Kai’s breath hitched as Shingen’s words reached her, soothing some of the ache that had gripped her heart. The warmth in his eyes and the sincerity in his voice wrapped around her like a gentle embrace, softening the jagged edges of her doubt. His promise, his assurance, felt like a lifeline she hadn’t realized she needed so desperately. Her tears slowed, though a few still traced paths down her flushed cheeks.

She managed a shaky laugh at his mention of meeting his family, her emotions a swirl of relief, embarrassment, and something she couldn’t quite name. The idea that he valued her enough to include her in something so personal tugged at her chest, leaving her simultaneously nervous and comforted. Kai sniffed a little and nearly lowered the blanket the rest of the way but in that moment, she realized one terrible thing. Her nose was running! Oh goodness, she couldn't let him see her with snot dropping from her nose! She could feel it creeping down toward her lip, but she had nothing t wipe with with! Kai looked down at her clothing, realizing she was no longer wearing her sweater. A sleeve was out of the picture. Should she use her hand? That would be so gross and slimy but she could just... trap it and hide it until she found a good reason to run to the bathroom to wash her hands. Oh, but that idea was just so gross. And she couldn't get the sheets dirty!

Kanna then re-entered the room, Kai's eyes flicking to the older woman as if she could somehow fix the situation. Tea however, was not the fix to this but Kai found herself nodding along anyway, too polite to refuse while managing to keep the blanket covering half of her face. Ahhhh it was still creeping!!! Her glossy cinnamon hued eyes flicked to Shingen. "D-do you have a tissue?"

It appeared that Kailani was beginning to settle, her tears slowing and even some levity showing when she chuckled. Shingen was relieved, so much co that his smile would not leave him. It wasn’t until he caught Kanna watching him that he became self conscious and turned away from her, pretending to be busy with their luggage. The tea and the table had been set and awaiting it’s guests. When Kai asked for tissues, Shingen scrambled back over to her. ”Of course. I’m sorry.” He replied for being inconsiderate. Reaching into his back pocket, he pulled out a tenugui, a japanese handkerchief of sorts. A gentleman always carried one. Shingen handed it over to Kai then turned back to Kanna. It was a rectangular piece of unhemmed fabric, dark blue in color but at it’s center was the Maeda kamon, or family crest.

Turning to Kanna in order to give Kai a bit of privacy, he asked her a question, “Is there anything I can do? You’ve been such a help.” Shingen was eternally grateful for the hospitality despite their sudden arrival. Kanna pauses mid-pour, her sharp eyes softening as she looks at him. She finishes pouring the tea, hands Shingen a cup, and then sits across from him. Her voice is calm, with a touch of warmth. “ You’ve been through enough, Shingen. Offering to help says more than you realize. But if you really want to do something for me…” She said as she looked him directly in the eyes. “ Stop carrying every burden as if it’s yours alone.” Shingen stiffens slightly, his hand tightening around the tea cup. Kanna leans back, her expression thoughtful but firm. “You think you’re the only one who feels responsible for this village, for the people around you. But what about her?” She gestured toward Kai. “She’s here because she chose to be. Because she believes in you. And me? Nobuhiro? The others? We’re here too. Yet you act like the weight of the world is yours to carry.”

Shingen lowered his gaze, guilt flickering across his face but Kanna softened, her voice quieter now. “I don’t need you to repay me, Shingen. What I need...what we all need...is for you to trust us. Let us carry some of that weight. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone.” Kanna picks up her own tea, taking a slow sip before adding with a playful smirk: “If you really want to repay me, though… there’s a pile of herbs that need sorting. But something tells me you’re better at fighting spirits than drying leaves.” Her teasing tone breaks the tension slightly. Shingen huffs a quiet chuckle, shaking his head as some of the weight on his shoulders seems to ease.

Kai accepted the handkerchief with a quiet, murmured, “Th-thank you,” her voice soft and thick with lingering emotion. She dried her cheeks first, pressing the fabric gently to her flushed face before gingerly dabbing at her nose. The thought of dirtying something so personal made her feel awkward, but she couldn’t exactly not use it now.

While she worked, she couldn’t help but eavesdrop on the conversation between Shingen and Kanna. Their words washed over her like the warm steam from the tea Kanna had poured, carrying a weight that settled heavily in her chest. She tried to focus on folding the handkerchief neatly, tucking the yucky part carefully inside. Her fingers trembled slightly as she slid it into the waistband pocket of her shorts, deciding she’d wash it later and find the courage to return it properly.

