R* [G] Make it Quick (Torsten)

Torsten walked in a thoughtful silence. Thoughtful was perhaps not the right word. He walked in silence, though few thoughts crossed his mind other than the impending change in his life. He was ready for it, this he knew, and whatever gift the Grandfather chose to bestow upon him would only help his prowess in battle. If anything, that silence he had wrapped around himself was an attempt to quell the excitement welling up inside him. It wouldn't do to break down into a dance or a fit of emotion - he wasn't Freydis, and it wasn't his style.

He let her prance ahead, too preoccupied by his own journey to really compete or care, and when she asked if he was excited, he answered with only a brusque nod. Fitful creature. Freydis was lucky she could fight, and Torsten never wanted to test his skill against hers. A loss - against anyone - would be embarrassing.

Torsten followed Freydis to the base of the tree. He didn't embrace the Grandfather with such a show of warmth, but he bowed his head respectful and and sent a quiet greeting in his thoughts, doing his best not to roll his eyes. Freydis would compete until she couldn't. She could have the honor of going first. "Make it quick," he said curtly as she smiled and shot him a look.

If nothing else, it gave him some time to consider what to say. He stepped a little closer.

"I too have come for a vision, Grandfather," he said, his voice low, almost as if he didn't want to be overheard.

Though no breeze passes through, Grandfather Tree's leaves rustle as Torsten approaches.

He was in Blackbriar Bog. Torsten lifted his head to scan his surroundings first, moving as little as he could. His instincts told him to stay still, stay quiet, and assess the situation first. As moments ticked by, he concluded that it was safe, and he left his initial spot with thoughts of the bog layout in his head. The spot he was in was not well-sheltered, but neither was it a trap. He'd spotted openings in the trees should he need to make a quick exit, and he kept them in mind in chase he needed a way out.

Now... it was time to explore. The bog was notorious for not housing much of interest when it came to fighting, and Torsten grumbled to himself as he walked through it, unable to do much in the way of healing. Still, he wanted to do a sweep, just in case there was something he could tackle.

It took him a few minutes to find anything of note, and when he did it was... in the water. It was hard to see what it was, but it did glint, and the first thought that crossed his mind was that it could be treasure. Torsten did enjoy finding treasure, and though he knew that the water here was not particularly... safe, he went for it anyway, unfazed by the knowledge that fishing it out of that disgusting swamp would likely take more than a little effort. He didn't mind.

The buck sloshed into the water and gripped the thing in his teeth. It had, conveniently, a handle, which allowed him to haul it bodily out of the water after several full-body tugs. With a powerful swing of his neck, he flung the box back onto land, and then stopped to check out the predicament he'd landed himself in.

He was a little stuck. He considered it "a little" because he could still move. His legs had simply been sucked deep into the gooey mess that lined the swamp bed. Torsten sighed. Had he known this would happen? Absolutely. Was he ready for the exertion that would probably come with yanking himself back out? Certainly. Torsten never complained about a little work. With a grunt, he heaved and managed to pull one leg out of the mire. This leg, he reached and settled with a squelch back into the mud, this time closer to shore. Then he repeated the process, throwing his weight behind pulling each leg out, only to make it a little closer to shore.

By the time he made it, he was panting and tired. He sloshed out of the swamp and shook himself dry before making his way to the shiny box. Treasure? The thing was unlocked and flipped open easily, only to reveal that it was empty inside. With a growl, Torsten lifted it and chucked it back into the water. It sank like a stone, and he watched it with dispassionate eyes, until it had disappeared from view. Then he turned away and continued to make his way through the bog, already on the hunt for his next venture. If his struggle with the water had exhausted him, he didn't show. No matter. He'd be ready for the next thing.

Grandfather tree's leaves settle and an olive light swirls around Torsten, refreshing and singing with the hum of a thousand insect wings.

Torsten has been bestowed with the Arthropod gift.
