Bronze Tuinunuth

Origin of Name:
California Condor #615, hatched at the Oregon Zoo and released in Southern California. The Ventana Wildlife Society reached out to the Nez Perce Tribe Cultural Resources Department to name him, and Tui-nu-nut was chosen, meaning "No Tail," as his tailfeathers had required repair after being damaged by repetitive hard landings on the ground.

Inspiration:
The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is a New World vulture and the largest North American land bird. It became extinct in the wild in 1987 when all remaining wild individuals were captured, but has since been reintroduced to northern Arizona and southern Utah (including the Grand Canyon area and Zion National Park), the coastal mountains of central and southern California, and northern Baja California in Mexico. Although four other fossil members are known, it is the only surviving member of the genus Gymnogyps. The species is listed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered. Their plumage is black with patches of white on the underside of the wings; the head is largely bald, with skin color ranging from gray on young birds to yellow and bright orange on breeding adults. Its 3.0 m (9.8 ft) wingspan is the widest of any North American bird, and its weight of up to 12 kg (26 lb) nearly equals that of the trumpeter swan, the heaviest among native North American bird species. The condor is a scavenger and eats large amounts of carrion. It is one of the world's longest-living birds, with a lifespan of up to 60 years.

Condor numbers dramatically declined in the 20th century due to poaching, lead poisoning, and habitat destruction. A conservation plan was put in place by the United States government that led to the capture of all the remaining wild condors which was completed in 1987, with a total population of 27 individuals. These surviving birds were bred at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo. Numbers rose through captive breeding and, beginning in 1991, condors were reintroduced into the wild. Since then, its population has grown, but the California condor remains one of the world's rarer bird species.

The condor is a significant bird to many Californian Native American groups and plays an important role in several of their traditional myths.

Personality:

A noble creature at hearts, Tuinunuth is truly Kleoth's son, and well aware of it besides. He takes great pride not only in his family, but in being family-oriented, whether that family is biological or chosen - he has large wings under which he can fit many dragons and humans alike, and will be quick to take others under his wing both literally and metaphorically. He derives much of his purpose and worth from being a caretaker, and while he might not actively look for individuals to adopt...well, it happens. Easily and often. If someone looks even the least bit sad or lonely, or like they might be having a bad day, or even seem cranky, this bronze will want to help. Naturally, he will also want to know why they're feeling the way they are - all the better to help! - but if the someone in question doesn't want to talk about it, he will do his best to accept that and offer what other support he can regardless. If he happens to circle back to the subject later when they might be more amenable, hopefully they won't mind overmuch.

Tuinunuth has a hard time leaving well enough alone, even though he knows it's one of his weak points and tries to resist at least nominally. Eventually, the urge to pry will almost always get the better of him, even if he's previously been told not to. It may be later in the conversation, or a day, or a sevenday, or a month, but he will always circle back around, hoping that the subject of his concern will now be open to sharing. In his favor, he comes at it from a place of well-meaning, genuine want to help, rather than a general nosiness or interest in drama or gossip. If he has to go about it in a roundabout way, so be it - he will not hesitate to employ cuddles or perhaps a favorite meal over which a heart-to-heart can be more easily had.

Even if someone isn't in a place to need his intervention, Tuinunuth is an immensely fond and caring dragon, always ready to give and receive affection, whether in the form of boops and cuddles, gentle mental waves of love, or surprise gifts, whether it be food, something that reminded him of them, or engaging in their favorite activity with them. One would be hard-pressed to find a more attentive or selfless friend than Tuinunuth, who even when alone will spend much of his time thinking over what he can do for those he cares about. It follows that, if he ever falls in love, the object(s) of his attention will want for absolutely nothing - if it is in his reach to give, he will give it, and think nothing of the effort.

He is incredibly indulgent of his friends and loved ones, so while he comfortably occupies a caretaker role, he is not a strict caretaker at all. He is, instead, very much a "spare the rod, spoil the child" type. If something makes them happy, it makes them happy, and who is he to criticize or deny them? This can make him something of an enabler, and if any of his clutchmates are prone to overeating, for instance, he'll need to be watched, or he'll be sneaking them some of his own food after their rider has cut them off. In the same vein, his giving amd sacrificing nature can be to his own detriment: Tuinunuth puts himself last, always, and will neglect his own happiness in favor of the happiness of others, and would never hesitate for even a moment to throw himself between danger and whomever it's coming for.