For now, Kai gathered her own courage as she put the bed back together and smooth down the blankets. Once she was ready, she quietly padded over to where the tea had been served, coming up in Shingen's blindspot in a quiet, mousy way. One hand reached out to tug shyly at his sleeve, her touch tentative but firm enough to catch his attention.

When he turned to her, she glanced down, her cinnamon eyes fixed on the fabric of his sleeve before she finally spoke. “You don’t need to feel alone,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper but filled with quiet determination. She peeked up at him, her cheeks ruddy from crying but her gaze steady, sincerity shining through the awkwardness of her words. “Even if I can’t do much, I’ll do what I can.”

Kanna’s firm advice drew a pensiveness from Shingen. He took a sip from his hot tea, his eyes low in contemplation. When Kai tugged at his sleeve, he turned to find a compassionate look on her. She assured him that he wasn’t alone and pledged to do what she could. Smiling, he nodded with a new acknowledgement, marked by the way he searched her eyes. Shingen let them take their time enjoying their tea. Kanna must have worked her magic and put something in the leaves because by the time they had finished and were on their way, a deep and settled peace was upon them.

Returning to the main road up towards the temple, Shingen had his eyes up, looking ahead, ready for whatever awaited him. As the doctor tidied things up and returned to her work, she found Nobuhiro leaning against the door frame at the entrance, arms crossed in the leisurely way he often stood. “He’s different, isn’t he?” He said. Kanna only glanced over to him once to acknowledge him before moving to the bed in order to strip it and replace the bedding. “I mean, he never really cared all that much...about anything, really.” Nobuhiro shrugged, looking for any kind of reciprocation but Kanna only smiled that gentle, maternal smile. “The last time you saw him, he was still a child. At some point, we all have to grow up, don’t we?” She peeked up at him and he looked a bit taken aback as being called out then turned his head and pouted with a huff. “Yeah, I guess...”

The sun was beginning to set by the time they were back on the road but it was not far to their destination now. The lights on the main road began to be lit. There was an interesting marriage between the clearly antiquated architecture and modern innovation, well reflected in the varying kinds of lighting each building had. Paper lanterns lit by electrical means, designed to look like fire on the inside could be seen beside individual, ambient LED lights meant to light up pathways in and around the buildings. Foot traffic was also slower now as the village readied itself for dinner, villagers all coming home to roost. As Shingen and Kai walked by, however, many of the pedestrians would stop upon recognizing him and bow in a deeper kind of way to show respect. He would nod his head to each and every one, grateful for the gesture but fighting the feeling of guilt in his gut. There were a few who looked on with disdain and stared defiantly as they passed by. Shingen did not meet their gazes but glanced over to Kai, hoping it did not put her off too much.

Eventually, the path opened up to a crossroads ahead where a staircase led up to a Torii gate leading to the Maeda Temple. There was someone standing near the crossroads just to the side, partly obscured in shadow, cast by the true lantern light of the stone lanterns flanking the corners of the four paths. The posture of the figure was one of a man but was made even more threatening by the way he looked to be waiting for them. Expectantly tense, arms at the side but hands clenched into fists. Shingen already knew who it was before they ever reached him and tension had already welled up in response. So much for Kanna’s tea.

Well if it isn’t the prodigal son, back to grovel.” He said in an insulting tone. Shingen intended to walk past him and up to the temple for sanctuary but the way the man stood in the middle of the road made that impossible. “You’ve got some nerve showing your face here again.” Shingen's jaw clenched in frustration as the two stared each other down. “Tatsumaru.” Was all Shingen muttered. The difference in light had forced his eyes to adjust, eventually focusing upon a well-muscled man not far off Shingen’s age although still appearing a bit younger. He was of a dark countenance, his appearance almost mirroring his predisposition. Tatsumaru was Shingen's younger brother. A much more intense and fiery fruit of the Maeda main branch.

