She was quite sure that her adventuring career was well and truly behind her. Especially now. She'd felt queasy for days and days following the Flower Festival. It had been such a strange day. The celebrating, the rat, the cider ... She'd been so much more forward than usual. That morning, a healer had confirmed it to her - she was expecting. It had been a bit of a shock, but the more Moon Mist thought about it, the more pleased she was. She'd always imaged herself raising foals. For a long time she'd thought she might even end up a nanny. Grandfather Tree had given her a gift that mean she was of most use in Homewood, so rearing little ones wouldn't be much of a problem. Of course, she'd pictured herself in somewhat different circumstances, but sometimes you didn't get to choose these things. Over all, she was feeling quite positive. Perhaps that would change when she had to haul around a large belly, but perhaps not.

But now that she was going to be a mother, is was important that she make Homewood an even better place for the life she brought into the world. And that meant helping with the expansion. While she might not be able to help much with watering, she did know how to grow a good plant, and she was blessed with the gift of garden sense. She could ensure that once her plants had been transplanted into fresh tilled earth at the meeting of Barrens and Homewood they were happy and would survive. She inspected her little seedlings once more. They really did seem ready. She smiled. She'd managed to nurture these little plants, she hoped she'd be able to do the same with her foal. Hoping her companion for the day would arrive soon, she carefully began digging out one of the plants. She scraped ever so carefully with her hoof, making she sure wasn't damaging any of the tender little roots. It wouldn't do to kill the plant before she even had it out of the ground. Once the roots here fully exposed her carefully leveraged the small leafy plant up, and then gently seized it in her teeth. Just as she had it, she heard someone entering her grove.

Fulsome was running late. Again. He'd spent the morning pouring over the most interesting book he'd found. He was sure he was so close to figuring out what those squiggles were! It was only a matter a time. Once he'd mastered reading the symbols, he knew a whole new world of knowledge would open up! The others may have destroyed Vykeli, but they clearly knew so much! Fulsome was sure their knowledge could help save it too ... Still, he worried what others thought. Would Moon Mist chastise him for being late? Would she be angry if she knew he'd been occupied with some artifact from the others? It made his stomach churn a little. Still, he was nearly at her glade, and he was quite sure he wasn't hours late. The sun hadn't quite reached its peak in the sky, so he hadn't left her for too long.

He'd known Moon Mist since they were both foals. They'd been in the same nanny group. Their quite temperaments had meant they'd sort of drifted together some of the time. He hadn't been in the group as much as she had, but he still had pleasant memories of the quite little doe. It had been some time since he'd seen her though. He hadn't even been to Grandfather Tree when he'd last seen her! And her certainly hadn't been an expander then either! He looked forward to catching up with her while they worked. It was quite serendipitous, really. She'd inquired with a much more senior expander if someone help with a little project she was working on. Important expanders usually didn't take on tiny personal projects, but an apprentice like Fulsome was just right for this sort of job. He'd been a little surprised when her name had come up, but then immediately less surprised when he heard she was now a gardener. That just seemed to fit her like a glove. At least the Moon Mist he remembered.

Mostly lost in though, he realized he was now standing in her grove! Or what he assumed was her grove. At least this was where he'd been told to go. "Moon Mist?" He smiled. That was certainly her. She had a plant in her mouth, her front feet dirty, but her distinctive markings couldn't be hidden. "Moon Mist! I'm so glad to see you!" Fulsome trotted forward, and carefully took the plant from her mouth, so she could return the greeting.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Moon Mist's eyes widened. This wasn't just some apprentice expander. It was Fulsome! What a pleasant surprise! She often struggled around strangers, but this was no stranger! They'd been foals together! She chuckled as he greeted her, and relieved her of her burden. "Fulsome! I had no idea! This is lovely!"

She stepped back, to take him in. When they'd last been together they'd both been gangly adolescents, talking about how they imagined their pilgrimages to Grandfather Tree going. What their place in the world would be. She had to admit, she was a little surprised he was an expander. He had always been so curious about the others ... But perhaps this was how he was helping to heal Vykeli. Regardless of why, it was nice to see him. It grounded her a little.