Positive Traits: Noble, Sacrificing, Caretaker
Negative Traits: Prying, Enabling, Puts-Self-Last

Egg: Large, would love some eggneighbors if possible.

Adult Size: 92'
Physical Attributes:
An absolutely massive dragon, Tuinunuth will grow into maximum length and the physique to match it. As if that weren't enough, the span and width of his wings are as impressive as they come. These wings will take some growing into, however, and he may well go through some awkward-looking stages, though he will always bear himself with grace...except, perhaps, when it comes to taking off from the ground. This is a lot of dragon to get up into the air, so he will always prefer to drop from a height. He may also be in for some particularly heavy landings when learning to fly.

Additional Notes:
If Tuinunuth's rider had any dreams about living beachside, they best give them up - this boy needs a ledge, thank you.

When it comes to romance, Tuinunuth is likely to fall easily and often, and for the whole spectrum of colors. There is no jealousy or selfishness in his hearts, and he would do especially well in a mutually agreeable cuddlepile; while his size makes him an ideal Big Spoon, he doesn't mind making adjustments so that everyone is getting what they want.

Green Sgailth

Origin of Name: a Scottish Gaelic word for ghost, "sgàil." One of the many common names for the Barn Owl is "ghost owl."

Inspiration:
The barn owl (Tyto alba) is the most widely distributed species of owl in the world and one of the most widespread of all species of birds, being found almost everywhere in the world except for the polar and desert regions, Asia north of the Himalayas, most of Indonesia, and some Pacific Islands. It is also known as the common barn owl, to distinguish it from the other species in its family, Tytonidae, which forms one of the two main lineages of living owls, the other being the typical owls (Strigidae). There is considerable variation of size and colour among the approximately 28 subspecies, but most are between 33 and 39 cm (13 and 15 in) in length, with wingspans ranging from 80 to 95 cm (31 to 37 in). The plumage on the head and back is a mottled shade of grey or brown; that on the underparts varies from white to brown and is sometimes speckled with dark markings. The face is characteristically heart-shaped and is white in most subspecies. This owl does not hoot, but utters an eerie, drawn-out screech.

The barn owl is nocturnal over most of its range; but in Great Britain and some Pacific Islands, it also hunts by day. Barn owls specialise in hunting animals on the ground and nearly all of their food consists of small mammals, which they locate by sound, their hearing being very acute. The owls usually mate for life unless one of the pair is killed, whereupon a new pair bond may be formed. The barn owl is known by many common names that refer to its appearance, call, habitat, or its eerie, silent flight, including but not limited to: demon owl, ghost owl, death owl, church owl, cave owl, hissing owl, hobgoblin or hobby owl, dobby owl, screech owl, straw owl, and delicate owl.

Personality:
At first blush, calm and quiet Sgailth is easy to underestimate, and some may even mistake her for shy.  That would be a mistake, however - she may not be the chattiest dragon, or swagger her way around the Weyr, but she is a force to be reckoned with if she chooses to be, both physically and mentally.  This green is wickedly smart, and is all too happy to run mental circles around those she deems less gifted than she.  She excels at subtle barbs and veiled insults that may well fly over others' heads; you may think she's paying you a compliment, but read between the lines and you might find just the opposite.

But even when she's being sincere - perhaps even moreso then - it would be fair to say that Sgailth can be something of an acquired taste.  She has a very deadpan, very dark sense of humor, it it can be incredibly difficult to tell when she's joking and when she's being serious...though it's often a bit of both.  There's nothing she really considers off-limits: she has absolutely no respect for 'too soon' or similar social niceties when it comes to who and what can or can't be remarked about in her particular way.  While it may seem cruel or inappropriate to many, it's really just her way of coping with the world and the darkness within it.  Run and hide all you like, there's no escaping it - sooner or later, death will come for everyone, so why waste time pretending otherwise?  She will be cold comfort indeed in the wake of injuries or deaths, between this realism and her refusal to sugar-coat her views or peculiar humor.  Though she mourns, she does so in her own way, and is too much herself to ever modify that, even for the sake of others.  She is how she is, and makes no apologies for it; Sgailth will change for no one.