You thought you could just show up here again after running out on us?” He said, Shingen noticed a blade sheathed at Tatsumaru’s side. “You wouldn’t understand, Tatsu.” He replied, almost through gritted teeth. “Understand!?” Tatsumaru took a step forward as if being provoked by an insult. “I understand plenty! You were too much of a coward to face the music. You never had it in you to be a real leader, so you spat in the face of the elders and ran!” Tatsumaru was becoming increasingly angrier and Shingen's dismissiveness only seemed to fuel the fire. “I’m not doing this with you right now.” Shingen said, trying to hide how true his words had struck and how unprepared he actually was to defend himself.

By then, two more people had appeared at the summit of the stairs, looking down on what was happening below. “Tatsumaru!!” an older man’s voice called out from above, drawing the attention from both men. IT was only then that Shingen realized his brother had a grip of his weapon and released it when he saw who was calling him. “We’re not done.” He hissed before storming off down the left path. As he moved away, he had given Kai the same look he gave Shingen, full of ire and disgust. “I’m sorry about that". Shingen apologized, staring past the stairs and into nothing in particular. “I’ll have to deal with him at some point.” He then looked up at the people waiting on them at the top. There was a burdened glance over to Kai to make sure everything was alright before beginning to climb.

Kai savored the warmth of the tea, letting it settle her nerves, and by the time they left, she felt calmer—lighter, even. The evening air carried the comforting scents of the village winding down for the night, and for a while, she let herself enjoy it.

But as they moved through the streets, she couldn’t ignore the contrasting emotions in the atmosphere. It was unsettling. Clearly, Shingen was a bigger deal than he had made himself out to be—everyone knew him. Kai was starting to wonder what his family really meant to the villagers and what his importance was to these people. Some bowed deeply with clear reverence, while others barely acknowledged him, their gazes cold or openly disapproving. The contrast made her stomach tighten.

Of course, no one was paying her much attention, but she did catch several curious stares. The sensation made her hyper-aware of herself—her squat frame, the way her wavy brown hair frizzed slightly from the humidity, how her western clothing and pinker skin marked her as an outsider. She felt out of place, fragile in comparison to Shingen’s solid presence beside her. Still, she straightened her back, squared her shoulders, and lifted her chin. Shingen clearly held an important status here, and if she was walking beside him, she didn’t want to seem like she didn’t belong.

When they reached the crossroads, tension spiked in the air like a blade cutting through the relative quiet. Kai sensed the presence of the man standing in the shadows before he revealed himself and visibly stiffened. The resemblance between them marked him as Shingen’s relative, though she didn't know him well enough to place exactly who he was.

Her gaze flickered over him, taking in his rigid stance and the simmering anger rolling off him. He looked closer to her own age—maybe even the same. But beneath the anger, she could sense something else. A hotbed of angst, loneliness, disappointment, abandonment—all masked behind hostility. Despite his awful attitude, Kai couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for him. He reminded her of her little brothers when she didn’t spend enough time with them, only magnified tenfold.

Her brows pinched together with an expression of pity and concern until she suddenly realized he had taken notice of her.

Cinnamon-brown eyes widened in alarm at his harsh glare before darting to the ground. She fidgeted instinctively, adjusting her glasses so they wouldn’t slip from the downward motion. His ire was not something she wanted directed at her.

Tentatively, Kai reached out and tugged at the back of Shingen's sleeve, careful to pinch only the fabric. "Shingen, I don’t think you should just let him go. Under his anger, I can feel that he’s hurt.”

Unlike Shingen, who kept his emotions tightly controlled, that Tatsu boy was like a beacon, radiating his feelings in every direction. She shifted uneasily, her voice dropping to a softer tone. “You should go after him.”

Shingen watched Tatsumaru storm off. He knew that things were going to likely escalate if they continued but Shingen truly had no words for his brother at that moment. There was much truth to what he said and in reality he had left all the same. He knew there would be people that would be hurt and those that would resent him for it but he felt like it was something he had to do. Feeling a tug at his sleeve, Shingen turned to see Kai telling him to go after his brother. “I don’t think now’s a good time. He needs to cool off, Kai. It’s…just too soon.” He said hesitantly. Shingen would face him soon enough, he owed him that much. He slowly started up the stairs, hoping Kai didn’t think he was making excuses. There was a sliver of fear in the idea of the confrontation, enough to give off the notion that he was putting it off.

