[Pride History]

User Image

[In the Beginning]
  • The pridelands was the first kingdom of its kind, created by the great king of the past Mahatu. He introduced fair laws to protect both the lions of his pride and the animals that called his territory home. Together they grew to respect one another thanks to his just ruling and even temperament. When Mahatu passed, he relinquished the throne to his son Ahadi, who upheld his father's teachings and helped to defend the circle of life.

  • King Ahadi had a more difficult time than his father did protecting the pridelands from outside interference. Surrounding prides and rogues had grown jealous of the pridelands success and wished to claim the territory for their own, which often led to conflicts and bloodshed. Fearing he may lose his father's kingdom; Ahadi made a bold move to betroth himself to the outside king's adult daughter, Uru. This clever solution married both prides together which brought with it strength and numbers and helped to solidify the pridelander's hold on their territory.

  • King Ahadi and Queen Uru had two sons, Mufasa the first born, and Taka the second born. It was decided that Mufasa would take over the kingdom as he was the first born, so Ahadi spent most of his days training Mufasa for leadership and guiding his eldest son towards the role of future king. Unfortunately, at this time the pride was also having a difficult time with a clan of hyenas that had emerged and was insistent on driving off the lions of the pridelands. King Ahadi was killed during a transgression with the hyena clan, leaving his eldest son Mufasa to take up the mantle as king.

  • King Mufasa worked tirelessly to exile and chase away every last hyena that was left in his territory. None were safe from his wrath, as he eventually drove the last remaining hyenas into the elephant graveyard near the edge of the pridelands. Finally feeling as though his father's kingdom was safe, king Mufasa chose Sarabi to be his queen and together they had a son, Simba.

  • King Mufasa was betrayed by his brother Taka, who had taken on the name of Scar after their father had passed away, and the Reign of Scar began. Scar attempted to merge the pridelands with the hyena clan that his brother had banished to the elephant graveyard, but overhunting brought ruin to the once lush and vibrant kingdom. King Scar was challenged and defeated by Simba, who became the new king of the pridelands.

  • King Simba once again banished all hyenas from the pridelands, and declared that no hyena would ever step a paw into the kingdom or be welcomed to live amongst them. Simba's reign was fraught with in-fighting between lions who were loyal to Scar, and those who were not, until eventually those lions were also exiled from the pridelands.

  • King Simba and queen Nala had a daughter, Kiara, who Simba trained to take over the kingdom as queen. Eventually, and through the help of Kiara and the outlander Kovu, the exiled lions were once again welcomed back home into the pridelands.

  • Queen Kiara and king Kovu ruled over a relatively peaceful time for the pridelands, as Kiara's focus was on mending the damage done to the pride and strengthening the respect and trust of all the animals of the pridelands. She proved to have a good heart and a genuine respect for all of those around her.

[Current Events]
  • King Kubwa and his queen consort Laini rule over the pridelands in a gentle and peaceful era. It has been many generations since the pridelands has seen any significant struggle or difficulty and the pride has grown prosperous. They have one cub between them, the heir Moyo, who is still very young and growing into his mane. Kubwa's younger sisters, lady Wema, is his only living relative and is beloved by the pride as a fun-loving gentle soul.

  • It is expected that Kubwa and Laini start looking for a suitable mate for their heir, most likely cementing a political engagement at the next submit with one of their allies. Moyo does not like to talk about it and tends to avoid anyone who brings up any questions on the matter.

  • There's chatter of a new threat on the horizon, the Outlands, though so far these outlaws have not reached the pridelands so for now their existence is shrouded in rumors and gossip. It is known that other prides have been attacked by this group of outlaws, though they are far from the pridelands' borders so for now everyone feels relatively safe from any threat.

  • Kubwa and Laini have attempted to reach out to the leader of the outlands at the behest of some of their political allies in other prides. The only thing known is that their extension of peace was met with a threat on their lives, though details are sparse, and more gossip has popped up about the outlanders and their intentions. Uncharacteristically king Kubwa is very tight lipped about the subject and quickly dashes any questions or gossip that might reach his ears. The pridelands is still receiving pressure from outside prides to deal with the outlander threat, as the pridelands is the largest pride and most powerful pride in the territory, but no official response has come from Kubwa.

[Pride Territory]

The pridelands are the envy of every territory around it. The grass is lush and vibrant, the water sparkles in the sunlight, and the wind carries scents as far as the nose can perceive. In many regards it is a paradise for the animals that call it home, all living in a delicate balance of predator and prey. The lions of the pridelands are very strict about not overhunting, which in turn helps the various herds flourish and thrive under their rule. Pridelanders are also quite keen to keep this balance in check and are constantly on the patrol for any animal that might upset the circle of life, such as, passing rogues entering the territory or hyenas attempting to cross their borders. Pridelanders aren't particularly violent, but guards will use force to chase away anyone they see as a threat to their homeland.

  • Pride Rock: The den of the lion pride that calls the pridelands home. Pride rock is the symbol of the pridelands and many important discussions and ceremonies take place on this majestic structure. The royals of the pridelands sleep within the den near the rock's mouth, while other pride members find various places in or around the structure itself. Anytime the king or queen needs to announce or present something to the whole of the pridelands, they do it by ascending the plateau and walking to the very edge where all can see and hear them.

  • The Water Hole: The pridelands boasts many small streams and ponds, but the main source of water is the water hole, a stream fed lake that runs into a river and ends in a waterfall. The water hole is sacred to the pridelanders, and they do not hunt around it. It is considered a safe place for everyone to get water without fear of predators, which has helped keep the herds numbers strong throughout the year.

