The beachwear challenge. This challenge called for designers to create fashion-forward beachwear. I remember looking at this challenge after getting the chop last challenge and going "Well, sh**" because it sounded so straightforward that there was no way I could've messed it up. Sucks to get the chop, but, hey, everything happens for a reason, and look where I am now (a vice-captain of Project Catwalk and a main judge of cycle 5)
Summer by the Seaside Designer: elphiethesane Model: Ophelia
Honestly I had such a hard time with this challenge, not because I couldn’t come up with something, but because I came up with way too many options. I just did a count, actually, and I had 8 completely different drafts, not even including the variations where I played with different arms or backgrounds! And most of them were perfectly viable entries too, so narrowing them down into the one I thought would be best was quite tricky.
Ultimately this one won out by a very slim margin. There was just something I didn’t quite like about my other final choices... One was a “picnic on the beach” concept which was one of my very first ideas, and I loved how it turned out, but to get her arms to line up correctly and make her look like she was sitting on the picnic blanket, I had to squish down the background in a way I just couldn’t quite bring myself to fully get behind. My attempts to get it to work, though, did lead me to the top that I ultimately ended up using, as well as convincing me that I needed to do a sunhat and sunglasses. It’s just so summery, and suits the kind of cool attitude I’ve always associated with Ophelia.
I went back and forth a lot between this and my other final look, though. Partially it’s because the other final look was a sort of retro one with a bit of color scheme mixing that really appeals to my personal style, but mainly because I was hesitant to enter something that doesn’t technically match. Despite remembering these legs partway through the creation process and thinking they would make for a really cool look, I hesitated to use this color because I had absolutely no idea what would match. I’m not entirely sure there are other items with these colors. But I struggled to come up with something I really liked with the recolors, so in the end I decided to try to match it on a whim. When I paired with with the sea breeze top, I knew it wasn’t the exact same shade of green, but it seemed like a lighter shade of the same green when I looked at it, so I thought... Maybe it would work.
With the green in the background echoing the green in her sarong, and the browns that are similar in tone if not in exact shade to the golden yellow, I think I ultimately managed to come up with something that looks like it goes together in a single color scheme, even if it technically doesn’t. I was still hesitant to enter it, though, for that exact reason, but ultimately it won out purely because it just seemed to suit Ophelia more than the retro look did. As much as I like a cool, vintage inspired look, I have to go with what suits the model!
Apologies if this isn’t the most coherent of descriptions, I ended up having something to do tonight and wanted to get something out rather then risk being late. I have other tidbits I could add, but I think this is the most important stuff!
Here's what I would've done: Beachwear? I don't even know 'er. Designer: iiiFlames Model: Abby Description: I live in the Philippines, and we have 7,107 (which is now 7,641) islands. Very cool, very tropical, very summer. We get a lot of tourists from all over the world just to see what the many islands here have to offer. With that in mind, I imagine my model on one of the islands relaxing, taking her time, enjoying herself amidst the sun, sand, and salty ocean.
I found the perfect beach background that is reminiscent of the beaches here in the Philippines. Next, it was onto the outfit. I have this see-through white crop top with a pink bra to cover Abby's coconuts and a sit motion legmod that comes with a short skirt and sarong. I also have this armmod with ruffled sleeves to add more detail to the top part of Abby's beachwear.
For accessories, I have this gorgeous straw sunhat decorated with flowers and leaves and more flowers on Abby's hair to keep the flowers consistent, seeing that the sarong she has on has flowers on the bottom part. To finish off the outfit, I added this brown-patterned beach mat with a basket of food and drinks next to my model. I say this a lot in almost all my entries, but this was so fun to make, and I enjoyed making it.
Wow. What a beach. blaugh

Challenge 10: Mad About Fur
The pet challenge. This was such a fun challenge to do. I mean, who doesn't love animals? Everyone's entries on this challenge were so cute to see (some of the images of the entries aren't available anymore tho. including the winner's).
Here's the winning entry, by Pianette: (the image below is unfortunately unavailable anymore)
Pianette
Designer :: Pianette Model :: Jiang Li The "Collector" Where have you been? // Been searching all along Came facing twilight on and on // Without a clue
Mad about... Feathers? lol The odd thing is that there was literally no question that I was going to pick a bird. Like... y'all say fur... and I actually instantly thought of the long haired dog (because of Jiang Li's hair). Problem is. I don't think gaia exactly provides that. And especially not in black lol But then, minding my own business, focusing on something else entirely. It occurred to me that I needed to choose a bird. And that was that.