Fortunately, Sgailth doesn't mind being by herself, so even though she may not make friends easily, she won't be troubled even if she has only one or two.  Quality over quantity, right?  While she's not the least bit bothered if others don't care for her, she actually is quite sociable, and even enjoys a party: life is short, after all, especially in the time of Thread, so best to enjoy it while she can, in her own sort of way.  It would be a stretch to say that she's the life of the party, given her skill at killing the mood, but as long as she and Hers and any friends they might make are having a laugh, that suits her just fine.

While she is very, very well aware of the inevitability of death - her own, and Hers', and everyone else's - she hasn't simply resigned herself to it.  Sgailth will fight tooth and nail to hang on to life for as long as she can, and will one day be among the fiercest of of Threadfighters.  In spite of any morbid comments she may make during lessons, she will throw herself wholeheartedly into weyrling training, and eventually into the life of a full-fledged fighting dragon, which may earn her some indulgence when it comes to the morbid or untimely things she says.  She is a good, effective, reliable fighter, and depending on her rider, might go far - though motivational speeches probably won't be her forte.

Positive Traits: Confident, Smart, Self-sufficient
Negative Traits: Morbid, Insensitive, Unapologetic

Egg: ???

Adult Size: 46'
Physical Attributes:
Her length may be dead average for her color, but Sgailth herself is anything but: slender and pale with long wings, and made of grace whether on wing or on the ground. Her tail is a bit shorter than average when compared to the rest of her, and if one looks very closely, her left headknob is angled just slightly higher than her right.

Additional Notes:
The stealthiest of hunters, Sgailth will prefer smaller prey animals to larger ones, even if it means she has to eat more of them - a lot more, as this green has quite the appetite. Where it all goes is a mystery, given that she stays enviously sleek no matter what.

Sgailth will Rise no more than once or twice a Turn, and only ever at night - and it's probably just as well that she takes to the skies so infrequently, given that her eerie, piercing call when she does so could wake the dead. Her preferences lean strongly towards other females.

Blue Dastcalakith
Written by Meepfur
Colored by Meepfur

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Origin of Name: "dast-ćālākī," meaning "lightness of finger" in Urdu. In Oliver!, "Consider Yourself" is sung by the Artful Dodger, Jack Dawkins, who is a particularly skilled and cunning pickpocket.

Inspiration:
"Consider Yourself" is a song from the 1960 original West End and Broadway musical Oliver! and the 1968 film of the same name. It was introduced on Broadway by Davy Jones and the ensemble. In the 1968 film version, it is performed in the market and led by Jack Wild's Artful Dodger. In all versions, Dodger sings it when he first meets Oliver, after offering to get the destitute and alone boy food and lodging. Lyrically, it is an enthusiastic gift of friendship from Dodger and his as-yet-unseen gang to Oliver, assuring him warmly he can consider himself "our mate" and "one of the family" as "it's clear we're going to get along". The 1968 film builds it to a spectacular extended song-and-dance routine involving the street crowd, market workers, policemen and chimney sweep boys.

Personality:
Dastcalakith - or 'Dast' to his friends, and we are friends, aren't we? - is a most social, hospitable, charming beast. Has he mentioned charming yet? Well, he is...when he wants to be. This is a blue who knows how to get what he wants, and the solution is almost always turning on the charm: something he is very, very good at. He is silver-tongued indeed, though his charm is not the suave, genteel kind; no, his is bright-eyed and roguishly playful. He thoroughly enjoys what he is about, and sees no reason to hide it. He is clever and he knows it, to the point that he is positively joyful about it, and he will eagerly share that joy with those he considers his friends and family.