At the top of the stairs and just within the red framed gate, stood two individuals. To the left was an older man dressed in priestly garb and on the right was a woman closer to middle age, dressed traditionally like most of the villagers but not nearly as flashy as the elder. When Shingen and Kai approached, the two smiled. “Welcome home, my son.” Said the older man before lowering himself into a bow where the woman also joined. “It’s good to see you again, grandfather. Mother.” Shingen replied with a look of relief and warmth. He bowed to them in return. Shingen wasted no time introducing Kai. “I’d like you to meet Kailani Zaccheus. She is the wielder of a very interesting kind of magic and a close friend.” He said, turning to her now. “It means a lot to have her come along and put up with everything she’s had to put up with until now.” The last part mostly directed towards her.

It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kailani.” The woman spoke this time. “My name is Hajime. I am Shingen’s mother.” She bowed again. “And I am Hideki. Shingen’s grandfather and head of the temple.” He followed suit. “Come, You both must be weary from the journey. I understand you paid a visit to Kanna on your way in? Is everything alright?” Hideki asked them as they began to walk into the courtyard at the forefront of the large temple grounds. It could be assumed they were at one of the highest points, elevation wise, due to there being nothing above the temple and it’s buildings save for the mountains.

Oh, yes. We needed a break. The way up felt longer than I remember.” Shingen chuckled. “What brings you here, Kailani?” Hajime politely asked, her hands folded over each other and a curious expression on her face. She was her usual hospitable self but seemed to take an interest.

Kai chewed her lip, glancing between Shingen and the direction Tatsumaru had disappeared. She could still feel the lingering weight of his emotions—raw and tangled, laced with a kind of pain that reminded her of an old wound torn open. Her fingers curled slightly, tempted to reach for Shingen’s sleeve again, but she stopped herself.

“I understand,” she said finally, her voice quieter now. “Sometimes people need space when they’re hurting… but waiting too long can make things worse too.” She hesitated, searching his face for any sign that he might reconsider. “Just… don’t let too much time pass, okay?”

Her cinnamon-colored eyes softened, full of understanding. She knew better than anyone how easy it was to let things fester—how hard it was to fix something once the gap had grown too wide. “He’s angry because he cares. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been standing there at all.”

She gave him a small, reassuring smile, hoping he’d see she wasn’t judging him, just… worried. Then, without pushing further, she fell into step beside him as they continued up the stairs. When they reached the top, Kai hesitated for a moment, feeling the weight of their attention on her. She tucked a strand of wavy brown hair behind her ear, her fingers briefly brushing against the frame of her glasses as she tried to find the right words.

“Well, um,” she started, her voice soft but steady. Parents were much easier to handle than people her own age. “The Bureau of Magic sent me on this internship, though I’m still not exactly sure why they picked me. But I’m really grateful for the opportunity! It’s been… an experience so far.” She let out a small, nervous laugh, then quickly straightened. “And I wanted to support Shingen, of course. He’s been helping me a lot, so I thought I’d return the favor however I can.”

She glanced up at them, her cinnamon-colored eyes warm with sincerity. “I don’t have much experience outside of my hometown, so I’m just trying to take everything in and learn as much as I can.” Her fingers fidgeted slightly with the hem of her sweater before she caught herself and clasped her hands together. “It’s really nice to meet you both. Thank you for welcoming me into your home.”

She bowed, hoping she was being respectful enough, before peeking up at Shingen as if to ask if she’d said the right thing.

It likely wasn’t clear to his elders that Shingen was still frazzled by his brother’s confrontation but he recognized that Kai surely would. Her wise words sat heavily with him as they continued on inside, although he tried to live more in the moment for his family’s sake. His mother looked all together pleased but women had a way of putting their best foot forward when it called for it. He could tell that she was genuinely happy to see him but there was no way around the fact that they had not spoken or seen each other for a long time. The same could be said about his grandfather. The older gentleman, however, was a deep well of understanding that Shingen could never get a read on. Shingen had often found it difficult to hide anything from him and would eventually stop trying altogether.

Shingen could hear Kai’s and his mother speaking, the smaller brunette being as polite as ever and reflecting the same energy and respect as she bowed. He couldn’t help but smile warmly at the sight. It was true that Shingen had recruited Kai to come along but in reality, he wanted to keep everything about their dealings a secret. The money that he happily donated to her family’s business and all the resources expended to have her come along had been made on his own accord. And with everything involving The Watcher and the incident in Barcelona, he had to do everything in his power to keep her safe. Even now, he had people watching over her family, just in case.

