Notes for playing Primary Tension:Charm and Manipulation. Family and Freedom-- The divide between what he wants and what his parents wanted for him blurs but is unmistakably there, and Eden struggles to learn what he is, how he fails, and where he has gone wrong between good intentions and abuse. Eden is a very charming and kind-hearted character but has a need for control. He is created in third year, has a two year gaslighting campaign with Weslyn before Skip intervenes. Their children were raised to respect the process, and seek excellence in service within the confines of the system-- and thus far, Eden has found he thrives with structure. Having a plan--or even a general goal--gave him clarity and calm in the face of uncertainty. More independence at Hogwarts didn't mean fewer protocols for him--it just meant he has more control over them, something Eden found he very much liked. xxx♜BACKSTORY♖xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ♜♖EARLY CHILDHOOD Eden was the first child of Captain Charles Harper and Lieutenant Juliet Harper-- Charles is a marksman instructor, and Juliet an army nurse. Both served in various muggle war zones and peaceful posts, which brought Eden and his younger sister Matilda into contact with a variety of locations throughout their childhood. They lived primarily in military housing, but also spent considerable time with Juliet’s family in Cardiff, and in the Shropshire countryside where Charles had grown up. Among Eden’s favorite postings were near Bradford for the food, and London where he caught a glimpse of the Queen in person.
Charles and Juliet had high expectations of both children, and Eden both feared and respected his parents. He did his best, but was quite unremarkable in muggle primary schooling. It didn’t matter where he was, he was always just-proficient and never quite the top. Instead, Eden shone in athletics and marksmanship: he played on the local youth swim or football team wherever they were, and worked hard to be a versatile athlete, although he preferred distance freestyle and side midfielder. Given his dedication, Eden was bitter and furious when people accused him of cheating-- there was no way he could always so precisely predict where to receive and launch the ball, after all?
Then when he was nine, Eden kicked a ball in anger and it burst-- there were accusations he had snuck small explosives off base, and that effectively ended his football aspirations. As his bitterness and frustration grew, occasionally lights would fizz out or glass would shatter around him. No one could explain what was happening, and within a year, Eden’s normal life turned into being cooped up with his studies. Mattie was his only friend and he started to look forward to changing schools. Instead, Eden channeled his full energy to swimming, studies, and marksmanship, hoping that people would overlook odd occurrences around him if he just excelled at everything else. Charles would take them fox hunting with hunting rifles or airguns to get them accustomed to weapon basics and safety; Eden sought to impress-- he could thoroughly clean out a gun, reload quickly, shoot precisely, perform first aid proficiently—and was always improving.
The Harpers’ questions were answered when an odd man showed up, bearing an invitation to a magic school. Sir and ma’am were somewhere between skeptical and suspicious. In the end, they decided: Eden would attend Hogwarts. He abandoned his muggle homework and searched for explanations in his new magical studies, even if they made no sense. He saw some of this magical community when they went supply shopping, but was very much still bewildered. On 1 September 2048, at 1100 hours, he gave Mattie a tearful hug goodbye, saluted his parents, and embarked on the train to learn magic and see how it might help his future military aspirations.
♜♖SCHOOL YEARS
♜FIRST YEAR Eden’s first year was spent learning as much as he could about magic. He reported back every week without fail, and drew strength from Mattie’s responses-- she wrote him nearly every day it seemed, and was working so hard beyond that— he couldn’t disappoint either! He wrote back about everything from classes to classmates, and once accidentally sent home a page of charms notes. Unfortunately, given his unfamiliarity, nearly every subject gave him trouble that year, and he couldn’t bring himself to ask for help. He found out about Quidditch halfway through the year, but the game was still too confusing and his priority was schoolwork. When he went home for the winter and summer, Eden realized how with him gone, the pressure on Mattie had doubled. He didn’t know how to protect her other than working even more diligently to fulfill their parents expectations—-if he could still follow their plans, maybe they wouldn’t be so demanding with Mattie. He spent the breaks studying his muggle coursework and reviewing his marksmanship as much as possible.
♖SECOND YEAR Come second year, Eden got an owl, Corporal Feathers, to facilitate the volume of letters he and Mattie were exchanging. He finally sought help in magical studies from Augustus, an older student in Hufflepuff. He joined the dueling club to better understand magical combat applications and started occasionally attending the morning Namaste club sessions. Eden ran into Skipper and Weslyn swimming in the lake a few times and occasionally hung around awkwardly with them. He also took Advanced Flying and there got a better grasp on Quidditch and promised Yukon, another older student, that he would try out the following year.
