Truly a feat of technical, arcane, and civic engineering, Silent Rain is at once a city, a fortress, and a war machine. The enormous airship flies high above the shinobi world, where the self-styled Lord-Captain, Prince Sylas Montague, rules his small, but prosperous kingdom and is well-liked by his subjects for his fair policy and cunning politics.

Sylas Montague - Lord-Captain of the Silent Rain
Feudal Spira - Al Bhed / Hidden Gears - Paradox

The glistening city shone bright in the midday sun above the Land of Iron, sparkles of light dancing off of polished marble and magicite, as if the city itself were glowing in shades of gold and white and royal blue. The streets were bustling with activity, and buzzing with excited whispers. They were traveling today, which was always a cause for excitement, their mobile city a sense of pride among the population of Silent Rain. A flying city was impressive enough in its own right, but one that could teleport was unheard of.

More importantly, they were going to the Prince’s homeland, Feudal Spira. There was much gossip concerning the meaning of this trip home, and why he needed to bring the entire city with him.

Deep within the core of the ship, other preparations were being made, as the crew began to perform the Ritual of Translocation, as much a feat of technology and engineering as one of magic. While the spell itself would be cast by the Captain of the ship, the crew was still needed to tend to the machinery, and monitor the systems, lest something go astray. They had never traveled this far before, and there was a definite sense of tension in the air as everyone silently went about their tasks, awaiting the arrival of their Lord-Captain, Prince Sylas Montague.

They did not have to wait long, as the sound of boots clicking against marble began to echo from beyond the open arched doorway, growing in volume, and their Captain came into view.

Sylas Montague looked the part of all of his titles simultaneously. He wore a ruffled shirt with sleeves that opened wide at the wrist, below a double breasted woolen vest. About his shoulders was a magnificent blue cloak, it’s collar upturned, resting high about his ears. His boots matched his cloak in both color and magnificence, with tall heels.

As he entered the room, it somehow became even more silent, as if the ambient noise of the ship itself were prostrating itself in reverence for the Prince.

When he spoke, his voice was high and dignified, no louder than necessary to be heard. His crew knew to listen when he spoke.

”I trust the preparations for our departure have all been made?”, the Prince asked, to the room at-large, standing atop the steps that descended into the engineer’s pit.

”Aye, cap’n. We’re at full power, and ready to go when ye are.” Osmund replied. He had been an engineer on this ship for as long as it had been a ship, and one on other ships before. While he was certainly knowledgeable about all of the systems of Silent Rain, He had only been serving as a stand-in chief engineer until a suitable (and younger) replacement could be found, and he could retire, as he was owed.

”Very well. I will begin the preparations for the ritual…” Sylas replied, making his way down the steps, his cape flowing dramatically behind him, boots clicking against the floor as he descended, crossing the room and stopping in front of a vaulted door.

”If anything goes wrong, kill all but auxiliary power.” He spoke, keeping his back to his crew. They all knew this already, of course. Nothing had gone wrong yet, of course, but teleportation at this scale came with a modicum of danger. The auxiliary power would keep Silent Rain in the sky, at least. The crew nodded solemnly, as Osmund offered the only words in response. ”Aye, and send word to yer kin. We know, boy.”

There was already a protocol in place in the event that this ritual went poorly and destroyed the caster. The advisory council and crew would each decide on 3 potential Prince-Captains, and a snap election would be held to name his successor, leaving the ship in the air with all defenses engaged until they did.

”That’s Captain Boy, Osmund.” Sylas replied with a chuckle. Osmund was one of the few people he would tolerate such a casual tone with, and one of the few who knew how the translocation ritual actually worked. With this Sylas turned the handle affixed to the middle of the door and opened it, stepping inside, the heavily reinforced door clanging closed behind him, the sound echoing in the empty metal room he found himself in once again.

