Stuck in a Storm

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Spring storms can often appear with out little notice and last for days. They are filled with strong winds and heavy rain, which means one must halt their travel if they are able to even get outside during the downpour. Your character has found themself stuck away from home in an area with others seeking to avoid the storm. Who do they meet? What do they talk about? How do they feel about the storm?

[ A storm has resulted in your character finding themself stuck in a location with others. Who do they encounter? What conversation do they have? And how do they feel about the strong storm rolling through? ]

Storms had always fascinated Jex. From the moment he was able to, he loved going outside to sit in the rain while the heavens collided fantastically above him. Other kids in the orphan system had feared storms. They'd either hid or cried when the thunder shook the building. It had been the one thing that made him feel brave in his time there.

Today was no different. The new family had just begun their journey to Zena when the storm hit. They'd found shelter in one of the outlying villages and now sat around a fire to dry their damp bodies with a few other waterlogged travelers. Jex sat just at the edge of the canopy where he could see the dancing sky through the thinning trees. There, the rain was soaking his legs while the shifting winds occasionally sent a heavy mist at his head. It felt good.

Of course, it would be even better with a little company. He turned to look for Ilmryn and get his friend's- er- his brother's attention.

Typically, whenever a storm had rolled through Ilmryn had been among the first to hide. The rain never bothered him; sometimes he was even relieved to feel the cooler water pelt his skin and take away even the barest of discomforts on a hot day. It was the thunder and lightning that scared him, causing the boy to seek shelter wherever he could find it. More often than not it was in a small, confined space - such as in a wardrobe, the old linen chest or beneath Eema's bed - but today...

...today he didn't have any of those things.

Since they were on the road there wasn't many places he could hide that would provide that same sense of comfort so - without many options - Ilmryn turned to the one thing that remained somewhat constant. Jex. He wrapped a cloak he'd found around his head and shoulders, keeping as low as he could until he found the other boy and settled close to him without a word.

Jex's gaze fell on a little girl about his age, and their eyes met instantly. Was.. she staring at him? There were too many strangers already, and now he was being watched by them? His face heated up and he turned back out to face the storm again, and was eternally grateful when he realized Ilmryn had silently joined him. This would keep the strangers at bay!

Wait.. Ilmryn was actually out here? With a contented smile, he scooted an inch closer to the other boy for quiet reassurance. "Heard Zena's all snow instead of rain and storms," he mused. Though he hoped it encouraged Ilmryn, the thought of not seeing storms anymore suddenly made him a little sad. A lot of things were changing.

He didn't move away from Jex when the other boy scooted a little bit closer, but he didn't acknowledge him either. The little shifter was content keeping his cloak tucked around his legs, his eyes downcast and away from the occasional bolt of lightning. "S'gonna be cold," Ilmryn groused. The thought of never seeing a rainstorm again was comforting, but it...also meant going away. And that...that was making it harder on him.

"...You think it still thunders in Zena?" If the rain got colder then what did the thunder turn into? And the lightning?

Jex nodded with a hint of hesitation. "Really cold." He had no real concept of the literal cold that awaited them in Zena though. Their new fathers were talking about blankets and coats, but his only winters had ever been experienced in Jauhar. Zena couldn't be that much worse, right? "They're promising lots of warm stuff to keep the cold away."

He raised his chin to look up and took a deep breath. He would miss the rain. "Dunno. Thunder comes with the rain, so maybe no rain means no thunder." He pursed his lips and knit his brow. "Do you think someone goes around watering all the plants in Zena if there's no rain?"

Warm stuff? Like those cloaks Eema would give them to keep the rain off during the stormy seasons? To a boy who had never known snow those were warm, but in actuality they were simply thin layers to keep the children from getting soaked. Would they have to wear them every day? Ilmryn wasn't so sure he would like that; the hoods always caught on his ears. Still though, it would be better than these storms.

"Maybe that's why they're all blue? They can stand over the blankets and wring the water out, like towels, and when they need more they just...walk into a river or something."