♜THIRD YEAR Eden finally worked up the courage and method to ask Weslyn out about halfway through the year. They spent a lot of time studying and on little Hogsmeade excursions together. Between her, Quidditch, Dueling, and Namaste, Eden kind of realized a lot of people at Hogwarts were actually pretty cool, which helped open break him out of his lonely shell a little. Healing was a breakthrough in his ability to cast magic, which gave him much more confidence in his other subjects. Over summer they also found out Mattie was also a witch and would be joining him at Hogwarts! He also looked up local places with Floo access and used it to go out with Weslyn for weekend hangouts or dates. With his sister, friends and a girlfriend back at Hogwarts, Eden was for once more excited than apprehensive about going back to school.
♖FOURTH YEAR Eden’s fourth year started with Mattie joining Gryffindor. He was disappointed she wouldn't be in Hufflepuff, but hoped she would find the freedom from pressure she craved there. He spent every moment he could tutoring Mattie or studying with Wes. Being more aware of the people around him had led Eden to the conclusion that he was in a rivalry with everyone his year. There was Quinn that just seemed to always steal the top spot in class from him, and Pietro who never bothered to do better in classes yet still knew everything. His frustrations with Wandless magic grew until he lashed out at a random kid one day in the winter and Wren, who he already didn't like, took away a whole 50 points from Hufflepuff. Thankfully Rian didn't seem to raise more issue with him and even got him interested in looking into more magical military history.
Eden spent the second half of the year focused on studying, earning points back for Hufflepuff, tutoring, and keeping his head down. He was jealous of Chadwick for getting the Dueling club captainship, but the worst part of the spring was the growing anxiety as Wes seemed to pull away and brought up just being friends multiple times. His fear was realized when, over the summer, he caught Weslyn and Skipper hanging out and overheard she meant to break up firmly. Feeling betrayed by Skipper and insulted by Weslyn, he was spent the rest of summer buried in studying. His loneliness only abated after a pleasant conversation with Calliope Whitethorne late in the summer.
♜FIFTH YEAR intensified the rivalries Eden saw everywhere. His rivalry with Penelope Barrett in Transfiguration tended to be almost fun, but Eden couldn't see past rivalries as antagonistic -- he was entirely blindsided when she asked him out and callously rejected her. He regretted his phrasing immediately, but never found the right way to apologize. With this insensitive rejection and Chadwick asking Callie out literally minutes after Eden had confessed his plan to ask her out, Eden was back to square "My sister is my only friend" and would have isolated himself again had Yukon not given him responsibilities as Quidditch Vice Captain Potato and Hailey not convinced him to join the Language club. Between Namaste, Dueling, Quidditch, Language clubs and studying day in and out and hanging out with Mattie, Eden found diversions.
After OWLs, Eden started the summer by finally asking Callie out to the Planetariwm in Cardiff. They had a wonderful time and started making weekly visits there, getting dinner and talking a walk nearby in the evenings. Unfortunately, when OWL scores were posted and his scores were decidedly lower than acceptable, his parents forced him to break up and smashed Pietro, Mattie's guitar. He was grounded, which led to his ignoring Skip's letter of reconciliation.
♖SIXTH YEAR broke the trend of isolation. Eden was elated to reconcile with Calliope at the Sorting Feast, and hearing her get Mattie a guitar warmed his heart incredibly. It also ended his months-long cold war with Mattie. Towards the end of the year, he realized something definitely off and more severe about her mood swings.
With Callie's encouragement, Eden apologized and reconciled with Skip and Penelope.He also finally asked Professor Lovette for help with Wandless magic and after months of fruitlessness, they recognized that his own mental turmoil and self-deprecation was causing the mental and magical block he had with spellcasting. Over the latter half of the year, they worked to alleviate that stress.
Just before exams, he and Callie had a date on the Bell Tower where he learned of Callie's past. Although he wanted revenge on her "Father", for Callie Eden silently promised to not go looking for information or vengeance. They met in secret over the summer, under the cover of "studying" and his potions internship with Professor Whitethorne. Later his parents invited Finley, Chadwick, and Callie over for lunch and shooting as a way of corroborating their stories.
