The twilight hour was normally slow. Men were at the nearby eateries, lounging after their long days while indulging in savory foods and drinks. Many of the girls were free, and Nerys was no exception as she entertained herself with a game of solitaire. Cards were easy, the little dots on the face telling her the numbers when she struggled to read the symbols. Anything more would have been too difficult for her to learn.
The door opening made her startle, the cards before her shifting and rendering her game unable to be continued. It didn't matter anyway as the madam called for her. "Nerys! Obediently, she left the cards where they were and flitted over to the madam. The older woman caught her chin in her hand, her thumb running along Nerys's cheek with the closest thing to parental affection she'd ever been offered. Greedily, she leaned into it. "There's our good girl. Someone has requested the best. I trust you to give it to him." Knowing better than to speak back, she gave a small nod. The madam smiled, patting her cheek. "Room three."
She made no other sound than the jewelry on her ankles tinkling together as she padded down the hall. Who was calling on her tonight? Would he be someone she already knew, or someone new? She didn't mind this job, not really. None here treated her as badly as she had been back in Hyouden. Even the worst of her clients would be punished by the madam and her hired help if they got too rough with her. Food was given to her every night. This was a place she didn't need to fear. Something about that brought her great comfort.
While she struggled with reading the numbers, she had learned a small trick to remembering which room was what. Each word had a pattern. And each pattern she had remembered the number for. Three was the blue gemstone room. The room the madam liked to put her in the most, seeing as it was decorated in soft blue pillows and bedding. It was like a theme, knowing that her cold touch was often seen as a commodity in the ever hot deserts of Funkazan. The obvious connection of ice being associated with blue made it something funny for the other girls as well. All of them calling room three Nerys's room.
Her feet stopped before the door, knocking lightly before slowly letting herself in. "Amir," Her tone was light as she spoke. Leaning lightly on the door, unsure what this new suitor would request from her. "May I be of service?" It was a silly question. One she asked coyly. They both knew why he was here, what he had paid for.

A large stein came crashing down on a long wooden table, and light ale splashed leaking down the side of the mug. Four young men were laughing loudly, “Another for the Duke!” one man yelled out to the rightly annoyed barkeep. A large arm pulled a young Enzo into a tight hold, banging his fist onto the table in an attempt to speed up the ale delivery, “Tonight we drown your sorrows… you’re better off without that whore anyway.” Enzo narrowed his eyes, turning his head sharply to glare at the man next to him, “Who-?!” Before he could finish snapping at his friend for calling his ex-lover a whore, another mug was shoved toward him, and the three surrounding men began chanting “Drink! Drink! Drink!” Luckily for fat man, Enzo never turned down a challenge, so he grasped the drink and threw it back, letting the ale rush down his throat, beer dripping down the corner of his mouth.
The young Duke grinned as he slammed the stein on the table- once again, except this time he accidentally did it with a little more force, and the poor mug shattered. Glass bits rained down on himself and his friends, as well as a few unlucky bystanders. His friends laughed thunderously, they thought it was hilarious, “Thatta boy!” One yelled, slapping his hand on Enzo’s back, “He’s just getting started!” Another yelled- not taking into account that they grabbed the attention of a large, tall man, older than Enzo and his friends, and he was making his way toward their table.
“Aye, look it’s the boy who lost the beautiful Elara!”
Enzo’s eyes shot up to meet the man who had just approached them, “And you are?” the young Lord slowly stood up, meeting the mans gaze. “I’m the guy who won,” So this was him? The man Elara was married off to. Enzo wasn’t head over heels for this girl, but he had fun with her and his mother stopped nagging him about marriage when he was with her.
Plus, he just really hated losing. Especially to this ugly fu-
With a sudden movement, Enzo’s fist found the mans face, striking just below his eye. Not much more was said after that. Glasses shattered as patrons of the pub desperately moved away from the brawling men. The Duke was never good at controlling his anger, it had gotten him in trouble numerous times. This wasn’t the first time he was about to be kicked out of a fine drinking establishment. But despite that, it was more important to kick this guys a**. Enzo figured that although they were pretty evenly matched, he could take him. He was younger, more agile, and well-trained. The two were locked in a brutal exchange, fists landing left and right, chin and head and Enzo wasn’t sure where he was punching anymore, he just was. That is until he started feeling some sort of force pulling him back.
Enzo attempted to shove off the men who were trying to break up the fight, but he was outnumbered. Familiar voices were yelling at him, first, they sounded as if they were underwater until finally it was clear that It was his friends’ voices. A warm liquid dripped from his eyebrow, causing him to reach up and touch what the source of it was. ’Great’ Enzo sighed, rubbing his blood between his fingers before he looked at the mess in front of him. It happened again. He should feel bad, the man lying on the ground was clearly concussed, he was slurring his speech and struggling to stand up. The Dukes friends waved off the barkeep who was pleading for them to leave, and led Enzo out of the door. Since young Enzo was still heated, and having trouble calming down, his friends came up with an idea to cool him down. The night didn’t have to end, one had mentioned- then suggested that the best way for Enzo to get over someone is to get under someone else. Unfortunately, it was late, and most of the young women had left the town to head home.
