The start of Noll’s trip away from his childhood home had been a bumpy start. He had gotten cold feet, delayed, delayed again, and then when he finally got up the gumption to do it Zira had decided to join him for the initial stretch. Which was great with him. He didn’t mind the company and and truth be told would have missed his sister terribly if he had to go out alone the entire time.
He hitched his bag higher onto his shoulder and waved away some of his stray locks. Even though he had decided to follow in the steps of his earthling grandmother, he still kept his dreadlocks, a tribute to his parents who had worked so hard to be seen as equals in the eyes of the alkidike.
Zira would be there soon, they had decided to meet in the town square, already in one of the hybrid towns of Jauhar. It was time they headed further south.

Zira was a mixture of excitement and nervousness with some despair here and there whenever she realized that this trip would result in her separation from her brother. Not that he would be gone forever, but it was strange to think that Noll was going a separate way from her own. Where she had chosen the Alkidike path he had decided to go after their earthling heritage and into healing at that. She was proud of him and hoped for the best, but there was part of her that would terribly miss her brother so it was hard not to mope here and there whenever the realization struck. It would be a lie to say that she didn't brighten up whenever he delayed the trip, but eventually she knew that it was best to support Noll and so she had volunteered to go along with him. It would be nice to go and travel anyways, right? She couldn't be gone nearly as long as Noll intended because of her own Alkidike studies, but Zira wanted to make the most of their trip together.
However, she had not anticipated the dark storm clouds that dotted the horizon when she did finally meet with Noll. It didn't help that she was so lost in her thoughts that whole morning, bouncing from vendor to vendor to gather last minute supplies despite having already gathered some herbs and the like from her earthling grandfather. "Hey!" Zira beamed as she ran towards her brother, her travel bags bouncing along her sides as she moved forward without realizing how dark the skies were getting. "Got all the supplies you need for this?"

Noll smiled softly when he saw her, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. He nodded, adjusting the strap of his pack again more out of habit than need. “Yeah. I think so,” he said, voice quiet, nearly drowned by the wind beginning to stir at their backs.
He didn’t mention that he’d double-checked the supplies three times this morning, or that he’d bought more bandages than food, just in case.
Zira’s energy always filled the space between them, and he let it. She was good at carrying that weight, and he didn’t mind fading behind it. Still, his gaze drifted to the clouds gathering above the treetops, low and brooding, and something in his chest tightened—not quite fear, but something close. He didn’t want to worry her. Maybe the storm would pass. Maybe it was just a Jauhar afternoon teasing at drama.
He lowered his eyes again. “You didn’t have to come, you know,” he added, almost too soft to hear, though he meant it with all the quiet gratitude he couldn’t say outright.