♜SEVENTH YEAR Eden spent the year studying for NEWTs and keeping an eye on Mattie. He and Callie continued to date, finding time for each other through their exam years. They went to the Halloween Deep Sea Horrors Masquerade together and had a great time--but it was from this dance that people saw him talking to Jess, Callie's friend who was dating Lochi, and started unkind rumors of infidelity. Although annoyed, he was assured that Callie did not believe in them. He and Chadwick had an epic duel to close off their Hogwarts careers, and then it was off to NEWTs and the real world.
♜♖POST-GRADUATIONWhile Eden originally wanted to go into muggle military service, when he found out in school it wasn't possible due to the Statute of Secrecy, he looked around and eventually became interested in the work that Hit Wizards and Aurors did. Thus, after graduation he signed on with the Department of Law enforcement and began his training as a hit wizard. On one of his duties as a hit-wizard, he found himself face-to-face with Tomlinson Southwark. He let Callie know her kidnapper's fate as best he could, struggling between vengeful fury and respectful loyalty to Callie.
During a date ice-skating on the Black Lake in Winter 2055, Callie fell in. Eden apparated her back to home and recruited Ma'am to help treat her hypothermia. As a result, his and Callie's relationship was laid out to the Harper parents. With Sir's encouragement, Eden finally proposed to Callie during the fireworks finale of the Summer 2056 Arts Festival. They were married under a meteor shower in February 2057. For their honeymoon, Callie's family sent them on a cruise to see the Northern Lights in Reykjavik, Iceland and returned to a cozy flat on the outskirts of Cardiff, near the planetarium Callie now worked at.
On Christmas Eve later that year, their good friends Chadwick and Finley were also married. Since the incident at the lake, Eden reconsidered his work as a hit-wizard, and switched to training as a mediwizard. While he was frustrated to be back in training, he found the work rewarding; Callie also seemed more comfortable with his mediwizard work, especially with a baby on the way: they welcomed Persephone Bree Harper to their family in August 2058
During these years, Mattie's bipolar condition flared worse and worse, leading to her failing her OWLs and having to retake the year. Eden was guilt-ridden, but the aftermath meant his parents finally accepted getting her help and loosening up on her music participation. He was supremely proud of her retake exams and progress. While suspicious of her boyfriend, Simon Blake, simply for daring to date his baby sister, Eden did try to get along once he knew they were serious: he and Simon hung out one morning in Fall of 2058 and managed to find common ground. He was startled but supportive when they moved in together following Mattie's graduation, as he was with her intention to pursue Hit Wizard training while she got her music career going.

WITHDRAWN When his hard work was not only not recognized but denounced as cheating though, Eden became bitter and frustrated, and that only started outbursts that made things worse. Solitude and the relentless pursuit of untouchable excellence-- penetrated only by family-- has since become a shield. He uses what he knows about others’ weaknesses and insecurities to try to help them overcome it, but also to make sure his own are never exposed.

Eden spent the first four years of Hogwarts basically buried in studying. He tries very hard, but doesn't have very good emotional balance or understanding of how to study effectively and thus far has refused to seek extra help -- this will start changing in sixth year.
CORE Astronomy ~ E
In first year, Astronomy and History were the only subjects that made any sense. Eden worked extra hard at Astronomy early in fifth year because he knew Callie liked the subject, but he wasn’t otherwise invested in the subject and mostly just tried memorizing whatever was in the textbook. He fell just short of the O.
Charms ~ E
Spell work was one of the hardest things Eden had the misfortune of doing. He struggled with it through his first three years, producing either overly dramatic results or barely anything. However, increased confidence in his third and fourth years from doing well with healing spells paid dividends, not to mention Professor Shoichet’s patience and kindness and his hours of training in strategy and spellwork for Dueling Club.
DADA ~ E
There was something eerily fascinating about the Dark Arts and Eden always thought of DADA as a warning about things he might see out on a mission in the future. He did excellently on the written portion, but overthought and floundered on the practical at the boggart with a few frustrated, unsuccessful tries.
Herbology ~ A
Eden really wanted to like herbology. He thought it would be interesting to learn how the herbs that made up natural remedies, or the best for treating different injuries or diseases. Especially given his ex-girlfriends’ fascination with environments and excellence at herbology, Eden wanted to be better. Generally, if he knew what he was working with he could do okay. It was just...everything seemed to look the same. No matter how he memorized the herbs and studied though, or how much he tried to just...will his plants to do well, Eden seemed to cause more harm than good most of the time. Eden managed a respectable score on the written portion, but the moment it came to looking at actual plants, he floundered and confusion tanked his practical.