I started off with Nevermore because I love Nevermore and despise what he's tagged with. He's very close to the avatar and a bit difficult to use because of that. So I started looking for something else that was a bit more free and usable ahhh. And then there he was, my good boi. Ominous Black Bird's really handy, lots of good dark poses... ya know... cause ominous... Anyway, the first one really stood out to me. Good motion, posing, story; the lot. A good boi.
The head went through the most changes. Started with double wings, went to no wings, smaller wings, one wing but different, found this wing which was the !!! this is the one moment. The face needed something else so I started with glasses even if I was really feeling mask (any mask, for reference, was NOT working). I was attached to the gold pince nez for the longest time while looking for a necklace. But let me tell you what does not work without a nose. Oh yeah. It felt so wrong. The assassin monocle on the other hand felt oh so right. And it fit snugly in with the wing! A bonus!
The entire outfit came together rather smoothly after that. Everything just fell into place. By this point I had settled on a bit of a gentleman thief theme, inspired by a certain winged thief. It's also why I chose Tsarina for the necklace, to mimic that movement. For the clothes, it would've been easy to make a fully black outfit, it's what I do on the regular, but I felt this needed something more. A bit more depth. I felt like the addition of navy kept it still within the realm of muted colors but still differentiated enough of the avatar to keep from blobbing. It also played off the blue of the bird's eye which I enjoyed.
I've gone... back and forth on this background... so much. I have a number of versions saved on my image hoster, just to stare at and compare. I almost cut a different background with a cutter but it left the bird out. It also seemed too empty. This one felt the best, looked right. Again, all plain, very empty. This... this street light. It's like the perfect shape, the perfect size, right location. Like the best thing ever. Most of the recolors it's had have been absolute CHOICES though. I settled with this one since it's one of the ones least offensive to the eye (in this setting) and keeps the hand from getting lost. Ultimately, it's a bit harder to see the gold necklaces (the pro of the darker lamp), but I'd rather have legibility over that detail.
Overall, I feel pretty good about the pet matching. Very happy with how it turned out.
Here's what I would've done: My Deer Companion Designer: iiiFlames Model: Abby Description: I love animals. I mean, who doesn't? And seeing the prompt, I was so excited to see what everyone else would choose as their pets. As for me, I had many animals in mind, but ultimately, I was set for a deer. It's not the furriest animal on the planet, but one of the more glorious and gorgeous ones, in my opinion. To add more of my ethereal aesthetics to my entry, I decided to do a mythical deer in an enchanted forest. There were so many deer companion items to choose from, but I eventually found this one that kinda looks like it's trying to kiss my model.
Then it was onto the outfit, which I assembled together with 2 corsets, a dark brown one that acts as Abby's top undergarment, and a light brown one that ties in together with the other clothing pieces. I also have this gorgeous open bustle skirt and underskirt that went with my deer's colours, as well as this armmod with puffy sleeves and magic on the hands to match with my deer's powers (that circle around its neck). And this bare legmod with a glowing leg tattoo to keep the magic consistent on the outfit.
For accessories, I have these antlers and ears that match perfectly with the ones that my deer has, as well as a white flower crown to add more white to my outfit. Finally, for the background, I chose this vibrant forest to add more life into the look, and break off some of the brown that's blending into the deer and my outfit. Overall, this entry is a pretty solid representation of my fashion style. Very ethereal, very grand, very enchanting.
It's very endeering, don't you think?whee

Challenge 11: On My Head
The water meat challenge. AKA, the item challenge. AKA, the one challenge that would theoretically be my downfall had I made it this far at this point in the cycle. This is similar to the octopus challenge in Cycle 1, so I'm going into this look fairly confidently... I think... Am I?
Practice Made Perfect Designer: RENstrawberry Model: Rae Description:
In this scene, Rae has returned to her old dance studio she practiced in as a child.
Rae had just come from her solo recital, up on the big stage, her first big real performance. She learned from an old classmate that attended the show to congratulate her that the lonely studio had finally been vacated and abandoned.
