(backdated to when the Veil was open in December 2k19)

Southern Shadow hadn't been this far north in a while outside of visiting the other packs of the alliance. She...didn't mind them, insofar as everyone else seemed to be fine getting along with murderers, poisoners, mercenaries, and the like, but she had never felt particularly part of them. There were days even when she felt her connection with The Sand Raiders a bit tenuously, though she also knew it was her low grade paranoia hard at work trying to destroy any semblance of stability she had stumbled across. There wasn't any reason to believe Night Fell wanted her or her sister out, after all; Ominous Wind was a fantastic Whisper, though nobody was supposed to know that, and Southern Shadow herself thought she was making for a damn good Sidewinder, thanks for asking.

Still, it lingered at the back of her mind. A barely perceptible what if?

She was up beyond the river not on visitation business for once, though. A pretty bird had told the pack that something shifty had been going on up north, though it didn't make much sense to her. What in Kells were they smoking if they thought holes were being torn in the very air? Southern Shadow figured that was the bigger piece of information to know so she could bring some back and share with the pack: have a fun little gathering of getting high in the desert night. Stranger still were the rumors that a new breed of wolf had come crawling out of these magic holes...which was her job to check out today. Joy of joys.

She kept alert, but her eyes were already half-lidded with skepticism. She practiced what her report for be when she inevitably came back empty-pawed. "Yeah, sorry, chief, looks like someone found a really good breed of peyote. wouldn't mind some myself, gods damn my paws hurt..."

Starling yawned and stretched his front paws out ahead of his body as far as he could reach, butt in the air as he leaned back, then forward to extend his back paws behind him. As he rose to standing he shook, fur waving through the air as his body twisted. His tongue lolled out of the side of his mouth as he contemplated the day. Although normally content to let each day come as it would, today Starling was restless and wanted to search for adventure - or at least something different from the normal routine. He had no idea where to begin looking though, and after deciding that no direction was really much better than another, he let his paws begin carrying him wherever felt right.

He soon found himself descending from the lakeside mountains he'd made his home in and crossing flatlands only to climb into another mountain range. Starling thought as he walked, wondering if he'd ever purposely been over here. He was pretty sure he'd arrived at what everyone called the Thorn Circle. Starling had a faint memory of hearing some sort of rumor about this place, that some strange occurrence happened around mystical times of the year, but he'd never really understood quite what others were saying. Something about a veil or another land? But that didn't make much sense so he'd never thought much about it. Although Starling had *consciously* forgotten this tidbit until just know, he realized his subconscious must have decided this was the place to go for adventure given that winter solstice was near.

Something in his body or in the air drew him toward the center of the ring of mountains, so he descended once more on the other side of the peaks and cautiously made his way around. His ears could pick up some kind of abnormality in the sounds he'd expect to hear, but what it was he couldn't tell. Was it something making noise, a strange air current, something else? He used his ears to guide him and slowly padded closer to the place the noise was coming from.