Leaving the courtyard and entering into the estate, the four walked into an immaculately kept home. Hallways of locally procured wood flooring stretched out before them, lined with walls with wooden trims and Japanese paper door framing. The spaces were ample and set in a way that allowed free movement across the building although everything from bedding and cookware was readily accessible through compartments as was the Japanese way. There was also the lingering scent of cypress wood filling the space, likely coming from a stick of incense burning somewhere.

I see! You must be doing important work. Thank you for supporting my son. He’s always kept more to himself so I’m glad he has good people at his side.” Hajime replied. The two turned to Shingen and Kai once they had come to the central point of the house. “ As you must know by now, the elders want to speak to you.” Hideki said to Shingen much to his rancor. Expecting this, Shingen's grandfather waved his hand a few times and spoke again. “ Do not give that much thought. I am sure there will be plenty of time for that. In the meantime, please make yourselves comfortable. We will have a special dinner prepared for you tonight as to welcome you properly. It will also give friends and family a chance to see you in case business takes you away quickly.” The thought of a home cooked meal sounded just right and Shingen was sure Kai was just as hungry as he was after their trip.

That all sounds great, grandfather. Thank you for going through all the trouble.” Shingen expressed gratefully. “ It is no trouble, my son. Hajime will show you to your rooms. You will find that we have provided most of what you will need. If there is anything else you require, please make it known and we will make the accommodation.” Hideki smiled. “Thank you, very much.” Shingen bowed quickly before his grandfather took his leave. Hajime happily moved down the hallway to the left, leading the two. A few quick steps and they stopped. “ This, as you remember, is your room, Shingen.” She gestured over with her hand to a closed paper panel before continuing down the hall. Stopping once more, she turned to face them and gestured to a room on their right now. “ Here is your room, Kailani. I hope you will be comfortable here.” Her room looked into the garden and was fully stocked for guests to enjoy. It included an attached full bath, television, phone and a few set of traditional clothes and sandals.

I will take my leave to prepare for dinner but if you need anything, the phone in the room dials to the attendant’s station.” She explained gleefully. She then dawdled for a moment, looking to Shingen. “ I’m happy you’re home, Shingen.” His mother said before Shingen embraced her. “Me too, mom.” He said quietly, closing his eyes. Not trying to make too much of a moment, Shingen let go. “I’ll see you at dinner.” He grinned. Once she had taken her leave, Shingen turned to Kai. “Well, we made it! They didn’t say what time dinner would be but I’m sure they’ll let us know.” He smiled. “I’ll probably shower and relax until then.” Shingen rubbed the back of his head and looked down the hall. “Did you want me to come get you? Or did you want to skip dinner altogether? I mean, I could bring you back something?” He looked down to her curiously, giving her an out in case she wanted to rest instead. There was no telling what kind of emotional roller coaster of a dinner it was going to be and he wanted to make Kai as comfortable as possible. The estate wasn’t a five star hotel or anything but he cared about the little things, personally, and could probably throw his weight around for some special favors.

She was understanding Shingen- or at least she thought she was understanding him so she didn't push the subject any further and let the situation with his parents unfold naturally. However, Kai’s cheeks flushed a soft pink at Hajime’s words and she immediately dropped her gaze to the floor, fiddling with the hem of her sleeve. Important work? Good people? That felt way too generous. She wasn’t some grand mage or noble warrior—she was just Kai, a girl who still got lost in new places and tripped over her own feet when she wasn’t paying attention.

“O-Oh, I wouldn’t say that,” she mumbled, fiddling with her bangs- a nervous habit. “Shingen’s the one doing all the important stuff. I-I'm just tagging along.” She peeked up at Hajime, her cinnamon-colored eyes warm but uncertain. The idea that anyone would think she was actually supporting Shingen in any meaningful way was… kind of overwhelming. Still, the sincerity in Hajime’s voice made her chest feel tight in a way she didn’t quite know how to describe.

“But, um… I’m really glad I could come,” she added quickly, shifting her weight from foot to foot. “He’s been really kind to me, so—uh—I just want to return the favor however I can.” She bit the inside of her cheek, mentally cringing at how awkward she sounded. Why was it so hard to take a compliment?! Thankfully things shifted to his grandparents and then a guided walk toward their rooms after that.

