Welcome to the Winter Story Contest!

Tell us a story about Winter that involves Hoi in some way. It could be a story about how the Gods celebrate Christmas with their favourite Hoi. A story told to the foals to keep them in line (will they get straw for Christmas?!). Or a light hearted story about the first snow.

There aren't many rules to this one, just have fun with it and give us a holiday tale to warm our hearts. Please only one story per person (make it count!).

Lysa had a story to tell, and her excitement was infectious. The bell in her mane jingled lightly as she moved, her eyes soft and full of warmth as she prepared to tell her story to those who had gathered around.
The younger foals clustered around her, their tiny ears perked forward, while the older horses stood back, pretending to listen casually but leaning in nonetheless. Lysa began, her voice carrying a cadence as gentle as the wind rustling through the trees.

"Did you know," she said with a knowing smile, "that these lands only recently started getting snow?" She paused, letting the question hang in the frosty air. The foals gasped, their breaths puffing out like little clouds, while one of the older stallions gave a skeptical snort though he stayed where he was.
"It's true," Lysa continued. "Before, the lands knew nothing but eternal, endless spring. The air was always lukewarm, and blossoms blanketed every meadow. The rivers sparkled in the gentle sunlight, and foals played in the fields of wildflowers that never wilted."

Her audience was captivated now, even the skeptical stallion. She went on, her voice growing more dramatic.

"It is said that Zeus himself had been in good spirits for a long time and that his joy was reflected in the unchanging beauty of the lands. One day, something happened. No one knew exactly what it was, but there was a great and terrible rift. Perhaps he grew bored, or perhaps we did something to displease him. Whatever the reason, Zeus brought upon us the seasons of change."

The foals huddled closer together, their wide eyes reflecting the flicker of the nearby lantern someone had placed for light.

"Spring no longer ruled alone," Lysa said, her tone softening. "At first, the changes were frightening. The flowers began to fade, the leaves turned golden and fell from the trees, and the once-warm breezes became sharp and cold. But when winter finally arrived, everything changed."

She paused again, looking around at her audience. "You see, winter wasn't a punishment—not really. It was a gift, though it took the herd time to realize it. When the first snowflakes fell, they were so strange and cold that many horses feared them. But soon, the ground was covered in a blanket of white that sparkled like diamonds under the sun. Foals and adults alike couldn't resist its magic. They frolicked in the snow, rolling it into shapes—some even shaped like themselves!"

This earned a few chuckles from the adults, who couldn't help but remember their own foalhoods.

"They fell into the snow," Lysa continued, "and wiggled their legs to make pictures of wings. Some called them snow angels. Families huddled together, not just because of the cold but because the snow brought them closer. It brought families and friends together, not just because of the cold but because of the magic and joy it brought with it to the lands. And that, Lysa concluded, lifting her head high, a sparkle in her eye, "is the story of the first snow."

Her bell jingled once more as she turned and trotted away, leaving her audience to share their own stories of snow and laughter beneath the moonlit sky.

Story: Esti was newly grown when winter crept in. A mikroi sworn to Demeter, a frown had twisted the horse's lips when the snowfall covered the plants that had once responded to her presence. The world had turned brown and then become flooded with white; what a hideous transformation! And further, it seemed the winter was enjoyed! What madness clung to the snow and the chill?

Bedding down in one of the shelters that dotted the valley, she watched the landowner's daughter delight in the snow as they went through their daily food provision for the wild hoi that frequented their land. Kyriaki was usually so sensible with her hands in the dirt as they tended gardens and crops—Esti liked to help with that, wild as she was—but there was nothing to grow in this disaster of cold and flurries! She snorted, annoyed and confused, as she rested her chin on a haybale.

She missed the apples of autumn, the carrots of midsummer. Oats and hay and the dried fruits and the occasional vegetable were fine, but there was nothing like helping oneself to the earth's own produce. Even if Kyriaki would slip them sugar cubes, this weather was atrocious. An offense to Demeter herself!

It was Bahari who found her, sulking for lack of a better term, in the shelter as a fresh round of snowflakes began to fall. The male's white stripes blended in perfectly with the snow, but made his brown and black coloring pop. It made the mikroi's eyes tired, trying to sort out the camouflage and illusion, until he shook the snow from his coat.

"You surely cannot be that cold to hide in the shelter all day," Bahari chuckled.

"It looks like death out there," Esti pouted, "and I don't see any fun in that!" A bit ironic, perhaps, considering the bones that decorated her hide and face. (But that was in honor of autumn and spirits and life!)

The striped hoi considered the orange yellow mikroi.

"Why would Demeter allow this? Why hasn't she come to make it all green and bright?"

A fond smile pulled at the male's mouth; she had such a young soul.