That is how Enzo ended up in a cozy room, with blue pillows and blue bedding- a perfect fit for the young lady he was about to meet. Enzo was… a little nervous, though he would never admit it. He had never been to one of these houses before, but he had heard stories of some of the women who worked in similar places. Some not-so-young, not-so-pretty stories. He wasn’t shallow, but that didn’t mean he didn’t have preferences.
Enzo looked up as he heard a knock at the door, he shuffled a bit on the bed as he waited to see who would walk through the door- and then, he was captivated. The woman who stood before him was beautiful, and that confused him, surely this wasn’t her. She must be the one in charge. His thoughts were interrupted by the girl formally addressing him, "May I be of service?" He was stunned- this was her? The corner of his lip turned slightly upward into a small smirk as he began to study the sight before him.
The man stood and respectfully bowed his head to the beautiful young woman leaning against the door frame, “My lady,” he began while slowly approaching her, his eyes taking in her frame, looking at her as if she were his prey. Enzo stopped when he was a few inches from her, his eyes lingered on her lips before making their way to match her gaze. Her eyes. They were unlike anything he had ever seen- chilling and breathtaking. “What is your name?” He continued, ignoring her previous question of service, “I like to know who I am doing business with.” His grin grew as he leaned forward, placing his arm above her and resting it on the door frame. His body casting a shadow from the flickering candles placed meticulously around the room. He needed to take out his frustrations, and she was perfect.

As he stood and approached her, three things became very clear. Firstly, he was tall. Compared to her many were. But he had to have at least a head on her, though it was difficult to be entirely certain just yet. Secondly, he'd had a rough night. It was written on his face, from the smear of blood that been wiped off of his brow right down to the predatory gaze in his eyes.
“My lady, what is your name?”
Finally, he was the kind of client Nerys preferred the most. The bow he'd given her, the respectful tone. There were a few like him. Ones who didn't look down on her because of the life she had found her way into. They were men with kindness in them who just wanted to fill a lonely night. He was inches from her, closing her in against the door. Not backing away, she pressed her back against the door with a coy little smile. The way he looked at her carried weight. Each searing look something she could almost physically feel until he met her eyes.
It was like she was an oasis in his eyes. His own were beautiful. Vibrant in a way she hadn't seen before. The way they glimmered with some unspoken promise was captivating. “I like to know who I am doing business with.” Leaning over her, his mouth quirked into a smile that told her he liked what he was seeing. It also made it that much easier for her to reach up and gently brush her thumb over the dried smear of blood. The sight didn't phase her. They were near a military camp, and many of the men came in after training to let loose and blow off their pent up steam. Instead it made her heart ache to wonder if he was one of those men. Would she be able to ease his burden?
"Please Amir, call me Nerys." Slowly she let her cold fingers trail down the side of his face, the tan of his skin making how pale her own was that much more apparent. Stepping away from the door, she pressed herself into his chest. Letting the hand that had trailed down his cheek slip under his ear and card into his dark hair, she held his gaze for just a moment.
The shifting of her anklets tinkling together mixed with the soft sounds of their shared breaths as she pushed herself around him. With a soft caress to his cheek she let her fingers glide down his arm before catching his hand and guiding him back towards the bedding. Once they were close enough she spun back to face him, a giggle bubbling out of her when he was leaning over her once more. Now he could more easily claim his prize once the mood hit him.
Leaning into him, she found herself pressing herself onto her toes to lessen the difference in their height. Her hands slid up his chest before tangling in the hair at the base of his neck. This was a gamble. Not every client liked to be kissed. Some found the women here too low to share intimacy with during the act. Normally she would let the client do it first to be sure, but something within her was urging her forward. The way that he had stared so openly at her lips had helped her internal argument. Whether she would openly admit it or not, Nerys wanted to do something for him. Or maybe it was just that he was too handsome to resist.
Their lips were nearly touching when she finally spoke again. "Amir, would you tell me your name?" Her voice was barely a whisper. Some clients didn't like to disclose their names, but part of her hoped he would. For no other reason than that she wanted to know it. Up close she could see the flecks of gold and amber in his eyes. Eyes she was searching for any sign that he didn't want what she was about to do. Finding none, she gently pressed her lips to his. It was a soft kiss. Sweet and innocent. One that he didn't immediately pull away from.
Pulling back, Nerys let her eyes flutter from his lips to meet his eyes. He tasted of ale, giving away what he'd been doing before coming here. Not that she minded. Keeping his gaze she slowly dragged her tongue over her lips, savoring the taste. "What 'business' would you like tonight?" She knew he hadn't answered her first question, yet she found herself asking anyway. This was his evening. She would give him what he wanted.