Kai tried to keep her expression as neutral as possible, but the moment she stepped inside the estate, her brain was already short-circuiting. This was straight out of a shoujo manga. The beautifully polished wood, the soft glow of the paper lanterns, the sliding doors, the garden view. It was everything she had ever imagined when she daydreamed about traditional homes in her favorite stories. She half-expected a childhood-friend-turned-love-interest to dramatically slide open a door and charge at her, staking her territory over Shingen as his future bride!

Her fingers twitched with the urge to clasp her cheeks in delight and maybe dread if she ended up actually confronted by a childhood sweetheart. Oh gosh- what was she even thinking about right then?! She fought down all her silly fan girl urges and the way her imagination spun ridiculous tales. Now was not the time to be a weirdo, Kai. Take a deep breath. She inhaled slowly, 1, 2, 3, 4, held it, and let it out at the same rate before she adjusted her thick frames and tucked a loose strand of thick brown hair behind her ear.
Just stay focused on Shingen’s family.

When his mother showed her the room, Kai bowed deeply, her warm cinnamon-colored eyes shimmering with appreciation. “Thank you so much for your hospitality. This is… absolutely beautiful.” It was way more spacious and lavish than her own room, which was a small 9 x 11 with a bathroom she had to share with the twins and her elder brother at college when he was home.
She managed to keep her voice even, though inside she was squealing. Then Hajime mentioned preparing dinner, Kai hesitated for a moment before speaking up.

“Um, actually… if it’s not too much trouble, would you mind if I helped in the kitchen?” She clasped her hands together in front of her, standing up a little straighter despite her petite frame. “I help out at my family’s bakery, so I’m not bad at cooking and I’d love to learn something new while I’m here.” Of course Kai really did enjoy cooking—but more importantly, she needed something to keep her hands busy before she embarrassed herself further and that was the one place she was sure to settle in naturally.

Hajime shook her head quickly and smiled as if embarrassed. “I couldn’t have a guest be put to work in the kitchen, of all places!” She said politely. Shingen couldn’t help but feel a little pride in Kai. She truly was a hard worker, and selfless enough to give away what she worked so hard to make. It brought him back to the first time they met. “It’s ok, mom. It’s actually part of her skillset. You should try some of her cookies. They’ll change your life!” He grinned.

The older woman lit up just like Shingen, revealing where he got his smile. “Really? It’s been some time since we last had cookies. But since you do come from America, maybe we can learn something too. It would be an honor to have you help us.” “Alright, then.” Shingen said looking at the two. “I’ll make sure our luggage gets to our rooms and all that. And I’ll see you at dinner?” He asked his mother before lingering on Kai. He wondered if this was her way of contributing, going off what had happened at the doctor’s house. Shingen knew she had a constant drive to be a provider and not simply a passenger.

The virtue of selfless service would no doubt get her far. And it always had the welcome effect of motivating others of the same inclination, picking up the slack wherever it is. For Shingen, it makes him want to take over everything and let Kai relax but Kanna’s words still hung over his head, keeping that controlling side of him in check.

Kai’s eyes widened slightly at Hajime’s sudden insistence, her hands flying up in a flustered little wave. “Oh! I—I didn’t mean to imply I thought you needed help or anything! I just—um—really like cooking and-” the words were tumbling out before she could smooth them into anything less awkward.

Thankfully Shingen chimed in but it was with a comment raving about her cookies. “Shingen!” she hissed in embarrassment, trying to hide the way her face turned crimson. She gave his sleeve a light tug in protest, her voice dropping to a bashful mumble. “You’re exaggerating…”

Still, when Hajime smiled and granted her permission to learn in the kitchen, Kai’s nerves softened into something warm and fluttery. Her smile crept back as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her eyes shining with a hint of shy pride. “Thank you, I’d really love to.”

She turned briefly to Shingen when he offered to handle the luggage, her expression gentle. “Thank you… and yeah, I’ll see you at dinner.” Her voice softened just a little more as she looked at him a second longer than she needed to, something thoughtful flickering in her gaze. Then she followed after his mother, her soft hair swaying and her steps light.

