I do NYSSMA every year. It's this thing where you sing a solo for a judge, and you get graded on how well you do. Levels 1-4 are graded out of 29 points, while 5 and 6 are out of 100. They also have you do sight singing. Two years ago, I did "On My Own" from Le Mis(level 4), and I got a 24(I lost points for crappy sight singing, and a mean judge who wouldn't let me start over). Last year, I did a level 6, and I got a 97! I got into my school's spring musical, "Pippin", and my character, Berthe, gets a whole song to herself! I'm the only person who really sings solos in my Jazz Choir, because I'm the only one who doesn't sing flat or sharp. But what sucks is that the solo I'm working on now, "Summertime", is mostly on an E, and that one E is my bad note!
ok, that's enough babbling! redface

I have been in choir every year of school since the second grade, I've tried for every solo, and only made One. I've been in a solo competition once, and I loved it. I'd do it again if i had the oppertunity.

Compete? Well, sorta.
First off, get voice lessons if you already don't have them. They give you good technique, which is highly useful. Just working off of choral singing style isn't going to work. It's the total opposite here... like, you have to not blend. That's the whole point.
Secondly, you've got to find songs that fit well with your voice. That's kinda half the battle. Like say you know that you are really good at classical singing, if your director has a classical solo, work on it a whole hell of a lot then come in and blow her away.
That's all I got but I bet you alraedy knew most of this.

My ensamble got a 3 but I got a 1!!!! heart heart heart heart My solo was "homeward bound", the ensamble was "Rocking Carol" Homeward bound? Is that the one I'm thinking about? (Weep no more, weep no more for I'm homeward bound, from the sea, from the western sea? And all that? I have the music somewhere) I sang that one last year, I got a I- because I never got to hear the actual piano part until the day of the performance so I didn't know when to come in AT ALL, and I'd only got to practice it once with piano at all, i was the only one who didn't get a practice tape, because she wanted to take it down for me (PUTTING IT OUT OF MY BEST RANGE scream ) and she didn't even transpose it until the day before, and so I had never sung it as low as she had it. A I- is fine, but there was one girl who was HORRIBLY OFF TUNE THE WHOLE TIME who got a I+ gonk scream

At my high school, any seniors in the select groups are pretty much required to sing solo at the pops concert. I love singing solos. I've got a really good part in the musical this year. I have a HUGE song pretty much all to myself.

Mmm, yum. I got my solos for contest the other day (contest-in three? weeks!)
One's Velvet Shoes, or something like that. I'm not familiar with it yet. And I don't have my own copy, our director hasn't given me it yet.
The other one? heart The Girl I Mean To Be from Secret Garden.

i take solo's to contest and i audition for soles in class. i use any solos to audition for college, district choir, and all american choir. contest is pretty stressful, especially when you have only a month and a half to memorize your forgien language and an english peice. but it's all fun too b/c it's a challenge. the auditions are pretty scary if you've never done it b4 and b/c it's new ppl. but whatever your preference. my contest peices are Danny Boy (yeah easy but yet hard b/c you have to make it sound very musical and everything) and Preguntalales or however you spell it.(hard to sing very good diction b/c some of it is the 2 vowels on the same note or consantant)
