Prompt 3 (Drink Yourself Silly): Pop up shops are a dime a dozen in Destiny City this time of year, and for as much weirdness as they cause, there’s still something alluring about them. Walking through the city, you happen to come across one that seems particularly cozy and is decorated in such a way that you just know they’re trustworthy. The menu only has a few items but there’s something for everyone. Maybe it’s hot chocolate, maybe it’s coffee, maybe it’s some chilly winter sweet--whatever it is, it’s delicious. And magic, but you didn’t know that when you ordered it. It started with an itch at the back of your throat, but what happened after that was anyone’s game. Some of the drinks turn into a tickle in your nose, and now you’re suddenly sneezing snowflakes for the next hour. Maybe you finish your drink and you suddenly feel warm--like you’re in the middle of summer. (Do you even need your coat? It’s so hot! --Or is that a fever?) Or, the itch turns into something else--and suddenly you feel the urge to sing. It’s compulsive, you can’t help yourself, you must sing. It’s like you’ve forgotten how to communicate in any other way. It fades an hour after you finish the drink, but still...
Dawn rode her bike through town slowly. It was quite difficult in the snow and with the packages that Laurie, her foster mother had asked her to pick up. The foot traffic in this area made it even worse. She came to a stop again and sighed. Holding her bike with one hand, she reached up with the other and adjusted the scarf around her neck as no less than fifteen people walked out of the nearest pop-up store and crossed her path, impeding her journey as they made their way to their vehicles, their shopping carts overfilled. She let out another exasporated sigh. Rich people.
It was not they impeded her journey. She enjoyed being outside in the winter air. It was not that they had a lot of money, or that they bought too many presents. Laurie, her foster mother was wonderful and made sure that each one of them would get something special, and she was an awesome cook, and would make sure they had a special Holiday. But their time with her was almost up, her and her twin Davie's. Where would they be next Christmas? Would they even be together? Social Services often separated older siblings.
What Dawn really wanted for Christmas, was a family - a stable one, not leaving one every six months, and having to worry if she would be split up from Davie again. That's why she resented the rich people, - they didn't have to worry about being split up from their only family every six months. The people finally passed by and she started riding again.
Somewhere down the road, a heavenly scent drifted toward her nose, warm apple cider. No. I do not have enough money. Still her belly rumbled and she looked in the direction of the scent. There was a lovely little pop-up drink shop, decorated with the theme of Santa, Elves, and Reindeer. No. Pop-up shops in Destiny City are never good, especially this time of year, Dawn where is your common sense? she thought to herself. Her belly rumbled again and that scent was just so good. A small voice in her head said How can a store decorated with Santa be bad? Oh and hey look at that sign!
It was strange that her subconcisious was saying it like that, but she looked and upon closer examination the Santa-esque sign said, Take a selfie w/ Santa, get 1 free Apple Cider! And she was so cold... I ask myself again, Dawn, where is my common sense? *click*
"Here's your free Apple Cider, Miss. Happy Holidays!" "Thanks!" The Apple Cider was actually the perfect temperature, hot enough to still be heavenly, but just cool enough, that it wouldn't burn her lips and mouth. As she threw away the empty cup, an itch developed in the back of her thoart. She quickly made it home and delivered the packages. The itch remained. She gave a little cough. Laurie noticed and asked if she was alright - if maybe she'd caught a little cold while she was out.
Without meaning to, Dawn burst into song, "I'm perfectly, perfectly alright, thank you thank you!" Everyone stared at her. She would have stared at herself if she could, instead she went beet red. Laurie, kind of in shock, nodded and commented, "Well, I hope you have that much energy when we carol..." After half an hour, it became evident, that Dawn just couldn't stop singing and that it seemed to be a magical affliction. Laurie managed to extract the details of what happened via concert and she was not happy with Dawn.
"Where is your common sense, girl? In this city, you NEVER go to pop-up shops especially this time of year. It should wear off soon, if it doesn't, I'll take you to see about getting help." Laurie turned to the rest of kids in the home. "Let this be a lesson to the rest of ya'll." Laurie was right, after another half an hour the singing was gone.