Still wearing her performance outfit, she wrapped up her goodbyes to everyone and hurried to see the familiar space.
The space was aged now. The vibrant paint of the studio’s walls turned pale. The small once cozy space, felt chilly. Rae wasn’t sure if it was because of the lack of students, or if it was the frail windows poorly insulating the space. The lights, half broken. The ceiling tiles, missing. The floor riddled with junk, yet strangely kept polished and shiny.
It was in the junk she saw it. The plush toy she begged to bring to class every day when she first began attending. The same toy she sat on her head to practice her balance after her instructor scolded her time and time again. She always practiced alone as a child, never in front of anyone. She laughed at how much she had changed.
Rae places the stuffed toy on her head once again. She breathes. Then begins. She soars across the small room, turning it into the large stage she danced on earlier in the night. She remembers the little girl she used to be, telling herself “practice makes perfect, balance is everything, balance is key, balance is beautiful” over and over again. This time the toy never slipped once. Not even when she bowed. She had mastered her art.
This water meat challenge knocked me HARD. Like yikes, I had no idea what to do. It’s such an old item I was so scared about the new and old pixel styles clashing. For Rae’s look, I combatted this fear by searching for water meat’s unique “white” color. I pulled from a couple schemes and items that literally had no scheme to give this final look. I began with her arms which came paired with the off the should sleeves. Choosing this started the entire story behind Rae’s look.
I was so scared I wouldn’t be able to find dancer’s legs that would fit with watermeat’s niche color palette. Luckily I did, and next up was the torso. I wanted a dress that looked like it could twirl, but many of the dresses that matched watermeat’s body all had terrible silhouettes on Rae. Luck struck once again when I was able to find her dress now, which helped to tie in the highlights, mid tones, and most importantly the shadows on watermeat.
The background consists of two layers. The first, the studio itself. I chose this background because it gave a somewhat aged feel. Next, was the wintry landscape in the windows. I really liked them empty (with the transparent background) but I was afraid out of context the transparency would ruin the scene. I chose this secondary background to keep the pale tone and not draw too much attention, like some of the other options.
For the finishing touches, I chose this lighting to really sell the idea that the studio was no longer properly lit. I also symbolically enjoyed it because it seemed like Rae is stepping into the light, just as she is beginning her professional career as a dancer. Lastly, were here earrings. I’m glad both sets of earrings I used layered awkwardly, because it allowed for her to wear two different earrings (to match watermeat of course!).
Here's what I would've done: yum_candycornThe Orange Witch and the Odd-Eyed Ghostemotion_ghost Designer: iiiFlames Model: Abby Description: This water meat looks so cute sitting on top of Abby, and I was getting "ghost" vibes with it, so I thought of making Abby a witch. The green and orange eyes of the water meat remind me a lot of the Calabash colour scheme, but as I was looking for items under Calabash, there wasn't that much that I was able to work with, so I had to look for other colour schemes that had one colour or the other. I decided to go for other orange colour schemes and eventually stumbled upon the Witchly colour scheme, an orange and purple scheme.
The outfit you see before you consist of many parts. It combines a purple and orange top and long sleeve, black gloves, a sit motion legmod with a black overskirt and an orange ruffled underskirt, purple feet, and horns. The background features a swamp setting, a dead tree that Abby is sitting on, a lamp and lantern for added eerieness, and floating spirits (those orange flames around Abby).
For the finishing touches, I added a purple spider web shooting across the background and a purple-hued filter to add spookiness to the entry. Overall, this entry is maximalist down. There are a lot of details, but I'm pretty satisfied with the outfit. Abby's a vision in orange and purple, with her water meat with those cute orange and green eyes.
Orange you glad to see me?xp

Challenge 12: Welcome to the Four Seasons
The seasons challenge. The last challenge of the cycle. It's always exciting and nerve-wracking to see everyone's entries and see who's gonna make it into the finale. I was rooting for my Cycle 1 sister, elphiethesane, to make it to the end (that she did. spoilers). Speaking of elphie, looking through her critiques, the judges wanted green on her entry to give more of a spring feeling, so that's what I did on my take on the challenge.