The ritual chamber was a shining fusion of technology and magic, almost surgical in appearance and precision with it’s bare metal surfaces covered on all planes with arcane inscriptions, etched directly into the metal, a seemingly random jumble of circles and symbols, each with a specific purpose, each of his own design. Sylas had worked on this room for decades.

The center of the room was dominated by a raised circular dias, also covered with circular arcane sigils, though these were much more organized in appearance, and more deeply etched into the surface. Sylas made his way to these circles, and knelt in the center of the dias.

Captain Sylas took a few deep breaths to calm himself. He was always nervous when he did this, like he was gambling with lives. In a lot of ways, he was.

With a final deep inhale, Sylas began to focus his chakra, bringing his arms down and placing both hands flat in the center of the centermost sigil. He felt a slight vibration in the metal as it responded to his chakra. He increased his focus, increased the chakra flow to his hands, and tried to remember to breath (he had passed out more than once for forgetting to breath).

After a few moments, as if kindling an arcane fire, Sylas’ hands began to flow a shade of blue similar to the one he wore on his back. As his hands began to brim with energy, the sigils on the dias began to glow as well, dimly at first, but becoming brighter and brighter as they took in the chakra Sylas fed them.

The glowing began to spread out along the interconnecting jumble of sigils, like liquid pouring through channels, flowing out from the dias and down to the floor, and then up the walls and covering the ceiling as well, until the entire room glowed with a brilliant blue light.

A low hum began vibrate the floor, nearly inaudible, and quickly drowned out by the great sound of gears turning, electric sparks, and the sudden movement of metal, as the very walls around Sylas began to spin in three bands, the middle spinning the opposite direction as the top and bottom.

As the walls began to pick up speed, another hum began, this one higher pitched and louder than the other, growing in intensity and pitch until it was a screaming whistle.

Sylas nearly passed out from the effort, but managed to keep his hands on the sigil, which was now beginning to heat up from the sheer amount of energy being put into it, the metal threatening to sear Sylas’ hands.

Suddenly, everything went quiet and still.

There was a sudden shift, as if the universe, and time itself had been jerked to the side a foot or two, before sound and movement came back to the world in a great rush, the walls resuming their spinning motion, slowing gradually, their task now complete. When the spinning stopped, Sylas took a deep breath and made for the vaulted door.

There was always a sense of tension when he left the chamber, as if he were unsure what he would find on the other side. He pushed the fear from his mind and began to twist the great metal handle of the door, and pushed it open to the sound of cheers.

The translocation had been a success, judging from the attitudes of the engineers, a great tension relieved on everyone in the room. Osmund was the first to greet the Captain after the ritual. ”Ye’ve done it again, boy. Fine work, fine work indeed.” The old man chuckled and patted his captain on the back a couple times before wandering off to join the festivities.

Sylas did not remain, however, and instead made his way wearily out of the room and topside.

When he exited the palace, Sylas was greeted with the roar of cheers from his citizens, all wrapped in celebration over another successful translocation. The air buzzed with excitement and laughter, and Sylas smiled along with them. They were right to celebrate this great feat, as much a success on their part as his own. It was they who gave purpose to this city, and to her sovereign.

Sylas descended the grand marble stairs and made his way to the streets of Silent Rain, to join his people in celebration. It was a (somewhat new) tradition that the Captain gave a speech and a toast after a translocation, something that Sylas had done reluctantly at first, but had since resigned himself to. The people needed to see him to love him.

In some ways, despite the general liking of him, descending from his palace and walking the streets of his city and amongst his people felt like descending into a lion’s den. As he presence was noticed (immediately, owing to his flamboyant clothing) he was swarmed with adoring citizens and assaulted with their thanks. His cloak was soiled by filthy hands, his space invaded with unwanted pats and unbidden hugs. He bore it all with a plastered-on smile. This was his duty. Something he had resigned himself to, but had never become used to.

Surrounded on all sides by the throngs of grateful citizens, Sylas held up a hand to bid the crowd to silence. The roar dulled to a whisper, and then to silence. When the crowd had quieted, Sylas spoke to them at-large.