"I hope we can catch up a little while we work!" She swished her tail. "But we'd better get walking. We want to get this plant in the ground before the sun rises too high." She'd been told an aqua was coming to help that. That had to mean Fulsome was among the first. What an interesting path his life had taken. She chattered at her friend, occasionally taking the plant back so he could speak. They passed the walk catching up on what their early adulthoods had been like. In truth, both were just barely considered grown. It hadn't been all that long ago they'd gone Grandfather Tree, after all.

"I even went out with that party to help rescue Wanderlust!" She watched Fulsome's eyes widen, and she laughed. "Yes, I know. Totally unlike me. But I'm quite sure I'm done with the adventuring life now. For many reasons." She glanced towards her belly. Should she tell him? Why not. She was glad, after all. And not saying it didn't make it not true. "I'm going to be a mother. So certainly no more dangerous adventures for me." She didn't look at him as she said it. They'd reached the Barrens, exactly where she wanted to transplant her hard work. "I think here looks like a good spot." She began scraping at the dry soil, making a neat little hole.

As they walked towards the Barrens their conversation was pleasant. It was nice to catch up. Moon Mist didn't mention anything about his interest in the others, which he appreciated. And she seemed quite pleased to see him. They fell back into their old rhythm together with ease. Fulsome began to wonder why he hadn't sought her out sooner. He felt a little guilty he'd let this friendship fall to the wayside. He really did like Moon Mist.

"I think you went to Grandfather Tree before I did. I had a ... uh ... few false starts. I had to make sure I was ready for any outcome. Eventually I was. And aqua! But I guess you probably knew that already. It's interesting, being on of the first. Discovering this new gift. It's so useful Moon Mist. I think the implications are so great. I have so much left to learn, but already!" He smiled at her, trying not to run his mouth.

She really had grown up to be quite stunning. She'd always stood out, at least to Fulsome, but now as an adult? He was quite sure he'd never seen a Noul quite like her. He regarded her carefully. He didn't want her to think he was staring at her. And then she dropped a bombshell. Pregnant! He nearly dropped the plant she'd grown. She was so young though! Both still green apprentices. Barely apprentices! He tried to swallow his shock. She was already digging the hole for the plant. He felt something funny in his chest. Moon Mist. Already, she'd found a mate? He supposed he wasn't surprised. She was very pretty. Probably some gardener had swooped in ... Or maybe someone from her grand adventure.

Hole completed, he gently placed the plant in. Now there was no reason not to speak. "Well, congratulations. I'm sure you and your mate are very pleased." He glanced at her again. She couldn't be very far along. He was also surprised that her mate had allowed her to come out to the Barrens like this. Well, he'd have to keep a close eye on her, and move quickly. No sense taking risks. "I'll be as fast as possible, so you can get back home quickly."

Fulsome clamped his eyes shut, and fumbled around for his magic. His heart was fluttering, making it hard. He took a few deep breaths, tried to calm himself. Eventually he found it, and the magic flowed through him. He used his teeth to tip over a waterskin he'd brought, a stream of clear water flowing out. He used his magic to direct it just so, into the ground to form a little pool just beneath the plants roots. It should be just enough to get the plant going.

Plant planted, and news told, Moon Mist watched Fulsome use his magic. He seemed a little flustered. Had her news done that? He'd certainly jumped to some conclusions. As he deftly irrigated her plant, she closed her own eyes, and gathered her magic. She needed to check that the plant was happy. No sense in just leaving it to die, after all this work. She touched the plant, and suddenly could feel what it could feel. It was a little shaken up from its uprooting and subsequent trip, but nothing it wouldn't recover from. Tiny pool Fulsome had made below the ground would feed it for some time. The work was good. She opened her eyes.

"Oh, it's not quite like that Fulsome. I don't have anyone special. I'll be raising them on my own. I think it's nice though. I'll give them a nice life in Homewood. Like we had, when we were little." She smiled. "Until they come, I'll keep gardening. Well, and after they come too. I don't think there's a nicer place for a foal than a garden really." She looked at her new little seedling. A tiny thing, but it was one additional bit of Barren claimed for Homewood. She looked back at her companion. He had a strange look on his face. She didn't know quite what to make of it. "But you're right, it's time to head home now. Using magic always takes a lot out of me. ... I probably need more practice."