There was something about the way she pressed her back against the door that triggered something in Enzo, almost feral. The way she was looking up at him, meeting his gaze, giving him that little coquettish smile. He began moving closer to her when she reached up and put her thumb over his brow- almost immediately putting him at ease. Such a small gesture, but her touch was gentle, something the young Duke had not been used to. Enzo was a dominant man, in everyday life and especially in bed. It was not often that he allowed whomever he was sleeping with to touch him. It wasn’t a conscious move, he never even thought about it, and it wasn’t like women hadn't tried. It’s just that when they did, he was quick to grab their wrist moving their hand away.
So, when her fingers trailed down the side of his face, Enzo almost missed her name. “Nerys,” he repeated, his voice softer now- though still a little gravelly from the drinking. “It’s lovely to meet you.” At the start of the inviting encounter this evening, the redness on his face could have been confused for the heavy drinking that occurred earlier that night. But there was no mistaking the shade darkening the moment that Nerys stepped off the wall and pressed into him. Her touch was chilling, enough to cool down his gradually warming face- the feeling of her fingers tangling into his hair made him let out a heavy breath. One he didn’t realize he had been holding.
Her eyes.
Her eyes continued to pull him in, the way she held his gaze he felt like there was a force keeping him from breaking it. The sound of her anklets clinking refocused him, his pupils dilated as she moved her cool hand from his cheek down to his arm. Tough guy Enzo was putty. As he was guided to the bed Enzo found himself taking this opportunity to let his eyes wander once again. Her body was on full display through the thin fabric covering her, “Enzo,” There was no hesitation in his answer, he wanted her to know- no, he needed her to know his name. They hadn’t even gone further than light touching and yet he wanted her to know him, to remember him.
His gaze matched hers as she seemed to search for permission to do something, although in his mind, she didn’t need it, and never would. Thankfully, she understood- her lips were soft, as soft as he had imagined, no, softer, and they had an iciness that he had never experienced before. The kiss ended quicker than he had hoped for, but watching her drag her tongue over her lips was a nice sight- so he couldn’t complain, but he wanted more.
"What 'business' would you like tonight?"
Enzo’s lips curled up into an impish grin as his hand automatically moved to her hip. His fingers gently pinched and pulled at the loose fabric- fabric that teased him and begged to be ripped off. Gently, he wrapped his free hand around her neck, his thumb delicately stroking the side of her jaw- tilting her head ever so lightly. His hands were large compared to her face, so much so that he barely had to move his hand to allow his thumb to move from her jaw to her bottom lip, brushing against it and threatening to enter her mouth at any moment. For a second time, the young lord ignored Nerys’ question, he only had one thing on his mind. His hand slid under her chin, tilting her head up to him as he moved in to touch her lips to his once again. His kiss was, less innocent- to say the least, and while he was enjoying her tongue, he moved her back gently onto the bedding. Against his raging instinct, he paused and took a second to look at her, “I hope this is okay.” He knew where he was, he knew what this business was, he knew what he paid for, but he was still a gentleman, and he didn’t want to frighten her. If she did not want to continue, he wouldn’t push- but he hoped that was not the case.

  A Few Days Later...
“Come back and see me again?”
Gentle words from a beautiful woman, a woman who hadn't left the young Dukes mind since their evening spent together a few nights ago. Enzo leaned back on a large bench in the stables, it wasn't common for royals to be hanging around the horses but he always felt calm around the animals. His eyes burned holes through the ceiling, as he let out a heavy sigh and pushed his hand through his hair, he couldn't get Nerys out of his head.
The prior evening, Enzo had gone out drinking again with his friends. His father pissed him off again and the only way he knew how to deal with it was to drown his emotions in booze, just so he wouldn't blow up on him. His temper was short, and his dad knew which buttons to press to bring it out of him. His family wanted him to find someone he could marry, and for a while he was able to convince them that Elara was it and they wouldn't have to worry about it. Since she was married off the topic came bubbling back up. However, thanks to the looming war he was able to put the "marriage topic" on the back burner, but it didn't stop the tension within the family.
The Dukes head pounded, he muttered shoving his head in his palms, clutching it in hopes he could squeeze the hangover away, but no luck. The old milk-made who had worked for the family for so long that Enzo thought she was an immortal witch cackled at the sight of him, chills ran down his back at her voice. "Get up and go to the market and get some ginger root and feverfew, mix it in some hot water and drink it as a tea, you'll feel better in no time," He sighed, the old woman did know what she was talking about... of course the witch would know. Enzo squinted at the loyal milk-made and forced a smile, "Thank you..." His voice was low, and he was clearly not in the best spirits, but the young Duke stood, using his arm to support his body against the wall before slowly moving outside of the stable towards the market.
He rarely went to the market, especially during the day, if he went to town it was for the taverns and well, that was it. Enzo shuffled through the townspeople, thankfully no one recognized him because he wasn't in his "royal garments." He preferred it that way, people treated him like he was normal, he always hated too much attention. It wasn't long before Enzo realized he didn't know where he was going, every stall looked the same to him. He sighed, he felt like he was in a huge maze, and there were so many people and his head was pounding and well, it was awful. Enzo put his hand over his stomach as it turned menacingly, threatening to greet the folks shopping peacefully around him.
