Applegate Coast is located about a day's journey to the northwest of the city and is a miniature mountain range with steep cliffs, powerful ocean currents, and strong winds that discourage most people from lingering for very long. The conditions might not be very hospitable, but the absence of people makes the coast a nice, relaxing place to escape from all the excitement of the nearby city. If you're willing to brave the dangers, it also makes an excellent fishing spot!
Because it's so isolated and free of distraction, many fighting Pokémon can be found here honing their skills in pursuit of mastery. They welcome strong challengers into their territory, but be careful not to get in the way of their training if you don't want to get clobbered!
Wild Pokémon native to the area:
Machop, Machoke, Geodude, Graveller, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Krabby, Kingler, Skarmory, Tyrogue, Wingull, Pelipper, Makuhita, Hariyama, Corphish, Bagon, Shellos, Gastrodon, Throh, Sawk, Dweeble, Crustle, Mienfoo, Binacle, Crabrawler, Clobbopus, Grapploct, Wattrel, Kilowattrel, Klawf, Wiglet, Wugtrio, Bombirdier
Pokémon Available by Fishing:
[To fish, bring your fishing rod and generate a random number from one to ten. Whatever Pokémon you roll, you fish up. There's no limit to how many fishing posts you can make, but any Pokémon too strong for your rod will simply get away without being fished up. Good luck!]
1-2 = Magikarp 3-4 = Tentacool OR Shellder 5-6 = Horsea OR Remoraid (Requires a Good Rod) 7-8 = Frillish OR Clauncher (Requires a Good Rod) 9 = Mantyke 10 = Gyarados (Requires a Super Rod)
Berries that can be picked here:
Aquav Berries, Cheri Berries, Chople Berries, Kelpsy Berries, Oran Berries
[Black colored Pokémon can be caught with a Poké Ball, Blue colored Pokémon need to be caught with a Great Ball, and Red colored Pokémon need to be caught with an Ultra Ball.]

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... It had been a long journey to reach the coast, but Regal quickly forgot his fatigue as his eyes took in his new surroundings. A salty breeze whipped his snowy hair to and fro as he noted the vast ocean, tall cliffs and numerous fighting-type Pokémon training on the shore. All in all, it was an impressive sight. He couldn't wait to begin his training.
"Let's begin by setting up a base camp." Master Yamamoto suggested as he came up behind the younger man. "Once we're set up, I'll give you the basic tour and then we can get some training in before the sun goes down."
The two men and their Pokémon got down to work and took extra care as they set up what was to be their base of operations for the next few days. Yamamoto guided them to a small cavern near the coast where they would be sheltered from the fierce winds, and they set up their tents as well as a small space for a cooking fire. They also placed a generous amount of large leaves and other greenery over the entrance of the cave to disguise it from curious Pokémon, finishing up their camp.
After admiring their handiwork, the duo made their way to the coastline to get some practice in while their was still light. Regal sent out Nova to battle while Master Yamamoto decided to lead with his Hariyama, which the trainer immediately scanned with his Pokédex. The larger Pokémon kicked things off with Fake Out, clapping its powerful hands together to create a shockwave that sent ripples throughout the sands they were standing on. It temporarily stunned Nova, but the lizard quickly got its wits about it as Regal commanded it to retaliate with Dragon Rage. Under Yamamoto's instruction, the Hariyama slammed one of its massive hands onto the ground, smothering the blow under a massive Sand Attack.
When the cloud of sand cleared, Nova was nowhere to be seen. The Charmeleon then emerged from the sands behind Yamototo's Pokémon, having used Dig in combination with the smooth sands to quickly circle behind its opponent. It burst from the ground using Dragon Rush to close the distance, but the Hariyama used Detect to anticipate its trajectory and neatly sidestepped out of the way. Regal had Nova use Thunder Punch now that they were in close range, but the glancing blows it dealt wasn't worth the Force Palm that sent it flying shortly afterwards. A quick examination was enough to tell Regal that it was time to throw in the towel, so he did just that.
"You were avoiding using fire attacks because of Hariyama's Thick Fat. That was your downfall." The master said matter-of-factly afterwards. Nova was resting in his ball after being treated for his hurts and now the two men were enjoying some evening fishing before dinner. "Using Dig through the sandy terrain was a clever idea," He continued as he watched Regal struggle to fish up a Magikarp. "But your Charmeleon wasn't able to fight in its preferred fighting style, and that affected its performance."