History ~ O
In his first few years, History was one of the few subjects Eden could understand and figure out. He hadn’t hated the subject in muggle schooling, and perhaps stuck to Wizard history simply because he knew how to study it. Inspired by a conversation with Rian McLellan, he started looking more into the wizarding wars and conflicts, studying how wizarding warfare happened-- this really captured his attention.
Potions ~ O
Potions theory had been amongst the most strange things Eden encountered, but at least it was understandable and tangible in a way spell theory was not. Moreover, measuring and mashing herbs and mixing them did not require magic--just consistent, honable, technique and attentiveness. Here the herb facts he’d strenuously crammed into his head actually came into use and every plant he wished he could just tableflip was already dead and carefully labeled--he just needed to know how to use them. Potions, at least, Eden knew he could do.
Transfiguration ~ O
Somewhere between potions and charms theory in how much it made sense to him, transfiguration was at least tangible. He had some idea of complex animagus-level transfiguration from Weslyn’s interests, and an actually friendly rivalry with Penelope in early fifth year not only helped him by giving him motivation to study, but also having someone to bounce ideas off and work with.
ELECTIVES Arithmancy ~ E
Arithmancy was simple, straightforward, with clear protocols that appealed very well to Eden’s obsession with order. He couldn’t always make sense of the interpretations, but did memorize the numerology associations and made a point to look for them everywhere. He had a few ideas for using arithmancy in potions work, but never acted on these experiments and his knowledge remained firmly limited to content covered in class.
Cursebreaking~E
Eden enjoyed the puzzle-solving and analytical side of cursebreaking and always sought to come up with elegant solutions that got the job done in the fewest steps with the least collateral damage. His spellwork sometimes wavered in power, but as his spellcasting got better, so too did his consistency.
Healing ~ O
His mum’s career as an army nurse and his general admiration of all army medics made magical medicine a definite class to take. In part thanks to the propensity of his wand for healing magic, Eden never had trouble with healing spellwork, which bolstered his confidence in the class and encouraged him to work even more. This created a positive self-perpetuating cycle that usually secured him a top grade in Healing.
Muggle Studies ~ O
Eden self-studied for the Muggle Studies exam mostly as a formality. His girlfriend had wanted to take the exam for whatever reason, and as a muggle-born wizard, Eden figured it wouldn’t be too hard to study with her. It was a good conversation starter anyways. He signed up for the exam mostly because he could and breezed by with minimal glancing over the contents of the course.
Law ~ E
As a muggleborn wizard with no background in the wizarding world prior to Hogwarts, Eden took Wizard Law almost as a way to better understand the wizarding world. He did well enough memorizing facts and policies for the exam—not enough for a top score, but exactly enough for a solid E.
Wandless ~ A
Eden took Wandless magic knowing that it was indispensable in a combat situation and that he might have to rely on it if he was to join the muggle military post-graduation. While he certainly had willpower, Eden lacked a certain calm and peace of mind necessary for wandless magic. For much of his first two years in the class the only successful wandless magic Eden could manage were near-uncontrolled bursts fueled by anger and sheer determination. Due to practices in Dueling he ironically did better on simple shield and knock back spells than everyday charms on the Wandless exam, and generally struggled to accomplish the tasks set.

NEWTs
Astronomy~ O
Eden continued Astronomy mostly out of silent rebellion to his parents and curiosity towards his girlfriend, Calliope, loving Astronomy. Weekly visits to the Planetariwm Wales over the breaks certainly helped, and Eden was certainly committed to enjoying what Callie did. For the NEWT he actually started understanding things instead of just memorizing.
Charms ~ O
Insights about his spellcasting from Wandless Magic carried over and helped Eden in Charms as well. He was generally familiar with what Charms could do, how to do them, and sometimes had creative uses of simple charms to do more complex tasks. He missed a single question on advanced charms theory, but still managed to get the O.
DADA ~ O
Years of Dueling and hours of practice finally paid off, but what really secured Eden a top grade on the DADA NEWT was a very thorough understanding of Dark Creatures and the kinds of spells associated with the Dark Arts. For each situation on the exam he had a simple and straightforward answer, tailored to the specific weaknesses of the dark creature in question. His practical exam was cast calmly and excellently.