“Amir Enzo?”
His mind cleared instantly, the only thing he could hear was that voice. Enzo shifted slightly so he could look in the direction of the voice, his heart pounded deep in his chest. Familiar icy blue eyes looked into his, a warm smile planted on her face. She stuck out like a beam from a lighthouse, her soft pale skin and light hair amongst the others, it was undeniably her. "Lady Nerys," He attempted to clear his throat but it still came out rough. He smiled back at her, his face tinted with a light red streak as images of their night spent together flashed through his head. "I uh," he paused, hating that for the second time she's seeing him he's recovering from another hard night. "I'm not feeling the best so I came here to find something to help soothe my stomach..." Moving his hand, he rubbed the back of his neck out of slight embarrassment.
As she started towards him he found himself moving forward wanting to meet her as quick as possible, ignoring the small bout of dizziness. When he approached her he wanted to wrap his arms around her- like they were not only lovers but close friends, however the thought of making her uncomfortable by crossing a boundary caused him to hesitate. What if she didn't want to see her "clients" out and about? If she didn't would she have called out to him? Enzo stuck his hand in his pocket and managed a charming grin, pushing doubtful thoughts out of his head. "It's so good to see you I-" he hesitated once more, nerves unsettling his stomach somehow more than it already was, "-I've been thinking about you..." He softened his voice as he looked down at her, studying her frame in the sunlight- she took his breath away.
Not wanting it to be a short interaction, Enzo quickly thought of a plan to spend some time with her, "I don't want to intrude on your day but would you be able to help me find some ingredients I need?" His gaze melted into her, maybe he could steal her for the day, would she be allowed? He wouldn't want to get her in trouble but he was feeling selfish.

The most polite way she could think to phrase it was that he looked a little green around his gills. Even worse his voice wasn't allowing him to hide it. The rasp was far too prominent. Bringing her hand up to catch a giggle, she watched him try to dance around any boundary she might have. It was nice. Just how open and expressive he was as he made every effort to respect her in a way that other men had not. It was hard to say if it was due to the fact that Enzo wasn't feeling well, but every thought seemed to flicker through his actions. Every hesitation that much more noticeable.
Leaning into him, the hand that had caught her giggle reached up to press against his forehead. Warm, he was definitely warm. Though wasn't that to be expected from the man who had burned a hole into the bed under her? But it wasn't an alarming sort of warmth. "You don't feel feverish, Amir." Slowly she let it drift down the side of his face to let her cool skin help him. Maybe it was a headache from too much drinking. It was easy to remember the way he'd tasted when he had come to her, like he was fresh out of the nearest drinking establishment.
At his question, she couldn't help but worry her lip. The paper in her other hand had been forgotten for just a moment. Now it had been slammed back into the forefront of her mind. She'd been here on a mission of her own, and one that she needed to complete. But she wasn't confident in her ability to do so. "I am happy to try to help you, Amir Enzo." Her fingers slipped from his face and back down to dance along the edges of the list in a nervous flutter. Her heartbeat quickened, worried that he would have a problem with what she was about to ask him.
No.
Not Enzo.
They had only met once before this, but a man who had been so gentle with her? A man that even now seemed so shy and genuine? He would not reprimand her. Or, at least, she hoped he would not. "However," Nerys started, a shy edge to her voice. Absently she pulled the paper up to hide some of her face, like it would protect her if he rebuffed her. Not that he would. Some of it was also just embarrassment. "I would like a favor from you in exchange. I..." Her naturally quiet voice faded out quickly, like a candle being blown out. For a moment she considered if this was something she wanted to admit to him.
But then, she'd already come this far, hadn't she? Pulling the paper away from her face, Nerys held it out to Enzo. Between her size and what she was about to ask him she couldn't help almost feeling like a child. "I cannot read this. I don't know what I've been sent out to buy." Worry knit her brow together as she managed to meet his gaze. "Would you mind helping me? I can't go back without everything."

Gods, She was cute.
When she leaned into him, he swore he could hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears. He took this moment to fall into her cool touch, her hand resting on his forehead before gracefully moving down his face. Hairs on the back of his neck prickled, as goosebumps dotted his skin. His head tilted slightly, the hood of his tunic had fallen to his shoulders at this point, but he didn’t notice, nor did he really care. The cowl was really there just to keep the sun from his face, the light was not his friend right now. His lips turned up into a small smile when she mentioned that she didn’t think he had a fever. He knew he ran hot, and for her to be able to tell it wasn’t abnormal meant something to him. Or, there was the possibility he was a terrible liar and she knew he was hungover. He chose to believe the latter.
Even though she agreed to help, he couldn’t help but notice there was a hint of nervousness to her voice. He watched as she played with the edges of the list, further proving his point that there was something wrong. He moved his hand from his side to her arm, gently touching her to try and ease any anxiety. Did he do something wrong? His heart thumped again, louder this time. The last thing he wanted to do was make her uncomfortable. The townfolk began funneling into the market, more foot traffic to avoid. Enzo delicately directed the two of them as best as he could out of their way, allowing a clear path for people to continue with their shopping.