"Esti," Bahari started as he shuffled closer and then folded himself down across from her. "What would you do if you were awake all day and all night and all week and all month and all year?"

A wrinkled nose, "I'd be tired!"

"Very tired and it'd be much harder to think and speak and do just about anything, wouldn't it?"

Esti regretted the conversation almost immediately. When he talked like that, Bahari had a point. She wasn't sure that she wanted to know what it was now. Except he was blocking the exit. She huffed, annoyed, and trapped.

"Yes," the word spilled from her mouth, slow and peeved.

Bahari smiled, "And don't you think the gods and goddesses might get tired, too? If Demeter had to grow everything all throughout the year with no break at all?"

She grimaced, "But, she's a goddess!"

"And she tends to a whole world, Esti. Not just here, you know. This little valley isn't everything there is, though you'll have to ask Ylva about what's farther away than beyond the hills. She's the explorer." How she managed to travel past the hills, the thought alone was tiring to him.

"But, why are the humans all so happy? Why are you?"

"The winter solstice brings festivities for the humans and presents. Some of us hoi exchange gifts, as well. And there are many festivals for Poseidon and Dionysus and, even, Demeter."

Surprise flashed in Esti's eyes. There was a festival for Demeter in winter? She didn't know that. She should know that.

"I can tell you're not convinced, so let us go up to the hill. There's something there you should see," Bahari prompted as he rose and shook the loose hay from his short fur.

Esti opened her mouth to complain, but Bahari interrupted, "If I'm wrong and you don't like it, then you can hide in here all winter and I won't say a word more."

That was too good an opportunity to pass up. Unfortunately. And, of course, Bahari knew that. She sighed.

The two hoi left the shelter as the snow continued to fall. The hillside was not very far from the north and ahead of them footprints from the humans could be seen. A strange sight considered they never seemed to breach the north hills.

Bahari reached the top of the hillside first as Esti grudgingly followed. Eyes shut against the wind, she didn't see the sight until the older hoi nudged her cheek. And then her mouth fell open.

Past the north hills, a forest of trees resided. Not bare and brown like the valley trees. But green and flush and full as though summer had never gone! Esti gasped at the verdance.

"They call them evergreens and they never lose their leaves or their color. So even while Demeter rests, she isn't gone completely," Bahari smiled.

Esti galloped down into the evergreens with delight. Their branches kept the ground free of white! And thought it was still cold the boughs buffeted the wind away and out. She could almost pretend it was summer again!

And so as the humans found their winter solstice tree, Esti found that winter wasn't so bad as she had imagined. And the snow did not bring madness as she feared.

"But I'll stay here or in the shelter as long as it snows," she told the male hoi. "I like the green better and even the yellow of hay."

(I hope it's all right that since I do not have a hippoi now, I wrote about a new friendship between a young one and their human. :3 )

Story:
The god(dess) allowed the cloud to billow forth from their mouth and nose, creating a hippoi foal. While that foal formed, it perceived tiny clouds dripping forth from the god(dess)'s eyes, snow softly drifting down. Like the snow, the foal drifted away slowly, caught by the current of the wind. As the foal-cloud floated away, it watched the god(dess)'s apparent sorrow accompanied by a small, gentle smile. The haunting yet beautiful tableau stayed with the foal for the duration of its dreamlike trip to the world below. But as soon as the cloud bumped into something, the beautiful scene disappeared from its mind.

Below, it was a cold, clear night. The stables were open with horse stalls closed save for one. A young stable hand finished up with brushing a mare down for the night before leading her to the last stall where the stable hand placed hay in the feed box and fresh, clean water into a trough. The mare munched away as the stable hand closed the stall door behind them.

At that moment, the cloud floated into the stable and drifted aimlessly until it bumped into the stable hand's leg. They were both surprised and the cloud made a distinct popping noise! The cloud disappeared, and there stood a hippoi before the girl.

The usual initial meeting came and went, and the name of the hippoi was learned: Semele. The new friends looked outside. Those snowflakes from before seemed to be falling more heavily than before. "Look!" exclaimed the young hippoi.

"It's snow!"

Who can resist the falling snow? They raced outside and looked all around them and it was everywhere. The soft, white fluff had followed the hippoi down from the gods, with their blessing. Together as the snow began to accumulate, they played tag and tried to catch it on their tongues as it fell.

"You got some on your nose."

The hippoi tried to lick the snow off her nose. "You have it in your hair."

The girl shook off the snow, only to be covered again within minutes.

Together they laughed, the young hippoi's voice a soft whicker. They played a while later until they were damp and tired, ears and nostrils reddened with cold. "Let's go inside. I'll dry you off." And once they were both dry (or "dry enough" ), they curled up together and fell asleep in the hay.

