Surprises were not a bad thing. Her touch was not a bad thing. Oh. How foolish she must have looked, then, pulling her hand away from him instead of offering it to him properly. Nerys wasn't sure if it was embarrassment that made her heart skip or the fact that he had admitting to enjoying her touch. That he had called her lovely.
It was almost like standing here next to him, she could play pretend. There were no expectations of failure. No Aneirin back home to beat her for her every misstep. Just a boy, his puppet, and a few games they could play together. All she could do was stand there unblinking as she watched Ryo read over the box.
Then he mentioned her reading too. Her ears felt warm, and Nerys was all too aware of the blush that was gracing the tips of her ears to her neck at the idea. Blinking a few times, her eyes darted down to the pile of games. "Oh, uh..." She did not want to lie to this man. Not like this. Not about this. Yet she didn't want the pity to cross his face. The disappointment that she barely knew how to sing the alphabet, let alone write it. "No, My Lord, I cannot say that I have. Maybe that would be a game better for another day then. Once I've, you know, read the book." Dancing along the subject, she shifted her attention. If he had mentioned reading a book, surely the game would ask her to read. Anything but that. Anything but proving to him that she wasn't worthy of the title she hadn't earned.
Swallowing, she landed back on the candy sweet box. The one that had been so whimsical she'd immediately been drawn to it. The pictures showed no words on the game board. Nor on the cards. "Would you..." This felt silly. Surely he would say no. He was clearly a man of dignity. "Maybe mind this one?" The question was timid, as she offered him the box. Waiting for his no.
A no that never came. Not as he set up the game board or read the rules. Ryo had even let her pick the color of her piece first. For the first round they had played alone, just the two of them. And when it had only taken them about twenty minutes to play, Nerys had asked for another round that included Bubby. In total they had ended up playing the game three times, just trying to stretch out their time together. Or, that had been Nerys's goal. So much so that as the put the game away she had looked up at him shyly, ending the night on a request to meet here again soon to play more games.