Regal pondered over the masters words as he watched his newly caught Magikarp's Poké Ball disappear with a flash of light. He also thought about the way Yamamoto had handled his Pokémon in their battle. He had been in complete control from start to finish, countering every move Regal had thrown at him. He had been pretty confident after earning his first gym badge, but two one-sided defeats in a row had him second guessing himself. As if sensing his student's thoughts, Yamamoto put a reassuring hand on Regals shoulder.
"You're doing fine, Regal. You can't rush experience. Tomorrow is a new day. Just be patient and keep doing what you're doing."
After a quick dinner of mushroom fried rice, Regal did his usual hour of drawing followed by an hour of studying on his Pokégear before calling it a night. He wanted to get plenty of rest so that he could give it his all tomorrow. Hopefully he could live up to Master Yamamoto's expectations.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... Regal woke up early the next morning with renewed vigor. Yamamoto was awake as well, and put a simple breakfast to start cooking as he and Regal started their day with some exercise. Some of the wild Pokémon even joined the two men and their teams for their morning workout, including a wild Machop and Machoke that insisted on giving the young trainer a close up look at their impressive muscles. Once they were sufficiently warmed up, Regal and Yamamoto moved on to breakfast. The master had made a large pot of miso soup along with some white rice and grilled fish he had caught while Regal was still sleeping. Once again, a few of the wild Pokémon came over to join them in the delicious meal, including a wild Tyrogue and Clobbopus that Regal scanned with his Pokédex in between bites of food.
"They would make fine additions to your collection." Yamamoto remarked as he watched the younger man pore over the device. "Tyrogue is especially interesting to me." Regal agreed as he waited for the two to finish their meal. "It can evolve into three different Pokémon depending on how it's raised. I'm really curious to train one up."
With their meal finished, the majority of the wild Pokémon dispersed to go pursue their own individual training, with the exception of the Tyrogue and Clobbopus that had clocked in Regals interest. With a brief look to one another, the two nodded their heads and took up fighting stances, though their expressions remained friendly. It was clear that they were interested in seeing what he had to offer. Excited for the challenge, the trainer released Sylvain and Icarus to battle, who looked equally excited for the opportunity to show their stuff.
The Tyrogue moved first. Closing the distance fast, it attacked with Bullet Punch but was stopped in its tracks when Regal commanded Sylvain to block it with Quick Guard. He then had Icarus blow the two away with a powerful Gust attack, which did a great job of whipping up the sand around them. The Clobbopus wasn't having any of it, though. Powering up with Bulk Up, the fighting type dug its beefy tentacles into the ground and advanced through the winds towards its prey. It finally got close enough to send Sylvain flying with a powerful Rock Smash attack, prompting Regal to change up his tactics.
Calling out his commands, the trainer watched with pride as Icarus skillfully caught the Trecko on his back before turning to face their opponents. The Pidgeotto then launched its new Heat Wave attack at the duo while its partner fired off a Dragon Breath from its perch. The two techniques swirled into one before crashing down on the opposition, leaving them both down for the count as Regal clumsily threw a pair of Poké Balls at them.
"Well done." Yamamoto said approvingly as Regal congratulated his Pokémon on a job well done. "Let's use that momentum to kick off some more training."
And that's exactly what they did. For the rest of the day, Regal trained diligently under the strict taskmaster. Martial arts, Poké Ball technique, advanced battle tactics; they worked on it all. Even fishing, although the trainer failed miserably at it. The uneven sand footing and powerful winds made it difficult, but by the end of the day Regal felt like he had made some real progress. Nova had been taught the blindingly quick Aerial Ace attack and was rewarded with an Expert Belt from Yamamoto, who was quite pleased by the fire type's efforts.
"His fighting spirit is impressive." The older man chuckled as they retired for the evening. "I look forward to seeing how he develops."
You and me both. Regal thought as he lowered his aching body into bed. His entire team seemed to be fired up by training camp, and he couldn't wait to see what kind of progress they made tomorrow. As he closed his eyes, Regal made a mental note to start documenting their progress in his journal. He was willing to bet that the results would be amazing.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... The next day was a hectic one for Regal. It started off like normal with morning exercises and a pathetic attempt at fishing. But around noon he could hear some loud rumbling and sounds of battle in the distance. He had grown accustomed to watching and hearing the fighting types here spar against one another, so the trainer could tell immediately that this was different. It was louder. More chaotic. He and Yamamoto quickly advanced towards the northernmost part of the coast, and were stunned by what they saw.
