Well here she was petitioning to join the Selkies pack. They seemed to have everything she was looking for in an ideal pack. She had had enough of lone wolfing and had no taste for wolf on wolf violence. Besides these guys lived in the Run on the coast no less and this was much better than the redwoods or the mountains, for one thing it was humid and the air didnt burn her nose with each breath, then there was the scent rolling off the sea. It was beautiful the see, it stole her breath away and she gasped.
"Its beautiful." She said in awe.
The alpha, Whim of the Sea had taken her out to the beach that was to be her trial ground. Well, the beach was a new setting but she was pretty confident in her ability to survive out there without water or food. She hadn't ever been in a pack and as such have never had the help of more than one wolf in her life. What secrets did this beach hold? She was more excited about exploring than passing, surviving was surviving she would continue to do so.

Light Rain spent her first day scouting the sand and area, keeping a wary eye on the water, she made note of dents in the sand, crabs scuttling along the side with their strange sideways walk.
Seagulls called with their haunting cry and in her joy she couldn't resist a good howl alerting any other wolves that she was there, but she didn't care, she was at the ocean and it was beautiful!

Now then water was all the way back up the hill, but if there was a catchment for rain in a depression in a rock anywhere she might get lucky, just to make sure it was not run off from the ocean, ew salt.

Wandering back towards the cliff she finds one such rock with a small amount of fresh water, enough for a day at least no more, but it would do while she dealt with learning the beach properly.

She lapped the fresh water then practiced pouncing on crabs.

Day 1: Light Rain Catches a crab! Water: a handy limited resource rock that catches rain.

The night before, Light Rain had grudglingly slept outside in a very uncomfortable rocky place up Pointy Rock Ridge as she called it. This would not do, she would go all the way back for some decent water, a thought struck her, something she used to do for her mother when her mother was feeling ill.

Light Rain hunted around for moss, finding some she stuffed her maw with it for the long and boring trip up to the proper fresh water source, once there she drank her fill and soaked the moss in the water. Then she returned with the sopping wet mess in her mouth but this would mean less concern of dying of thirst when you can take water with you.

Next she scrounged along the water line, picking at the scraps the ocean had left, a few smallish things but nothing to really fill her up. The crabs waved their claws at her but they had been hard to get into.

Instead she waited for the dimples in the sand to appear, a few of them squirted once in a while and unoccupied sand didn't do that.

She dug really fast into a dimple.

She stuck her nose in and snorted.

_____

She got a long squirt in the face for her trouble. Sadly she would go hungry today.

That evening she spent quite a bit of time in the cool digging a proper shelter under a rock on Sharp Rock Ridge, now at least she had a cover from rain.

Water was covered because of the moss.

Day 2: Den is dug out, but no food. Water is okay but not plentiful.

The next day it stormed hard and blowing in the morning, it was quite miserable outside but she had chosen her rocky promontory home well, even if it did hurt her paws to get up here, they would harden up eventually. She did pry a few of the worst rocks out though it took some doing. Luckily the storm had filled up her makeshift water bowl and she lapped water fresh from the sky.

This reinvigorated her and she marched off after the crabs and the dimples in the sand like she meant business, before she got there however movement in the tidepools caught her attention.

She wandered closer. A fish was caught there in a small space near to a bigger pool but cut off by a rock and coral ledge.

She rushed toward it and nose dived in.

The fish used to much more aquatic predators, leaped out of the water and as fate would have it plopped into the bigger pool where she had no hope of catching it.

Her stomach grumbled.

Day 3: Still hungry, storm provided easy water.

Her hunger was getting serious the 4th morning so she chewed at swallowed some green kelp. Tasted awful, would probably hork it up later but well it filled the aching gap between her ribs.

The coast had bounty sure but need it all be so darn hard to catch?

Today when she looked in the tidepools there was a strange but juicy looking tentacled creature that she had half a mind to try to eat and the other just to play with it and check it out.

Was it even edible?

As it turned out, she wasn't going to find that out because the moment she tried to pounce the weird thing it squished itself between two immovable rocks.

She moaned her displeasure but the creature was not curious about the noise and stayed in its hole.

She ate snails for supper, they were not satisfying but she had to eat something or she would loose her strength.

Day 4, hunting has failed again, scavenged icky snails from the beach to stay alive, water will be gone by tomorrow.

Day five and she was starving, luckily a large fish had washed ashore in the evening after all day full of unsuccessful crab chasing. Was she actually getting worse at hunting? She did her moss routine and howled for joy when the big ol fish washed up on the beach, she wouldn't die! Yay!

Well, hunting was not going well for her but she was still here, and there was enough of the giant fish left for her to drag up the cliff with her to feast on tomorrow. No wonder this pack had a trial if this was the environment they were used to.

Still it was the most beautiful place she had ever seen. That made up for the rugged hardship. She was okay, it was possible to live here, the sea brought gifts almost every day.

She had collected some shells and had almost got caught by the tide. She had relaxed too much gathering fun shells and bits of rock, and the tide had snuck up on her, she had just barely made it to the rock shelf before she would have been cut off by the water.

Woo, this place had its dangers.
Day 5 Dead fish! No hunting success when chasing crabs.

Day 6 was the day she actually had leftovers because of the fish, she was excited and her belly full. She spent all day hunting and making a trip to get water. But besides some berries up the trail that she knew to be edible there was not any other success on finding food. Thank goodness for the ocean and its fishy bounty.

She thought, how many days had she been out here? Was it really six? So one left and she would find out weather or not she would be accepted into this pack. She was nervous but she couldn't think of a reason she would fail, except maybe if she applied for a hunter, maybe the redwoods were just easier to hunt in go figure but she was having a rough time on that front.

Best if she were a gatherer anyway, there at least she had decent talent.

Tomorrow would be the last day here, she would like to visit this place again one day even after the trial was over. At least she was doing something here.

Day 6 no hunting success water and food okay

It was the final day and her heart was both overjoyed and sad to leave after this. She had made it though! She had survived. She went to fetch the last water she would need, she would not miss this long arduous trip nope, not one bit. But living here for seven days had been more than worth it.

She hoped that her behaviour had been what Whim wanted, who knew? Maybe she would later if she was accepted. Oh to have a home. She did a small frolic on the sand, she felt content and complete in a way. She had chosen the pack she wanted and she was doing her best to prove to them that she was worthy of them and they of her.

Even just eating food with others again would be fun for her. She had been alone a long time and she was tired of it.

She hunted crabs and the squirting things but no long came to her even on the seventh day.

Day 7: no hunting success, hungry perhaps but alive.