He is, however, quite particular about those friends and family, who, regardless of blood ties, will exclusively be his fellow chromatics. A whip-smart realist under all of his enthusiasm, he knows how the system works at High Reaches, and he can clearly see the divide between the haves and the have-nots: between the metallics and the chromatics. Though he knows well how to play and pretend at being what they expect, and will skillfully wield his charm to keep them off his back, underneath it all he regards them with distrust and no small amount of disdain, painting every gold and bronze of his home with the same brush. Browns will be judged on a case-by-case basis, depending on where their loyalties lie; if they side with their own kind (i.e. the chromatics), Dastcalakith will embrace them as kin, but if they instead make themselves toadies to the metallics, he will regard them with scorn as traitors. When it comes to blues, greens, and whites, he is more forgiving - the less fortunate must, after all, do what they can to get by, and survival is not a crime.

Ah, but if you are one of Dastcalakith's, you are in. As a friend, he is an absolute riot to be around, and he will see that the good times roll and keep rolling. He is a party dragon for sure, here to live it up and make merry with his best mates, and nothing is going to stop him, not even that stuffy old bronze over there shooting them dirty looks. So what if they're being loud and rowdy and making a scene of it? As far as he's concerned, they're entitled - after all, the life of a dragon in the age of Thread is a dangerous one, especially when there are a few bleeding idiots out there who actually think of the smaller colors as disposable. It's not everyone, of course, but the fact that there are even a handful rankles him, and he is inclined to hold it against the rest. At any rate, this blue is going to live his life to the fullest and encourage his fellows to do the same, and anyone who doesn't like it can go fly themselves for all he cares.

That being said, Dastcalakith isn't one to start real trouble: he's not here for a revolution, he just wants for him and his to get their piece of the pie...or at least to get a bit of their own back. His clever nature, combined with the chip on his shoulder, can make him downright devious at times. He will delight in machinations and subtle pranks that can't be traced back to him, anything to make someone he dislikes look bad or even just ridiculous. Even smaller, more obvious gags are in his repertoire, and he won't think twice about goosing a tail here and there, or sticking his out to trip someone. Taking someone down a peg or two brings him great pleasure, but he also revels in the attention. They're in a serious lesson and he catches a friend's eye? Time to make a face at the Weyrlingmaster while his back is turned to entertain them.

Rather than just being an attention hound or malcontent, Dastcalakith truly does care deeply for his friends and chosen family, and would do anything for them. If any one of his is wronged in some way, you can be sure that there is no length he wouldn't go to to right that wrong, no matter who he has to stand up to or how dirty he has to fight.

Positive Traits: Charming, Clever, Loyal
Negative Traits: Judgemental, Mischievous, Vindictive

Egg: Large, sitting at a precariously crooked angle.

Adult Size: 49'
Physical Attributes:
While on the smaller end for a blue in terms of overall length, Dastcalakith is leggy and rangy, and even once fully matured will always look like an adolescent who hasn't quite grown into himself yet. He is naturally thin, no matter what he eats or how much, and has a particularly long tail and long, thin headknobs.

Additional Notes:
While Dastcalakith will revel in Flights, and enjoy being caught every bit as much as he enjoys doing the catching, he is like to be a difficult dragon to pin down permanently. He is, after all, a partier at hearts, and while he'd never knowingly break someone else's, it would be a struggle for him to give up his rakish lifestyle.

Light and whippy, he will make fighting Thread look effortless, at least until his stamina wanes, and his accuracy is enviable.

Brown Cyprioth
Written by Meepfur
Colored by Meepfur

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Origin of Name: My Fair Lady was based on the play Pygmalion, itself named after said mythological figure. In the myth, Pygmalion was a sculptor from Cyprus.

Inspiration:
"On the Street Where You Live" is a song with music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner from the 1956 Broadway musical My Fair Lady. It is sung in the musical by the character Freddy Eynsford-Hill, who was portrayed by John Michael King in the original production. In the 1964 film version, it was sung by Bill Shirley, dubbing for actor Jeremy Brett. In the scene, Freddy is calling upon Eliza Doolittle, whom he had met earlier in the day at Ascot Racecourse, where her speech tutor had taken her as a trial of his lessons in teaching her how to speak like and pass for a proper lady, only for her to shock everyone when she reverted to foul language while watching a race. Freddy, however, is enchanted.