“Anything you need, Lady Nerys,” Before moving his hand back to his side, he pulled the corner of the list down softly with his finger, so he could look her in the eyes as he spoke. What could possibly be wrong? The effects from the night before twisted and turned in his stomach, causing him to pull his hand back and place it on his stomach.
The paper moved from her face and he smiled gently, so this was the reason why she seemed so tense. He sighed a breath of relief while taking the paper from her. He was grateful, his brain stopped focusing on his stomach, and Nerys wasn’t upset with him. “How did you know I love a shopping list?” He tried lightening the moment with a little joke, in his mind she had no reason to be embarrassed. Although, he couldn’t help but feel upset for her, why hadn't anyone taught her how to read? Keeping a kind smile, Enzo moved his hand to the side of her face and used his thumb to gently rub her cheek. She made him so soft, his usual hardened personality was nonexistent with her.
“First thing’s first,” his gaze redirected from hers to the small list now in his possession. The items were not was he was expecting. He read over a few ingredients he that he recognized, honey, pomegranate seeds, and candies. Then one he was not so sure about, ’Silphium? He cocked an eyebrow, what a strange list. But it wasn’t his job to find them, it was his job to read, and of course carry everything. He was a gentleman. After realizing he had been distracted, he continued, “There’s a few food ingredients here, like honey, some seeds, various herbs…candy and Silph..ium?” He paused again, unsure if he pronounced it correctly, he looked at her for confirmation.
At the bottom of the list, written as if it was a last minute item, read "linens". Enzo couldn’t help but wonder if they needed new linens because of him. Last time they met he didn’t exactly leave the place spotless. "Also, it looks like you need new linens," his face flushed into a deep red, more obvious to the eye thanks to his hangover giving him have a pale complexion, "Is that because I might have... messed up the last ones?" Actually, he sort of destroyed the last ones, including the bed. If these items were coming out of her pocket, he wouldn’t allow her to pay for them. He cleared his throat, “Where would you like to start first?” After folding the list in half, he met her gaze with his, he was glad he ran into her, the day started out as s**t, but just being in her orbit made him forget he ever felt sick in the first place. His family didn’t care where he was, he was needed for anything that he knew of, so this was his chance to get to know her in a way he had been wanting to since their first meeting.

Relief eased through her with his joke. It had been so bold to ask a client for help. Ex-client? no, she would still consider him a client for now. Regardless of what he was, Nerys knew that many preferred to keep their dealings with her kind under the shade of dusk. Yet Enzo almost seemed excited to see her. Didn't mind her fingers brushing over his face, no he leaned into it.
As he read off her items Nerys nodded along. Ah, so it was just a normal restock. Made sense. Oh how she wished the Madam had just told her as much instead of sending her out with a list. Embarrassment filtered through her when he mentioned the main ingredient in the concoction she'd drank the morning after he'd finished inside of her. Enzo looked to her for confirmation on how to pronounce it, which she could only offer him a small nod.
Then his voice faltered at the mention of linens. A small giggle bubbled out of her, one she caught in the crook of her fingers. "Amir, it is bold of you to assume you are the only man who has burnt holes in our sheets." Her words had been light, hoping to mask the fact that this time it had in fact been him that put that particular item on the list. Smiling up at the giant of a man, she continued. "It's fairly common for us to have to replace them. It's something the Madam has worked into the budget, well I think that's how it works. Frankly, that's above my station. But please don't let yourself worry about it."
At his question of where to start, she paused for a moment to catch her bearings. She knew sort of where she was, though she also wasn't known for having the best sense of direction. "I believe the apothecary is closest. We could start there." Nerys peered down the ally, before realizing maybe it was a few more stalls down than she thought. It almost seemed like they had gotten themselves into a situation of the blind leading the blind.
Then she looked back to her tall companion, realizing his hood had tumbled off of his head. "Oh, here. Let me..." Instead of finishing the thought, she moved. Gathering herself up to her tiptoes, her hands trailed Enzo's shoulders to pull the fabric back up and over his head. "There. That should help for now." Her hands lingered, pressing into his chest through his top as she realized he'd ashed for help and she didn't even know what he was looking for. If it was on the way, it would be a waste to backtrack. "Actually, please tell me what you are looking for. I would hate to drag you all over when you aren't feeling well." Concern was evident on her face as she finally met his eyes again.

A tinge of jealousy flashed through him at the mention of other men that could have ruined the linens. He knew that Nerys was not the only one who used that room, but even if she was, she had to, it was her job. A large grin formed on his face as he mentally pushed down his greediness, plus, her giggle helped, “It was wrong for me to assume, Lady Nerys.” He wasn’t all that surprised over his moment of possessiveness, it was a trait he acquired throughout his years. When he actually wanted someone, he wanted them all to himself. He could be very selfish, that and his short fuse got him in trouble in the past. But the past was exactly that— the past. He had since tried working on it, he was a gentleman first and foremost. But something about this woman, she had him wrapped around her delicate finger.