--------------------

As Kai stepped into the kitchen, her breath caught in her throat. It was alive—every inch humming with purpose, a scene that struck her like a splash of color from the pages of her favorite shoujo manga. The warm scent of soy, grilled fish, dashi, and something sweet and toasty hung thick in the air, curling into her nose like a memory she hadn’t made yet.

The space was deceptively traditional—wide, open floors of polished wood, low counters, and shelves built into the walls with meticulous care. Sliding panel doors allowed natural light to spill in, illuminating every bustling detail. There were no sleek chrome appliances or digital timers here—just handmade knives gleaming under the light, steaming pots clinking with their lids ever so slightly ajar, and rows of fresh produce being cleaned, chopped, or stewed. It wasn’t quiet either, but it wasn't loud the way her bakery was. No one was talking but there was plenty of noise. Servants and cooks in crisp aprons and rolled-up sleeves moved in perfect harmony—grilling, plating, boiling, seasoning. It was a dance choreographed by instinct and repetition. The rhythmic clatter of utensils, the sizzle of food hitting hot pans, the occasional barked instruction from across the room—all of it hit Kai in a wave.

She paused in the doorway, her small fingers curling into the frame as she took it all in, cinnamon gaze darting around, awe plain on her features, her lips parted in a soft breath of wonder.

"Come." Shingen's mother said kindly.

Kai nodded and followed carefully, doing her best not to get in anyone’s way. Compared to the staff’s practiced movements, her dainty steps and curious glances made her feel like she was drifting through the middle of a storm. They approached a tall, older woman at the center of it all. The head chef, Michiko, stood like a general on the battlefield—her salt-and-pepper hair tied back in a no-nonsense bun, sleeves rolled high above her elbows, ladle in hand. She barely looked up, giving orders with subtle nods and short commands, and the entire kitchen shifted around her like clockwork.

“Michiko-san,” Hajime greeted with a polite nod. “This is Kailani, our guest. She expressed much interest in the kitchen, please find something she may help with.”

Michiko raised an eyebrow and finally gave Kai a look—sharp, appraising. Kai stepped forward and bowed quickly, her voice small but earnest. “I—I’d love to help, if that’s okay. I’ve worked in a bakery since I was little and, um… I know this is more formal than I’m used to, but I promise I’ll do my best.”

The chef looked her over once more before giving a curt nod. “You’ll be on prep. Let’s see how you handle your knife. Tie up your hair, wash your hands, and join Sachiko over there.” She gestured to a station in the corner. “She’ll show you what to do.”

"Okay!" Kai exclaimed with determination. As Hajime gave her shoulder a light, reassuring squeeze and took her leave, Kai took a deep breath, she wasn’t just here to watch. She was in it now—woven into the choreography, ready to prove that she could keep up.

Kailani was her usual, bashful self when he praised her cookies. Truth was, her cooking did have the potential to change the outlook of a person’s day. That very might well inspire someone to do something they otherwise might not have done. To Shingen, that was life changing. He smiled as he watched them both go off to join in on the preparations. He returned to his room, letting himself in. He stood there for a moment as he took in the view. It was clearly kept tidy in his time away but everything seemed to be right where he left it all those years ago. Walking over to the corner, he picked up a shamisen from it’s stand and blew on it, getting some of the dust off it’s body before running his hand over it and across the strings. Memories of practicing with his teacher came back to him, the frustration and the uncomfortable chord formations.

Placing the instrument back, he moved on to a longbow hanging on the wall. His combat instructor used Kyudo as a means to learn patience and focus. He could remember pulling back hard on the string and barely being able to hold it long enough to get a good aim in. The lessons still remained with him to that day. Tenugui hung on the walls, personal paintings of his that he had made as a child. They were simple but accentuated where his mind was at that age. One was of open fields of flowers, the sun overlooking the landscape. He called that one “Freedom”. He chuckled when he saw a doll on a shelf across the room where the bed was. He picked it up, a simple doll made of sack cloth and rice but painted and dressed as a warrior.

A glance over to the bed revealed a set of clothing and sandals left for him like his mother had said. Placing his hand on the Haori, he rubbed the material between his fingers, knowing it was the color reserved for the clan head. Shingen took a deep breath and looked out the window which overlooked another garden. Closing his eyes, he let the scent of wood and faint incense join him. I wish it was like before. Wished I didn’t have to go. He opened his eyes to see the breeze shaking the sakura branches outside, casting little shadows across the room. He remembered Aella and the others. The way Mephitis looked when he found him in that bar and how long they all had been running. I can’t be selfish again. Not yet. Shingen then headed back out to bring in all of their luggage.

