She laced her fingers together as she smiled fondly looking up at the moon. " That is true. It is the belief of many Lunarians that while we exist on the earth, the moon is a driving force that works in tandem with it. While we depend on the earth..." she paused, almost hesitant to voice her words before she looked back over to him. "...that our souls are returned to the moon when we pass. At least, that's what my parents and I believe." she knew it was a fairly controversial topic, but she had a feeling that he would be fine. With a nod of her head, she folded her ankles over each other and closed her eyes again, just basking in the moonlight. " Oh, I'm sure. She's always been a stubborn one, while she has the patience, I was so grateful for she can also dig her heels in when she wants something." her voice took on a loving tone briefly as she kept talking. " And when she believes that she is right? That's a hard battle to win unless you can prove it with facts." she was very proud of her stubborn little girl, and she wouldn't want her to be any other way.
His question about what she sent pulled her back and she opened her eyes again. " Ah, you may not have been able to keep up. It was in our native tongue." she said before raising her head again and looking forward but not towards the moon. " Mon chéri, j'espère que tu as passé une bonne journée. Je penserai à toi pendant que tu dors. Fais un câlin à monsieur lapin pour moi. Je t'aime, maman." her words flowed like they usually did when she spoke Lunarian, her lips curled into a small smile. She looked over to him and even as she explained what she said, she felt her smile widen. A relaxed feeling that she hadn't felt around many people at the school so far. "My darling, I hope you have had a good day. I will be thinking of you while you sleep. Give mister bunny a hug for me. Love mom." she knew it was probably a little overly sweet, but she couldn't help herself when it came to her baby girl.
She couldn't help her idle curiosity, her next question slipping out of her lips before she could catch it. " If it's not too much, if you..." she paused, catching herself. " If your friend could say anything to his child, what would he say?"

Pleased to have gotten a laugh out of Charlene, Hasan grinned at her. The fact she hadn't expected things to work out only made it all the braver of an attempt, but it also meant it had been reckless. Sometimes, in the face of danger, all you could do was try -- and hope for the best. Hasan couldn't blame Grace for being worried, though. He knew precious little about her, other than her strange aura of responsibility over Pascha and Charlene. That was a feeling Hasan knew all too well. And if Grace was anything like him, she probably hadn't wanted either of her blondies to put themselves in harm's way on a whim. Still, he was proud of Charlene for trying, and he hoped this incident would strengthen her resolve.
Well. Not too much, though. She was in Hasan's good graces now -- which meant she was yet another person for him to worry incessantly about.
Her suspicion about what he was capable of made him laugh in good humor. If only she knew even the half of it... "You aren't wrong. Unfortunately, I'm a little limited in what I can do around here. Seems like damn near everything I try to do gets me yelled at by that groundskeeper. But it's not my fault I gotta work with the earth and rock that's around me." Truly, the destructive nature of his abilities was much better served on the battlefield than it was in a civilized setting.
As Charlene spoke of her people's views on the moon, Hasan stared up at it curiously. He knew a little bit about the moon's effect on the earth, how it controlled the tides and all. But souls going back there? That sounded totally made up. Then again, he supposed the same could be said for any belief. Even coming from Thah, he'd been shocked by Fio's religious practices. Souls and the afterlife and all of that -- he wasn't sure he could ever believe in any of it. Nor did he want to. The idea of death not being the end for a person was... terrifying.
Despite his personal feelings on the matter, he gave Charlene a quick nod, and then glanced back at her to find her lounging in the moon's glow. "Makes sense," he commented quietly.
And then she was reflecting on her daughter, in the same adoring tone Fio used when speaking about Aithne. There really was nothing like a mother's love, was there? And Bree sounded so much like his own kid; Hasan could only believe that meant both moms were doing something right. He wondered if the two of them would get along -- or if their stubbornness would clash.
As Charlene repeated her message, Hasan could only stare at her blankly. Damn right he couldn't keep up; he wasn't sure he'd ever even heard the Lunarian language before. Still, he tried not to look like too much of an uncultured idiot when she looked his way. Thankfully, Charlene offered him a translation, and at last he cracked another smile.
A smile that turned rueful the moment Charlene turned her question on him. Hasan glanced to the side, then pushed a hand through his hair and sighed. "Hell, I don't know. Maybe something like... Listen to your mom." He winced, knowing that was a terrible answer. "Or... All the good in you, you got from your mother. Something like that. I -- my friend wouldn't even know how to begin to explain why he isn't in her life. Or why he's so scared to try to be a part of it. I'd..." Hasan grumbled and rubbed his face in frustration. "I don't know. But if I'm gonna ever meet her, I gotta figure it out."

Charlene still didn't entirely understand how the three of them had become so close so fast, really it was just that one night that they all met for the first time and it had just moved from there. She didn't talk too much with Grace one on one since then, nor Pascha if she thought about it, but she was glad to have gotten to know Hasan a little better because she had missed that chance that night. At least she would be closer to him if they ever all met up again. She smiled to herself at the thought before she breathed out, the air chilling slightly so her breath was visible. " I have a feeling we'll all be good friends by the end of this." she spoke mostly to herself before she glanced over at him and smiled a little more.
She almost wanted to ask to see what else he could do, but as he went on and talked about the grounds keeper she laughed again, her expression lighter than it had been in a while since everything had gone crazy in class. She didn't know what most of the others took issue with the man, he was only protecting his job after all. She hummed softly though and shot Hasan a glance that was almost mischievous for the duchess. " Well, perhaps one day when it's not so dark out you could show me more of what you can do and just..." she paused, her hand moving in a circular motion as she grinned. " Put it back the way it was? What he doesn't know he can't be mad about." she knew she was probably putting ideas in his head, but she couldn't help but find the thought of having a part in playing a little joke on the man would be fun. Even if it was harmless, that in her eyes made it all the better after all. He valued the earth so much that he wouldn't do something that was really bad for it, right? She was enjoying the curiosity he brought to the table when it came to her message and the look on his face when he had no idea what she said almost made her laugh again. He was so truthful with his expressions that it was refreshing to see. So many of the nobles here with her were so guarded, never mind the royalty. She understood the need for it, but it was still nice to spend time with someone who was so open right off the bat. One didn't need to study him long to know how he felt.
She did feel bad putting him on the spot with her returned question, especially with the fact that she didn't intend to actually ask it. She was curious, but especially with the situation he was in with his child that wouldn't be an easy question to answer. She tilted her head to the side as she listened however, remaining silent despite the sympathetic expression that flickered across her face. For a moment she wanted to drop the act so she spoke quieter than usual, so to make sure only she and Hasan could hear her. " It's something to think hard on, and you still have time. She is young and you have the benefit of not knowing of her existence beforehand, so it's not like you left her knowingly." she looked back over to him and gave him a reassuring smile. " And if you ever need to run anything by anyone, I'll be here if you need me." she genuinely wanted to continue to be able to be there for him even if under the guise of helping out a friend. After all, to her, he was becoming just that. So, she wouldn't be lying if anyone asked.
She pulled her gaze away as the moon shimmered a little brighter for a moment and the same light that she had sent up when she messaged her daughter began to slowly come down. She raised a hand up, gently letting the light bathe over her hand and this time instead of just letters a little voice echoed, excitement clear in the tone used. " Maman ! Tu me manques tellement, je serai sage, je te le promets. Je t'aime !" there was a little laugh at the end before the beam slowly vanished, leaving Charlene smiling happily. She always loved that she could send her voice if she chose to. It was always easier for the little girl to do so, even if her grammar was off some. Blue eyes flicked over to Hasan again. " That's how she replies." she said it softly.