The Madam must be a smart woman, she also seemed to treat them well, or at least he hoped. He scanned the woman in front of him, Nerys seemed healthy and content, would she tell him otherwise? “The apothecary, huh?” Enzo followed her gaze to the alleyway, a few people were slumped against the wall, they must have retreated to the shadows to escape the sun. When he refocused on the petite woman, he noticed a tad bit of confusion on her face.
Although he wasn’t familiar with the market, he was good at locating pretty much anything he needed. “You know I think you’re right,” He squinted his eyes and looked over the crowd of townspeople, luckily his height made it easy for him. He pointed down the foot path, “I think I see the sign.” Or he hoped, he didn’t have the best eyesight, but he was sure he could make out some of the letters from their distance. He turned to face Nerys just as she leaned into him, in one smooth movement his hand found her bare waist. He remained unmoving while she fixed his hood, then grazed his fingers gently from her side to her lower back, instinctively moving her body closer to his. He inhaled and exhaled deeply, watching her hands rise and fall with his chest, he didn’t even realize she had fixed his hood until she said something.
Enzo looked down at her, his gaze burning into hers just for a moment before he loosened his hold and let go. He turned his head to look around, he didn’t think about how inappropriate that could have been, even if it was only a subtle touch. He didn’t want to make her uncomfortable, and public affection was looked down upon unless you were married, and even then it was considered unfitting. But, thankfully from the looks of it the town-folk were too busy shopping to pay attention to two people off to the side.
He lowered his head in respect to her for fixing his attire, “Thank you, I didn’t even notice it had fallen.” It did help, it was keeping the heat off of him, in normal cases the sun wouldn’t bother him as much but the day was unusually hot. He smiled when she offered to help him find what he needed, but by the sound of it, they were needing to go same place, he knew he needed ginger and there was something else... but it escaped his mind. He didn’t care about feeling sick as long as he got to spend more time with her. Enzo brought the folded list up then lightly tapped it once on her head, “Please do not worry about me, I am happy to come along.” His eyes softened after seeing that she really was concerned, he gently touched the side of her face with his free hand, while he shoved the list into a pocket. He had touched her twice now, was it too much to do in public? Could she get in trouble?
He really couldn’t help himself, not after the night they had spent with each other. “Really, I feel fine. I think I need ginger, which we can find at the apothecary, right?” He wanted her to feel like she wasn’t burdening him, because she hadn't been. But he also knew just saying he didn’t mind would not work on her. He lightly tapped her jaw with his thumb as his arm lowered back to his side before he broke his gaze and moved off of the side path. People flowed around him like water, yet he stayed perfectly in place.
Then Enzo stuck his arm out, seeing an opportunity, “It is quite busy today, I’d hate to lose you in the mix,” He wiggled his elbow playfully, leaving an opening between his arm and body. “Shall we continue, Lady Nerys?”

All she could offer him was a soft smile as he pulled her into him, his hands running a burning path from her exposed waist to her back. Enzo's embrace was gentle. This may have only been their second meeting, but the man before her was proving to be far more softhearted that expected. In the best possible way. "I don't think you've done anything wrong." If anything it was only the natural reaction a first time customer with those kinds of powers would have. Not only that, but he hadn't gotten angry with her bold manner when she pointed out that he wouldn't have been the first or only customer who had burnt sheets or more.
Red eyes met hers, an ember in them that seemed ready to spark at any moment. Then his hands let her go. While she found herself missing his touch, they were in public. It wasn't exactly appropriate for the opposite sex to touch so much out and about like this. A flush rose to her cheeks, realizing that she had put him in a compromising position. Whatever downwards spiral she'd been about to get lost in was interrupted with the light tap of paper to her forehead. Eyes refocusing, she watched his eyes soften as he reassured her. Knitting her eyebrows together, it was impossible to deny that he would help her. Nerys was easily lost and having another set of eyes that could read the signs would be far more helpful that she could express. "Only if you are sure." There was hesitance in her voice, but it was quickly dispelled with the touch of his hand on her cheek. The slow drag of his fingers down her jaw before his hand dropped away from her silenced any protest she could have offered.
Taking the arm that was offered to her, Nerys's head darted around to make sure that no one was giving the lord any scathing looks. "I would hate to be lost." There was a woman or two that looked at her with disdain for their open displays of affection, but that was the worst of it. That she could deal with, it was nearly impossible to sully the reputation of someone with her profession any more than it already was. Satisfied, she looked up at Enzo. "Ginger? Yes Amir, you should be able to get it at the apothecary." What he had said wasn't lost on her, noticing that he wasn't entirely sure exactly what he had come for. Pressing her lips together for a moment, Nerys mulled over if she should bring up his uncertainty. Finally she let them part to ask. "If you tell me what you are trying to make, maybe I could help you in return. Though I cannot promise I will know."