Personality:
There is no denying that Cyprioth is his father's son: this brown is a hopeless romantic right down to his core, and will delight in songs and tales of love all his life, believing with all his hearts in happy endings. He would, of course, like very much to have such a tale all his own, but he is a patient dragon, content to wait however long he must for the lady or gentleman of his dreams to cross his path...though they might not actually be a lady or a gentleman at all, not in the traditional sense of the words, because Cyprioth will never look upon golds or bronzes with romantic love. To be clear, he has absolutely nothing against metallics - in fact, he fits in with them extremely well, and is likely to be close to many, especially within his family. He has all the proper social graces and genteel charm to move within those social circles and even enjoy them, and as such would be an ideal addition to a Queen's coterie, so long as she is content that his role would remain solely platonic - a devoted and gentlemanly member of her court, and never a potential suitor.

In addition to his deep fondness for smaller chromatics, Cyprioth is utterly fascinated by anyone not from High Reaches, be they dragon or human. Other Weyrs, particularly those very different from his home, such as Western, intrigue him. He doesn't wish for his birthplace to change and become more like them, but he is curious in an almost academic sense about the differences in leadership, culture, and even geography. And Holds and Halls? He finds those even more interesting! Even the smallest, most backwater cothold and its inhabitants will get his hearts racing - perhaps even moreso! Should he happen upon someone not from Weyr, Hold, or Hall at all, oh, he will be enchanted, and desperate to know more about them and their life. He is always hungry for more stories, and what are people, after all, but stories? He does not, however, objectify or dissect them, for he really just genuinely loves people, and no matter how earnest his inquiries, he will always be polite and respectful. If told to leave off, he will in an instant, with the most genuine of cordial apologies.

For all his zeal to learn more about the world and everyone in it, it never occurs to Cyprioth - for better or for worse - to so much as think that he might seek to apply any of it at home. As interesting as all that is Other is to him, it is still other, and he is in fact quite content with High Reaches as it is. Though he will always look forward to adventures outside of it with great enthusiasm, he is also happy to return to the comforts of home, to the life that he has known since before he was even hatched. As a brown, and one well-suited to either hobnobbing with high society or fraternizing with the rest as he sees fit, it's easy for Cyprioth to live with and be comfortable in the traditional system, leading him to be complacent about the status quo.

While he can clearly see and point out the flaws in, say, Nabol, or in an isolated cothold that represses their women, High Reaches is his home, and he sees it through rose-colored glasses, blind - perhaps even willfully so - to the fact that not everyone is as happy there as he is, particularly among the 'little' colors that he loves so dearly.

Positive Traits: Romantic, Gentlemanly, Curious
Negative Traits: Naive, Formal, Complacent

Egg: Medium, sitting up straight and proper.

Adult Size: 72'
Physical Attributes:
Cyprioth cuts a fine, fine figure, and is as handsome a specimen of a brown as any would ever want to find. He is a touch on the slender side, with everything in perfect proportion - owing to his good breeding, no doubt.

Additional Notes:
Cyprioth is likely to go through at least a crush or two as he grows and matures, and may try his claw at Flights once he's old enough, but if he ever finds his One True Love, he will be absolutely devoted and ever-faithful. Gender is inconsequential, but they will without a doubt be blue, green, or white; Cyprioth has no eye for metallics, nor for his fellow browns.

He will make an excellent and enthusiastic Search dragon. Bring on the adventure, he has people to meet!

Blue Scalariventh
Written by Meepfur
Colored by Meepfur

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Origin of Name: the Bubo virginianus scalariventris subspecies of Great Horned Owl, also called Snyder's Great Horned Owl, found primarily in central Canada.

Inspiration:
The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus), also known as the tiger owl (originally derived from early naturalists' description as the "winged tiger" or "tiger of the air" ) or hoot owl, is a large owl native to the Americas. It is an extremely adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. Its primary diet is rabbits and hares, rats and mice, and voles, although it freely hunts any animal it can overtake, including rodents and other small mammals, larger mid-sized mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. In ornithological study, the great horned owl is often compared to the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), a closely related species, which despite the latter's notably larger size, occupies the same ecological niche in Eurasia, and the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), with which it often shares similar habitat, prey, and nesting habits by day, thus is something of a diurnal ecological equivalent. The great horned owl is one of the earliest nesting birds in North America, often laying eggs weeks or even months before other raptorial birds.