Herbology ~ E
Eden had been surprised to be allowed to continue on with Herbology and took to NEWT Herbology studies with renewed vigor. He focused on healing and restorative herbs, and found a calm mind did wonders when actually caring for the plants. He was extraordinarily careful in his Herbology studies and while he was never the top student, with his practical actually excelling instead of tanking his grade, he managed to exceed expectations at the NEWT level.
History ~ O
The content of the History NEWTs aligned very well with Eden’s interest into wizarding conflicts and wars, and he eagerly soaked up anything Professor Powell had to teach on the subject and more.
Potions ~ O
Eden continued with potions because he’d done well at the OWL level, and because of its usefulness in healing. He imagined Potions as being prepared and liked keeping a few commonly useful potions--a wiggenweld, common antidote, calming drought on his person just to feel prepared. He didn’t particularly love potions, but more than recognized its value, focused on practical potions and continuing to hone techniques, and preformed outstandingly.
Transfiguration ~ E
By sixth year Eden had figured out how useful transfiguration could be on expeditions: with a bit of clever study and practice, he could transfigure the things around him into whatever he needed. This greatly appealed to him and he did his best continuing forward. He struggled with self-transfiguration on the practical, but his otherwise performed excellently.
ELECTIVES Arithmancy ~ E
By NEWTs, years of finding and analyzing number patterns in everyday instances had been ingrained in Eden. He found divination by arithmancy as fascinating as it was useful, but still sometimes struggled to make sense of the predictions he came up with. He always wished he had more time to really delve into Arithmancy, but until the day that he actually did that, his Arithmancy was a solid E.
Cursebreaking~E
Eden treated cursebreaking as a practical application of all his spellwork and magic learning-- he focused particularly on how he might encounter these in the wild or how to break past enemy defenses. While he sometimes had elegantly simply solutions with minimal collateral damage, he would resort to just brute-force destroying wards if pressed for time or frustrated.
Healing ~ O
As the only spellcasting subject Eden had never had issue with, Healing was undoubtedly one of the things Eden focused on at the NEWT level. He understood how animal bodies worked better than he did plant bodies, and found healing theory at least useful if not fascinating. Studying muggle biology and medicines over the summer added insights that further bolstered his understanding of magical healing.
Muggle Studies ~ O
As not only a muggleborn wizard who went home to muggle parents and grandparents over the breaks, but also as a teenager very enamored with muggle weaponry, Eden kept close ties with the muggle world. His brief glances through study guides and lived experience was enough to just make the cut for an O.
Law ~ E
Eden continued with Law only because he saw how useful it could be in a ministry or military career. He studied hard to be able to communicate his points and presented his cases clearly, succinctly, and rationally, but missed on details that weren’t directly covered in class.
Wandless ~ O
Despite his frustrations and misgivings with Wandless magic, Eden signed up for the NEWT level class, doggedly insistent he be able to cast magic without the crutch of a wand. Sixth year, Professor Lovette successfully identified and diagnosed the problem as not being any kind of lack of ability, but stemming from a tumultuous mental state--loneliness, fear, and shame. With some work, they were able to pair his learnings from the Namaste club to Wandless practice, and slowly achieve the correct mental state. Finally, in seventh year, 4 years of frustrated extra practices bore fruit as wandless magic went from his worst subject to one of his best skills.
------------------------ Eden spent the first four years of Hogwarts basically buried in studying. Insights into his mental health have also bolstered his spellcasting, which was a major hinderance previously.

Weekdays
Wakes up close to 6:00 and tidies up, does some morning yoga. Makes breakfast for his family. Heads to the Ministry via apparition Ministry at 7:45 promptly and usually chats with other people/ previews his work that day before 8. Does a lot of his studying on protocols and dueling strategies in the morning. Takes lunch at 11:30 and is usually back by 12:15. Usually just grabs something to eat locally or brings a sack lunch and reads/ watches Training in the afternoon-- dueling, conditioning. Works on active cases with others. Leaves at 5:00. Usually pretty prompt about it, although he'll sometimes hang around for a last duel or something.
Cooks dinner if he's not eating with a colleague. Takes Corporal Feathers out for a walk. Unwinds in the evening with movies or just hanging out.
Weekends: Saturday and Sunday.
Wakes up around 6:30 and does some yoga before making breakfast like usual. Goes shooting with his dad or hangs out with family and friends. Meets Callie at Hogsmeade for lunch and usually goes on a date or something. Tries to drag Mattie out sometimes and go shopping or play music or something.