  • The Gorge: Ever since the death of king Mufasa in this very gorge many generations ago, most animals consider it dangerous to be caught down in its depths. During times of heavy rainfall, the gorge is known to flood suddenly and an animal caught unawares can be swept away by the strong moving currents. At the end of this gorge, it opens up into a vast, dry desert full of thorny plants and the carcasses of animals who did not escape this sandy death pit. Somewhere, hidden deep within the sands, is a desert oasis and the only source of water for miles on end.

  • Tree of Life: In the past this giant baobab tree was home to the royal mjuzi of the pridelands, Rafiki, and has stood the test of time throughout the ages. The tree of life is a spiritual landmark for the pridelanders and is often where one goes to seek wisdom or guidance by the current mjuzi.

  • Elephant Graveyard: A dark shadowy place that was once home to a massive clan of hyenas during the earlier generations of the pridelands. Now the place is more or less deserted, but old tales of lions hearing haunting laughter late at night has kept most of the pride far away from this place. The elephant graveyard eventually opens up to the outlands on the opposite side, and the terrain to get there is considered treacherous at best and deadly in more ways than one.

[Pride Culture]

Pridelanders are the largest lions around, due to their generations of prosperity and the abundance of food and peace. The pride is a particularly peaceful one, preferring to work together within themselves as well as with the other animals around them that call the pridelands home. Violence is an absolute last resort, saved for chasing off hyenas or troublesome rogues that don't heed their warnings. It is much more common to see these lions conversing and talking through their problems, but if the issue is especially difficult to deal with, they will bring it to the current king or queen consort to help diffuse the situation.

The pride is ruled over by a single king or queen and their consort, and rulership is passed down to their heir when the current king or queen retires or is killed. Lions of the royal bloodline are thought of very highly and they hold significant social weight within pride dynamics, with the actual heir holding much more than a lord or lady. To be considered the true heir of the king of queen, the heir needs to be a legitimate offspring between the king or queen and their chosen consort. Despite this one exception, the pride as a whole has a pretty loose concept of mates, and individuals can choose to have one their entire life or many as the years go on. It is expected that both parents are involved in their cubs' lives, as family and community are held dearly by the pridelanders.

[Beliefs]
  • The Circle of Life - teaches that every animal, big or small, is connected and a part of one another. Every creature deserves respect, and lions are not above any of them.
  • "He lives in you." - is a common saying among the pridelanders when speaking of deceased relatives, especially parents.
  • The Great Kings of the past - it is believed all the great kings that once ruled the pridelands watches over and protects the lands and the lions that call it home from up in the heavens. They can be seen at night as bright twinkling stars.

[Laws]
  • No hyena will ever call the pridelands home again. This is due to the pride's sordid history with hyenas during the reign of Scar, and the dark times the pride and the lands were submitted to. They are attacked and driven away on sight.
  • The young, no matter the species, will not be harmed. It is a grave offense to harm a cub or hunt a calf and can be punished by banishment from the pridelands.
  • No hunting shall take place around the water hole. Every creature should be able to get water without fear of predators.

[Ranks]
The pridelands is home to a diverse group of animals who respect the circle of life. Though lions reign as king or queen of the land, they do take every animal into consideration and often hold council with the various other animals that call the pridelands home.

[Pride Leaders]
  • King/Queen: The ruler of the pridelands, who has been descended from the royal bloodline. Their biggest task is upholding the circle of life and the balance that must be struck between predator and prey. Their attention is on the whole of the pridelands itself, as they must be approachable to the needs of all the animals who call it their home. The king/queen are also responsible for dealing with political alliances to other prides, and ensuring the pridelands remains a safe and well-guarded territory.

  • King/Queen Consort: The king/queen's partner and mate for life. Their focus is solely on the welfare of the pride and its daily operations. The consort often helps their mate by seeing to the needs of the lions under their care and is often the first one approached with any in-pride issues. They have the authority to rule on these issues on their own, without involving their partner, if the situation calls for it.

[Royal Ranks]
  • Heir: Often times the first born of the king and queen, who will inherit the throne one day. The heir spends their days learning how to rule and the laws of the pridelands by accompanying the king/queen on their daily routine. They must learn political etiquette as they will need to build and maintain alliances with other neighboring prides once they ascend the throne.

  • Lord/Lady: Lions of the royal bloodline, though not chosen for king or queen, they still carry the blood of royalty in their veins. They are revered for their closeness to the king/queen, and this often carries a great deal of social weight within the pride. They are not required to help with hunting or any other daily activity, but they are often called upon to council the king or queen if the need arises.

[Common Ranks]
  • Artisan: Lions skilled in the creation of song, dance, and stories. During times of pride gatherings or celebrations they are often called upon to perform and entertain.

  • Guard: Strong lions that are tasked with keeping the pridelands safe from outside threats. They intercept any traveling rogues and drive away any hyena that wanders too closely to the border.

  • Hunter: (Default Rank) Most members of the pride do become hunters, and it is considered an honorable position. Hunters respect the circle of life and are careful not to break any laws while hunting for prey.

  • Nanny: Lions that spend their days watching over the cubs of the pride while their parents are attending to their duties. Nannies keep the little ones entertained with games and make sure they don't run off and get into trouble.

  • Scout: These lions patrol the pridelands, on the lookout for danger and keeping track of herd movements and migrations. Any information they find is shared with the guards and the hunters of the pride.

  • Teacher: Knowledgeable members of the pride that work with groups of adols to prepare and train them for the various roles they could take as adults. They also instruct on the history of the pridelands and its laws.

  • Student: The adolescents of the pride. Their days are spent learning from the pride's teachers in large groups. They try a little bit of everything, before deciding on their role as an adult.

  • Cub: The youth of the pride, too young to be students or to be left alone. When their parents are attending to their duties, they are watched over communally by a group of nannies.

[Ally Animals]