Fussing her lip as they stopped before what she could only assume was the apothecary, she looked up to Enzo. "I cannot thank you enough, after all. I..." Her voice trailed off for a moment, looking up at the sign with curling letters that meant absolutely nothing to her. "I am not particularly good with directions and I cannot read. The madam trusts me as she knows I have no desire to leave, but it does make tasks like this nearly impossible for me." Before entering the establishment Nerys reluctantly pulled her hands free of his arm.
Thankfully, he had found them the right building. This hadn't been the first time that she had been sent out for items. Last time it had involved a lot more begging for help in the streets to find the places she was looking for before a kindhearted grandmother had pointed her in the right direction. But now that she was here she recognized the shopkeeper. "Hello!" Her tone was bright as she addressed the man. "I am picking up the order for Lady Yusra?" Only now when she went to hand him the note for her madam did Nerys notice she didn't have it. Turning back, her voice rang out. "Amir Enzo, do you still have the list?"

Her hands were gentle when she took his arm, he hoped he wasn’t pushing it with these small gestures. At this point he didn’t care if people recognized him with her, if anything maybe it would be a good thing, perhaps the rumor of him seeing someone would keep his mother from nagging him about marriage prospects. He did care however, about how she felt, he never wanted to put her in a position that could get her in trouble or make her uncomfortable. So, for now, he would be a little more subtle.
He flashed a grin at the small woman, “I appreciate your help Lady Nerys, I have never made a concoction of any sort before,” To bring attention to the fact that he wasn’t sure of what he was doing was something that did not often happen. The people who worked for his family were told never to question to Duke, so to hear Nerys speak so nonchalantly about it made him warm to her even more. “I was pretty nauseous this morning, so I was told to find items to help with an ill stomach.” Although he was feeling much better than he had earlier that morning, the uneasy swirling in his stomach still plagued him. In the future perhaps he should take it easy on the ale, except for the fact that his family made it so damn hard at times.
“I cannot thank you enough, after all. I…”
Enzo was grateful that he had found the correct building, the sign hung just above the door. His eyes softened at her words, if there was a way for him to help, he wanted to do so. ‘I could take her to the library, I am sure I could convince father to allow it.’ He watched her slender frame disappear into the establishment before letting out a quiet breath. There was no way, despite what he wanted or even if he could convince his father, he knew his mother would never allow a woman of her status to enter the Palace grounds at all.
The shop was small, its shelves were lined with glass jars, tinctures and vials that shimmered in the low light from the afternoon sun. He stood a few steps behind Nerys, pretending to scan the shelves for the items he had needed, but his eyes were fixed on her. He often got lost in the way she moved, how the soft curve of her waist looked in her dress, or how her blue eyes resembled crystal-like orbs in the sunlight. ‘I could pay her,’ Lost in his thoughts, he blindly picked up a brown root, that smelled warm and spicy, with a slight hint of sweetness. If he came into the brothel as a costumer, what was stopping him from teaching her how to read?
“The list?” It took him a moment before he knew what she was asking for, too distracted by his plans, too distracted to realize that his identity was just thrown out there for someone to report back to his family if they recognized the name. Enzo searched his pocket before coming up with the folder paper—he held it up proudly as he walked toward her and the shopkeeper. Now standing beside her, he reached out to hand her the list, feeling the faint coolness of her porcelain skin under his as his fingers gently grazed against hers. “Happy to help, Lady Nerys,” Glancing down to smile at her, he allowed his eyes to betray him as they locked onto her parted lips.
Gods.
Enzo shifted slightly, they had only spent one night together, but her absence made the longing unbearable, and for a moment he had almost forgotten where they were. He nodded his head respectfully to the shop keep before stepping away to the other side of the store, looking for anything to distract him. When he had the chance, he would offer up his teaching services, not only would it be a perfect way for them to spend time together again, but there was no chance that the Madam could deny a paying costume. She did not have to know that he was not paying her for her services.

Confusion flittered across his face, scrunching it in a way that she couldn't help but find adorable. Catching a giggle in her hands, she took the offered list from him. The warm brush of his skin was enough to ground her in the moment. "Many thanks, Amir."
As she turned back to the shop keeper, a knowing look was in his eyes. One she returned with a coy smile. "I know we need the usual honey, sliphium, and pomegrante. I believe Lady Yusra mentioned something about headaches. Could you please make sure she added the medicine to the list?" A small glimmer of worry passed through her eyes as she looked up at the man she'd been coming to see for years. "If not, would you please include it? Oh! And ginger for my friend, please." For a long time she had been the easy one to dispatch from the house, especially once the madam had learned she was less likely to run than the other girls. Once she had debuted, it had been far more rare for her to go out on these trips despite enjoying them. Her popularity was great enough that she usually kept a steady flow of customers to keep her busy.
It had also meant that despite her trouble with directions, many of the shop keepers had known her since she was an awkward thirteen year old stumbling through the Funkazan tongue to try to run her errands. "Little Nerys," His words filtered back to her as he turned to begin measuring the ingredients for her. "To think I would see the day." Color flooded her cheeks, not having expected the comment from him. Eyes darting back to Enzo, she hoped he wouldn't take offense to the shopkeeper's teasing.
