The Barrens, it was a place of her youth until she was taken in by a kind Botanic doe. She had looked so sad back then, her ma, Russet Fawn. Now the Botanic was up to her ears in plants and always growing more. This left Juniper to wander and explore she was an adult now. Her trip to the tree had been a whole different experience then when she had gone with Fawn. She had just watched the doe fall into a trance as she went through her quest... Or so that is what she was told. Fawn;s had gifted her with a marking and Juniper wanted one just like it that was of her own. Rooting around in the dust of the barrens. The last place she had seen her Uncle Miros many moons ago. Juniper nosed through the sand as she seemed to hunt for something, not entirely sure just what but something. Straightening herself up, the mahogany doe shook her head and sneezed sand from her nose. That had been a fool hearty thing. Ears flicking slightly she looked up as a dark purple and red familiar fluttered her way and landed on her back. "Find anything Wisp?" she asked as the familiar just shook its head before vanishing into her mane. Frowning slightly, Juniper glanced around at the endless desert like landscape. Was there no one else out here? Perhaps she should have remained in Homewood, it was more lively after all..

Calelha looked up at the sky. The sun was bright and starting to get hot. She had started her journey early but it seemed the Barrens had no concept of time and was going to be hot fast today. With sigh Calelha new is was going to be a long day especially since Dakotah decided to tag along. As if her heard her thought the grumpy scuttle grumbled for his place on her back. "I do not see why we have to be out here." "All of Vykeli has to be healed and I have not been here since my quest." She explained to the grouch with an eye roll. "Aren't there are other nouls to do that work." He grumbled and though it was a question Calelha was pretty sure he was not asking. "Yes but we all have to do our part." He grumble some more but it was to low for Calelha to hear so she turned her attention back the Barrens. Not to far off Calelha saw a mahogany doe. Just as she was about to say hello the doe sneezed. "Bless you." She called with a smile to the doe instead of introducing her else first. wc:201

Bipin had been on his way back to Homewood after visiting Grandfather tree. He had thought he would be like his father and end up with botanic as a gift. However, Grandfather had bestowed the gift of fungal on him and it left him pondering. He knew about the different gifts but hadn’t given them much thought. This was very short sighted of him, but Bipin would remedy that and learn about it. His first ability was enrich, his beloved saplings would love that ability for sure. Something green on a rock moved and caught his attention. He blinked and looked over at it. Oh, it was Jade, his green scuttle scale. “Decided to come and meet me, Jade?” he inquired in a deep smooth voice. The green scuttle blinked up at him and then slid off the rock and walked over to him. “Yes, I figured you’d been too deep in thought to pay much attention to your surroundings.” Her matter of fact comment rang true and didn’t surprise Bipin in the least. He kneeled down so that Jade could climb up to his back. Rising to his feet, he continued on his journey back to Homewood. From a short distance, he noticed a couple nouls out and about in the barrens. WC: 213

Today was a day that Mielikki decided to collect soil samples in the barrens. Recently a section was successfully healed but that didn’t mean it was time for a break. As a fungal gifted noul, Mielikki had the ability to add much needed nutrients back into the soil, among other abilities. She has a pretty good natural ability to figure out what was missing by using her sense of taste. With help from Lapis, she got her harness on with attached baskets with empty clay vials for samples. Lapis sat in one of the baskets as they made their way out of the bog and into the barrens. “I wonder if there are any surviving spores in this soil,” Lapis said off handedly. She had a rather deadpan expression on her face which seemed to be her usual expression. “That would be a lovely find. Fungi don’t have seeds that are visible. They have spores which are not seeable to the naked eye. I’d have to nurture the soil samples for signs of life.” Despite being raised by a botanic noul and thinking that was the gift she would get as well, Mielikki dove right in to her gift of fungal. She continued to grow and nurture plants with her gift but also explored the vast varieties of mushrooms and other fungi. She pondered the possibilities as she traveled along her usual path. She was very much an introvert who wasn’t a big fan of socializing, although she was getting better at it. So Mielikki wasn’t expecting to run into another noul, let alone four. WC: 265

