As Pascha explained the locomotive, he wondered if there was a way to make a similar conveyance powered by electricity. He was sure there had to be a way, of course, but could Uilum harness enough electricity to make the endeavor worthwhile? It was an exciting prospect for Pascha for whom electricity was still an elusive idea, a goal just out of reach of his grasping mind. He understood much about it just from listening to Ellis and observing his schematics and discarded parts, but the puzzle was definitely not completed in his mind just yet.

Pascha nodded energetically as Ellis spoke of working on a project just for the enjoyment of it with no restrictions or obligations. It really was so very freeing! Sometimes it was almost too much, which Ellis had experienced as well. Having too many options and the freedom to pursue any one of them could put one in a sort of paralysis, spoiled for choices. Sometimes even the idea of sticking with what was feasible didn’t even slow Pascha down! That just meant he was on the verge of finding something new! Or completely wasting his time, but it was still a lot of fun.

Ellis’ engineering joke brought a huge grin to Pascha’s lips and he snickered a little; he was a sucker for jokes like that! Ellis wasn’t one to make a lot of jokes and he didn’t even laugh, but Pascha was more than happy to laugh for the both of them.

Pascha thought for a very brief moment when asked if he had worked for a company or the government. He tried very hard to be careful with information surrounding his work; he knew that a clever person could learn so much more than he had thought he actually said. But he did not want to lie and he did not really even like withholding information unless he had to. Ultimately he decided he could answer this question, at least. Carefully.

”I worked for my government. It probably doesn’t sound feasible at my age, but my ability allows me to understand the workings of things if I can see them or get my hands on them. Once my parents realized that, and well the fact that getting knuckle deep into the workings of things would at least keep me from running amok, I was put to work. In some ways I was half raised by the engineering team; I always had them at my back to try out whatever crazy ideas I had. Haha, well, whatever ideas I could get approved… Not all of them were winners, hahaha!” The memories were joyful ones for him, even knowing that he was working on implements of war. The camaraderie still meant the world to him… even if it probably was part of the reason he was so awkward around normal people.

”I’d like to tell you about lots of things, Ellis. I want to tell the whole world things, but especially people like you who can really understand and appreciate them. Just… I hope you understand when I can’t tell you some things, even if I really want to. Some things are secrets that don’t really belong to me. And some things are just a little hard to talk about. But you can ask me anything and I’ll do my best to tell you everything I can.”

Pascha was quick as ever to respond to Ellis's carefully chosen question, and for a moment, the older engineer wondered if there was anything secretive about the ordeal at all. Then he promptly forgot about that, because Pascha revealed a different sort of secret:

The truth of his own ability.

Theoretically, learning this should have given Ellis some sense of satisfaction. If the gap between their skill could be explained by some preternatural blessing wholly out of either of their control, he had no reason to feel inferior, because the race had been rigged from the beginning. No amount of hard work could ever match up to a god-given gift. This should have been an opportunity for Ellis to let go of some of that bitterness, to resolve to stop measuring their accomplishments against one another.

Instead, he felt… like maybe that wasn’t an ability at all? Wasn’t being able to understand how something worked just a part of Being Really Smart…?

Or did Pascha mean his words very literally? If he looked at a machine, did its inner workings and mechanisms appear in his mind’s eye? Was the information of its function beamed directly into his brain? Or perhaps the nature of his ability was more complicated than how he made it sound?

The laughter ringing through the workshop snapped Ellis from his thoughts. He shook his head, clearing the fog of his momentary stupor. Regardless of the specifics of Pascha’s power, the knowledge of it did not, in fact, change anything at all. While it explained how Pascha could build things without fully understanding the science behind them, that was only one facet of his repertoire. It did not account for his natural intelligence, or for what he had accomplished through his own hard work.

Concerns about the lack of child labor laws in Pascha's country aside, his brief explanation offered a fair amount of intriguing new information. How interesting it must have been, to be able to grow up with and learn from a group of mentors and colleagues. Ellis had never once minded the solitude of his own education and experimentation, but sometimes he wondered what it would have been like to experience something like that.

Pascha catching onto the root of his not-so-discreet questioning came as no surprise, and Ellis nodded once in acknowledgement. It wasn't as if he was expecting Pascha to reveal governmental secrets; he'd only wanted to figure out how the blonde had ended up involved with such matters in the first place. Of course, knowing there were governmental secrets made him all the more curious, but if there was no hope of gleaning anything, he would not push it.

What did come as a surprise was Pascha's very earnest insistence that he would offer up anything he could. So Ellis did what he always did: he Made A Face and looked away. "I understand completely," he retorted. "I can assure you I have no interest in stealing any national secrets. I was only curious about how you were brought on to work on such a huge project at such a young age. You certainly don't owe me anything, but from a purely academic standpoint, I do appreciate all knowledge gained." He tapped the butt of his pencil against the table's surface. "I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you that I have not been afforded many opportunities to discuss technological topics with other people. My family are all rather a bit more... business-minded. And my only friend is..." Ellis grimaced, glancing in a different direction. "Anyway. I know I may pry at times, but you are well within your right to tell me to mind my own business at any point."

With the papers organized, and a fair amount of bits and pieces for generator components gathered, Ellis took a moment to survey the spread. "I believe we have enough to begin with the barest of basics. Do you have time to start right now, or would you like to save our first steps for the next time we meet? By then I should be able to procure a great deal more of what we need."