"Ammu," As she spoke her brows knit into a halfhearted scolding look. "Did you forget your manners with your wife this morning?" The question earned her a laugh from the older man, but not an answer. It had apparently been enough to quiet him as he finished his work. For a moment Nerys thought she had weathered the worst of the shopkeeper's teasing. Then he turned to give her the shopping she had come for. As she placed a handful of Funkazan rounds into his hands, his eyes snaked up to catch Enzo's. "Just make sure to take care of this one. Nerys is our good girl."
Nearly dropping what she had come for as she slipped it into her satchel, a hot blush skittered up over her ears and down her chest. Managing to get her ingredients into her bag without dropping anything, her feet pulled her to Enzo as quickly as she could while still being respectable. Her hands wrapped around his arm as she all but tugged him out of the apothecary, the affectionate chuckle of the shopkeeper ringing out behind her.
Once they were out of the building it took her a moment to catch herself. Untwining from him so that they could at least look a little respectable, her hand stayed in the crook of his elbow. "I'm so sorry Amir, please ignore him." Unable to look up at him, she caught herself watching the crowd as bodies parted around them. It was similar to the way a river flowed around water. "He's known me since I was a child and likes to tease."

He hadn’t realized it but he was holding his breath, her giggle, her ******** giggle was so cute. His eyes lightened as he continued to stare at her while she spoke to the shop keep, the knowing look that he gave Nerys flew right above him. He wasn’t typically so unobservant, but he couldn’t help himself when he was around her. She was captivating. He did however catch when she brought up the ginger though, and he was grateful, he didn’t even think to just ask the shop keeper to grab these items for him. Thank the Gods for her. He was worthless in the situation clearly.
Enzo took a step forward to the other side of the counter, where other herbs—he thinks—sat untouched. He lazily started grabbing a few, putting them up to his face to investigate them. Truly, he had never seen so many products like the ones there were currently surrounded by. Usually, these things were in the kitchen and well, he barely set foot in there unless he was told to, and that never happened. The duke lifted up what resembled dried berries and leaves, he sniffed it subtly, it smelled like mint—maybe, and kind of reminded him of his mother.
His eyes floated back to the shop keeper as he spoke to Nerys, his eyebrows pushing together as he tried to figure out what he meant, “to think I would see the day.” Enzo picked up another dried fruit, this one smelled of oranges, or some sort of citrus. He wondered if the older man knew who he was, maybe that is what he meant. The idea of that didn’t bother him, in fact he didn’t care at all. He wasn’t ashamed of the woman he was spending his time with, in fact all he wanted to do was show her off. He felt unbelievably lucky to even be in her presence. Someone so beautiful, with him? A small smile pulled at his lips, his gaze drifting secretly between her and the fruits.
Her scolding was cute, she clearly knew this man personally and the interaction made his smile only grow. Seeing her in this scenario was nice, he felt normal, he felt like in another life she could be his, and they were here doing their daily shopping for their home. He sighed quietly, such a silly fantasy to be having about someone he only just met. But was it really?
“Just make sure to take care of this one. Nerys is our good girl.”
Enzo’s attention snapped to the man looking directly at him, it was a little intimidating. Not in a dangerous way of course, but in more of a fatherly way-- which he supposed oculd actually be dangerous... He swallowed nervously, something he almost never felt, and it took him by surprise. His head tilted down in a show of respect to the older man, a smile reappearing when he caught the blush on Nerys in the corner of his eye. “I promise to take care of her, sir…” Crimson eyes floated down to the stunning woman, “…For as long as she allows me to.” He exhaled quietly, even if she did not want him to, he knew he would still watch out for her, still care, even from a distance.
Her arm wrapped around his and a laugh escaped him as she desperately pulled him out of the apothecary. He continued quietly chuckling to himself until she stopped their movement to apologize, “No. I’m sorry Lady Nerys, but I will do not such thing.” His smile grew into a warm grin as he pulled her closer using the arm she was still holding on to. “He cares about you, and I will never ignore someone like that.” The crowd flowed steadily, but to him in this moment, they were nothing but the wind, all he wanted to do was kiss her, he didn’t care where they were.
So, he did.
The duke turned his body, so he was better facing her before using his free hand to find the side of her face, then without hesitation he closed the short gap between them. Memories of their shared evening flooded into his mind the moment his lips met her familiar, cool to the touch, soft lips. He knew he shouldn’t push it into anything deeper for they were in public, but he had been thinking of kissing her since he found her in the crowd. After a moment he pulled back, his eyes staying glued to hers, ignoring whatever glances they may have received from the town folk. “I apologize, but I’ve been thinking of doing that all day.” He took a step back, giving her any space she may have wanted, his hand lingered on her face for a second longer before he let it fall to his side. He thought kissing her would temporarily quench his thirst, but now he only wanted more of her.