”Citizens of The Silent Rain. We have performed the Ritual of Translocation successfully once again, and have arrived at our destination safely. Safety protocols will be in effect for 24 hours while we ascertain the threat level of our current space. In the meantime, drink, be merry, celebrate! It is not a small feat we have accomplished here, once again.”

Another roar of applause erupted from the crowd, as Sylas turned back towards the steps, the crowd finally parting for him once they had gotten their speech. He ascended the stair and returned to the Palace.

The atmosphere was jovial in the palace, even amongst Sylas’ servants and various employees. Everyone seemed to be joining in on the celebration in their own way, each wearing smiles, chatting cheerfully with eachother. Sylas endured the back-pats and congratulations for a while longer before ascending the large spiraling staircase to his own chambers.

The captain was exhausted, and immediately sank into a large leather armchair, leaning his head back and closing his eyes for a while. The ritual was taxing, a task that took most of his energy, and left him exhausted for a day or two each time he performed it. He was glad to be away from everyone for a bit, enjoying his solitude.

After a few minutes, the captain fell into an uneasy sleep.

As the Captain sank into his chair, his sleep was fitful, but dreamless. When he finally awoke, it was dark outside of his window, though he could still see the flickering of fires and the scattered hoots and hollers of the festivities, continuing late into an alcohol-fueled night.

Beta had delivered his speech and toast at the dinner, he knew, as he had done a few times before, when the captain found himself too weary from the ritual to tend to the more public aspects of his position.

Sylas remained in his chair for some time, keeping his eyes closed, still sore and tired from the exertion of the ritual of translocation. With a thought, he summoned a servant with some wine, and waited for it to come. When it did, he nodded his thanks, and told the servant to leave the bottle. He drained the glass, and then began drinking from the bottle itself.

He had not told anyone but Osmund his true purpose for coming here at this time. That all would become clear in time.

As the Prime Captain drank alone in his study, a near-perfect replica of him walked the halls of his palace, making his way to the helm, heeled boots clicking upon polished marble. There were simply far too many tasks for the crew to go without a captain at any point, and so this slightly-older version of Sylas Montague was a common sight, unnoticed by most, but expected by those who had close enough dealings with the captain to recognize the fine signs of aging.

As the Captain entered the helm, the crew did not pause from their work, a single person standing from a wooden chair and approaching the captain to receive orders. The crew was well-trained, to be sure.

”The Prime Captain will be leaving the ship for a short time. Your orders are to maintain lockdown until you receive orders from the Prime Captain to lift it.” The Captain spoke, in a business-like tone. The copies were never as personable as the original, more for utility than socialization. The crew knew to expect this, and often used this as a means to discern which version of their Captain they were speaking to. Naturally the Prime captain had more weight than the others, but all had absolute authority over the ship. Their command was law.

With this, the Captain turned swiftly and left the helm, returning to his rounds.

As drunk as he wanted to be, Sylas began to move about his study, gathering items he would need for his task, and stuffing them unceremoniously into a pack. He did not know when he, himself, would be returning. If Silent Rain were to exist and thrive alongside the Shinobi villages, he would need, well… shinobi. And that would require diplomacy, something he could not simply leave up to a clone.

Finishing his packing, Sylas threw the bag over a shoulder, and left his study for what felt like the final time, though he knew it wasn’t. A shinobi crew is what he needed, and that was what he intended to find.

The celebration continued onboard the Silent Rain, despite the true captain’s absence. Drunken citizens stumbled joyfully through the streets, the air pierced with cheers and hoots, the party showing no sign of stopping.

Deep in the bowels of the ship, the engineers worked to keep the defenses up, mist pouring from ports along the ship to form a dense layer of clouds to obscure the ship from view.

A copy of the Captain stood at the helm of the ship, giving orders, taking in information, and giving more orders based on that. The ship was, beneath the surface and celebration, a well-oiled machine, each part fulfilling it’s purpose.