Sachiko was busy lighting a fire under a pot of oil when Machiko heard her name being called. She looked up in surprise to see the visitor everyone was talking about coming in with Shingen. She grinned politely and bowed curtly and quickly as she was still very much in motion. “Hello! My name is Sachiko, very pleased to meet you." She said. The kitchen was abuzz with the sound of gas burning stoves and knives chopping on thick wooden cutting boards. There were a few stacks of white cubes on a few plates near a cutting board that she gestured towards. “Come and let me show you what we’re making.” She said as they approached the cutting board. Taking one of the large cubes nearby, she placed it on the cutting board and took up the chef’s knife beside it.

“This is for the Agedashi Tofu. It’s already been dried so now we have to get it into nice bite sized pieces.” She said as she demonstrated cutting into the tofu three times sideways before cutting once length wise down the center, leaving eight pieces. “You see?” She asked, turning to Kai before placing the knife on the board. “And I’ll start on the sauce.” She smiled as she moved to the stove next to them and switching on the heat on a saucepan.

Kai stepped closer, her wide brown eyes blinking as she focused on the neat cuts Sachiko made. The hiss of the stove, the clatter of movement, and the scent of simmering broth all surrounded her like a gentle but firm nudge into action.

“Y-Yes, I see!”
she said quickly, her hands already reaching for the next block of tofu, careful not to look clumsy. Her cheeks flushed just a little as she glanced up at Sachiko’s easy confidence, then down again to mimic the pattern. She set the tofu in place with delicate fingers and reached for the knife. “I’ll make sure they’re nice and even. I’ve never made Agedashi Tofu before,” she added softly.

The knife moved with more confidence than her voice, years of bakery prep and knife work guiding her. Her brow furrowed slightly in concentration as she lined up her cuts. “Thank you for letting me help,” she said sincerely, glancing sideways at Sachiko with a small, grateful smile. “It… it’s really exciting to be part of something like this.”

Sachiko gave her a warm nod before turning back to her saucepan. “We’re happy to have you. Just keep those cuts consistent—we’re serving a lot of people tonight.”

Kai focused, her hands steadying as she found a rhythm in the prep work. The tofu gave way easily beneath her blade, and each block became eight tidy squares. As the cutting progressed, she fell into the flow of the kitchen. There was something grounding about it—everyone moving with purpose, communicating in short, efficient phrases. She caught whiffs of dashi broth, ginger, and something fried and savory. Steam fogged a nearby pot lid, and someone behind her was prepping what looked like lotus root.

After finishing the tofu, Kai helped arrange them on a tray to be dusted with starch before frying. Sachiko handed her a small bowl of grated daikon and ginger for garnishing, explaining each step as she went. Kai listened intently, nodding along, and soon she was helping plate finished dishes with a natural delicacy—sprinkling green onions, folding napkins for the bento sets being packed up for the elders, and even taste-testing the dipping sauce at Sachiko’s insistence.

“Good balance?” Sachiko asked.

Kai brightened. “Mm! Just the right mix of savory and sweet.”

Time passed without her realizing, the quiet satisfaction of contributing keeping her anchored. She loved this—the low hum of organized chaos, the shared language of food, the way everyone had a role.

Eventually, as the bustle began to shift from cooking to final plating and preparation for service, a soft voice called from the doorway.

“Kai-chan?” It was Michiko, peeking in with a gentle smile. “The table’s nearly set. Hajime-sama sent me to fetch you so you can freshen up before dinner.”

Kai blinked, glancing around at the neatly plated dishes and trays ready to be carried out. She hadn’t noticed how warm her cheeks had gotten or that a few wisps of her dark hair had come loose from her ponytail.

“Oh—right! Sorry, I didn’t mean to get in the way…” she said, wiping her hands quickly on a towel.

“You weren’t in the way at all,” Sachiko assured her with a little wave. “You did great. Go on—make yourself pretty for dinner.”

Kai gave a bashful little laugh, bowing politely before turning to follow Michiko. Her heart fluttered with the warmth of inclusion and a quiet pride that she’d contributed something meaningful—even if it was just tofu.