Countless Pokémon were brawling against one another along the coast, their eyes dulled but their swings heavy. There were signs of damage everywhere they looked. A pair of Rangers were already on the scene as well. Regal recognized one of them as Ranger Stark, who had served as one of the judges at the Bug Catching Contest. As they approached, the Ranger breathed a sigh of relief as he got them up to speed on what was going on.
"It looks like they got into an unripe batch of Aquav Berries." He said while holding up one of the fruits for them to see. "A whole bunch of them fell off of that tree over there before they were ready. Probably by a Crabrawler that was too hungry to care. They're so strong that all of the Pokémon who ate them ended up badly confused. They're just acting off of instinct now."
"Do you have a solution?" Yamamoto asked as they watched Stark release a Pinsir and Simisage out into the open. "Of course." Replied the other Ranger, who introduced herself to Regal as Candice. "Thanks to your new student here catching those mushroom Pokémon for us, we have plenty of stomach medicine to help sort these guys out. Just gotta pin them down so we can administer it."
"Then it's settled." Yamamoto replied as he released a Mienshao and Grapploct to the field before turning to Stark. "How do you want to do this?"
He and Stark ended up handling half of the beach while Regal teamed up to handle the other side with Candice. She utilized a Butterfree and Pangoro to assist her, with the bug type Pokémon utilizing a powerful Sleep Powder to incapacitate its targets while the larger fighting type pinned down its own opponents with its powerful palms. The Ranger herself was utilizing a special device called a Capture Styler, which allowed her to use something she called a Capture Disc to calm and befriend a number of the confused Pokémon.
Regal would have loved to keep watching the fascinating device in action, but he had to do his part as well. Icarus flew around with Sylvain on his back, using Feather Dance and Dragon Breath respectively to weaken and paralyze their targets. Regis and Jarvis were both able to use Thunder Wave to achieve the same effect, and even Nova was trapping waves of Pokémon with Fire Spin so Magnolia could hit them with Stun Spore. Once they were paralyzed, it was a simple matter to administer the medicine to the afflicted Pokémon.
They finally finished, and the rangers even insisted on giving Regal a reward for his assistance despite his protests. They waved them goodbye, and just like that they were back at it again. Yamamoto was relentless in his training, though Regal couldn't really complain. His team had performed better than ever during the panic, and the trainer was sure he had the master to thank for that. His lessons seemed to have added a touch of discipline to everyone in addition to polishing their strengths. Slowly but surely, they were seeing the results of their labor. It wouldn't be long now.

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... After a full five days of training, studying and (attempted) fishing, Regal and Yamamoto were finally ready to bring their training camp to an end. They had made solid progress yesterday, with the trainer catching himself a Slowpoke and Bagon to add to his collection, and today they were squaring off one last time to see how much he and his team had learned.
"Use Force Palm, Mienshao."
"Use Reflect, Magnolia!" Regal cried as his Ribombee put up a wall of light to deflect the blow. Both men's Pokémon specialized in speed, and they were practically a blur as the two zipped around trading blows. Yamamoto's Mienshao was using Acrobatics and striking at its tiny adversary with its whip-like arm fur, while the bug type retaliated fiercely with its newly learned Aerial Ace attack. They were evenly matched, but the barrier Regal had Magnolia form gave them an edge. Both Pokémon were starting to get tired, but just as Regal prepared to go for another attack, the master surprised him by using U-Turn to quickly swap out his Mienshao for his Hariyama, who shattered Magnolia's barrier with Brick Break.
He thought about switching as well, but Regal wasn't finished with Magnolia just yet. He had the bug type zip around its larger opponent, using Struggle Bug and Sweet Scent to weaken it from range. It was working well enough, but Yamamoto countered by having his Hariyama use Focus Energy before knocking out its opponent with a well-aimed Bullet Punch.
Undeterred, Regal quickly swapped out to Icarus, and surprised Yamamoto by having the bird Pokémon fly straight up before launching a Heat Wave attacked at the opponent below it. "That won't do any damage from such a distant range." The older man commented. "Even if it does make contact, Hariyama wi- hm?!"
"Too late." Regal replied as he saw the realization on the masters face. It had been hard to tell in the heat of the moment, but now that he was looking Yamamoto could see black powder sprinkled in here and there amidst the white sands. He had wondered why his student had taken such a defensive approach with his Ribombee when it had the type advantage, and now he knew why. He was dragging out the battle to make time for it to scatter Powder all over the battlefield. He could only watch as the flames made contact with the earth, engulfing the whole area in one gargantuan fireball.