Cozy & Icy Designer: RENstrawberry Model: Rae Description:
Having completed two and a half winter/icy looks for Rae before, I really wanted to differentiate this look from the previous looks she’s been in. Not sure if the judges randomized the seasons or gave them to us intentionally, but I found this similar theme all the more challenging and yet fun. I suppose the cold is a staple to Rae’s character.
For some reason I decided to start this look off with the background. Not something I usually do, but it was necessary to establish a winter theme early on for my process in order to envision what Rae would actually wear in this environment.
I wanted her layers to be thick and plentiful! So I aimed to really get Rae bundled up to make sure she was nice and warm despite the snow. With so many icy looks under her belt already, I wanted to transform Rae into the ruler of an ice kingdom. I really tried to lean away from the whole Elsa vibe as this incarnation of Rae does not have ice powers. (So she can actually freeze to death!)
For her hand pose, when I used her regular flesh tone I thought it would look strange that she wasn’t wearing gloves in such a cold condition. To solve this I ended up using a similar blue skin tone to help match the clothing to give the effect of gloves! I thought the lantern would be something cute to light her way but also potentially keep her warm.
You can’t see them very well, but I made sure she wore appropriate undergarments and shoes for the cold weather. Doesn’t add to the look but at least is gave me some peace of mind.
Returning to the scenic portion of this look, I added some snow that has begun to collect on her thick coats. Lastly I layered on another background that added what were supposed to be lights, but in this environment I thought they read as snow! The background also dimmed the entire look like a vignette which better pulled off a cold wintry look rather than a happy warm one.
For the finishing details, every royal needs their crown, and while the combo I chose was a little bit more unconventional than most, I’m glad the antlers and head jewelry did the part. I envision Rae now as a mystical protector connected to nature as she watches over this icy domain.
I prepped this look fairly early on, but doubted myself for this challenge a lot and hesitated on posting it. I told myself I would come up with a more casual look to replace this one to play it safe, but decided to stick with my gut in the end and see if this look would finally give me the boot.
currently traveling outside of the U.S., but I still managed to make it on time~
Here's what I would've done: (pretend I got assigned spring as my season) Spring Greens and Floral Whites Designer: iiiFlames Model: Abby Description: It's the last challenge before the finale. I could not be more nervous and excited at the same time. I'll give it my all in this entry. I got assigned spring as my season, and the first thing I thought of after reading the prompt was that one line from the movie Devil Wears Prada, where Miranda Priestly goes "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking." That line lives in my head rent-free. With that in mind, I didn't wanna go for the obvious choice of going florals to represent spring in my entry, but instead, I'm going for a green look that screams spring has sprung.
The Petit Cherie color scheme could not have been a more perfect choice for spring. Then it was onto the outfit. Conceptually, I wanted to go for this bard spring elven fairy, who lives in an enchanted forest, playing her harp happily as spring has sprung upon her abode. Since we're going for an elven fairy, the ears and wings are a must. For the outfit, I wanted to present bloomers abstractly, so I have this cream-white layered skirt for the fluff and volume that bloomers give, and brown shorts for the length bloomers usually are. The outfit also consists of a brown corset top, with a cream-white short sleeve, and brown leggings with a green scarf tied onto one leg.
For accessories, I have this bow that blends well with the skirt, adding more volume to the bottom half of the outfit. As well as this flower hat and glowing decals on Abby's face to really enhance the image of a spring elven fairy that I'm going for. And for the background, I found this gorgeous forest background with blooming flowers that was befitting of the phrase "spring has sprung". I'm super psyched with how everything came together exactly how I envisioned it. Hope I did spring the flowers it deserves.
Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.

Cycle 3 Conclusion
Looking back, I realized I still stand with some of my choices in this cycle. And I also realized I was such a little c*nt with my snarky side comments... But for the most part, I thought I was serving then. I was REALLY feeling my fantasy during this cycle.
I wish that the designers in this cycle come back to the guild. The majority of them left after the guild's inactivity after Cycle 3, including the winner and runner-ups of the cycle. Some designers (I_bord_I, Haji Demon) did come back, but I wish everyone else did too. I wanted to see everyone's evolution and designs more. sad
Anyways, check out Project Catwalk Cyle 3 in the Archives. It's a great cycle. Flames-approved. emotion_bigheart