Personality:
It is, at first blush, easy to get the wrong impression of Scalariventh, as he looks for all the world like the most indolent of blues. Not only is he a physically heavy dragon, he always has a heavy-lidded, almost sleepy look about him, even when he's paying attention. Rest assured, though, he is paying attention: he is highly aware of his surroundings and everyone in them. Though he might appear ready to doze off ay any moment during lessons or lectures, he is in fact giving them his rapt, undivided attention. He is a lover of knowledge, any knowledge, and will devour even the most minute of trivia with gusto. He does, however, come about his heaviness honestly, as he devours food with just as much gusto as he does knowledge; the farthest thing from a picky eater as you'll find, he'll try anything at least once, and assuming he doesn't suffer any ill effects from it, will probably happily eat it again regardless of taste. If something has ill effects but tastes good, he'll probably eat it again anyway and just suffer through the consequences later. His rider will need to keep a sharp eye on him, both so that he doesn't eat too much and so that he doesn't eat something that will make him sick. It's a struggle they'll face for the rest of their lives, because Scalariventh will never outgrow his gluttony.

When he's not occuppied with necessary duties such as drills and sweeps, Scalariventh is most often found laying about and engaging in his favorite activity: thinking. He is quite intellectual, even philosophical, and will never object or succumb to boredom when left alone, because he has his thoughts for company, and they are quite excellent company indeed. Not that he doesn't enjoy the company of others! He will take great pleasure in meeting and speaking with all sorts, dragon and human alike, and getting to know them and their thoughts; far from being a snob, he will seek and enjoy discourse with anyone, even if they aren't necessarily his intellectual equal, though those who are are especially stimulating, and he will seek them out specifically when he has a craving for a more spirited discussion. He also takes great interest in those with more specialized knowledge such as Crafters, the more experienced the better, and would love to pick their brains about their chosen field. Their passion for their Craft - for their knowledge - is a joy to him.

He'll mostly have to satisfy himself with those who are stationed at or come to visit the Weyr, however, as he doesn't actually like to leave. An inveterate homebody, Scalariventh will only leave Western when he has to in order to fulfill his duties. Otherwise? You will find him right here, nice and comfortable and content. Even getting him to go on a restday trip somewhere will be like pulling teeth, and there will need to be significant bribery involved. Don't let his sedentary nature fool you into thinking he's truly lazy or irresponsible, though - when it really comes down to it, he is a rock-solid, reliable dragon. While it's true that he would have been much happier in a time without Thread, when he could have spent all day reclining on the beach and having a rousing intellectual debate over a good meal, he won't hesitate for even a moment to do his duty, and do it well.

Scalariventh will train every bit as hard as any one of his siblings, and when push comes to shove, he will be a formidable warrior. He has a home and a family to protect, after all, and the better his skills, the more able he'll be to do just that...and the better he is, the better the chances of him and His coming out alive on the other side so that they can get back to what makes life worth living.

Positive Traits: Intellectual, Reliable, Dedicated
Negative Traits: Gluttonous, Sedentary, Homebody

Egg: Small, on its side and firmly set in a deep wallow.

Adult Size: 64'
Physical Attributes:
Scalariventh has some serious heft to him, and it's not all pudge: there's quite a bit of muscle on him, too. He has a slightly short tail but incredibly prominent headknobs, and his wings, while broad, overall seem a bit small for his bulky physique. He'll manage, but lack much of the agility his color is usually known for.

Additional Notes:
Romantic love may well be slow to come to Scalariventh, as it's simply never been among his interests, so if and when it does, it's like to blindside him. Lust is no factor in his life, either, and he will only be moved to chase if the object of his affections is involved...maybe. Color won't matter, nor appearance nor station - it's someone's mind that Scalariventh will fall in love with.

With a mind like a steel trap, he will excell at strategy, which will serve him well in the fight against Thread.