Story:

The Haloea festival was a glimmer of warmth and light in an usually cold, dark and bleak winter. Unlike other traditions, this festival was relatively new. The mare took her time strolling past the agora’s stalls eyeing all of the trinkets on display. She smiled as she brushed past a particularly large display of greenery. It was a nice touch, she thought. Her eyes followed the trail of lights, candles were alight and placed upon every available ledge. Though there was a chill in the air, most of the Hoi and people did not mind it. They smiled and laughed between dregs of mead. Their cheeks grew rosy either from the cold or the drink, it was difficult to tell. It wasn’t long before she finally reached her destination, a large bonfire set in the center of the city. She noted that it was larger than last year’s before her attention was broken by a loud cheer, “Haloea!” The Hoi looked up to see Dionysus, swaying slightly with his goblet high in the air. It appeared he had started celebrating early.

“Haloea!” The crowd returned the cheer then those that could hold a cup partook in their drink.

The Hoi smiled and shook her head. “Hello, Dionysus. I see you’ve been busy with improvements.”

“Ah my sweet Haloea, nothing is too much for you. Each year this festival will be even bigger and greater than the last! That I promise you my dear friend.”

She knew this to be true, he had even named the festival after her, and he would outdo himself every turn of the calendar. The god turned in one swift movement and grabbed a bundle of pine branches. He set his wine down with very little wobbling then placed the bough over her head. “There, that’s more festive.” He placed a smaller one upon his own head and gave her a wink, “Now let’s partake in some sweets and drink!”

Story: The soft, almost feather like snow drifted lazily from the clear sky creating a blanket of white for as far as the eyes could see. It was a beautiful sight although it was also a blinding one. The brightness of the snow was reflected causing what appeared to be illusions among its landscape.

A journey that started a day ago now became exhausting, Chrysanthi was on her way to barter goods and was carrying what she needed, she was self-sufficient. The small sled like device she created did not require much power to pull and it was easy to maneuver along the soft snow. Realizing she was about to come to a hill she decided to save her strength and just allow the inertia of the sled to pull her down the hill and she would guide it with the ropes. It wouldn't be a long trip, but it would give her a small respite period.

As she crested the hill she smiled as she settled in on the back of the sled and used her weight to push off and over causing her to slide down and a reasonable speed. She laughed freely, feeling like a youngling again. She was enjoying the feel of the wind as it whipped about her face and hair, the cold kiss of the wind on her cheek.

About halfway down the hill, she saw something out of the corner of her eye, turning she saw what appeared to be a soft cloud floating above the snow-covered landscape. Pulling on the ropes she came to a swift stop and climbed out of her sled and walked slowly towards the cloud. Blinking she felt elation, reverence and fear as she knew what beheld her sight.

Looking around for any sign of another human and seeing none she carefully knelt in front of the cloud and waited. The moments passed by as she waited anxiously and then suddenly the cloud seemed to move. Within a few moments the cloud seemed to split open, and a small, beautiful foal appeared and floated down to the ground and landed softly. Not knowing what to do she waited to see if the foal would move after some time, she decided to remove her outer cloak and wrap up the foal and carry it back to her sled. Once there she carefully placed the foal down, made a small bed for it and sat back down to continue traveling down the hill.

Once the sled came to a stop at the bottom of the hill, she heard a soft sound and turned to see the little foal standing, shaking off the snow and staring at her. It seemed to be studying her as if sizing her up.

Chrysanthi seemed frozen as if unsure what to do but then she suddenly spoke in a very soft voice "My name is Chrysanthi, I am a friend. I found you and I believe I was meant to become your human." she moved her head to the side and looked at the foal. The colors seemed very vibrant due to the background of the white which made a striking contrast.

Suddenly she heard a voice and turned to look at the foal. "You were destined to find me as I was made for you. You may give me my name."

Surprise was the only word Chrysanthi could think of, she receives a gift from the gods but also chooses its name. This was an honor indeed! Clasping her hands in front of her she pondered her next words carefully. "I will think of the perfect name for you little one but until then shall we continue with our journey? I am 2 days out from where I need to be to barter the goods I have. I am low on certain supplies then once my business is concluded I will return home"

The foal jumped out of the sled and began to play in the soft snow. Chrysanthi began to laugh and decided to join in on the fun. The foal used its hooves to toss snow towards her and Chrysanthi threw very soft snowballs at the foal in return causing ripples of laughter to escape her. Her cheeks felt cool as the wind whipped about the fun to be had was worth the cold. The foal seemed to be enjoying playing so they played until both was tired and decided to rest awhile before finding somewhere to camp for the night.

They eventually made their way to a small cave that Chrysanthi knew about, she started a fire and made some food it was simple fare but filling. She also had some straw in her bag and offered to the foal which happily ate it. Deciding it was time for sleep they snuggled and drifted off.

This was only the beginning of their adventure.