When was the last time she had ventured out into the Barrens? Keevah was a little embarrassed about how hard she had to ponder that question. It had been a while, but when she last found herself out in the searing heat of the desert, it was when she was returning from her Grandfather Tree quest. She had been a freshly made fungal user then, even took a little detour to try out an ability. It had been just to see, so she could start to get an understanding. Her gift had still been so new, to her certainly, but to everyone. The doe didn't actively keep track of these sorts of things, but one couldn't help but keep an ear out for word of those returning from their own calls to Grandfather Tree. There were newer gifts of course, but there was some degree of, she didn't know exactly, camaraderie maybe, that kept her ears tuned for word of those also graced with her gift. She had a couple of abilities, but there were certainly others she didn't possess. She'd learn. She'd come to understand. Of course, she'd have to see how things were done and did a bit of digging around on her own to expand her horizons. The glare of the sun on sand and baked, cracked earth drew her from her musings as she walked away from Homewood. The doe blinked and shook her head. Oof! It was so bright and so hot out here! When she ventured out for her visit to the Grandfather Tree night had just fallen. It hadn't been too bad. Keeping her head bowed to try to shield her eyes a little, Keevah pressed on. 'Wait...Was that a sneeze? Were those voices?' Once her vision adjusted, she slowed her pace, lifting her head to look around, ears pricking forward in mild surprise. There were four other nouls out and about in the area. Even one of whom she recognized! Calelha, from the festival! A welcome surprise. Then another thought occurred to her as she drank in the scene around her. Each and every one had a familiar with them. "I feel like I should have brought a chaperone, or dragged a friend out here with me," She mildly joked to no one in particular before calling out to the one familiar face in the small crowd. "It's good to see you again, Calelha. How've you been? What brings you to the Barrens today?" She flicked an ear and glanced around. The stripped buck appeared to be heading toward Homewood. She wasn't certain what the bearded doe was doing, and the mahogany doe had been apparently doing something that caused her to sneeze. Might as well throw the question out to everyone. Make a forum of it. Sihaya would be proud. Look at her, attempting at being social. "Good day to you, everyone. Ahm, my name is Keevah. I hope you're well. If I may ask, what brings everyone out to the barrens today?" No pressure. Everyone was addressed without leaving any one noul out, but not demanding...right? [WC: 516]

Shaking he head again to really clear the sand from her nose, Juniper looked around as she heard someone speak. Turning around she glanced at another doe that had also come to the barrens. This one sported a strange hat? Could one call it that? She wasn't too sure what the fashions were these days. She hadn't really been too interested when she was a foal. "Oh, thank you. " she said with a grin. Then there were more that appeared from what seemed like all corners of the barrens. Two more does and a buck. Tilting her head a little Juniper watched them all. She wondered why they were all here. She herself were looking for a means to practice her abilities. Well the one that she had been given from the tree. Were these others all the same as she was? "Nice to meet you Keevah, I am out here to try and practice being a Fungal user." Juniper said quite cheerfully. "My name's Juniper. I just don't know what it really means to be a Fungal."WC: 178

Calelha nodded to the doe that had sneezed. "You are very welcome. My name is Lady Calelha but most just call me Calelha." She introduced herself to the doe before her. Calelha grinned at the doe she had met at the flower festival has she approached the two of them, Calelha was super happy to see her. "Hello Keevah. It is so nice to see you. What brings you the Barrens?" She asked find it funny and interesting that they would run into each other in the Barrens of all places. Before any of them could really get talking, Calelha noticed that an ascended fungal doe with a bud and a blue dun buck had appears in the barrens as well. "Hello to you both." Calelha said them both. "Great Trees blessings to you. What brings you two here like the rest of us?" She was awkwardly trying to make small talk but this was clearly not her strong suit. wc:160

It was thoroughly surprising to run into not just two but four other nouls in the barrens. The place was huge and rather uncomfortable of a place to just hang out in without purpose. Bipin was sure everyone here was here with purpose and as he heard the others, that seemed to be the case. Even more astounding was it seemed at least two- no three, were fungal users. A doe announced as much, one has a mushroom on her head and the third, while she had a beard of sorts had the purple mark of an adept fungal noulicorn. His head swung towards the roaned doe, what were the odds? Bipin moved closer to the ladies and bowed his head in polite acknowledgement. “Greetings! I am Bipin, son of Dryxel and Tempest. I’m fresh from the Grandfather Tree as a fungal gifted noul.” It was a most formal greeting but it was best to get some details out of the way. By the time Mielikki had come upon the group of four, her and Lapis had collected several soil samples. They clinked quietly in their designated basket as she walked. Mielikki never moved as if she was in a hurry, some may consider her slow, rarely did she pick up the pace. A trait that may prove a problem later down the road, just not today. She paused just outside the group, in time to hear the one buck formally introduce himself as a newly gifted fungal noul. One of the does had mentioned being a fungal noul and another sported a bud, just like Mielikki. It seemed odd that they all, minus the buck, would just happen to be here and have the same gift. While there was some work they could out here, the barrens wasn’t a friendly place and fungus liked moist environments. None of the nouls present here were nouls Mielikki knew. Two looked vaguely familiar, probably from the festival. The buck said he was a son of Dryxel, that rang a bell... the ruins perhaps? Looked like his father then. “I’m Mielikki. Just here collecting soil samples.”wc; 353 / 831

Huh! With each new introduction, the revelation that each of those introduced in turn were also fungal gift bearers. The odds of such a gathering were astounding! Keevah nodded to each noul as introductions were given. "Well met, Calehla, Juniper, Bipin, Mielikki. Pleased to meet you all. And congratulations on your new gift, Bipin." Since everyone was sharing already, it was only fair that she did so to inform everyone else. "I'm also a fungal user. I came across word of some desert fungi or, or lichen and thought that I might come out here and see if I could replicate it myself. Or try to do so." It might take a few goes. The barrens were a vicious climate and tenuous newly introduced spores would be hard pressed to survive. Eh, it was part of the truth. "I was also wanting to get out of Homewood for a bit, so thought why not see where my hooves took me" Just for a little bit. She also was wanting to stretch her legs, clear her mind, and breathe.