Even his Hariyama's Thick Fat couldn't prevent it from being knocked out by the explosion, and Yamamoto was still coughing as he returned it to its ball before releasing his Mienshao back onto the field. This kid was nuts.
"Don't let them regroup, Icarus!" Regal cried with his eyebrows still smoking. "Use Reflect and then Aerial Ace!" Quick to obey, the Pidgeotto formed a new barrier of its own before nosediving back into the battlefield. It wasn't quite as fast as Magnolia though, and Yamamoto's Mienshao was able to score a few Drain Punch attacks in between strikes. Combined with its Regenerator ability, it was starting to look pretty healthy again. Regal was patient, though. After using Mirror Move to deflect an Aura Sphere back at their opponent, the fighting type was forced to use Bounce to escape the attack, opening it up for Icarus to finish it decisively.
Pumping itself up with Agility, the bird Pokémon began flying in circles at breakneck speed, creating a devastating Twister attack. Unable to dodge in midair, its opponent was engulfed in a giant column of swirling sand. By the time it ceased, Yamamoto's Mienshao was down for the count. He'd barely been able to scratch his Pokémon before, and now Regal had managed to knock out two and take the lead. As he reached for his final Poké Ball, the master made a mental note to ask Regal to let him see the battle journal he'd been scribbling in every night. It was sure to be a fantastic read.
"Since you're doing so well, I'm going to give you a special reward." He told him while holding up the Poké Ball. "This last Pokémon is an especially rare one. I hope you enjoy seeing it in action."

Regal Bastionxxxxxxx »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» "The human mind is like a parachute... As Yamamoto's final Pokémon entered the battlefield, Regal quickly scanned it with his Pokédex and learned that it was called an Urshifu. It had two forms apparently depending on how it had been raised, and the master's appeared to be a Single Strike Style. Recognizing the threat, the trainer had Icarus use Hurricane to blast the new opponent with a powerful surge of wind and sand. It was an impressive attack, but the fighting type wreathed itself in some kind of dark aura before charging through the storm and launching a powerful strike on the unprepared Icarus, knocking it out instantly.
"That must have been its Wicked Blow. It's not called the single strike style for nothing, it seems." Regal muttered in disbelief as he returned his Pokémon to its ball. "It's up to you now, partner."
Roaring as he hit the field, Nova released a shower of red-hot flames into the air before awaiting its orders. It was clearly excited to face such a strong opponent. Both Pokémon struck at the same time, with Nova launching a Flamethrower while the Urshifu struck with Aura Sphere. The two attacks collided in midair, causing an explosion and cloaking the field in smoke. Seizing the opportunity, Regal had Nova blend in a Smokescreen to obscure itself even further.
"The same technique as our first day here." Yamamoto remarked once the smoke was cleared and the Charmeleon was nowhere to be found.
"Not quite."
Instead of bursting from the sand immediately, a column of flame erupted from underneath Yamamoto's Urshifu, who used Detect to anticipate the blast and dodge into the air. Only after it had dodged did Nova burst from the sand, using Flare Blitz to charge at its opponent. In a flash of ingenuity, the lizard Pokémon had also enlarged its tail flame to propel it even faster to its target, who was unable to dodge in midair.
"Now Nova! Use the momentum for a Seismic Toss!"
Pinning its opponent skillfully in the air, Nova didn't let up on the flames as it brought the two of them down below with a devastating crash. It was a perfect combination. Which made the feeling of dread that much worse when they saw Yamamoto's Urshifu stand back up after what they thought for sure was a slam dunk. The fighting type was definitely hurting and covered in angry-looking burns, but it wasn't finished. Steadying themselves for the final confrontation, the Charmeleons Blaze ability wreathed the lizard in blue-white flames as it challenged the Urshifu's Wicked Blow with Flare Blitz. A colossal pillar of sand was kicked up from the impact, and as the cloud of earth rained back down on them, Regal let out a breath he didn't realize he had been holding. It was over. The master's Pokémon was down to a knee, but Nova was done.
"That was a splendid battle." Yamatoto told him as he shook hands with his young protégé. "It's been a while since my Urshifu was tested like that. Your combination attack was superb."
Hearing the master praise him dulled any sting Regal would have otherwise felt from the loss. He and his team had fought brilliantly, and they had been able to put everything they'd learned to use in the battle. He couldn't have felt more ready to battle Ken. Their training camp was finally over. Now it was time to return to Applegate City, where Regals final test awaited him.