Jex was silent for a long moment, his eyes slowly widening as the proposed concept sank in. "Does that mean Jex will turn blue? Or you?" He stuck out his arms and squinted intently at the currently pale arms until his nose began to wrinkle. "Jex doesn't really wanna be blue." He turned his gaze to Ilmryn and gave that same dubious squint. "Hmm." Finally, he smiled with a nod. "You will look fine if you turn blue."

A streak of lightning lit up the field, followed swiftly by a crack of thunder that made Jex jump a little. The wind shifted and briefly sent a spray of rain over the pair before it shifted back around. Jex huffed and rubbed at his damp face.

Ilmryn cautiously lifted a hand out of his blanket and gave Jex's hair a tug. "You're already blue; you'll fit in."

Just as he was starting to find some semblance of calm the sky lit up around them and his breathing picked up. Ilmryn immediately pulled the cloth tighter around his head and if possible the child shrank into an even smaller ball. He could hear ringing in his ears and little else, even the world around him was getting spotty. He had to move, had to get away, but he couldn't. His legs wouldn't budge!

The reminder of his hair brought up a giggle from Jex. That's right! He'd only been thinking of the skin! Though, it was a very pale blue. Would it be blue enough to work?

Ah, but he would worry about that another time. he couldn't help a pang of sympathy when he saw how Ilmryn retreated into the cloth after that crash from the sky. He'd known the other boy wasn't fond of storms, but being the opposite meant he hadn't seen this side of Ilmryn fully either. He was out watching the sky while the other was hiding away.

He wanted to help.

Jex scooted another bit closer until his arm gently pressed against the cloth protecting Ilmryn. "Someone told me that storms are cloud family parties. A bunch of them get together and yell because they're so excited to see each other. They don't realize how loud it is for us down here."

Ilmryn wasn't a child that was prone to tears, but in that moment his eyes burned. The corners of his eyes were full and try as he might to hold them back a residual rumble broke the boy's concertation.

"Then go up there and tell them to be quiet." His voice quivered and his words were hurried, but having Jex that close helped him a bit. He moved his arm closer towards the other's until the only thing separating them was the cloth of his cloak. "I hate it; I hate the yelling." Ilmryn whined.

Well, that hadn't helped at all. Jex frowned and shook his head. "Remember Kipper? He tried to yell back. Went out in the middle of a storm an' cussed out the clouds until Eema dragged him back inside. They're too far away to hear."

He pursed his lips slightly and looked up at the clouds. "Jex doesn't mind it, because Jex knows it's happy yelling. ..And Jex isn't the one being yelled at, either." After a pause, he slipped the cloak off of his own back and rolled it into a long tube. "Here. You can put this over your eyes and ears if you want so the yelling isn't so loud and bright." It wasn't a pillow or a full blanket, but it should still muffle some of the noise!

For a moment Ilmryn wasn't sure what Jex was doing and honestly he didn't much care. He was so trapped in his own head that the only sounds slipping in were the all consuming booms of thunder and wind. When he felt the other boy shifted, though, he chanced a look over.

He paused a moment, his fear blown eyes squinting until he picked up what Jex was offering. Tepidly Ilmryn slipped his arms free and took the rolled cloth to block out the world around him. It wasn't perfect, but it helped. Spirits it helped so much. "...Thank you."

Jex watched for a long moment to make sure the cloak was being used effectively. He could see the relief it provided, which caused a large smile to rise on the boys lips. Usually, he was the one being helped. Doing this and seeing the result.. felt so good. He gently rubbed his arm against their joined point of contact. "Jex can take care of you for now," he murmured softly with no intention of actually being heard. Contented, he turned his attention back to the sky to enjoy the rest of the storm.

Fin~

Ever since his father - his real father - left him behind Ilmryn felt stuck and storms were a visceral reminder for him. The night he'd been abandoned...he could remember how scared he was, how hard he'd tried to reach for his father's hand, only to see the man turn his back and in a flash of lightning he was gone. Tree branches had whipped him just as hard as any of the emotions in the boy's chest and now...with all of this...he just felt lost.

But something about having Jex so close...about him trying to help instead of leaving and just staying...it helped. It helped just enough to keep him breathing.
