It was beneath the trees, with the soft loamy earth under his claws and the rich scent of decaying leaves, that Raff was at his most comfortable. Which was convenient, considering this was to be his new home. His new domain. This woodland was his future.

The werewolf’s chest immediately swelled with a sense of pride as he lifted his nose, taking in all the various smells, carefully memorizing them. His ears perked, listening to the birds as they sang, and the squirrels as they chattered in the treetops.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves left dappled markings across his hide. He was warm and content.

Yes, this would be perfect.

Kiche stepped softly along the autumn foliage as she padded quietly thru the sunlit forest. Her pace was leisurely, and she calmly drifted along the wooded path, wandering between the fall flowers that nodded sleepily along its border, stopping casually to tuck one behind her ear. With a wistful look in her emerald eyes, she was snapped out of the memories of her family long-gone, by the scent of a wolf she didn't recognize. In her territory. Slowly she felt her body temperature rise, wondering who had the audacity to intrude in her pack's domain and not introduce themselves... Kiche begun following the new musky odor, noting the hint of fox hide and..bone?

With how intently he had been focusing on all the scents and smells in his surroundings, Raff hadn’t missed the presence of other wolves. Which was perfect. He’d heard tales of the Woodland Pack, as well as many others. His mother had told him his lineage hailed back to these lands from many generations ago, and once he’d grown tired of wandering, it had felt natural to find somewhere to settle.

And so why not return to somewhere he’d always dreamed of?

Now that he was here, he certainly felt at peace.

But Raff wasn’t a stupid wolf. You didn’t get to adulthood as a werewolf without knowing how to not get yourself in too much trouble. He had the bulk and the strength to settle fights easily but he certainly didn’t want to start his new life by forcing his way in and causing a ruckus. Oh no. This would be done right.

He planted his butt and lifted his head to the sky, unleashing a deep howl that wound its way through the trees, seeking the pack members who lived there. It was an announcement of his presence and he hoped they would answer.

Kiche found herself stopping suddenly in her tracks as a howl pierced the stillness of the woods. So, they did understand pack traditions after all? The alpha was growing more and more curious by the second. Her long muscular legs broke out into a run, her paws moving so quickly they hardly made a sound as she sprinted towards the source of the sound. Trusting her nose, she crept into the dense brush that encircled the sunny clearing and crouched there for a moment in silence as she observed. The musky odor grew stronger and the nuances of the scent were becoming clearer to her. Something about the smell felt...ancient? But familiar, somehow. Parting the bushes, Kiche peeked thru to see a tall and sturdy looking wolf, his honey fur striped with dark mahogany, and she watched him with curiosity to see what he might do next. Would he notice her presence there? He seemed to be at ease in the current moment, and she wasn't detecting any threat yet.

Once his howl had died away, Raff settled back and simply waited. Only his ears betrayed his attentiveness, swivelling forward and back, listening for any approach. And his patience was soon rewarded, as he sensed eyes watching him.

He gave a low huff and then made a show of stretching his back, showing off the muscles that rippled beneath his fur. Then he settled even lower on the ground, making himself look non-threatening and open to approach.

His tail flicked up and down, welcoming his watcher forward.

Then his voice rumbled out, as if to nobody in particular, “it’s a lovely day.”

Kiche watched with him with great interest as he settled himself down into a position that made him appear anything but aggressive. She pondered to herself if this was an act of some sort, a ploy for this unfamiliar wolf to worm his way into her pack? Even so... perhaps that was what the pack needed. It had been so many moons now. Her mate had disappeared on a hunt, and with the numbers of the Woodland Wolves so low, they didn't have the resources to safely track him down, and had to hope that perhaps he just went rogue but was still alive. Since then, it had been very quiet on that front - she'd sent her son Kelwyn out into the world to recruit new members or create some litters of pups, but luck had not been on their side... This disturbed Kiche greatly, as in these solitary years she watched the Tribe wolves' numbers grow while her own dwindled to nearly nothing..

The alpha shook her fluffy head, her orange waves bouncing in the wind as she cleared the thoughts from her mind. Now was not the time to focus on the past or what could have been. He spoke to her in deep dulcet tones, lowering her guard a little. Kiche stood up to greet him, satisfied that there was only one wolf here and no additional scents hinted at an ambush. "It is quite lovely indeed, stranger. I am Kiche, of the Woodland pack. What brings you to my neck of the woods?" She stood there with a few feet of foliage between them, watching him intently.

A male his size was always a threat regardless of how he chose to rest but Raff did his best to look unassuming, hoping that his watcher, who was hopefully a wolf from this region, would be willing to talk.

And finally, after a moment where he wondered if he would leave with only the breeze as company, the bushes rustled, and then sheappeared. Emerging from the brush, still mostly concealed but showing enough that if given the option he would have thrown himself into a vampire den on a moonless night just to get one touch of her russet hair.

To be fair, she was the first female of his kind he’d seen for many, many moons but he couldn’t deny that he was immediately lovestruck. Her eyes, as green as the new spring leaves, were watching him with such intensity he nearly rolled onto his back and offered his belly.

His tail gave a few extra thumps despite his effort to keep his emotions from spilling over.

Keep it cool, Raff ol’ buddy.

“Kiche,” he rolled the name across his tongue and nodded. “I am Raff. I’ve been travelling alone for a damned long time but finally my paws have brought me here.” He lifted himself up slightly, just to show off his size and looks a little, hoping he was just as appealing to her as she was to him. “According to my ma, my ancestors hailed from the domain of the Woodland pack many generations ago and now I’d like to return home. If you’ll have me, that is.”

He placed a paw against his chest to show how earnest he was.

“Test me, any way you want. I’ll do whatever you ask.”

Kiche's emerald eyes watched the male, darkening with suspicion. Her posture stiffened as she listened to him, and for a long time she stood there in silence, mulling over every word, the tone of his voice, the stance of his body, reading his intentions. The wind blew cold and bitter, the last remnants of winter, rattling the beads in her hair like the tail of a diamondback.

A smile touched her lips as she heard him say ma. The twang in his voice was unfamiliar but charming. "Is that so, Raff of the woodland pack? Who is your mother and what has become of her?" Her ear flickered as she watched him. If he had this family somewhere in the world, then why not stay with them, defend them? Kiche feared she may know the answer already, but she needed to know more about this rouge wolf and his ancestry before just accepting his words at face value and letting him into her pack.

Was it true her pack was essentially only 2 at the moment, just her and her son? Yes. True too it was that he had a distinct look about him that did suggest there was some woodland lineage, but perhaps many rogue wolves mixed in. After all, even at its strongest, there had only ever been a handful of members in her pack... their reclusivity protected them so much that it became their downfall... She growled softly at herself to shake away these thoughts and focus on the present. Yes, her pack was practically non-existant and they were the most desperate for members they had ever been. But was this Raff character speaking the truth? Could he be a spy sent from another pack, or a rogue come to decimate the two remaining woodland members? She could not let this happen - she had to be completely sure she could trust him. And maybe if she couldn't... well perhaps Kiche could, at least, find some way to get some pups out of him before she sent him away.
